IMAGINE having to evacuate at asplit second’s notice - having toleave everything behind, inclu-

ding your house, belongings, pets, farm animals and even your childrenif they are not with you at that time.

This is the reality of the Fukushi-ma Dai-ichi nuclear disaster in Ja-pan, where three reactors melteddown on March 11, 2011.

In the wake of this ongoing crisisat earthquake-ravaged nuclearplants in Japan, environmental ex-perts have warned a nuclear powerfacility at Thyspunt near Oyster Baycould spark a similar catastropheacross the Kouga region.

According to activist groups, theThyspunt Alliance, and Greenpeace, who are fighting Eskom’s proposed

power station in the area, the impactstudy presented by Eskom is fatallyand legally flawed.

At a meeting held last Thursday, climate and energy campaigner, Fer-rial Adam from Greenpeace said thatthere is no truth in Eskom’s state-ment that nuclear energy is cheap, asolution to the shortage of energy andwill contribute towards job creation.

“At a cost of R240 billion rand, con-structing a nuclear power plant is farfrom cheap. Furthermore, in the lastfive years, renewable energy hasgrown 22 times more than nuclearenergy. And when it comes to job cre-ation, renewable energy is at the topof the list and not nuclear energy. With renewable energy over 148 000permanent jobs will be created by2050, on the other hand, a mere 1 300jobs will be vacant during the con-struction phase of the nuclear plant

and once that is completed thenumber of jobs will rapidly declineto less than 200 by the eighth year ofconstruction,” said Ferrial.

“Nuclear waste is everything butsafe. It is important to remember thathigh radioactive waste cannot be re-moved from site, and this waste canbe active for up to 240 000. Should a nu-clear melt down occur at Thyspunt, like at Fukushima, and the prevailingwind is blowing, a plume of radiationwill cover St Francis Bay and JeffreysBay within minutes. Yet, Eskombrushes over this risk by maintainingthat the predominant wind will blowradiation out to sea, posing little or norisk in the event of a melt down.

“Infrastructure is another seriousconcern with the Eskom consultantssaying that there is no serious dan-ger of flooding and damage caused toaccess roads to Thyspunt. Yet, the StFrancis access road has had beendamaged and closed numerous timessince 1996 due to flooding. There isstill a temporary bridge over theSand River due to the bridge beingwashed away in floods in 2011. Howconstruction of the plant, as well asthe future movement of highly radio-active waste will take place in theevent of flooding, is simply not an-swered in the Impact Study.

“There is absolutely no savings orbenefits from nuclear energy - it istoo little, too late at too high a price.”

Another point of concern is thatthe traffic between Jeffreys Bay andHumansdorp will also increase dra-matically. “It is estimated that therewill be 1 200 plus additional vehicleson the road, of which 749 will be con-struction trucks. This will increasethe usual trip of 20 minutes betweenJeffreys Bay and Humansdorp to upto 55 minutes,” said Ferrial.

’nDuur kamera en my werk se selfoon is ookgesteel.

Ditis geweldig harde werk. In moeilike

FFRANFURT TO JEFFREYS BAY: A fewcrashes, an injured knee, endless po-lice controls and political unrest have

done nothing to dampen the spirit of anavid biker from Frankfurt.

After six months of intensive planning -which included obtaining no less than 14 visas- Joachim Kaeufl (46) climbed onto his BMWGS 1200cc motorbike and set off on an epic jour-ney through Africa, covering 19 countries andtravelling 17 600km in less than eight weeks.

Fulfilling a lifelong dream, Kaeufl first leftFrankfurt on December 18 armed only with hishelmet, protective clothing, his backpack anda heart full of adventure.

After countless hours on his motorbike andspending several nights sleeping in the bushsoaking wet, he arrived in Jeffreys Bay on May15 without having one flat tyre or having to payone bribe.

Due to time constraints and work obliga-tions, Kaeufl had no other choice than to com-plete his journey in two stages.

The first stage saw him leaving Frankfurt inthe middle of December last year, travellingthrough France and taking the ferry fromFrance to Morocco. As each day passed fromthere onwards, he could tick off Western Saha-ra, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso,Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Cameroon.

Once he arrived in Cameroon on January 18and after spending only one day there, he hadto return to his hometown in Europe. He deci-ded to leave his motorbike with trusted friendsand took the first flight back home - with theknowledge that he will return as soon as possi-ble to continue this journey of a lifetime.

That day came on April 18 when he onceagain left Frankfurt for Cameroon, arrivingthere on April 20.

Fromtherehis journeybymotorbike tookhimalong Gabon, Congo Brazaville, the DemocraticRepublic of Congo, Angola, Namibia, Cape Townand, finally, Jeffreys Bay where he could kick offhis shoes, wash off the mud, sit back and relaxwith old friends he known since 1990.

“Kaeufl first visited us in 2010 for the SoccerWorld Cup. At that time he already said thatthe next time he will be visiting us, it will beon the back of a motorbike,” said his friendKirsten Zank from the Ocean Bay LuxuryGuesthouse in Jeffreys Bay.

“I did not belief a word he said at that time, and look now, here he on his motorbike, justas he said he would be.”

But this was only for a few days, as Kaeufl

once again had to leave for Frankfurt on May15 - two days after he arrived in Jeffreys Bay.

Just why did Kaeufl decided to exploreNorth Africa on the back of his motorbike?

“This trip has been in my mind for a verylong time. The best way to explore a new coun-try is on the back of a motorbike. Although itis hard work to spend hours at a time on a mo-torbike, one does not only see much more ofa country, but you are also much more flexible, can hide easier from danger and take backroads not accessible to motor vehicles,” saidKaeufl, who has been doing off-road rallies forthe past ten years.

According to Kaeufl, Nigeria was the mostdangerous leg of his journey.

“Nigeria was a real war zone due to the cur-rent political uproar. I was bombarded withendless roadblocks, at the least ten, I even hadsome difficulty at the border post and every-where you looked were angry people walkingaround with big weapons.

“I think the agility of my motorbike, my hel-met and the fact that I did not have much lug-gage with me, kept me safe in most instances.”

And the most challenging?“Definitely the road, or rather the lack there-

of, inCongoBrazaville. There is only one streetin the whole of the country and I had to travel1 000km on off road terrain,” said Kaeufl.

“It took me one week to complete this dis-tance as I could only travel 100km a day beforenightfall. The road is so bad and the mud sodeep that I crashed three times - with twocrashes being only five minutes apart. Duringone of these crashes I hurt my knee and willhave to go and see a doctor.

“During this time, I was left with no otherchoice than to put up ‘camp’ in the middle ofthe bush next to the road, while being soakingwet. I was wet from head to toe for two wholedays.”

During his travels he had the privilege tovisit various tourist sites, including one of themost famous landmarks in Africa, the GreatMosque of Djenné - which is the largest mudbrick building in the world. The mosque is lo-cated in the city of Djenné, Mali on the floodplain of the Bani River. The first mosque onthe site was built around the 13th century, butthe current structure dates from 1907.

Other highlights include visits to the oldestcolonial settlement in Senegal, old slaveryfords and beaches in Ghana and the rain forestin Cameroon.

“If I had to chose one country that stood outfrom the rest, it will be Mali,” said Kaeufl.

“At the end of the day I can say that I wastruly blessed on this journey of mine, and thatI did not have one bad experience.”

After sixmonths ofintensiveplanning,JoachimKaeufl (46)climbed ontohis BMW GS1200ccmotorbikeand set offon an epicjourneythroughAfrica,covering 19countriesandtravelling17 600kmin lessthan eightweeks.Photo:MONIQUEBASSON
