As a professional the demands you

make on us are clear. You need

products that enable you to select

the perfect coating build-up for any

task. This is what will make your

work successful, efficient, and

durable. Your requirements are a

challenge we take on gladly and

competently. Brillux paints and

primers combine excellent product

and processing quality with another

important feature – extraordinary

environmental compatibility.

The future begins again with

each new day

Our coatings research and develop-

ment department met the big envi-

ronmental compatibility and health

protection challenges long before

the VOC directive came into force.

Brillux was one of the first manu-

facturers to market aromatics-free

products. We are committed to

innovation. This is why we work

hard to continually develop environ-

mentally compatible products which

are practical at the same time.

Know-how is the mother of

invention

Obstacles are there to be overcome.

In 2010 the significant reduction of

VOC limits produced a difficult

obstacle for both users and manu-

facturers. How can you obtain com-

fortable processing and excellent

finishes with products which must

have a much lower solvent concen-

tration? Many years of Brillux

research and development provide

the right answer, offering you a full

range of top-quality products.

Brillux gives you practice-tested

water-based and VOC-compliant

solvent-based systems. Both vari-

ants convince customers with the

processing comfort and high finish

quality they provide.

Solvent- or water-based –

it’s up to you

Having freedom of choice is great:

With Brillux paints and primers,

freedom of choice is a matter of

course. At Brillux you will find the

right product for any application,

whether solvent-based coatings or

water-based products. They provide

our typical professional quality with

maximum environmental compati-

bility, enabling solutions for brilliant

finish results without compromise.

Covering the highest demands perfectly – with solvent-based paints

Quality without compromise – that’s

our philosophy. Our aromatics-free

alkyd resin-based professional

products have been among the

best-performing paints on the mar-

ket for years. This is why we suc-

cessfully take on the challenge to

continue to provide our customers

with high-quality aromatics-free

products meeting all the require-

ments of the VOC Directive.

The first choice: aromatics-free

products

Isoparaffin instead of white spirit.

This is the recipe for the success of

our aromatics-free alkyd resin-

based paints and primers. Our aro-

matics-free products distinguish

themselves by their excellent appli-

cation and product properties while

reducing annoying smell by a factor

of 60. In addition isoparaffin solvent

is much healthier and environmen-

tally-compatible than white spirit.

Safety guaranteed – for both

adults and children

Our products not only provide a

high-end living and working envi-

ronment – we also ensure that your

future customers can play safely

today. Our aromatics-free and

water-based Brillux products com-

ply with the so-called “Toy Direc-

tive” EN 71-3. This means that

these products are saliva and

sweatproof and are therefore suit-

able for coating children’s toys.

The solvent vapor concentration of non-ventilated interior room coatings isimpressively low if the aromatics-freesolvent isoparaffin is used. TRGS 901permits much higher MAK values.

Water-based paints

Our ambitions are high. This is why

we have invested a lot of time in

developing water-based coatings.

The result: Our full range of paints,

varnishes and primers meet the

highest professional requirements

and provide maximum health com-

patibility at the same time.

The Blue Angel eco label for

Brillux Lacryl

Sophisticated interior color design is

one thing. Healthy living is another.

Our water-based Lacryl products

meet all the requirements of the

German Blue Angel eco label, thus

guaranteeing optimum health com-

patibility and consistent environ-

mental protection.

Quality – adjusted to the

processing method

Whenever premium results are

required the coating material and

the processing method must be

adjusted to one another perfectly.

Spray application requires different

product properties than processing

by roller or paintbrush. This applies

particularly to viscosity and durabili-

ty. It’s why Brillux has always taken

the relevant processing parameters

into account when developing

water-based paints. The result:

unrivalled high-tech coatings.

What makes a good coating? As an

expert you will already recognize

during application if the finish is

uniform and will withstand mechan-

ical strain. Really good work quality,

however, can also be seen much

later when the finish is still in good

condition, free from color changes

and chipping. Durable quality

depends on the right coating build-

up perfectly adjusted to the relevant

substrate.

Proper coating build-up, including

primer, intermediate and topcoat, is

among the greatest challenges of

the trade. This is due to the fact

that there is a vast range of differ-

ent substrates. You have to work

with different types of wood, as well

as with plastic, iron, steel, alumini-

um, copper and mineral substrates.

The ambient conditions are also

very different. Choosing the right

coating depends on whether it will

be inside or outside – which in-

cludes weather exposure – whether

it will be in bright sun or in shade,

and whether it will be exposed to

mechanical strain or only serve

decorative purposes. Only the care-

ful consideration of the combination

of all of these factors will result in a

specific requirement profile.

That’s what matters!

On the following pages you will

learn how you can complete any job

perfectly using the complete range

of Brillux paints and primers.

Metallic substrates

Metal is a versatile, high-strength

material which is used in many

different ways in building construc-

tion. However, despite the excellent

static properties of metal compo-

nents/structures only durable pro-

tection against corrosion guaran-

tees maximum value maintenance

and service life.

The most important differences

between iron and non-iron metals

Metals are categorized primarily

in two groups, i.e. iron metals

(I-metals) and non-iron metals

(NI-metals). Both groups require a

different coating approach. Coatings

for iron metal surfaces mainly

require permanent corrosion pro-

tection. On the other hand, NI-metal

surfaces, e.g. zinc, aluminium and

copper, make high demands on

the adhesive capacity of coating

materials.

Problematic factory coats

In many cases metal substrates

provided with factory paint coats or

coil coating prove to be rather

tricky. In these cases the typical

substrate inspection methods such

as a scraping test and cross-cutting

might suggest good adhesive data

at first. However, after the coating

work is completed chipping may

still occur. For this reason the new

coat must always be adjusted to

the existing old coat.

A tip for professional substrate

inspections

Identify if the surface is made

of iron or non-iron metal:

– Magnet test: Pig iron and

crude steel are magnetic

as well as are galvanized

I-metals.

– Are there visible zinc flowers

on the surface? These are a

sign of zinc-coated metal.

On zinc dust coats, a copper

coin will leave black lines

when rubbed on the surface

for awhile.

 Check crude metals for pro-

cessing residues, soiling or

corrosion.

Grease and oil can be identi-

fied by a wetting test using

water or placing absorbent

paper on the surface

 Check the bearing capacity of

primer or existing coats by

means of a scratch test and

cross-cutting, plus an adhesive

tape test if necessary.

No I-metal coat without corrosion

protection

I-metals must be provided with cor-

rosion protection – otherwise the

material will oxidize within a very

short time and lose its stability. Any

reliable, durable and high-quality

corrosion protection begins with

careful preparation of the substrate.

Iron and steel also require a non-

permeable coating system which

consistently protects the material

against exterior impact such as

moisture, oxygen, salts and acids.

I-metals

Careful preparation prolongs

service life

In a thorough preparation step,

rolling skin, scale and welding

residues must be removed before

coating work begins. Rust can be

sanded or brushed off. Sandblasting

is the ideal pretreatment method.

Assessment of corrosion development(Salt spray test according to DIN 53167 / ISO 4628)

Keep the coating impermeable

The criteria to be met for imper-

meable coating are described in

DIN EN ISO 12944: According to

this standard, the minimum dry

film thickness depends on:

 the corrosiveness category

 the desired protection duration

 the primer bonding agent

Brillux Multi Primer 227 meets

these requirements perfectly: It is

particularly efficient as a thick-

film product. A dry-film thickness

of 80 μm is obtained in just one

work cycle (airless). In addition

Brillux Multi Primer 227 contains

special rust passivating corrosion

protection pigments, resulting in a

particularly reliable corrosion pro-

tection effect.

13

NI-metals

Zinc and zinc-coated metals

need perfect adhesion

Zinc coats perfectly protect steel

and iron against corrosion. How-

ever, zinc coats are quickly attacked

by aggressive air pollutants and

for this reason must be coated

properly. The most important quality

criterion in this context is a perfect

compound adhesion to the zinc

surface. The quality of adhesion is

largely influenced by the type of

bonding agent used, e.g. mixed

polymer resin. Do not use alkyd

resin-based universal primers.

These primers embrittle early and

loose adhesion if, for example, fatty

acids or other cleavage products of

the bonding agent react with the

zinc surface either directly or

through permeable primer coats.

We recommend using mixed poly-

mer resin-based products such as

Multi Primer 227. They guarantee

minimum embrittlement and thus

offer maximum long-term protection.

Quality begins with cleaning

It is important that you clean the

zinc surface thoroughly before

starting to coat it. That’s why you

must remove all corrosion products

and oil and fat which are often

applied by zinc coaters as a pro -

tective layer. Zinc surfaces should

always be cleaned using thinned

ammonia and wetting agent or Uni

Cleaner 1032. We recommend using

our Burnishing Pad 1189 to polish

the surface slightly .

Take care, old coats might

chip off!

If galvanized iron parts are covered

with an old coat, check its adhesion

properties carefully. Old coats with

low adhesion are likely to chip off.

Scraping tests and cross cutting

must always be carried out to

obtain the best results.

Resistance capacity of aluminium

and copper

Aluminum is used in many different

ways – for facade paneling as well

as for profiles and fittings for win-

dows, doors, shutters and facades

or as a cover. In addition, aluminum

is also used as a structural element

performing static functions. On the

other hand copper, with its particu-

larly decorative effect, is mostly

used for downpipes, gutters and

paneling.

If aluminum and copper are to

appear natural

Colorless treatment of aluminum

and copper is problematic. How -

ever, if aluminum and copper are

to be provided with a covering coat,

the same build-up recommenda-

tions apply as with zinc. Perfect

compound adhesion to the sub-

strate is obtained with a primer

using 2-c Epoxy Primer 855,

2-c Aqua Epoxy Primer 873 or

Multi Primer 227.

Use of unsuitable primer

Wood: No other material is more

versatile and more natural. How -

ever, as a natural material wood is

highly demanding and requires

protection – especially in exterior

applications – against sunlight,

moisture and temperature changes.

Selective wood protection

While the choice of an interior

primer is relatively uncritical, spe-

cific wood protection is especially

important in exterior applications.

Chemical wood protection should

generally be selective. This means

wood should only be protected if

this is required due to the type of

wood used and the object situation.

Wood protection with RAL

quality seal

In many cases, impregnation is

required in exterior applications as

protection against blue stain and

decay – in the case of untreated

coniferous wood, for example.

Chemical protection should be

effective exactly at the place where

the infestation might occur: deep

inside the wood. For this reason the

impregnation used must have a

high penetration capacity. This

requirement is perfectly met by

Impredur Wood Impregnating Primer

550 because it penetrates deeply

into the pores of the wood. Its

effectiveness has been documented

by the recognized RAL test institute

and certified by the RAL Quality

Seal. Impredur Wood Impregnating

Primer 550 is perfect for protecting

non-earth contacted exterior wood

not exposed to static load – as well

as for windows and exterior doors –

against decay and blue stain.

Wood and wood-based materials

Protection against color changes

caused by constituents

When it comes to using water-

based coatings and primers, various

aspects must be carefully consid-

ered. On the one hand, they offer

excellent anti-yellowing stability, on

the other hand color changes may

occur in the case of white and light

color shades on wood rich in con-

stituents such as pine. The problem

is that wood constituents are dis-

solved by contact with aqueous

products and may result in stains.

Our solution: An isolating alkyd resin

primer layer – Impredur Primer 835

– solves the problem.

Wood without and with blue stain infestation

Good isolation –uniformly white surface

Poor isolation –Wood constituents shine through

Optimum UV protection in interior

applications

UV radiation has negative effects in

both interior and exterior applica-

tions. Unwanted color changes can

be seen when shifting furniture, for

example. With its innovative UV

absorbers for interior applications

Brillux has developed a technology

which largely prevents the darken-

ing and yellowing of wood. The

clear varnishes Lacryl-PU Wood

Sealer 262 and 264 are provided

with UV absorbers and are most

effective if applied on previously

untreated surfaces, as in this case

the original color can still be main-

tained. In exterior applications clear

varnishes as well as colorless var-

nishes generally don’t provide suffi-

cient UV protection due to constant

weather exposure.

Requiring protection: wooden

components/structures and their

different degrees of dimensional

accuracy

Choosing the right wood coating

also depends on the criterion of

dimensional accuracy. Dimensional

accuracy defines how much the

dimensions of a wooden compo-

nent/structure may change by

shrinking and swelling. The follow-

ing categories are used: compo-

nents/structures without dimension-

al accuracy, components/structures

with limited dimensional accuracy,

and dimensionally accurate compo-

nents/structures. Each of these cat-

egories requires a specific coating

build-up.

A tip for professional substrate

inspections

Are there signs of decay or

insect infestation? Any dam-

aged wood-based materials

must be replaced.

 Before coating in exterior

applications, determine the

moisture content using the

Brillux Moisture Meter 3420.

For example, moisture must

not exceed 15 % in the case of

coniferous wood and 12 % in

the case of deciduous wood.

Dimensionally accurate wooden

components/structures may

change their dimensions only within

a very small tolerance range. Exam-

ples of such components/structures

are windows, exterior doors and

accurately mortised (glued) window

and door shutters.

Components/structures without

dimensional accuracy are not lim-

ited as regards volumetric changes,

e.g. exterior paneling with open

joints, weather boarding on lath

grids, overlapping paneling, shin-

gles, palisades, wooden grids, and

fences.

Wood components/structures

with limited dimensional accu -

racy allow changes to a limited

extent. This applies, for example, to

tongue and groove paneling, garden

furniture, half-timbering, roof under-

sides and cornices as well as exte-

rior doors, window and door shut-

ters unless these components are

not already categorized in the

dimensionally accurate group.

 Check the bearing capacity

of old coats by means of a

scratch test, cross-cutting

and adhesive tape test.

Page 16: Meeting the highest demands:

16

Hard PVC

Adhesion matters most

Hard PVC is used for many window

and door frames, but also for facade

and balcony paneling. This material

does not have to be coated, but

coating may be desirable in order to

obtain a different color design or to

make structures worn out by

weather exposure more attractive.

In any case ensure that the chosen

painting system is expressly suit-

able for use on plastic. In plastic

manufacturing, mold release agents

such as silicones or waxes are

widely used. These materials,

however, make subsequent coating

difficult. For particularly durable

primer coating of hard PVC, we

recommend 2-c Epoxy Primer 855,

2-c Aqua Epoxy Primer 873 or Multi

Primer 227, as the bonding agents

of these products are specially

adjusted to plastic.

A tip for professional substrate

inspections

 Are the components/structures

dirty? Clean carefully, if neces-

sary.

 Grease, oil and mold release

agents can be identified by a

wetting test using water.

Remove fatty soiling using

thinned ammonia and wetting

agent or Uni Cleaner 1032.

For slight surface polishing,

we recommend using our

Burnishing Pad 1189.

Check the surface by hand for

weathering residues. Polish the

surface if necessary and clean

it using a moist cloth.

 Check the bearing capacity of

old coats by carrying out a

scratch test, cross-cutting and

adhesive tape test, if indicated.

Remove paint coat, if needed.

BX02518_Lack-Brosch_GB.qxp:Brillux-Grundlinienraster 06.01.2011 12:40 Uhr Seite 16

Page 17: Meeting the highest demands:

17

Inspection of the substrate before

coating is required to identify the

type of existing coat. Some old dis-

persion paint coats may be critical.

If such coats are touched up using

water-based products there might

be interactions, depending on the

bonding agent formulation of the

old dispersion paint coat. Incompat-

ibility manifests itself in premature

drying and poor flow of the new

paint coat, which reduces the finish

quality significantly, whether the

tool/processing instructions were

complied with or not. Taking the fol-

lowing measures you can prevent

problems in any situation.

Processing water-based paint

requires particularly careful inspec-

tion and preparation of the sub-

strate. Due to their relatively low

solids content, water-based paints

generally cannot compensate for

substrate roughness as well as

solvent-based alkyd resin paints.

Old coats

A tip for professional substrate

inspections

 Check the bearing capacity of

the old coat by carrying out a

scratch test, cross-cutting and

adhesive tape test.

 Identify the type of coating

using a cellulose thinner. If the

existing coating dissolves

significantly, it is a physically

drying system, e.g. a polymer

resin or dispersion coating;

if it does not dissolve or if it

only dissolves to an insignifi-

cant extent, this is a sign of a

chemically hardening system,

e.g. based on alkyd resin paint.

 Grease, oil and mold release

agents can be identified by

a wetting test using water.

Remove any grease, oil and

mold release agents using

Uni Cleaner 103 and sand

the surface.

Brillux Color System: the freedom of limitless color design

With Brillux Scala you can solve any

color design task effectively and be

technically efficient and true to style

at the same time. Our sophisticated

Brillux Color System provides the

technical basis for individual color

mixing. Virtually any shade can be

mixed in the desired product quality

in just a few minutes, including

shades from a sample, whether

aromatics-free, mild-odor paints,

emission- and solvent-free disper-

sions or an environmentally com-

patible Lacryl product. Solvent-free

and water-based coating materials

are mixed using specially developed

Aquatec tinting concentrates which

are solvent-free as well. In this way

these products will remain solvent-

free even after mixing – environ-

mental protection which will con-

vince even the most demanding

customers.

Aromatics-free, mild-odor Brillux

paints are mixed using the paint-in-

paint method with aromatics-free,

VOC 2010 compliant paint concen-

trates. This is a small technical dif-

ference with a great effect for daily

practice, ensuring that the excellent

advantages of the Brillux coating

materials are maintained even after

tinting.

The most important features

of the Brillux Color System

 Shade identification: 100 percent

reproducibility using state-of-the-art

mixing and tinting paste technology

 Product quality: maintains excellent

product and processing properties

 Environmental protection: Emis-

sion- and solvent-free products

Brillux Basecode System:Our products fit your needs

Each of the samples above shows a

critical color – without a Basecode

coat on the left and with a Base-

code coat on the right. The Base-

code color which corresponds to the

selected color ensures optimum

covering capacity and a genuine

final color.

The problem: Pigments with insuffi-

cient covering capacity makes

proper coating difficult in the case

of brilliant colors, especially in the

yellow, orange, red and magenta

ranges.

The solution: The Basecode System

is an innovative result of Brillux

research and development. The

principle is simple. A covering first

coat in a Basecode color ensures

that two additional coats of the

final color will be enough to obtain

an optimum covering capacity.

The result is a uniform surface

appearance which for technical

reasons was not possible before.

The advantages of the Basecode

System:

 excellent covering capacity with

critical colors

 optimum quality of primer coats

as regards adhesion, curing and

polishability

 use of economical Basecode

colors for first coat

 reduced number of work cycles

and less material input

 quick, reliable identification of

Basecode shade

Brillux Scala: systematic color design

Brillux Scala offers a range of 1,514

carefully selected color shades

based on practical considerations.

Color ranges only used to a limited

extent in design practice were

intentionally reduced. Important

color areas such as blue, yellow

and orange as well as gray, white

and pastel shades are combined

into Scala color families which have

not been available to this extent

until now.

Reliable design

Color representation is based on

colorimetric standards. These stan-

dards have been modified for visual

perception. Thus the Scala color

space is uniformly developed

through all spectral ranges. This

makes design particularly easy and

reliable.

Easy, practical application

All pigmented Brillux system prod-

ucts are consistently encoded

according to Brillux Scala, which

ensures that almost any product is

available in each color shade.

Scala tools for efficient color

design

Complex design tasks or plain

objects – Scala provides the right

tools for any application. Many

sophisticated details make han-

dling, consulting and color design

easier.

For example: the Varnish Color

Shades chart

This color chart features a selection

of 247 high-gloss Brillux Scala

paint shades (including RAL Classic

shades), focusing on stronger

nuances. It also contains primer

colors and decorative metallics to

complement your design options.

An encoding table for converting

RAL Classic to Brillux Scala as well

as a clear organization into color

families ensure comfortable and

easy handling.
