Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) announced that its 100th LNG car-rier named Maran Amphipolis was deliv-ered to its owner after its departure from Okpo Shipyard on July 23. DSME reached a significant milestone of 100th LNG carrier construction in about 2 decades after its first delivery of LNG carrier in 1995. A total of 456 LNG carriers which transport eco-friendly LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) have been built to date since its first con-struction in 1959. DSME has built about a quarter of 422 LNG carriers currently oper-ational around the globe. With an order backlog of 50 LNG carriers, DSME has cemented its leading position as the worlds largest producer of LNG carriers. Specifically, DSME has shifted market par-adigm by building membrane type LNG carriers, instead of moss type which was once DSMEs mainstay product. Moreover,

DSME has spear-headed changes like developing nat-ural gas-powered LNG carriers, Partial Re-liquefaction System (PRS), etc., to meet ever more stringent environ-mental regulatory requirements. DSME has written new chapters in history with devel-opment of new technologies related to LNG, like winning an order for worlds first ice-breaking LNG carrier in 2014 and deliv-ering worlds first LNG FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas) facilities in 2016. With those efforts coming to fruition, DSME delivered as many as 35 LNG carriers in

2014 alone. That represented the largest annual order for LNG carriers ever placed at single shipyard. Having achieved the mile-stone of 100th LNG carrier delivery, DSME is moving to place more intensive focus on research and development in the field of LNG carrier, a high value-added vessel.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) announced on August 2 that 4 ship owners decided to provide shipbuild-ing funding worth USD 470 million earlier than scheduled. Those shipyards have maintained close relationship of trust with DSME for an extensive period of time. In addition, DSME has discussed with a cli-

ent on early payment of advance worth USD 150 million for offshore projects and received a positive reply. The shipbuilding funding worth USD 470 million is scheduled to be deposited in late August and early September, while the off-shore plant construction funding worth USD 150 million is expected to be received

by the second half of this year. Therefore, a liquidity worth about USD 620 million will be secured by DSME. After all, aforesaid funding is expected to give a significant respite to DSME which has confronted with imminent crisis in the mist of difficulty with repayment of long-term CP (Commercial Paper) due and payable by September.

Those fundings reflect strong relationship of trust between ship owners and DSME despite concern in the market over difficul-ties facing the shipbuilder. Above-mentioned ship owners and clients are said to have recently decided to make

earlier payment based on their strong con-fidence in the ability of DSME to overcome crisis even in the midst of unfavorable busi-ness environment such as downturn in global shipping market and persistent decline in international oil prices.

Meanwhile, DSME will carry out its self-res-cue plan expeditiously to create more sta-ble business environment and do more to ensure timely delivery of ongoing projects.

The Korean Register of Shipping (KR) announced that it was recently appointed as IIA (Independent Inspection Agency) and DAA (Designated Approval Agency) by the U.S. DOT (Department of Transportation) for containers used for transporting hazard-ous materials. Having been awarded inspection rights, KR will carry out works related to inspection and approval of the U.N. Standard compliant pressurized containers, portable tanks, and MEGC (Multiple Element Gas Container), as well as U.S. DOT standard compliant tanks used for transportation of hazardous materi-als. All hazardous materials containers used in the United States are required to undergo mandatory inspection and certification pur-suant to the standards set forth by the U.S. DOT for distribution without restraint. Thus, KR has become the only agency in Asia which has both IIA and DAA statuses. Most inspection agencies appointed by the U.S. DOT have only either of the two status-es. Only 3 agencies worldwide, including the KR, have both statuses.

Having both IIA and DAA statues, KR will be able to carry out works related to inspec-tion and certifica-tion of products used for transpor-tation of wider range of hazard-ous materials. That would help ease entry of domestic manu-facturers into Chinese markets in which over 30% of U.S. DOT standard compliant hazardous materials containers are market-ed while helping boost exports by domes-tic manufacturers to the U.S. market. An official from KR said, We will step up efforts to be named as inspection agency for the U.N. standard compliant containers used for transporting hazardous materials by railway and road, as well as hazardous materials containers that conform to stan-dards of Canada and Europe, in our endeavor to provide one-stop services for

hazardous materials containers and inspections, rather than remaining compla-cent about the latest appointment as IIA and DAA by the U.S. DOT.For certification business which KR is pro-moting as future growth engine, KR was appointed as boiler inspection agency by India in 2014 and as certification agency for export-grade construction steel materials by Singapore last year. This year, KR is making smooth sail towards its goal of building glob-al certification belts following its entry into Chinese product certification market and appointment as IIA and DAA by U.S. DOT.

ABB alliance partner Solar Impulse com-pletes round-the-world flight with zero fuel, showing we can run the world without con-suming the earth. As a pioneering technol-ogy leader, ABB is putting this message into practiceSolar Impulse has made history by com-pleting the first ever round-the-world flight powered only by energy from the sun. The plane landed at its starting point in Abu Dhabi at 04:05 am local time, after a final leg of 48 hours and 37 minutes from Cairo. This is a truly historic achievement, with tremendous symbolic significance, said ABB CEO, Ulrich Spiesshofer. It demon-strates clearly that with pioneering spirit and clean technologies, we can run the world without consuming the earth. On behalf of everyone at ABB, congratulations to Bertrand Piccard, Andr Borschberg, and the rest of the Solar Impulse team. We are extremely proud to have been able to contribute to this remarkable project.ABB forged the innovation and technology alliance with Solar Impulse because what the project has achieved in the air, ABB is doing on the ground, as a pioneer of power and automation technologies for 125 years in Switzerland. Its a historic first for renewable energy and clean technologies, not only for aviation,

said Solar Impulse pilot, initiator and chairman Bertrand Piccard, on arrival. By combining their respective strengths, Solar Impulse and ABB were able to show how break-through innovation can be transformed into credible solu-tions, and how ener-gy can be more effi-ciently produced, stored and used to create a cleaner world.Solar Impulse co-founder, CEO and pilot Andr Borschberg confirmed the value of this partnership: The mission would not have been possible without the expertise and support of ABB and other organiza-tions that contributed to the project. As part of its innovation and technology alliance with Solar Impulse, ABB provided experts to support the mission, including engineers who served as embedded members of the ground crew throughout the round-the-world flight. To attempt the round-the-world flight, Solar Impulse had to confront many of the chal-lenges that ABB is solving on the ground for

its customers, such as maximizing the power yield from solar cells, integrating renewable energy into the electricity distribution systems, and improving energy efficiency.During its flight around the world, Solar Impulse made stopovers on four continents (Asia, North America, Europe and Africa), and flew across two oceans (the Pacific and the Atlantic), as well as the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Peninsula. On the way, it set several new aviation records, including that of the longest solo duration for an air-plane (117 hours, 52 minutes) achieved by Andr Borschberg on the leg from Japan to Hawaii, and the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a solar airplane achieved by Bertrand Piccard.

Korean Register (KR) has announced that it has significantly expanded its land-based test facilities for Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) by opening a brand new specialist facility.KR has been conducting type approval testing of BWMS since 2004, with a con-sortium of six different partners. KR and its partners segregate the duties, taking into account each organizations specialist expertise. This range of expert knowledge and high quality services was recognized when KR was accepted as the first Independent Laboratory in Asia to be accredited by the United States Coast Guard (USCG IL).Manufacturers who have already secured BWMS type approval from their administra-

tions or have developed new equipment and want to secure USCG type approval testing are currently facing long delays because there are not enough test facilities. As a result, there is a significant bottle-neck of manufacturers awaiting USCG type approval testing, particularly land-based testing. To mitigate this situation, KR and one of its partners, Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI) agreed to work together to establish and to build additional test facil-ities to meet this demand. On 22 July, 2016, KR and KOMERI and the consortium part-ners celebrated the completion of the building works for the new land-based test facilities. The test facility, which already offered the

largest capacity for BWMS testing of any-where in the world, has been expanded through the addition of three further units, and it now offers a total testing capacity for Max. TRC 500 m3/h of BWMS together with four testing slots.KRs goal is to meet the growing demand for testing and certifying services from BWMS manufacturers around the world, and by providing high quality specialist ser-vices to support the development of improved, more reliable BWMS.The new facility will be approved by the USCG in September and at the same time will become fully operational for land-based testing for USCG type approval as well type approval testing for other Administrations under the IMOs G8 guidelines.

Commenting on the completion of the building works, Dr. B. S. Park, Chairman and CEO of KR said, KR and its consor-tium partners already offer the most expert skills, specialist knowledge and the highest

technical capabilities of any test facility any-where in the world. With this new facility we will be able to offer significantly increased capacity and enhanced type approval ser-vices to BWMS manufacturers, ready for

the Ballast Water Convention to enter into force. At the same time KR will continue to support its global customers with high quality expert services tailored to their busi-ness needs.

Manufacturers and industrial operators can now access more detailed sensor diagnos-tics in harsh operating environments using the IP67-rated, Allen-Bradley ArmorBlock IO-Link master from Rockwell Automation. The device builds on the companys IO-Link portfolio with event and process timestamping capabilities for on-machine applications. The new IO-Link master stores up to 40 timestamps of sensor events on each chan-nel. This event history can help users track changes and more easily diagnose issues. Input timestamps of all sensor data also can be sent to the controller upon a change of state. These and other diagnostics available through the device can reduce issue-resolu-tion time by as much as 90 percent, improve preventive maintenance and opti-mize overall system performance. The ArmorBlock IO-Link master with IO-Link-enabled sensors can aid end users

in creating smarter operations without a complete overhaul, said Kevin Gagliostro, product manager, Rockwell Automation. They can deploy the technology to moni-tor temperature, and margin-indication or proximity parameters in critical processes. They can also target problem areas where better diagnostics are needed to remedy issues. While the new ArmorBlock IO-Link master is ruggedized for use in harsh applications, the Rockwell Automation portfolio also includes an in-cabinet solution for light applications. The on-machine option requires only a single cable from the cabinet, reduc-ing the number and length of cable runs and potential failure points. The ArmorBlock IO-Link master includes connectivity for up to eight IO-Link sensors. The master and sensors share an IP address, helping end users reduce the cost and time to commission equipment.

Sundong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (SSME) announced on August 25 that it held a naming ceremony for 2 units of 158,000-ton oil tankers ordered by Norway-based Nordic American Tankers. This event was attended by SSME President Kim Cheol-Nyeon, Nordic American Tankers Chairman Herbjrn Hansson, Marianne Damhaug, the Minister Counselor at Norwegian Embassy in Korea, MaeKyung Media Group Chairman Jang Dae-hwan, and other related officials. These vessels were named as NORDIC STAR by Marianne Lie, Vice-Chairman of Nordic American Offshore and as NORDIC SPACE by Siv Helset, wife of Jan Erik Langangen, Director of Nordic American Tankers, respectively. These oil tankers, ordered in the second half of 2017, measure 277m in length, 48m in width, and 23.1m in height with a carry-ing capacity of 158,000 tons and feature energy-saving design developed indepen-dently by SSME. These vessels have opti-mized design and adopted G-type (Green Ultra long stroke) engine that increased fuel efficiency, reducing fuel consumption by over 10% compared to existing ship

design. Moreover, these vessels meet the EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) requirements to minimize green-house gas emis-sions. SSME has been on track to cope with changes in the market based on constant research and development, including upgrade of medium-to-large tanker and ordinary commercial vessel fleets into eco-friendly models that provide over 10% fuel-saving effects to accommo-date the rising demand for eco-friendly vessels amid enforcement of ever more stringent international environmental regula-tions. An official from Nordic American Tankers said, Over 90% of Nordic American Tankers fleets have been built at Korean shipyards, which reflects strong trust with Korean shipbuilders. The ship owner has maintained healthy financial conditions

based strict non-borrowing management. Significantly, this project will help pave the way for forming long-term partnership. An official from Nordic American Tankers expressed satisfaction, saying, These oil tankers fully accommodated the needs for the safety of crew, vessels, and environ-ment which we take as major priority. We are deeply impressed as they are the first newbuild vessels to be delivered to us in 5 years after we took the delivery from Samsung Heavy Industries in 2010 and 2011.

As projects grow larger and more complex, automation technologies need to improve capital efficiency and project schedules. More projects are turning to Electronic Marshalling with CHARacterization Module (CHARM) technology an integral part of the DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS) to accommodate changes and deliver projects on time and within budget. From its first installation in 2010, Electronic Marshalling has now logged over ten billion hours of operation on its way to saving an estimated $500 million at over 1000 cus-tomer sites.During design and construction, Electronic Marshalling condenses control room space requirements, eliminates multicore cables from field to control room, and reduces commissioning hours. This proven technolo-gy enables field wiring to be landed directly on the IO card, regardless of signal type or control strategy. Electronic Marshalling with CHARMs technology is one of the corner-stone technologies of Emersons Project Certainty initiative targeted at improving cap-ital project performance.

Field wires are ter-minated on CHARM terminal blocks, allow-ing any signal type to be landed on any channel, elimi-nating the need for cross-wiring and marshalling panels. Each I/O channel is mapped to its appro-priate controller electronically through the DeltaV system software.Electronic Marshalling with CHARMs allows hardware and software to be fully independent of each other from design to automatic loop commissioning. Electronic Marshalling replaces traditional marshalling and compresses project engineering schedules for greenfield plants, brownfield migrations, and every day changes. Commissioning time is also reduced with Electronic Marshalling.Recently, the flexibility of Electronic Marshalling allowed one petrochemical team to design and install a new process automation sys-

tem in 50% less time as compared with conventional I/O approaches. In that same project, Electronic Marshalling was credit-ed with saving 19% in installation costs and 15% in design costs.Across all industries, the market is reacting positively to these advances because cus-tomers are seeing results: reduction in proj-ect complexity, accommodation of late changes, and reduced costs, said Bruce Greenwald, DeltaV platform business development manager. Our development takes advantage of the system and field intelligence to automate much of the previ-ously manual and hazardous work.

Karpowership, part of the Turkish energy group Karadeniz Holding, has placed an order for a total of twelve 18V 51/60 engines with a capacity of 18.9 MW per engine with MAN Diesel & Turbo. Six of the engines are to be delivered during the remainder of this year, with a further six at the beginning of 2017. An additional frame-work agreement sets out the conditions for the acceptance of another 48 units. As with previous orders, the engines will be deployed in the Powership fleet of the Turkish business. For this purpose, ballast transport-ers, heavy transport ships and barges are converted into floating power stations, under their trademark name Powerships. Apart from the engines, MAN will also deliver the control and automation equipment for the floating power stations, as well as further sys-tem and electrical hardware.MAN and Karpowership have been teach-ing power stations to swim since 2009. This is a crucial order for our company from a very important customer. We are connected to Karpowership through a long-lasting partnership, and we are proud and happy to be able to further contribute

to the Powership concept with our technology. The Powerships pro-vide electrical ener-gy in areas where it is urgently needed, and thereby help to alleviate pressing energy shortages, said Wayne Jones, Member of the Ex- ecutive Board for Global Sales and After Sales at MAN Diesel & Turbo.Karpowership is the only company world-wide which operates a complete fleet of Powerships - at present, the active fleet comprises a total of nine ships, offering a power capacity range between 30 and 470 MW. The new ships, also fitted with MAN engines, will be used all around the globe: Powerships mean flexibility, explains Dr. Tilman Ttken, Vice President MAN Diesel & Turbo and European Head of Sales Power Plants. The areas of deploy-

ment will be in various parts of Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. Two ships from the fleet with MAN engines are currently in use in Lebanon, stabilising the energy supply of the capital city, Beirut. Since spring 2013, the Karadeniz Powership Fatmagul Sultan has been feeding into the distribution network of the capital city, with a capacity of around 203 MW. It is driven by eleven MAN V51/60 18-cylinder Dual Fuel engines. Karadeniz Powership Orhan Bey is also anchored off Lebanon.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) issued a public disclosure of its 2Q 2016 consolidat-ed earnings on July 27.According to a regulatory filing, during April-June period HHI racked up 9.8627 trillion Korean won (hereinafter referred to as won) in sales while operating income stood at 557.2 billion won, bringing accu-mulated sales and operating profits for the first half of this year to 20.1355 trillion won and 882.4 billion won respectively.HHI attributes operating profits for two con-secutive quarters to a series of drastic and comprehensive restructuring measures put in place since 2014 by the incumbent top management, and strong performances of Hyundai Oilbank, its refining subsidiary. An HHI officer said, Stabilization of manu-facturing processes for offshore plant busi-ness, change orders received from its off-shore plant business clients, and increased building volume of ships that HHI won at profitable prices outweighed the 260 billion won one-off cost for the voluntary retirement

program. Continued efforts to reduce materi-al costs for non-ship-building businesses including Engine & Machinery, Electro Electric Systems and Construction Equipment also played a role for the profits. The official added, It is encouraging to post profits for two consecutive quarters but we still have a long way to go. Bearing in mind the 80% drop in new orders for our shipbuild-ing business for the first six months of this year, we will continue to faithfully implement the management improvement plan to facili-tate sustainable performance. Meanwhile, Samil PwC, a local member of the global accounting firm PwC, announced on July 26 that HHIs 3.5 trillion won worth of manage-ment improvement plan is good enough for it to make operating profits and secure liquidity

even in the worst case scenario.HHI also held a board of directors meeting and decided to sell Hyundai Finance Corporation and Hyundai Venture Investment Corporation as a part of the proposed management improvement plan. With the decision to dispose of all of its financial arms including Hyundai Futures, Hi Asset Management and Hi Investment & Securities, HHI will accelerate its business reorganization efforts with much more focus on its core businesses.
