PRESIDENTPRESIDENTPRESIDENTPRESIDENTPRESIDENT’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORT

Greg Bryant SC480

As President of the club, I feel duty bound to let you all know my feelings with regard to anuneasiness that has crept into the club’s activities over the last few months – hopefully to putthe issue to rest for once and for all.

I have read closely the club’s Constitution and the General Information booklet as a meansof assisting me in understanding what has been happening. Maybe it’s time to remind everyoneof the Objects of the Club (as stated in Section 2 of the Constitution):

2. OBJECTSThe objects for which the Association is established are:

a) To publicise the Association and increase membership, catering for all ages.b) To improve general interest and enthusiasm in Subaru Four Wheel Drive (4WD)

Vehicles.c) To organise meetings and outings of a social and competitive nature.d) To encourage responsible and skilful use of the vehicle in all situations.e) To obtain discounts on parts and accessories to members.f) To promote fellowship and liaise with other 4WD Clubs to improve the image of 4WD

generally.

The trip that was held on October 8 fulfilled every one of the club’s objects. The touringsection of the trip may have been discriminatory, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that thetrip should not have been run as a club trip. I also don’t consider it to have set a precedent– by their very nature other trips that the club has run have also been discriminatory. Examplesinclude promotional meets (“Show & Shine” and similar meets) that the club has attendedas a means of advertising the club and attracting new members, at which only Subarus havebeen displayed representing the club; a Ladies’ Day; and in fact any 4WD trip with a ratingof hard or extreme, for which the trip leader would actively discourage an inexperiencedmember with an inappropriately set up vehicle from attending (and rightly so).

Club meetings are held as a forum for informing the members of what has been and will behappening in the club, and sometimes for lively and healthy discussion on a range of topicsthat are of interest to the members. However, over the last few months a degree of animosityhas been exhibited within the club, which has upset a number of the members and which Ifeel may be damaging morale within the club.

So lets all get on with promoting the objects of the club, which in turn will make our clubstronger and healthier and more enjoyable for all.

v First we survived being born to mothers who smoked and /or drank whilethey carried us.

v They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, sardines from a can, anddidn’t get tested for diabetes.

v Then after the trauma, our babies cribs were covered with bright colouredlead-based paints.

v We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, door or cabinets and whenwe rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risk we tookhitchhiking.

v As children, we would ride in cars with no seatbelts or airbags.v Riding in the back of a Ute on a hot day was always a special treat.v We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.v We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE

actually died from this.v We ate patty cakes, white bread and real butter and drank softdrink with

sugar in it, but we weren’t overweight because WE WERE ALWAYSOUTSIDE PLAYING.

v We would leave home in the morning and play all day. as long as we wereback when the streetlights came on.

v No one was able to reach us all day. And we were ok.v We would spend hours building our billycarts of scraps and then ride

down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into thebushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

v We did not have Playstations, Nintendo’s, X-Boxes, no video games atall, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound,no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chatrooms......WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

v We fell out of the trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were nolawsuits from these accidents.

v We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not livein us forever.

v We were given bb guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticksand tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did notput out very many eyes.

v We rode bikes or walked to a friends house and knocked on the door orrang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

v Football and softball clubs had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!!

v The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.They actually sided with the law!!

v The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.v We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW

TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!!!

And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow upas kids, before the solicitors and the government regulated our lives for ourown good and while you are at it, forward it to others with kids so they willknow how brave their parents were.Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn’tit?!!!!!!!

Part two.The inside of the hull and radio tray were painted. The speed controller andservos were fitted to the radio tray and mountings were made for the radiocontrol receiver and receiver battery. A tray and mounts were made for thedrive battery. The outside of the hull was sanded and given 2 coats of greypaint, more work will need to be done to the top of the hull after the deck isinstalled. The motor and battery wiring was installed and connected.

The first test float was carried out in the pool to check the balance of theboat. A 6 volt drive battery was tried first, but it was a bit slow, so a 12 voltbattery was fitted and the boat went a lot faster, in fact to fast for the size ofour pool. The position of the 12 volt battery was too far forward, the bow wassitting to low in the water and the propeller was cavitating. The battery wasmoved to just behind the motor and this provided good balance of the hulland stopped the cavitation. A battery carrier was made and fitted to thehull. I took the hull down to the model boating lake at Boondall EntertainmentCentre and gave it a run. The hull handled well and sat up and planed atspeed. I noticed when turning the hull at speed, water sprayed up into theair and entered the open hull. Water was also forced up the rudder shaft. When finished with a water tight deck and fittings water spray will not be aproblem and some grease on the rudder shaft will fix that leak.

The deck was made from gluing 3 pieces of 100mm wide balsa together andthen cutting the shape of the deck out of the wide balsa sheet. I borrowed aplan of a British patrol boat from the SSS model boat club library, which I ama member of and started building the superstructure. First I built the cabinand bridge and then the other components like the Carley floats, deckhatches, masts and armament. The main rear gun and small side guns

are static but the main front gun will move from side to side and spray water.

Navigation lights were fitted to the cabin and wired to a 2 x 1.5 volt AAbattery holder. The cabin, deck hatches and guns etc, were painted. I founda model rubber ducky in Wade’s toy box, it was the right scale for the patrolboat, so I have painted it and fitted on top of the main hatch. The main mastis made of brass and will act as the aerial for the radio control receiver.

Next month in part three, will be fitting of the water pump and depth chargers.Fitting the deck to the hull and a final coat of paint.

Interestrate was 5.1%. This has been changed to 1.5%, in addition there are now fees attached to theaccount. Ray will look into options through other banking institutions, to find out if funds could attracta better interest rate elsewhere.Treasurer’s Report Accepted:Moved Ray Lyons, seconded John McKennaSocial Director’s ReportOct 8 5th Annual BYB BBQOct 24 WRX Experience3 people have registered to go on the WRX Experience trip. If 10 people go then the Club can get adiscount.

Ron opened a discussion about the BYB BBQ trip by asking why non Subaru vehicles were beingexcluded from the trip, as this a Club trip advertised in the Club magazine and excluding vehicles wasnot Club policy. Greg explained that this point had been brought up at the last Committee Meeting, had generated a great deal of discussion and that there was nothing in the Club rules that said thatthe Club couldn’t run a Subaru only trip. The trip is one the BYB have organized and run annually forthe past 4 years. It is an opportunity to gather as many Subarus as possible together on one trip. TheBYB Cruise part of the trip ends at Woodford for a BBQ and non Subaru drivers who want to bringtheir own vehicle are more than welcome to join the group there. Also if there are Club members, whodon’t own a Subaru, but want to come on the main part of the trip, they could always get a lift with aSubaru driver.Having the trip run as part of the Subaru 4WD Club had benefits to both groups. BYB is an informalgroup and as such do not have insurance. By having the Subaru 4WD Club involved, participants areable to take out temporary membership and be covered by the Club’s insurance. The Club benefitsas there is expected to be 40 vehicles involved that are owned by non Club members. It offers theClub a great opportunity to promote the Club and increase membership.Concern was expressed that the trip set a precedent which may be repeated. Megan Rogers pointedout that this is a once a year event run by the BYB, who have invited the Club to participate and thatthe trip would go ahead with or without the Club’s participation, though members would be welcometo join in if they chose.A proposal was put to members present, as to whether the trip should be considered a Club event asper the magazine. Yes votes 20, No votes 5. Motion was carried.

Fourby’s have asked the club if they could organise 3 or 4 late model Subarus tobe parked infront of the Fourby’s shop for a photo for the advert. David will sort out getting suitablevehicles together for photo.Editor’s Report: Grant inquired who was responsible for chasing up fees for private advertisementsplaced in the Club magazine. He had also received a request for a private advertisement to beincluded in the magazine. It consisted of lengthy email with photos attached and that for practicalreasons it was not possible to place it in the magazine. Greg suggested that larger adverts such asthat, could be included on the website at no cost. Grant had a discussion with Greg regarding problemswith the formatting of the Meeting Minutes. He also reported that Australia Post still hasn’t organized the Club’s account for invoicing of postagefor the Club magazine. Webmaster’s Report: Greg provided a summary of the website usage for the month of August.3561 visits, 88401 hits. Discussion groups had been busy with 11 Technical discussion topics, 13items posted to the Buying and Selling section and 2 non Subaru discussion topics.Subaclub email addresses were still available. There were a few technical problems getting themagazine onto the website this month, but these have now been sorted out. There is plenty of spaceon the website for photos etc.Training Officer’s Report:NoneQCCHVC Delegate’s Report:NonePresident’s Report: Greg drew attention to the President’s Report in the Club magazine. TheCommittee is looking into formalising a driver 4WD training program for members. It is a significantassignment and Greg asked that if any members wanted to be involved to contact himself or JohnMcKenna. A discussion took place and it was suggested that it would be useful if a copy of theNational 4WD Association’s training program could be obtained as a guide. Ray pointed out thatNational Training Authority might need to formalise the program, in which case the training programwould have to conform to National standards. The website ntis.gov.au, lists a range of nationallyaccredited training courses that can be downloaded. Club members Will Spelta and Ron Penfold areboth accredited with Certificate 4 in Training. It is likely that a sub committee will be appointed tooversee this issue.General Business: Greg brought to the meeting’s attention that there is a 1988 Vortex for sale.Trip reports –Don Watt gave a report of a 3 week trip he and partner Maureen did to Cape York in July. HEARD THE NEWSHEARD THE NEWSHEARD THE NEWSHEARD THE NEWSHEARD THE NEWSNew partnership– Early this month General Motors [GM] agreed to dissolve its20% strategic alliance relationship it had with Fuji Heavy Industries [FHI] Subaru’sparent company. This partner ship started in 1999, with Saab benefiting the mostsharing an Impressa WRX wagon, badged as Saab in the US. Also the new 7 seatTribeca was to become a Saab model, but that has now been stopped. Toyota isthe new partner, buying 8.7%, 11.4 % will be sold on open market, and FHI willbuy the remaining percentage. The new partnership plans to share technicalinformation. In the US GM have been loosing sales to its Japanese competitors;its past yearly losses are in the billions. To reduce costs the company is in theprocess of reducing its workforce by 25,000. Its biggest parts supplier DelphiCorp, which it has close ties with, has recently been placed into receivership.

Transplants – With Subaru’s renowned interchange ability between the models, for instances an early 1970’s model L starter motor will bolt straight on to acurrent model. Also the 2 bottom bolt spacings on an early model gearbox arethe same the current models. The same applies to engine mounts, so engineswaps between the models are quite easy. Recently a few Club Members havebeen busy transplanting engines, Grant and Kim Rogers have fitted a 2 litre turboengine to their 92 Liberty wagon, while Brett and Megan Rogers have fitted a 2.5litre turbo engine to their 95 Liberty wagon. Leon Pepene has also been busybuilding up a Brumby fitted with a 2.2 litre Liberty engine.

Updating — On the updating front Beccy Peters, Keith and Danna Peters daughterhas found and bought from Sydney a rare special edition auto 01 2 litre Libertysedan, fitted with a full leather interior, spoiler and skirt kit, and big 17 inchrims. Meanwhile Gil Thorncraft is very happy with his 02 Forester X after havingthe extra low range fitted. David Martin has bought a Rhino buggy fitted with allMY series running gear. It was built in 2001 to road registered specs, its registeredname is a GHE Stacker. Greg [Curlie] has fitted a rear tyre carrier to his L89wagon that he bought from Country Member Darren Woods. It was built to fit aMY wagon, so he had to do some mods to fit it to his wagon.

Top safety rating – The new 06 Forester now fitted with standard front dual andside air bags has recently received the highest 5 star safety rating. It was theonly model of 10 compact and large 4WD’s tested to receive the 5 star rating. The test was conducted by ANCAP[ Australian New Car Assessment Program].
