It is almost a year since we last heard about the plan to totally ban smoking inside Macau casinos. Now, the members of the Legislative Assembly have casted their respective votes just as the month of May is about to end—smoking lounges will be kept instead of pushing for a total smoking ban.

A sub-committee comprised of members of the Legislative Assembly—via a 7-2 vote—favored smoking lounges to be retained inside casinos. According to Chan Chak Mo, the chairman of the sub-commit-tee, said that the seven (7) assembly mem-bers agreed to the idea of smoking lounges, even suggesting that they be allowed to stay as long as they don’t affect the health of the casino workers.

It can be remembered that in 2014, the gov-ernment of Macau passed a bill that will ban smoking inside the main gaming floors of casinos. Players who smoke can only do so inside airport-style enclosed smoke lounges that are away from the tables or slot ma-chines. Smoking inside VIP rooms are still allowed. However, fast forward to next year, and Macau officials came up with a plan to finally put an end to smoking inside all of the casinos, which reflects the effort of the gov-ernment of the People’s Republic of China to minimize the number of people smoking in the public places in the mainland.

In this new bill that was introduced in June 2015, not only would the lounges disappear completely inside the casinos, but fines would also be imposed on violators. The next month, the Legislative Assembly approved the proposed bill in its first reading via a 26-2 vote. Of course, the plan to totally ban smok-ing inside casinos were strongly opposed by casino and junket operators, in which they claim that subsequent passage of the bill into law would ultimately put the already collaps-ing gaming sector into further misery.

Fast forward to today, and the legislators acted to finally decide that smoking lounges will be here to stay. According to a note by Union Gaming, the issue of smoking in casi-nos may take some time to be resolved, even saying that there will be a closure of some sort come 2017. Union Gaming analyst Grant Govertsen, however, emphasized that there is a still a risk that a total smoking ban may still be implemented. On the other hand, he also said that based on their analysis, a full smoking ban is “significantly detrimental” to Macau’s GGR with further declines “in excess of 5 percent.”

In the last issue of The Monthly Bet, we dis-cussed about Brazil and how its government is looking to regulate land-based and online gambling in an effort to boost its struggling economy. The amended bill also puts into account taxation rates for both land-based and online gaming activities.

Currently, the bill is still in Congress, and despite issues surrounding the bill and its possible passage such as the ongoing politi-cal turmoil in Brazil and strict opposition among religious groups, many policymakers are showing their support for the authoriza-tion of gambling in the country. Last month, the Brazilian Gaming Congress was held, already an indication that gambling may be on its way. Lawmakers in the event spoke with enthusiasm in support of Senate Bill 186/2014, which is seen as something that will attract investors from all over the world, will cause a steady stream of revenue to the state, and will fend off the illegal market.

The Global Gaming Expo Asia (G2E Asia) is the largest gaming and entertainment indus-try event that serves as a one-stop sourcing platform for suppliers wanting to showcase their new and current products, meet quali-fied buyers, and establish connections. Over 95% of Asian casino operators attend this annual event to check out innovative prod-ucts and solutions from various suppliers, as well as gather insights on upcoming industry trends across the Asian gaming scene. Co-organized by the American Gaming Association and Reed Exhibitions, G2E Asia is held annually in Macau, which is the primary gaming hub in Asia.

This year’s G2E Asia happened last month, May 17 to 19, and it saw a record-breaking attendance, with a total of 10,984 visitors from 83 countries and regions coming to The Venetian Macau for the three-day event. This was an uptick of over 11 percent from last year’s G2E. In terms of the number of exhibi-tors, this year saw 180 exhibitors—a 12 per-cent increase from the previous year. Forty percent of them were newcomers and 80 percent from overseas.

Stunning models graced the booth’s façade, as well as our gorgeous dealers who are there to entice passers-by to enter our booth and check out what we offer.
