Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE)† ran

into problems with its policy to lower private

high school tuition. At first, the MOE said only

households2 with an annual3 income of less

than NT$600,000 would have the lower tuition.

This would drop the price to be the same as that

at public high schools: a little over NT$6,000 per

semester. However, many schools and parents

felt misled.4 There was so much protest5 that

the government then offered subsidies6 to

families with an annual income of less than

NT$900,000. In addition, some private schools

have offered help to students who still do not

meet the MOE’s guidelines.7

WHEN I was a kid, my family didn’t celebrate Father’s Day. My

dad insisted that it had been invented by the greeting card

industry. The purpose was to persuade1 people to buy more cards.

Therefore, the proper2 way for us to show respect3 on Father’s Day

was to ignore the holiday completely.

I’m not sure that Dad was really happy about this arrangement.4

After all, who enjoys being forgotten? Although we celebrated Mother’s

Day every year, poor Dad was just ignored. He worked so hard to look

after my two brothers and me, but we never acknowledgedu it on this

holiday for fathers. Still, he never complained5 and never stopped

working to give us everything he could.

Last year, I became a dad myself. I now have a beautiful

daughter, Yún Qiàn（筠茜）. Her English name is Oona, and I

love her very much. I’m always keenu to enjoy cuddlesu with her

when I get home from work. Becoming a father has made me

feel and experience so many new and wonderful things.

As a dad myself now, I most of all†

feel responsible.1 I must earn2 enough

money to look after my wife and

daughter. I also need to make sure that both of them

are safe and happy. Another duty3 that I have is to

fight off Oona’s Taiwanese aunties occasionally.u They

often want to cover her in hats, socks, little jackets,

and blankets.4 However, Taipei’s weather in January

is as warm as a beautiful spring day in Scotland.

The problem with feeling all of this responsibility

is that I don’t always get to relax5 and enjoy being a

dad. Of course, that isn’t the point. Everything should

be about Oona, not about the things that I want.

Now that I am a father, I can really sympathizeu

with three children. I think he got things wrong

guitar is the act of pretending2 to hold a guitar and play

August 2010 marks the fifteenth year of the Air

NEAR the Taipei Train Station stands

an aged red brick building that is

filled with stories. Now, this historic

as the Museum of Contemporary Art,

Taipei (MOCA).

Since the opening of MOCA in 2001,

the museum has become a must-visit on

Taipei’s cultural3 map. MOCA has held

many performances and exhibitionsh in

different fields, including multimedia art,
