Die springbok is 'n merkwaardige atleet wat ’n topspoed van tot 100 km per uur kan bereik. THE Kolomela mine is reported to havesupported the Diamond aerobics team bydonating water bottles and headgear to thevalue of R25 000.That is in support of the team’s initiative

of addressing the lack of recreationalactivities and access to relevant informa-tion, such as community sporting events, inthe Tsantsabane municipal area.The team was formed in 2011 to popular-

ise aerobics throughout the province. Theteam, consisting of fitness professionals,intends forming smaller clubs in variouscommunities.According to Cindy Ramnarayan of Anglo

American, their business unit, through itsSocial and Community Strategy, aims ataddressing the gaps in key focus areas ofhealth and social well-being in the commu-nity surrounding the mine.The initiative is targeted at allowing the

team to form a federation and become amember of the Sport Authority in theNorthern Cape Province.As part of implementing their vision of

popularising this sport throughout theprovince, the Diamond aerobics group heldan aerobics wellness programme on HumanRights day at the town hall in Postmasburg.Tshepisho Moalahi, administrator and

organiser of events for the DiamondAerobics Marathon is reported to havepointed out that there is currently noestablished aerobics federation in theprovince and aerobics has not found itsway in communities as yet.She further added that the purpose of this

aerobics marathon was to raise awarenessin the Tsantsabane area and possiblyestablish a club.An aerobics marathon is also being

planned in Postmasburg for later in theyear to create more awareness.George Benjamin, manager: public affairs

at the Kolomela Mine said: “We staydedicated in ensuring we make meaningfuldifferences within our communities andactively being involved in initiatives thatwill reduce social ills in the community inwhich we operate.”

ANOTHER small business in the North-ern Cape has become successful, reported-ly through the help of Kumba Iron Ore’sKolomela Small Business Centre.Entrepreneur and businessman Frans

Muller is the beneficiary who operates athriving transport business that has beengrowing steadily.Muller has come a long way since a

tragic accident in 2001 that left him in anintensive care unit for almost six monthswith the possibility of never walkingagain.According to Cindy Ramnarayan,

communications practitioner at AngloAmerican, Muller worked at Spoornet for25 years where he trained operators whileconducting ad hoc transport for anadditional income.She stated in a press release that

Muller’s business started from humblebeginnings with his own vehicle.“After the accident he was unable to

work. While recuperating, Muller decidedthat he wanted to do something different.It was then that he started transportingschool children between their school andtheir homes during the day. In theevenings he transported employees fromlocal businesses to their homes inPostmasburg.”“This part-time business gradually grew

into a full-time job around 2004-’05 and hisclientele and transport needs also escalat-ed, thanks to the support of his wife,Annah, who assisted him in securingclients.”Muller’s business expanded and he

started transporting people to surroundingtowns and assisted in grocery shoppingcollection and other errands.“Safety and time management were

very important to Muller and he knewthat he would have to acquire a biggervehicle to enable him to meet the growingdemands of his clients.”The growth potential of the business

was enough to persuade the KolomelaSmall Business Centre to facilitate

funding to help Muller meet the transporta-tion needs of his clients.“I knew it was going to happen one day,

but I have the patience of Job. All goodthings will come to those who wait,” saidMuller about the new vehicle he acquired.The Kolomela Small Business Centre in

Postmasburg assists local existing andestablished entrepreneurs financially throughthe Zimele Community Fund.“From 2008 to the end of 2014 its six funds

provided R1,4 billion in funding, supported1 885 companies and completed 2 765 loantransactions.“Funded businesses have employed 38 296

people and achieved a collective annualturnover of R6,1 billion,” stated Ramnarayan.The fund cap is R2 million, with a 6%

interest rate annually paid over 36 months,”George Benjamin, manager: public affairs at

the Kolomela Mine, was quoted as saying.According to Ramnarayan, Zimele’s

unique approach to enterprise develop-ment has made a real difference incommunities over the past two decades.The Kolomela Small Business Centre

has two types of loan funding, term loan(long term) and project loan (short term).“Entrepreneurs must follow certain

processes in order to qualify for thesebusiness loans.“The centre also offers other free

services like internet service for clients,business management training andbusiness mentoring.“Anglo American is committed to

making a real difference to transform thecommunities in which we operate,promoting our shared value mission,”Ramnarayan said.

“MY gemeente lê my baie na aan die hart.Ek is trots op hulle as ek sien hoe diekudde geestelik groei.”

Só sê past. Allan Bam, een van diepastore by die Volle Evangelie-kerk (VEK)in Kathu.

Bam is op ’n jong ouderdom deur dieHere tot die bediening geroep. “Ek wasjonk en wou nie luister nie. Ek wou netryk word!”

Maar op 30 jaar het hy uiteindelikingegee en sy lewe gewy aan die bedie-ning in die VEK.

Hy het nog nooit weer teruggekyk nie.“Ek is net spyt oor die tyd wat ek met

my afvalligheid gemors het. Ek sal altyddankbaar wees dat die Here my op dieregte pad gelei het. Dit krap my deesdaesommer om as mense doelbewus teen dieHere se wil gaan,” sê hy.

Dié energieke pastoor het ’n paar draaiein die lewe gestap voor sy loopbaan in dieVEK.

Hy het in 1992 onderwys aan dieUniversiteit van Pretoria gaan studeer.

“Ek het gespesialiseer in wetenskap,wiskunde en aardrykskunde. Maar ek hetnooit ’n onderwyser geword nie.”

In 1999 het hy vakopleiding as elektri-siën deurloop.

Daarna het hy sy eie kontrakteursonder-neming begin.

Dit is toe dat die Here hom na sy wareroeping gelei het.

Hy het in 2007 sy teologie-sertifikaat bydie VEK-kollege in Pretoria voltooi.

Daarna het hy van 2009 tot 2011 ’nassistent-pastoor by die VEK in Gesina,Pretoria, geword.

Maar hy het begin moeg raak vir diemisdaad en die gejaagdheid van die stad.

“En toe kom ons Kathu toe. Daar was

aanvanklik net 15 lidmate toe ek by diekerk begin preek het. Ek is trots om te sêdeur genade bestaan ons gemeente nou uit180 lidmate.”

Bam se gesin en familie speel ’n grootrol in sy werk as pastoor.

Hy het sy vrou, Marietjie, in 2001 in

Pretoria ontmoet.“Ons het mekaar deur familievriende

ontmoet. Sy het eers gedink ek is ’nellendeling, maar eintlik was dit liefdemet die eerste oogopslag.”

Hulle is in 2004 getroud. Hul seun,Steven (4), is in 2010 gebore.

Toe die Bams Kathu toe trek, het Allanse ouers, Antoinette (72) en André (75),saamgekom.

“Ek is baie dankbaar dat hulle saammet ons hier kan bly. Hulle is fantastiesegrootouers vir Steven en bly self baieaktief.”

Hy is vol lof vir sy vrou. Marietjie het’n gawe vir haar rol as pastorievrou. “Syhet soveel geduld met die feit dat syeintlik haar man met die hele gemeentemoet deel.

“Onthou, toe sy met my getrou het, wasek nog ’n sakeman en nie ’n pastoor nie.Maar sy het my roeping haar eie gemaaken aanvaar. Ek is baie trots op haar.”

Die pastoor is passievol oor sy geloof engemeente.

“Ek wil hê hulle moet aanhou groei indie Heilige Gees.”

Sy planne vir die toekoms? “Ek wilgraag oor 20 jaar in Kathu aftree. Ek isbaie lief vir die dorp, maar ’n diensknegluister en sal gaan bly waar hy gestuurword.”

Oor die toekoms van die VEK Kathu ishy positief. “Daar is geen perke aan ditwat die Here kan doen nie.”

En dan moet ’n mens die moedbymekaarskraap om by dievoordeur uit te loop.

Ek het sommer vroeg tydens myeerste yskoue winter kennisgemaak met die toegevriesdevoorruit en die ongeduldigheidmet die spoed van die karverwar-mer.

Koue winters het natuurlik syvoordele. Onder al die warm kleresteek ’n mens makliker diewintervetjies weg.

Elke oggend is ’n gulde geleent-heid vir ’n koppie warm sjokolade.Die donsige winterskombers watdie bed net soveel gemaklikergaan maak.

Lekker aande wat voor dieverwarmer deurgebring kan word.

Ek begin tentatief die winters-klere uit die agterkant van die kasuitpak. Met ’n skok kom ek agterhoe baie my seun van die laastewinter gegroei het.

Die seisoene is nie al ding watdrastiese veranderinge bring nie.

“HIERDIE jaar gaan ons bibbervan die koue!” Oom Jan kykwantrouerig na die wolke en skudweer sy kop.

Ek kyk self op en sien nie ’nwolk in die lug nie. In die vroeësoel aandlug waarin ons nou siten braai, kan ek myself nie eensindink dat winter op pad is nie.

Maar soos die weke verbyglip,begin ek subtiele verskille in dieweer agterkom.

Die son sak al hoe vroeër. Eenaand kan jy nog met genoeg lig ná19:00 op die stoep sit en lees. Ennou sit ek al vroeg die stoepligaan.

Ek staan baie vroeg in dieoggende op. Waar die son mytydens my eerste koppie koffiegegroet het, kom hy nou eers oppad motor toe op.

Die katte se pels raak al hoedikker, en ewe skielik ag hulle ditweer aanvaarbaar om by ons opdie bed te kom slaap.

Ek begin die eerste baadjies entruie in die oggende sien.

Daar is tans nie ’n grasperk opons erf nie, maar ons bure het diepragtigste welige stukkie grasvoor hul huis. Ek kyk met ’ngroeiende ontsteltenis na diebruin kolle wat op die lappiegroen begin verskyn.

Ons mooi streek is een vanuiterstes as dit by seisoene kom.

Die Kalahari se herfs is hier. Endie herfs bly nie lank nie.

Ek bewe al klaar as ek dink aan

’n Mens kan jou begroting fynbeplan, maar soos die geldkennerswaarsku, kan jy ook nie besnoeiaan noodsaaklikhede soos motor-of mediese versekering nie.

Met Paasfees pas agter die rugwas daar padversperrings oral tebespeur.

Motoriste, fietsryers, publiekevervoermiddels en voetgangers isversoek om ekstra versigtig tewees.

As jy dus stadiger ry, sal jy nienet brandstof spaar nie, maar joulewe sal ook minder in gevaar

wees.Wat natuurlik baie sleg was, is

die brandstofprysverhoging in diemiddel van ’n skoolvakansie.

Het vakansiegangers hiervoorin hul begroting voorsieninggemaak?

Dit is nou alles goed en wel omstadiger te ry om brandstof tebespaar, maar wat van al diepaaie wat vol slaggate is? Sou ditreën waar ook al jy jou bevind, isslaggate skaars sigbaar in diepoele water. Net nog iets wat jousak finansieel skade kan aandoensou jy deur só ’n gat ry en ’nmotorband beskadig.

Weer is slaggate ook deel vanswak dienslewering deur ’nmunisipaliteit.

Jy word versoek om krag tebespaar deur onnodige toestellesoos geisers af te skakel, maar in

jou dorp brand daar straatligtedeur die dag.

Selfs nie Satan het dit nie

Jesaja 53:5: “Maar Hy is terwille van ons oortredinge deur-boor, ter wille van ons ongereg-tighede is Hy verbrysel; die strafwat vir ons die vrede aanbring,was op Hom, en deur sy wondehet daar vir ons genesing gekom.”

Die grootste krag en mandaatvan ons Christelike godsdiens isook die opstanding van Jesus uitdie dood.

Paulus is in die gevangenis

gegooi omdat hy die opstandingvan Jesus gepredik het.

En die opstanding uit die doodgee ook aan ons ’n geleentheid omop te staan uit ons verloresondige wêreld en in Jesus dieware lewe te ontdek.

Hieraan hou ons as Christenevas. Jesus lewe en is nie doodnie.

1 Korinthiërs 15:12: “As dit dangepreek word dat Christus uit diedode opgewek is, hoe sê sommigeonder julle dat daar geen opstan-ding van die dode is nie?”

1 Korinthiërs 15:13: “As daargeen opstanding van die dode isnie, dan is Christus ook nieopgewek nie.”

1 Korinthiërs 15:14: “En asChristus nie opgewek is nie, dan isons prediking vergeefs en vergeefsook julle geloof.”

Hierdie dinge word alleen virjou ’n waarheid en ontdekkingas jyself gered word, wederge-boorte en bekering deelagtigword.

Dan getuig die Heilige Geeshierdie dinge in ons lewe en onsweet dat ons aan Christusbehoort.

dieselfde. Dit is die resultaat van ’nmagiese proses waarvan OrangeRiver Cellars se wynmakersmeesters is.Om muskadel en jerepiko te maak

is dit belangrik dat die soet vrugvan die ryp wyndruif vasgevangword. Want sodra die druif se sapbegin gis – soos in die maak vanjou gewone tafelwyn – word diesuiker (soet!) in alkohol omgeska-kel.Soos die alkohol klim, daal die

suiker en word die wyn dus mindersoet (droog).Vir soetwyn moet dus verhoed

word dat die druiwesap gis. Daardiesonnige soet vrugtegeure wordgesoek, asook die alkohol om diewyn lyf te gee. So hoe dan nougemaak?Wat gebeur, is dat die wynmaker

spiritus by die druiwesap voegvoordat die gisting plaasvind. Diespiritus – gedistilleerde wyn – het’n stewige alkoholinhoud. Wanneerdit by die sap gevoeg word, verhoeddie spiritus dat die sap gis. Dieresultaat: geen gisting, geen verliesaan suiker. En jou wyn bly lekkersoet.Die verskil tussen muskadel en

jerepiko? Dieselfde proses, net metmuskadel moet die Muscat deFrontignan-druif gebruik word.Jerepiko kan ’n mens met enigewyndruif maak.Met die nuwe verpakking probeer

IN die internasionale rolprent-bedryf, en meer spesifiekHollywood, is daar rolprentewat ’n omkeerpunt in die bedryfveroorsaak het. ’n Rolprent watveroorsaak het dat die daarop-volgende rolprente volgens ’nnuwe standaard moet wees.Vir Suid-Afrika se rolprentbe-

dryf is dit Ballade vir ’nEnkeling. Dié fliek is gegrondop die gewilde televisiereeksvan die 1980’s, maar in die fliekkry die storie van Leon vanNierop ’n splinternuwe baadjie.Dit vertel die storie van dieskrywer Jacques Rynhard watverdwyn op die aand wat hy ’ngroot literêre prys ontvang. ’nJoernalis, Carina Human,besluit om ondersoek in te stel

NANDO’S KATHU held a griller competi-tion for the restaurant’s best chickengrillers.

These masters of the grill competed forthe honour to represent South Africa in theInternational Grillers Challenge in Vancou-ver, Canada. The grills were hot andsizzling on 26 March when the five contes-tants showed off their skills.

The five contestants were MacDonaldMatlabe, George Loabile, Tshepo Makhaba-sela, Lebogang Seikatlanelo and IshmealMoshineu.

Seikatlanelo won the honour of represen-ting Nando’s Kathu at the regional chal-lenge from 1 April to 12 June. If he moveson in the competition, Seikatlanelo willcompete at national level. The nationalfinals will be held on 7 July at Nando’scentral kitchen.

Jasper Matthee, the store manager atNando’s Kathu, is very proud of his grillersand hopeS that Seikatlanelo advances to thetop of the griller competition.

Marketing in 2014 and is currentlya final-year student in the Masterin Business Leadership (MBL)degree.He has been working at the

Dié merkwaardige man is dietrotse skoolhoof van die Laer-skool Kathu.

Hy het in 2006 by dié skool dieleisels oorgeneem, en is nogdolgelukkig ná byna tien jaaraan die stuur.

Van Niekerk het in dieNamakwaland-omgewing grootge-word. Die skool was so klein datdie laerskool- en hoërskoolkin-ders die geriewe gedeel het.

Hier het hy ook in 1976gematrikuleer.

Soos al die jong manne vandaardie era moes hy twee jaardiensplig in die destydse weer-mag doen.

Daarna het hy vier jaar lankonderwys in die Paarl gestudeer,waarna hy sy graad by Unisaontvang het. Hy het gespesiali-seer in Bybelkunde en geskiede-nis.

Later het hy sy studie vir ’nhonneursgraad in leierskap enbestuur aan die Universiteit vandie Vrystaat (UV) voltooi.

Hy het sy onderwysloopbaan in1982 by die Laerskool Calviniabegin waarna hy in 1990 Harts-water toe is.

Daarna het hy na die Laer-skool Kathu gekom, en nooitweer teruggekyk nie.

Van Niekerk is ’n man vanvele talente.

Hy is ook ’n gekwalifiseerdeblokman en het onder meer 16jaar ervaring in konstruksie.

Maar sy werklike passie bly

die onderwys. Om skoolhoof vaneen van die vinnig-groeiendsteskole in die land te wees vereis’n unieke benadering.

Die skool het gegroei van 672leerlinge in 2006 tot 2015 se 1 580leerlinge. Die Laerskool Kathuhet tans 56 heeltydse onderwy-sers en ’n ouergemeenskap van3 000 betrokke ouers.

“Dit is partykeer ’n uitdaging

om reg te luister,” sê VanNiekerk. “Hoewel die ouerswonderlike mense is, kan partyversoeke nogal onbillik wees” sêhy.

Maar ’n mens kan duideliksien dat Van Niekerk baie trotsop die skool se prestasies is.

“Die skool het 20ste in dielandwye 2014-Conquesta- akade-miese kompetisie gekom. Land-

wyd!”Volgens Van Niekerk help die

Laerskool Kathu se suksesse metsy emosionele ontwikkeling enook sy bestuursvermoë.

“Tussen die betrokke ouers, dieonderwysers en die leerlinge isons ysters.

“En yster slyp yster. Ons groeivanweë mekaar se talente.”

Hy is vol lof vir sy onderwy-

sers. “Almal is puik in hul werken ook ongelooflik toegewyd.

“En die leerlinge sal ek virniks verruil nie. Ek wil hoop aanhulle bring en hulle laat verstaandat die toekoms aan hullebehoort.”

Hammies van Niekerk beplanom die skool een van die beste inSuid-Afrika te maak. “Met dieregte ondersteuning is allesmoontlik.”

Onder sy belangstellings telook meubelrestourasie. Hy boertans met arabierperdmerries op’n plaas in Bestwood, nabyKathu. Verder is hy ook ’nywerige jagter.

Sy gesinslewe hou hom op sytone. “Ek kom uit ’n familie vanonderwysers, en my oudstedogter hou vandag ook skool,” sêhy trots.

Jomia (27) is tans ’n onderwy-seres by die Laerskool Noord-Kaap.

Sy jongste twee kinders, Naleth(16) en Herman (14), is tans indie Hoërskool Kathu.

“Ek is baie trots op mykinders. Hulle vaar goed inakademie en in sport. Dit het in’n groot mate te doen met diegoeie onderrig wat hulle by dieHoërskool Kathu ontvang.”

Sy vrou Lolita (Lollie) isvolgens Van Niekerk sy alles.Hulle is in 1985 getroud en kanterugkyk op ’n sterk huwelik van30 jaar.

Lollie is tans ’n onderwyseresby die Hoërskool Gamagara inDeben, naby Kathu.

“Dis vir my lekker om huis toete gaan, want daar kan ek tydsaam met my vrou en kindersdeurbring sonder enige druk vandie buitewêreld.”

burg, Campbell, Griekwastad, Volop,Niekerkshoop en Olifantshoek is verteen-woordig.Ina Meyer van Pretoria het haar beson-

derse kwiltwerk uitgestal en ’n insiggewen-de praatjie gelewer.Die sirkelpresident, Vonesse Gerber het

’n vriendskapskers vir vroue wat onderverdrukking, armoede, geweld en seksuelemisbruik ly, aangesteek.Deur die loop van die oggend is kerse ook

vir gesondheidsdienste, landbou, opvoeding,die kunste, openbare sake en leefstylaangesteek.

Die takke se lede het ook met hul talentein die kategorieë vir hekel- brei-, masjien-,piouterwerk, skilderkuns, fotografie,digkuns, gebak en die maak van lekkersmeegeding.Gerber (Niekerkshoop) is as vise-sirkel-

president gekies en Machel van Niekerk(Volop) as nuwe sirkelpresident.

Die gedugte span werk elke skoologgend saammet van die skool se onderwysers om seker te maak dat leerlinge veilig die besige Ben Albertsweg oorsteek. Dieskolierpatrollie bestaan uit ’n span van die skool se mees verantwoordelike leerlinge. Motoriste wat in die oggendeen smiddae Ben Albertsweg gebruik, word gevra om nie die spoedgrens te oorskry nie en ook bedag te wees datdaar voorskoolse kinders ook in die oggende afgelaai word.

Op die John Taolo Gaetsewe-byeen-koms in Kuruman het hy die spies31 m ver gegooi om stof in sy teen-standers se oë te skop. Vanweë diéprestasie het hy gekwalifiseer vir dieNoord-Kaapse atletiekbyeenkoms inKimberley. Hier het hy ook ’n eersteplek behaal en het sodoende deurge-dring na die Suid-Afrikaanse atletiek-byeenkoms in Johannesburg.

Op 20 Maart het Brink op dieSuid-Afrikaanse atletiekbyeenkoms sypersoonlike beste afstand gegooi – ’nallemintige 38,80 m. Met dié uitsteken-de gooi het hy ’n tweede plek op diebyeenkoms behaal.

DIE Laerskool Kathu se leerlinge het ’npassie vir hul nasionale sportspanne.

Die leerlinge en onderwysers trek gereeldhul nasionale kleure aan om hul ondersteu-ning aan die spanne te toon.

Met die onlangse Wêreldbeker-kriekettoer-nooi in Australië en Nieu-Seeland het diehele skool “groen” gegaan.

Hoewel die Proteas nie die toernooigewen het nie, is die skool steeds trots opdie land se krieketspelers, sê Hammies vanNiekerk, skoolhoof.
