Special Olympics - Fans in the Stands!Alamitos Beach, July 16, 2015!Story by Lon Salgren"!We gathered at the Hacienda Heights Community Center to take 3 busses to Alamitos Beach in Long Beach to watch beach volleyball. Kiwanis chaperones included Brad Manning, Pat Silva and Vern Moyer from the West Covina Club and Lon Salgren, Mahmood and his brother Hamid Bashir. We arrived at PCH at 9:43. What transpired next was a comedy of 3 busses, with two different destination addresses trying to find the site of the beach volleyball. We finally got to the courts at 11:04 only to find that all the stands were already full. So this event became the "Fans in whatever chairs you were smart enough to bring with you". Fortunately the Kiwanis chaperones all brought their own chairs, so we easily adapted to the situation."!Games were already going on at courts one and two, but we noticed another court was being prepped for a match. That is where we set up camp to watch Kenya vs. Findland2. It was a fun match with several nice volleys. Kenya took a 8-0 lead with Finland a bit slow to get into the match. However soon the match was 11-10 in favor of Kenya. It wound up being a close game with Kenya taking the match 15 to 11. The Div 35E, 35W and KIWIN'S were giving great cheers and whooping it up for the competitors. When it was done one of the officials said the kids were great and had a lot of spirit. He also informed us that this was the last match to be held on court four and we would need to move over to courts one and two for the remainder of the matches. "!As previously mentioned those courts were already occupied with spectators, so we did not have as good of a vantage point to see the remaining games. About 20 minutes after we had moved to court one, I noticed a group was dismantling their 10 x 10 popup. I informed the other chaperones, but their chairs were evidently well planted in the sand because they did not join me at the new location. At the new site I was able to get better photos of the matches. We next watched Finland1 play Serbia, final score Finland 15, Serbia 13. Next was Finland1 vs. Finland2. I should mention, despite the uniforms all being the same color it was easy to distinguish the two teams since Finland2 had two girls on it, Finland1 had none. "!

Key Club Div 35E - Ice Cream Social!Pathfinder Park, July 25, 2015!Story by Lon Salgren"!There was great weather for this event in the park. As it got warmer the breeze picked up. There were roughly 22 kids from Div 35E led by their LTG Sabrina Bodine. They began socializing and soon gravitated to the monkey bars. Mahmmod was handing out words of encouragement and soon the kids were telling him to "do it" too. I gave it a try and went all the way across, turned around, then dropped. The kids continued to goad Mahmood into doing it too. Mahmood initially protested that he couldn't, but that did not last too long. Mahmood led with his right hand, but when he switched to his left hand he went down! It turns out his left hand has a very weak grip due to his diabetes. "!

Next we started the organized games portion of the day. The kids were lined up, Sabrina assigned them a 1 or 2 which split them into two teams of 6. They were told to come up with a team name and cheer (those that have attended a Key Leader weekend may recognize this). The third team was composed of the Division leadership and also numbered 6. The first event was to pass a rubber band from one person to the next, then back using only a straw in their mouth. Next they repeated this with the end of the straw bent 90 degrees down. This was again repeated with the straw cut in half. The last time it was repeated with the short straw bend 90 degrees down. During the competition there were a lot of different techniques used to accomplish the task. I noticed toward the end that one team found it easier if they tilted the bend straw up with their lips so it put the bent end of the straw back to a near horizontal position. "!The next event was a relay race of sorts. The kids would work in pairs. One

blindfolded would be directed by verbal commands to make 3 circles around a chair, then move forward to a table. Using one hand they were to insert a clear plastic cup into a second. Then they went forward to a jumping rope in the grass and had to jump over the rope 3 times forward and back. Then they continued to the end where they traded places. The formerly blindfolded youth would now lead the other back through the same course. This time removing the plastic cup from the other cup. When they returned to the starting line another pair would take off. Some cheated by placing their hand on the chair which gave them the advantage of knowing where the chair was. This was eventually stopped by the officials. "!The next challenge involved 6 buckets and 3 sponges. They started off with a half full bucket and were told to transfer as much water as possible as quickly as possible into a second bucket at the end of the line. The sponges must travel over the first person to the second person, then under the second to the third, etc. When this was concluded both the first team (time-wise) and most water transferred got the most points. Did I forget to mention each winning team was given points and the scores were tallied. Sorry I can't report the results, I was laughing too much and taking pictures!"!Next we gathered and had ice cream. It was a fun day in the park with our SLP from Div 35E. Chaperones included Lon Salgren, Dave Wallach and Mahmood Bashir.

THE KIWANISCOPEGoldstone Beach Palooza!Seal Beach, July 24, 2015!Story by Angelina Susanto, Glen A. Wilson KIWIN'S"!.On Friday, July 24th CNH KIWIN'S Goldstone Division took a trip to Seal Beach where they had gloves, trash bags, and trash grabbers to do a beach cleanup. After cleaning the shores, the members walked around Main Street to eat Pier food. There, they were accompanied by the Jet, Crystal, and Diamond divisions. At the Palooza the four divisions competed in a Spirit Battle consisted of four rounds. After cheering with posters, spirit gear, and even cheerleaders from Los Altos, the Goldstone division claimed the Beach Palooza Spirit Stick and happily drove home from fun service-filled day."

THE KIWANISCOPE!!

!Story by Mahmood Bashir"!President Elect Anna Wu called our meeting to order at 7:05 AM.Dave Wallach was requested to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Dave got our patriotic juices flowing. Charlie Huff followed by offering the invocation. It was short and sweet in the familiar Huff manner. Next we sang a patriotic song, we did sing one very enthusiastically, unfortunately this reporter does not remember (a senior moment perhaps) what the song was, and who led us in the singing. We had a couple of Inter-Clubs. Rick Zook, Les Peterson, and Jacen Crehan from the Monrovia Club were in presence. From The West Covina Club, Brad Manning and Vern Moyer graced us with their presence. Lawrence Chan from Rowland High School Key Club was also in attendance. We introduced and welcomed our guests. Yes we did sing our "Welcome Song", as out of sync as ever, but with great gusto and enthusiasm. Members in attendance were Anna Wu, Charlie Huff, Grace Chan, Izzeldin Osman, Lon Salgren, Dave Wallach, Mahmood Bashir, and most notable and a great surprise, Robert Barba in his crisp uniform, looking very commanding indeed. Robert offered a preliminary report on the proceeds from the Fireworks Stand. It appears our hard work paid off and met our fundraising goal from the effort.

Rick Zook from Monrovia Club informed us of their yearly fundraiser "Taste of Old Town Monrovia" scheduled to be held in October. Monrovia Club has offered this event as a fundraiser to our SLP and other clubs, for each ticket they sell, a part of the proceeds will be returned to the club who sold the ticket. The tickets are $50.00 each, and $15.00 will be given back. We thank Monovia Club for their generosity, and hope our SLP and clubs take advantage of the offer. Its a win-win for all. Our guest speaker for the morning was Vern Moyer, Division-35 Chai for "Read Around the World" program. Vern presented us with an update on our clubs involvement and progress in this effort. He offered some eye opening statistics which validate the importance of this effort, and the difference it makes in improving the reading and comprehension skills of our youth. Vern also

commended all the clubs in our division for their support of the CNH 'First Lady's Project" by actively donating books to the youth and schools, community centers, and libraries in our communities. yes we did have an opportunity drawing this morning and luck Dave Wallach collected the loot. Your efforts matter. With the Canadian Government match, we have surpassed US$91 million raised in cash and pledges as of July 16, 2015. Thank you!#

Our momentum continues to build thanks to districts of all sizes from around the world. Austria, Belgium-Luxembourg, Capital, France-Monaco and Louisiana-Mississippi-West Tennessee recently formalized commitments to fulfill their district fundraising goals—and thus joined Taiwan and New Jersey in making district-wide commitments. #

“This was a reaffirmation of our goal and sends an important message to districts,” says Dennis Oliver, district coordinator for Louisiana-Mississippi-West Tennessee. “We are going to reach our goal.”#

In the coming month, eight more districts will consider formalizing their commitments. With less than US$19 million left to raise, district pledges bring us closer to reaching US$110 million by December 31, 2015. We’re almost there! #

Share our tremendous news with your club, district, family and friends and invite them to help us reach our goal. #

Sincerely,#

The Eliminate Project campaign team
