English Day

We have English Day every Tuesday. We

create an English rich environment and

encourage students to speak English. We use

different themes in our activities such as

commitment, Guangdong-Hong Kong Macao

Greater Bay Area and The Belt and Road

Initiative, integrity and STEM to increase

interest and usage. Our native English teachers help promote

English Day activities during the recess and

lunch break with our students. They also

help to provide various topics through the

campus TV. Our students do not only join the activities on the English Day,

some of them are English ambassadors and helping teachers hold game booths or

other activities too.

A big Halloween tent was set up in the

playground where students could play

games and use English to earn treats.

On English Day, our English

ambassadors are committed to

introducing games and helping

in game booths.

Integrating Science, Technology Engineering

and Mathematics (STEM) into our activities.

Students participate in an activity using

magnets.

English Activities in the 1st term Kids4Kids My Story Creation Workshop

About 20 students joined the workshop where Instructors from Kids4Kids guided students to turn their imagination into a story and then built the story in words and pictures.

UBS Hong Kong Rugby Spirit

Our school joined the Rugby English Active Learning Programme organised by Hong Kong Rugby Union and Standing Committee on Language Education and Research. Students from 5A and 5B were selected to join the programme which offered them the chance to learn the basic rules and regulations of TRY Rugby. This programme also aimed at developing students’ interest in reading stories or information texts on sports in English.

UBS Mega Art Project

Our children were extremely excited to take part in this Mega Art Project. They were proud to be team members and break the record for the largest colouring book and becoming GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS holders.

Students are using storyboarding technique to start planning their own stories.

STC English Fun Day

Some students from P6 joined the English Fun Day organised by Shung Tak Catholic English College (STCEC). Students experienced school life in an EMI secondary school. They took part in group activities led by secondary students in STCEC and enjoyed a day in an English rich environment.

English Programme by Hope Worldwide

Hope Worldwide launched a 4-sessioin English programme in which students learnt English through playing games and completing group tasks. The last session of the programme was a trip to Sheung Wan. Students had the chance to visit some famous tourists spots in this old but fascinating district and practise interviewing skills through talking to foreigners.

What is Dim Sum? By Samuel Brotherwood

I have lived in Hong Kong for almost six years so I like to think I have some idea what Dim Sum is now. But what is Dim Sum like to someone who has never been here before? Breakfast? No. Lunch? Not really? Sweet? Some. Savoury? Some. Confused? Probably!

A History in the Tea?

Let’s start with the tea. There are lots of teas, as you know, but my favourite is Jasmine(香片)

because it tastes almost fruity though sometimes I will have Bolay (普洱) because of the mild taste yet rich colour.

I understand it is polite to tap two fingers on the table when someone pours tea. I heard this was because once upon a time, an emperor liked to see go around new places in China in normal clothes so the people saw him as a normal person. His servants could not tell anyone who he was so they would use their fingers to show respect to their emperor instead of bowing. This became a symbol of respect. Wow! Even just drinking tea is interesting!

So much food!

Dim Sum comes in small dishes so you can choose many and eat lots of different things. Some of the teachers’ have told me Chinese people like many choices so Dim Sum is perfect. I love food so Dim Sum, again, is perfect.

In England we don’t really mix tastes. Something sweet is usually for after a meal and never during a meal so this was a new experience for me. Custard Buns and then Curried Squid (咖哩蒸魷魚)? Amazing!

Where to go?

I have two favourite restaurants. The first is near the school in Lau Fau Shan behind all the fish restaurants. It gets busy after 11:30am. They do a great Law My Gai where they fry an egg on top of the sticky rice. Delicious! And the Custard Buns are pretty good too. It is close to where I live so it is a place I go to often.

The second restaurant is on Tai Mo Shan in a village called Cheun Long. The restaurant here is very old. The food is prepared fresh and then you help yourself. The waiters count your dishes when you have finished so you can pay. This place is amazing because it is in the trees so the views are amazing. Even the tea is special as the water they use is fresh from the mountain. It’s supposed to be really healthy and clean.

What is it then?

So what is Dim Sum to someone who doesn’t know? Dim Sum is historical. It is different. It is for family and friends. It is for relaxing. It is cheap (though it can be expensive). It is real food and some say (me) it might even be the best food in the world!

Bon appetite…or I should say, ‘Sihk faahn!’
