To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.

To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Story by David Malkin Gloria Mitchell is not new to our Kiwa-nis family. Gloria has spoken to our club for the past several years since our club joined hands with Soroptimist to fund scholarships for her teen par-ents. Gloria Mitchell is a second-generation bail agent and has been working in the bail industry for over 20 years. Following in the footsteps of her mother, Gloria received her bail license and has owned her own bail busi-ness, Gloria Mitchell Bail Bonds in Pomona, CA, for the past 15 years.

What makes Gloria such a wonderful bail agent is not the work she does every day in her office, but more importantly the work she does every day outside her office. Gloria has worked with Soropti-mist International in Puente Hills, CA and more recently with the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club in Hacienda Heights. Gloria is the past President of Soroptimist and she saw an unique opportunity to branch off and work with teenage mothers.

Gloria Mitchell was at a loss eight years ago when she found out her then 16-year-old daughter, Can-dice, was pregnant. She knew being a teen mother would profoundly impact her child’s life, but she did not know what she could do to help her daughter stay in school and cope with the challenges of being a teen moth-er. One thing was certain: Gloria was going to stand by Candice and provide her with all of the love and support she needed to have her baby and continue her education. After high school officials told Gloria to take her daughter out of school because she might become a distraction to other students, Candice began attending an adult school where she also took part in a support program for pregnant teens and teen mothers.

At the time, Gloria was president of the Puente Hills Soroptomist Club, and she proposed that the club work with a local school to help pregnant teens and teen parents learn about the resources and op-tions available to them. “We wanted to start something that would inspire them and show them that there are people who are willing to help, but they needed to stay in school and continue to improve their lives so they could im-prove the lives of their children,” Gloria said. Later on, Gloria started a nonprofit group called TEA For You (Teen Mothers Excelling through Adversi-ties) so she could do more outreach to help other teen parents. Today, TEA For You hosts programs that attract as many as 220 participants at 15 different schools in Los Angeles County. Gloria is working to bring the program to San Bernardino County as well. Every May, the nonprofit hosts a luncheon for pregnant teens and teen moms and dads. The event includes presentations by former teen moms and dads who overcame their adversities to become doctors, law-yers, dentists, and professionals in other fields—as well as parents. In addition to providing resource information and encouragement to teen parents, TEA hosts essay contests where teen mothers can earn money for college. The nonprofit awards 25 scholarships from $200 to $1,000 every year, of which the Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights sponsors some. Gloria’s daughter, Candice, went on to become a licensed cosmetologist and bail bonds agent.

Story by David Malkin Our speaker this week was a member of our own Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club, Charles Karsch. Currently there are 27 separate clubs serving Los Angeles County. Charles is the Director of the East SGV Boys and Girls Club, which has two locations, La Puente and Baldwin Park. Charles shared with us the history of the club and plans for the future, which includes the possible merger of the East and West SGV Boys and Girls Clubs, which includes Monterey Park and Rosemead. The following history was taken from their web site. For over 40 years, the SGV Boys & Girls Club has ben in the forefront of youth development, working with young people from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances throughout the Eastern San Gabriel Valley. EVBGC has actively sought to enrich the lives of girls and boys whom oth-er youth agencies have had difficulty in reaching. They are dedicated to ensuring that our communi-ty's disadvantaged youngsters have greater access to quality programs and services that will en-hance their lives and shape their futures. Their history is rooted in youth development issues. The Club was founded in response to various community concerns such as levels of youth delinquency, gang involvement and drug use. Since our inception we have been advocating for funding and services to meet the needs of youth in this and surrounding communities. Guided by a philosophy which views the hours after school as the time when youth are particularly at risk due to a lack of both appropriate supervision and constructive activities, the Club has strived to fill that void. Their initial efforts began humbly. They operated a small storefront with merely a few table games and a ping-pong and pool table. As we became accepted by the youth coming to their Club, they be-gan to gain their trust and were able to determine some of their unmet needs. The most pressing was merely having a safe place to go after school and the nurturing relationship with a caring adult. Many of these children have parents who work and do not return home until early evening. The East Valley Boys & Girls Club is part of a nationwide affiliation of local, autonomous organiza-tions that work to help young people of all backgrounds develop the qualities they need to become responsible citizens and leaders. They offer daily access to a broad range of programs in five Core Program Areas: Education and Career Development, Character and Leadership Development, Health

Blankets of Love For Pediatric Patients

Proton Treatment Unit June 12, 2015

Story by David Malkin Last March 16, 2013, the Kiwanis Club of Hacien-da Heights, in partnership with Jennifer Strinz of the Orange Grove Builders’ Club, delivered 200 blankets to Loma Linda University Medical Cen-ter. Mathew Malkin, MD, an anesthesiologist at LLUMC, and the son of one of our members, sub-mitted a request to have the blankets donated to the pediatric patients in the Loma Linda Proton Treatment Unit. Two years later we received an-other call for additional blankets. A call was put out and our honorary members, Ted and Nancy Strinz, found 18 more completed blankets at Orange Grove Builders’ Club. During the past two years staffing had changed at LLUMC and contacts were lost. With the help of Dr. Mathew Malkin again, he was able to put us in contact with the new supervisors and help coordinate the delivery of the addi-tional 18 blankets last Friday (June 12, 2015). Needless to say, the supervisor of the Proton Treatment Unit was very thankful for our donation. The blankets were given to the children who are undergoing a series of Proton treatments for brain tumors over a period of multiple weeks.

We've reached US$91 million!!

The 100th annual Kiwanis International Convention brought numerous reasons for the Kiwanis family to celebrate and helped set the stage for our final six months. A few of our favorite moments included: President Maria Palazzolo announced a US$3 million pledge by Key Club International. The gen-

erous contribution—the largest gift made by Key Club to one cause—brings Service Leadership Programs to their US$7 million goal for The Eliminate Project.

We reached a milestone US$91 million in cash and pledges—thanks in part to Key Club’s pledge and the generous matching program by the Canadian Government, UNICEF Canada and the Ki-wanis Foundation of Canada. That represents 50 million lives that will be saved or protected from maternal and neonatal tetanus.

Cooks prepared 240 gallons of IHOP’s famous buttermilk pancake batter for the Monumental Pancake Lunch. Kiwanis members and Indy residents lined the circle to enjoy 12,000 pancakes, 189 gallons of maple syrup, 94 pounds of butter and 625 gallons of coffee. And more than US$6,100 was given to The Eliminate Project.

Nearly 2,000 club and individual supporters commemorated our fundraising success during an exclusive celebration event for The Eliminate Project.

We shared a new video showing the impact of the Kiwanis family dollars in the fight to elimi-nate maternal and neonatal tetanus.

These moments—and our success—are only possible through our work together. Let’s use this success to build momentum for our final march to victory. Now is the time. We need every member of the Ki-wanis family to continue working side-by-side until we reach our goal and finish what we set out to accomplish.
