    * * *Batay sa kopya ng 112-pahi-

    * * *Ang sindikatong KORIYANO

HENRYLITO D. TACIOIN his essay The Power of Laugh-ter, Jose Javier Reyes asks: Is hu-mor for us, Filipinos, just a diver-sion? Or is it a survival kit?

Laughter is the way Filipinoscope, he argues. It has many uses:from leveler that exposes foi-bles of the mighty, a releasemechanism from tensions in cri-ses, to a tool to dodge taboos ... Weare a people that love to laugh,Reyes adds.

What do you use the PDA for,Domy? I asked.

Oh, Father, he smiled as heunlatched it from its cradle. Itsa simple and cheap Global Posi-tioning System (GPS) that helpsme navigate around the city. Youwant to see how it works?

ONCE upon a time, a motherand her son were lost in the for-est. They were trying to get outfrom the forest but the morethey tried the more they werelost. While walking, the littleboy stepped into a sharp twigand pierced his left foot. It wasgood that the wound was notthat bad. So, they continuedwalking.

That night, they found a cavewhere they slept. But in themiddle of the night, the boy wasshaking. He was having a fever. He must have infection as a re-sult of the wound, his motherthought. She hugged him butthe shivering continued.

The mother could no longerhold her tears. Is there some-one out there? she cried outlout. My son needs help. Itwas at this moment that shesaw the animals around her. What happened? the monkeyinquired.

The mother explained tothem what occurred. I need myson to be brought to the nearesthospital, she begged them.Otherwise, he will die soon.

Soon, thereafter, there was abig debate among the animals.Since they could not agree onwhich color of shirt the boywould wear, the lion declared,Fine with me. You can go aheadwith whatever you want butcount me out. Then the tigerfollowed and said, I have to gonow. You dont listen to myideas. The other animals like-

OH, yes, theres now a keen inter-est for what is authentic, for whatis real and genuine. Its the pen-dulum effect.

Weve been so bombarded withplastics, alloys, fakes, facades andmasks, copies and imitations, in-flated words and images, that ourhuman nature, no matter howweakened, now hungers for theoriginal, for the pure and simple.

I was amused, for example, tolearn that in the American Idolshow, theres a lot of weight givento whether a singer is able to in-terpret a song authentically, thatis, from the heart, whatever thatmeans.

There obviously are some ideasabout whats to be authentic, though its a definition that is pro-miscuously loose. It eludes clear-cut criteria. Its obviously not amatter of techniques, though theytoo are necessary.

Especially in singing, and in thearts in general, authenticity ismercurially subjective, highly vola-tile, flighty and capricious. Even ifone has the so-called X-factor, itmay just be true at one moment. But it expires faster than one canput an expiry date for the product.

Our drinking water is not any-more any ordinary tap water, know-ing that the latter can not betrusted anymore to be clean andpotable. We now go for purifiedwater.

This quest for authenticity nowextends to people. For all sorts ofreasons, we today prefer to be withpeople whom we consider to beauthentic. We want them to getreal.

Now, this is a very intriguingpoint, because we can have end-less ideas of what is to be an au-thentic person. For sure there aredifferent levels and aspects of au-thenticity and reality.

The young ones, notorious for thistendency, consider authenticitymainly as being true to themselves, and this usually means their feel-ings. They can be egotistically frank, brutally candid, allergic to anythingthat smacks of being plastic.

Thus, in their quest for authen-ticity, they crave for the original, for the creative and imaginative,no matter how outlandish and re-bellious to the status quo. This isevident in their shifting fads.

Ironically, they often fall for la-bels and brand names, mistakingwhat are costly and esotericallypopular among their group as be-ing true to themselves. But theyactually are capable of being radi-cal in this quest, able to transcendtheir adolescent ways, if they want.

All of us, perhaps without ar-ticulating it, do some abiding siz-ing up of others to see if they areauthentic as friends, colleagues, partners in certain projects, andultimately as persons. We oftenunconsciously submit them to ourown version of authenticity test.

We use all sorts of criteria, butin the end we cannot deny that thesource of all authenticity isshrouded in deep mystery.

We can try to be rational andexplicit about it, but we also knowthat in the end things depend ul-timately on our inexpressible be-liefs and on how we are consistentto them. This is a truly mysterious

part of our human condition. This preoccupation for authen-

ticity is most pronounced andmost difficult when we considerour leaders, especially the reli-gious ones. Here we are familiarwith the common biblical warn-ings about false prophets and falseteachers.

In this respect, we have to prayhard and constantly, so that we canhave authentic religious leaders.Though the authenticity test forthem may be most tricky, there canalways be some objective guide-lines and criteria.

Our religious leaders should betruly holy, fully identified withChrist in a vital and perpetuallyrenewing way. Of course, they haveto be grounded on correct doctrine, oozing with virtues, their mindsand hearts continually engaged ina relation of love with God.

This is a crucial element thatrequires Gods grace and an all-outascetical struggle. Its an all-or-nothing affair, though we can al-ways count on Gods infinite mercy.A false prophet fails in at least oneof these.

An authentic religious leader isable to blend truth and charity, jus-tice and mercy, freedom and obe-dience, compassion and discipline. The ultimate formula is their liv-ing contact with God.

Their signs of authenticity maynot be well known and openly dis-played. In fact, they are hiddenmost of the time. But when seen, they are unmistakable. And evenwhen not recognized, they have thepower to attract.

wise did the same.In the same vein, when

people are gathered togetherand discussed some issues, there is always a struggle be-tween the pros and cons. Oneidea is better than the other. Asa result, there is a debateamong them. Unity is out ofquestion.

We are more inclined tohate one another for points onwhich we differ, than to love oneanother for points on which weagree, observes Charles CalebColton. The reason perhaps isthis: when we find others thatagree with us, we seldom troubleourselves to confirm that agree-ment; but when we chance onthose who differ from us, we arezealous both to convince and toconvert them. Our pride is hurtby the failure, and disappointedpride engenders hatred.

An aged dying father calledhis seven sons around him. Hegave each one a stick and toldthem, Break it. Each son eas-ily broke his separate stick. Theold father then bound sevensticks into a bundle, gave it tohis eldest son and said, Breakit.

The eldest could not breakit, nor could any of the rest. So, said the father, it shouldbe with you. Alone you are weak. But when you and your broth-ers are together, then you arestrong. In union, so goes a say-ing, there is strength.

There is division amongpeople because of various rea-sons. One of these is opinion.Plato said, Between knowl-edge of what really exists andignorance of what does not ex-ist lies the domain of opinion. It is more obscure than knowl-edge, but clearer than igno-rance.

project. She told me that at onetime, a beneficiary of the projectwas already able to grow giantclams in a pond, using only theaquatic fern Azolla (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azolla) asfeeds. She surprised me evenmore when she said that my othercousin, her younger brother Atty.Gabriel Ninong Villareal is nowworking towards the goal of con-verting Wack Wack into a fullygreen golf course, in his capac-ity as President of that golf andcountry club. According toManang Fely, Ninong is alreadyrecycling kitchen waste, feedingit to earthworms, and is alreadyproducing honey from bees aswell.

Ka Iking Reports continued from page 3I learned that Ninongs projects in

Wack Wack are inspired by the writ-ings and experiences of Manong Dodoy.Putting together what Joseph has al-ready done in Mindoro , and whatNinong has done in Wack Wack, I amreally looking forward to a very fruit-ful project in Capiz.

The return of Manong Dodoysideas back to his own homeland isalready sentimental as it is, but Icould foresee that this is going tobe a sentimental journey for me (myparents are both from Capiz) butalso for Engineer Walther Alvarez, who also traces his roots to Capiz.

Walther is not yet well known inthe news circles, but for many yearsnow, he has attracted the attentionof the hog and poultry industry be-

cause of his invention that couldshorten the growing time of hogsfrom six months to four and a halfmonths, and the growing time ofpoultry from 45 days to 32 days. Asan added bonus, Walthers inven-tion enables farmers to make theirown feeds and fertilizers, usingfarm wastes and farm harvests asraw materials. I am very sure thatthis invention will benefit not onlythe people who live in the Capiz EcoForest now, but also all the otherfarmers in that province.

In a manner of speaking, Josephand Walther have already formedtheir own intercharity circles. Manyothers have contacted me, sharingthe good news that they have alsoformed their own circles. Liveli-

Regarding Henry continued from page 3Opinions, of course, come from

ideas. All great ideas are contro-versial, or have been at one time,George Seldes claimed. Man isready to die for an idea, providedthat idea is not quite clear to him,Paul Eldridge said.

The value of an idea has noth-ing whatsoever to do with the sin-cerity of the man who expresses it,Oscar Wilde pointed out. VictorHugo surmised: There is one thingstronger than all the armies in theworld: and that is an idea whosetime has come.

Put different people with differ-ent backgrounds to discuss a certainidea, and that idea will vanish intooblivion. F. Scott Fitzgerald re-minds us: No grand idea was everborn in a conference, but a lot offoolish ideas have died there.

Dale Carnegie confesses: Theideas I stand for are not mine. I bor-rowed them from Socrates. I swipedthem from Chesterfield. I stolethem from Jesus. And I put themin a book. If you dont like theirrules, whose would you use?

Ideas are ideas and they must beput into use. And these ideasshould bring goodwill to humanbeings. After all, we live not onlyfor ourselves but also for others.Peter DeVries said: We are not pri-marily put on this earth to seethrough one another, but to see oneanother through.

In the story I mentioned in thebeginning of this article, I am sureyou are disappointed with what theanimals have done. They shouldhave settled all their differences.Instead of focusing on what color ofshirt the little boy should wear, they should concentrate on the goalthat brought them together: to helpand bring the little boy to the near-est hospital.

Sure, each of the animals couldcontr ibute something to thecause. The lion and tiger, for in-stance, could provide the easiestand fastest possible route out ofthe forest. The elephants couldclear the path from obstacles. Thebirds could tell if there are somedangers and obstacles ahead

    (cliffs, rivers, and mountains,among others).

This brings us to the subject ofservice. I have been told that thereare three types of people who re-spond to the call of service. First, there are those rowboat people whohave to be pushed. Second are thosesailboat people who always go withthe wind. Lastly, there are thosewho are steamboat people whomake up their minds where theyought to go and go there regardlessof wind and weather. You have notdone enough, you have never doneenough, so long as it is still possiblethat you have something to contrib-ute, Nobel Peace Prize recipientDag Hammarksjold said.

Going back to the subject of unity,Edmund Burke wrote in Thoughtson the Cause of the Present Discon-tent: When bad men combine, thegood must associate; else they willfall, one by one, an unpitied sacri-fice in a contemptible struggle. How true, how true!

Forward to Basics continued from page 3Oh, nothing really, my cousin

shrugged his shoulders. The GPS willsimply reconfigure another route foryou from the point where you missedthe turn.

Wow! I exclaimed.Yup, he smiled proudly at his

PDA. Father, can you imagine if onlywe had a similar GPS to get toHeaven?

    * * *His last words remained in my

mind for some time. I thought thatsuch a geographical plotting devicewill only be possible in cities whosestreets and locations are well orga-nized. I guess it will take some timebefore something like this will be-come a reality in our own country.

In the spiritual life, we can alsospeak of something similar. There isactually a heavenly GPS or what wecan call Gods Plan of Salvation. Godalready had, from eternity, a plan onhow to save man. Out of love He took

on our nature in order to offer up aninfinite sacrifice of His life to His Fa-ther in order to atone for mans sins.

But this isnt all. He laid out for usa concrete path to follow so that theway to Heaven and communion withHis love can be easily attainable forthose who persevere in their love forGod. Did not our Lord say that He isthe Way, the Truth and the Life?Through His humanity His divineand inviting words and actions Heshowed us how we can be Gods chil-dren. He manifested this through Hisdown-to-earth parables, strengthen-ing miracles and heart-convertingsermons.

The apostles also experienced Hishumanity when they saw Jesus pray, suffer, work and heal. They also sharedHis tiredness, hunger and thirst to thepoint that Jesus life became and con-tinues to be a template for every manand womans path towards holiness.

    Moreover, He didnt simply

leave us alone. He promised to bewith us till the end of time. To doso, He plotted out for us in a morehistoric and palpable manner byfounding His Church through Hisapostles. It became a divine insti-tution composed of men, which be-came the principal channel for oursanctification. This is made pos-sible through the sacraments, espe-cially in Baptism, the Holy Eucha-rist and Reconciliation.

In this way, Gods plan of salvationfor every man is clearly demarcated. All that we have to do is commit our-selves to follow and live the way illu-mined by our Lords humanity byimmersing our lives in prayer, the sac-raments, following and serving theChurch from our own specific circum-stances. These become the clear roadsigns that lead us along a sure, speedyand secure way towards union withGod here on earth and if we are faith-ful, in Heaven.

Before this Court is the Petition for Correction of Entries in the LocalCivil Registrar of Pulilan, Bulacan filed on July 15, 2008 by hereinpetitioner, through counsel, praying that after due notice, publicationand hearing, an Order be issued directing the Local Civil Registrar ofPulilan, Bulacan to effect the necessary correction of the entries in the Certificate of Live Birth of Robie S. Mape from the surnameRevilla to the correct surname Mape; from the fathers name of RogerB. Revilla to the correct name Angel C. Mape; and that from the entryreflecting that petitioners parents were married on September 21,1985 to the correct entry Not Married, pursuant to Rule 108 of theRules of Court.

The petition alleged that the petitioners Robie S. Mape, Angel C.Mape and Ambrocia S. Mape, are all of legal ages, Filipinos andresidents of Paltao, Pulilan, Bulacan. The respondents are the CivilRegistrar of Pulilan, Bulacan and Roger B. Revilla who is likewise oflegal age, Filipino, marital status and whereabouts are unknown andbeing impleaded herein considering that his name was erroneously

written as Robie S. Mapes father was born on July 24, 1986 inPoblacion, Pulilan, Bulacan, (Annex A of the petition); that in thesaid Certificate of Live Birth, the name Roger B. Revilla was errone-ously written as the father the petitioner Robie, when in truth and infact, the latters father is petitioner Angel C. Mape, as evidenced bythe latters Affidavit of Acknowledgment dated May 20, 2008, (AnnexB of the petition); that likewise, petitioner Robies parents, namelyAngle C. Mape and Ambrocia S. Santos were not yet married at the time of petitioners birth; that petitioners parents were only marriedon April 29, 1990 as evidenced by their Certificate of Marriage,(Annex C of the petition); thus, the following entries in the petitionerRobies Certificate of Live Birth are erroneous and should thereforebe corrected accordingly to reflect the truth: a) the name of thepetitioner is erroneously entered as Robie Santos Revilla, instead ofhis true and correct name, Robie Santos Mape; b) the name of thefather to petitioner is erroneously entered as Roger B. Revilla, insteadof the true and correct name of his father as Angel C. Mape; c) theerroneous entry as to the marriage of petitioners parents, instead ofthe correct entry which is Not Married; that in all documents wherethe above entries are also stated, petitioner Robie has stated hiscorrect surname of Mape ad the correct full name of his father asAngel C. Mape, as evidenced by the following documents attached in

the petition: a. Certificate of Baptism, (Annex D of the petition); b.Certificate of Confirmation, (Annex E of the petition); c. VotersIdentification Card. (Annex F of the petition) d. Application forregistration, (Annex G of the petition); e. Students PermanentRecord, (Annex H of the petition); f. Community Tax Certificate(Annex I of the petition); g. Postal Identity Card, (Annex J of thepetition); and h. TIN I.D., (Annex K of the petition); that the errone-ous entries in the Certificate of Live Birth of petitioner Robie resultedby reason of the fact that at the time of his birth, petitioners grand-father, Jose Santos, did not want his daughter, petitioner Ambrocia, to give birth to an illegitimate child, hence, Jose Santos made itappear that Ambrocia was married to Roger B. Revilla and the later is the father of the petitioner Robie, when in the truth and in fact, thefather of the child was Angel C. Mape; that petitioner Ambrocia S.Mape was already pregnant of Robie when her then boyfriend, AngelC. Mape was assigned as a member of the Armed Forces of thePhilippines in Mindanao; thus, when Ambrocia C. Mape gave birth toRobie, her father, Jose Santos, made it appear that Ambrocia wasmarried to one Roger B. Revilla to avoid social embarrassment; thatsubsequently, petitioner Angel C. Mape returned and was able tomarry petitioner Ambrocia on April 29, 1990 as shown by their mar-riage contract, (Annex C) and that to avoid confusion and to put in

order the Certificate of Live Birth of Robie S. Mape, it is necessarythat the erroneous entries therein should be corrected in an adverseproceeding as required under the law.

Finding the said petition to be sufficient in form and substance, the Court sets the same for hearing on November 11, 2008 at 10:00oclock in the morning at which date and time, interested parties mayappear and show cause why the same should not be granted.

Let this order be published once a week for three (3) consecutiveweeks in a newspaper of general circulation in the province of Bulacanat the expense of the petitioner.

Send copies of this Order to the Local Civil Registrar of Pulilan,Bulacan, to the National Statistics Office, and to the Office of theSolicitor General as well as to the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor, who is directed to appear on behalf of the government.

    THE MUMMY 3

Cruz-Sto-Ro-sario-Mercado; San-Sebas-tian-San Nicolas; San Mi-guel-San Agustin-Sto. Ni-o; at Tampok-Sta. Monica.

The greatest strength of

DINO BALABO
