LESSON OVERVIEW

The true account of the creation of the world from the mouth of God is found in Genesis 1:1-2:3. You will challenge the children to understand the importance of trusting in God’s plan for Creation as opposed to man’s ideas of evolution. You will explain how God spoke the world into existence on each of the six literal days of Creation. The children will not only discover what was created on each day but will also understand why God rested on the seventh day. For older children, there is a chart that compares some of the differences between Creation and evolution. Be prepared to discuss the chart. Answers in Genesis (answersingenesis.org) is an excellent resource for information that can help children discover the true answers about how everything came to be.

BODY

Wow! Those were awesome pictures of our world! Have you ever stopped to think about how it all began? [Hold up your Bible.] The answer to that question is found in your Bible. The Bible is all about beginnings. In fact, the first book of the Bible is Genesis which means to begin. Open up your Bibles and let’s start at the beginning.

Let me read what Genesis 1:1 says [Read Genesis 1:1]. Who was the only One at the beginning? [Allow children to respond.] It was God. And why was He there? [Allow children to respond.] God was there to create the heavens and the earth. God was the only witness to Creation because He was the only one there.

Let’s read this true account found in Genesis 1:3-4 [Read Genesis 1:3-4]. [Show Visual 1.] God just speaks and creates the light and darkness. He called the light, day, and the darkness, night. He then says, “The evening and the morning were the first day.” And then God said, “It is good.” Has He said anything about the sun yet? No. Keep listening, and we will learn about when God created the sun. Verse five tells us that by creating light and darkness, God begins the cycle of day and night. God creates the 24-hour day giving us daytime to work and play and nighttime to sleep. Let’s move on to the second day of Creation as we look at Genesis 1:6-8. [Read Genesis 1:6-8.] What did God separate? [Allow children to respond. Show Visual 2.] God just spoke and told some of the water to make the sky and the other water to settle below. Verse 9 tells us that dry land appears which God names earth, and the water around the land He calls seas. God just speaks and creates land and water.

[Show Visual 3.] On the third day, Genesis 1:11-13 tells us that God filled the earth with a variety of trees and plants that we still enjoy today. He also designed an awesome plan that allows plants and trees to reproduce after their own kind by using their own seeds. God just speaks and creates every growing thing.

[Show Visual 4.] On day four, Genesis 1:14-19 says that God creates special lights for the day and night. Those lights not only help us tell the difference between day and night, but they are the signs for our seasons and years. God just speaks and creates all the heavenly bodies in our universe.

[Show Visual 5.] On the fifth day [Genesis 1:20-23] God decides to fill the sky with all sorts of birds. He also fills the seas with a beautiful array of sea creatures of every size, from the largest whales to the smallest plankton. God blesses His creation and tells them to go and have more little ones after their own kind to keep our skies and seas full. God just speaks and creates all the flying and swimming creatures.

Let’s go on to see what God creates on day six. [Read Genesis 1:24-25.] What does God create? [Allow children to respond, then show Visual 6.] But wait! There’s more. Let’s read Genesis 1:26-28. [Read Genesis 1:26-28.] [Show Visual 7.] Out of every creature created, what makes man different? [Allow children to respond.] Man was the only one created in God’s image. That’s what makes you and me special to God. He told man to take charge and be responsible for all the other creatures. Since it was all good, God rested on the seventh day, not because He was tired, but because He had completed His creative work. It is a reminder for us to work hard during the week but to set aside time to rest and worship God because of His goodness to us.

Teacher’s Note: You can also choose to show this chart on Visual 8 that compares Creation to evolution if you have time. Explain the contrasts in thinking between both ideas. Show Visual 8. The following chart compares some of the ways the teachings of Creation and evolution are different. Let’s see how they differ.

Creation Evolution1. God – witness 1. No God – no witness2. Six literal days 2. Millions of years3. Divine design 3. Random chance4. Reproduce after their 4. Change (evolve) from one kind to a

own kind different kind5. Man created in God’s image 5. Man evolved from apes

Think about it! Who would you trust to give you the truth? God or man?

APPLICATION

Sadly, not everyone believes God’s eye-witness account of Creation. Instead, some people choose to believe man’s story of evolution. The word, “evolution” means change not beginning. Evolutionists don’t have a witness to what took place in the beginning. Their story of how the Earth, you, and every living thing came to be is very different than God’s eye-witness account recorded in the Bible. Evolution is based on the views of man which are constantly changing. Creation is based on the Word of God which never changes. Now that you have the facts, which one do you choose to believe? [Close in prayer.]

Goal of this Personal Training Time

We want children to accept the truth of Creation, and give them answers from God’s Word concerning Creation. They should understand that God spoke the world into existence and that the world was created in six literal days.

Discussion Questions

1. What does God’s Word say about how the world was created? (God created the world in six days. God spoke and the world was created.)

2. Before our lesson what did you believe about how the world came to be? Where did you learn it from? (Your churched children will probably say they believe in Creation and that they heard it at church. You may have an unchurched child who is totally unfamiliar with the account from the Bible. Be aware that some children will have questions.)

3. Do you have any questions about how the world was created? (Children may challenge you with questions about dinosaurs and what they learned about evolution in school. If you don’t have an answer, tell the child that you will try to find an answer for them. Use the Answers in Genesis website for information.)

PARENT CONNECTION

This week we learned about the six days of Creation. God spoke, and the world was created. Next time you and your child go for a walk, be intentional about observing the details and variety in nature. Since God made us responsible for His beautiful creation, discuss how you and your family can get involved in taking care of the environment where you live. Have fun with your child and enjoy your walk!
