    YOGACOMES TO DHI

I was pleased to learn recently that DHI nowoers ree yoga classes on Wednesday evenings.

As I am a participant in the weekly Mondaymorning Mindulness Meditation group, I

thought yoga might be a useul complementto this activity. According to Denise, our yogacoordinator, I was right, as she considers yoga

and meditation to be inextricably interlinked, putting my description that they go together,

    innit? in more educated English.

Anyone is welcome to join the group, whichtakes place every Wednesday rom 5.30pm to6.30pm. You dont have to have an interest or

participate in meditation, as I do, and you needhave no previous experience in yoga. I fnd thehour well spent, as the benefts are physical,

mental and emotional and I leave eeling thesebenefts in every way.

I you are interested in learning more, have aword with your key worker, i you have one, or

simply turn up at 1730h on any Wednesday. You will be pleasantly surprised.

So this is Christmas...Frankly, my dear, I try notto think of Christmas atall. Whereas some people

spend all year (and their money)planning the big event, to me it is

just another date on the calendar,

with the added disadvantage thateverything is shut.

I have no interest in the givingand receiving of gifts, since I haveno close family and my friends andI dont bother. My expenses extendto sending a few cards to long lostfriends with whom I have had noother contact for over thirty years its like a habit or duty, it seems.

As for the religious aspect, it lost

all credibility for me from aboutthe age of twelve, when I concludedthat such things as a virgin birth, resurrection, miracles and othersuch fairy tales simply did nothold water. Now, dont get me

wrong I m very happy for thoseChristians who truly believe; I justdont happen to share it.

The most wondrous thing aboutChristmas for me is the abilityto wander the streets of Bath at

will, without the usual scrum on

the pavements (and no cyclists),plus being free to cross the roadanywhere with no superiormotorist beeping at me as if Imeither too blind or too stupid to

judge the distance and time to doit safely without being squashed.

I should admit here that Ihave partly been playing Devils

Advocate. I am not quite thebah, humbug old geezer

the above might suggest. In fact, this year I have

been invited to shareChristmas lunch with afriend, going halves on theexpenses. So, after my Quaker

Meeting, I shall appear at her doorarmed, I earnestly pray, with a fewcartons ofgrape juice, to celebrateChristmas in our own way.

May you all have the Christmasyou deserve (or even the one youwant!), as well as a good new year

    (without any fear).Best wishes.

    A

t this time of year, westart thinking about thecost of Christmas. How big a turkey can

I afford to buy? How much canI afford to spend on my son/daughter/mum/dad? Howexpensive a present can I buyfor my boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife without puttingmyself in the red?

Others will be pondering onwhats going to be on TV overChristmas. I hope theyre notgoing to showThe Wizard of Oz/

Its a Wonderful Life again! Icant wait for this yearsDoctorWho Christmas Special! I

wonder what blockbuster lmsthe BBC/ITV will show this year.

The children meanwhile willsimply be wondering what Santa

will bring them in their stockings.Current favourites being, I

believe, Blackberry phones,iPads and Xbox 360. But I

could be wrong. But with all this talk of turkey,

TV and presents, how manypeople have stopped to think

what Christmas is actuallyabout? As Cliff Richard sang in

his 1990 Christmas No. 1,Will we ever remember himon the Saviours Day?

    The commercialism

surrounding Christmas hasobscured the fact that Christmascelebrates the birth of JesusChrist (note: a person, not aconvenient means of swearing)in a stable in Bethlehem 2,000

years ago, a birth which splitshistory in two B.C. and A.D. and although it passedunnoticed at the time, it hadeternal ramications.

People make the mistake ofleaving the baby Jesus in thestable, saying what a sweet little

baby he was, surrounded by theshepherds and the wise men.But Jesus grew up, worked withhis father Joseph as a carpenter, and then at the age of 30 was

baptised and began his work ofpreaching and teaching, whilealso displaying his divinity with

his miracles turning waterinto wine, feeding ve thousandpeople with just ve loavesand two sh, walking on water, stilling a storm with a commandand raising three people from

death. Then nally he wasarrested, underwent a farragoof a trial and then was putto death in the cruellest way

possible, crucixion. Threedays later he rose again fromdeath, and forty days after thatascended into heaven.

Jesus death on the cross andhis subsequent resurrectionoccurred for a reason by dyingon the cross he took on himselfthe sins of every person who everlived, in the past, present andfuture, and by his resurrection he

enabled all those who put theirtrust in him as their Saviour tohave spiritually satisfying lives, and the knowledge of eternal lifein heaven when they die.

This is what Christmas isabout. Not Santa Claus, notChristmas lms and TV specials,

but the best present ever given a baby in a manger, who grewup to be the Saviour of humanity

by his death on a cross andsubsequent resurrection. Nota person whose name can bethrown away as an epithet, but aperson we can trust, and the bestfriend we could ever have.

Hw and why did yu ge his

pin in yur career and why did

yu wan ge in his ype

    wrk in he frs place?

I came from a background thatcouldnt be more removed from

working in DHI! I worked in thebanking sector over in Bristol for13 years before I was made redun/dant |in July 2009. I had started

working for the bank straightafter I nished college, just as atemporary measure and then therest is history as they say.... I hadheard about the work DHI wasdoing then the Receptionist job

was advertised and I applied, never

    thought Id get it!!

    Wha d yu fnd ms

    rewarding abu yur jb?

I love the interaction with peopleeveryday and for me, its just beingable to help people, never mindhow small a contribution it might

be and also when you see peoplemake a real turn around in theirlives for the good.

Wha d yu fnd ms difcul

    abu yur jb?

When you see clients that haveparticularly challenging situationsand its upsetting how frustratedand scared they can be - there areso many tough and sometimeshorrible times for people.

    In he even a zmbie

apcalypse wha seps wuld yuake ensure yur survival?

I think we would denitelybarricade ourselves up in a localshop, with plenty of supplies tosee us through or possibly try very

hard to escape out into the countrysomewhere with all of our festivalequipment and set up campsomewhere!

Wha are yur career and lie

    gals?

I dont really have any particularcareer goals as such right now Iam happy with my lot and my lifeand would like to continue withthe job I love doing and just do the

    best I can in it.

Wha is yu avurie bk, flm,

    album and plae d?

Food thats an easy one for me roast dinner and all the trimmings

Album so difcult as this changeson a daily basis to be honest Ihave a really wide taste in music

    In weny wrds describe

Out with my husband and ourclosest best friends, great food

followed by a gig for a good dance!

I yu were PM wha laws wuld

    yu inrduce r change?

Oh gosh, I am no expert inthese things at all but I wouldimprove mental health servicesand make it more accessible forpeople that really need it ratherthan having to endure so muchred tape. I would also like tomake more emergency temporaryaccommodation available for

people that nd themselvessuddenly homeless and easierto access. Also would bring backthe grant system for universityaccommodation.

Wh wuld be yur perec dinner

    pary guess?

I could just choose so many buthere are a few: Johnny Depp,Jack Dee, Freddie Mercury, French

& Saunders, Kate Moss. I think theywould all have some very interestingstories to tell thats for sure theresthe comedy factor as well.

    Wha were yur childhd

    aspirains and which nes have

    yu ulflled?

Cant really remember whatmy childhood aspirations

were!! I think I wanted to be an

archaeologist or a spacewomanat some points, neither of whichhave happened ha ha!!! I thinkmost people end up doingsomething different to what theydream about as kids... otW

l This excellent novel wasrecommended by the neighbour

who lent it to me. Being alreadyfamiliar with the books and lmsofThe Da Vinci Code andAngels

And Demons, I began this novelwith great expectations; I was notto be disappointed. If anything, I

enjoyed this work even more thanthe two aforementioned. In the

word coined by the WashingtonPost, I found it unputdownable.

The story again features Harvardprofessor, Robert Langdon, as theprincipal character. The mainaction, and theres plenty of it,takes place in and around theCapitol building in Washington,DC. Langdon quickly nds himself

embroiled in a world of sinisterMasonic secrets, Ancient Mysteriesand the search for his close friendand mentor, Peter Solomon, whohas been kidnapped and had his

right hand sent as proof. If theintricate details of Masonic ritesand beliefs are accurate, Brownmust either be a Mason, knowone who has revealed suchsecrets or have done an incredibleamount of research into whatis generally considered to be a

closely guarded secret society. The action in this novel

never lets up until its explosiveconclusion, keeping the reader(or this reader, at any rate)spellbound from start to nish. That is to say, up to the point

where the bad guy, whose trueidentity came as a completesurprise, is dealt with and Solomonis found. There then follows a

rather esoteric and long-windedepilogue about the search for the

Ancient Mysteries and The Word, most of which I found somewhattedious after all the foregoing

action and adventure. Still, chacuna son gout.

All in all, my slight misgivings

about the nal sectionnotwithstanding, I recommendthis as a riveting read, whether youhave read Browns other works ornot.Jim Timoney

lI went to see this lm at theOdeon Senior Screen showing, their reduced price Tuesdaymorning presentation for the ftyplus clientele. Id heard goodreports of it and it happens to bea period of history that intereststhis former history student.

Allowing for a degree ofcinematic licence, I found the

lm interesting, fascinating andenjoyable to watch. Firth gavean excellent portrayal of a man

with a pronounced stammerwhich made it almost impossiblefor him to speak in public. Some

of the scenes where hesgoing to extremes to correctthis stammer seemed to besomewhat over the top, but

who knows? It was a joy to see how

the future King George VIgradually changed his attitudeto his speech therapist. Initiallyexpecting to be treated with

deference, he eventually lookedupon his mentor as a friend as

well as his therapist, being on rstname terms, at least in private.

Apart from the main storyof Bertie, as he was known

to his family and eventuallyhis therapist, overcoming hisstammer, the lm gave a good

background of the 1930s,touching on the abdication crisis,Hitlers lebensraum in Europeand the Duke of York having toascend the throne as George VI.

lThis lm will almost certainlybe available on DVD by thetime you read this review. I wasinvited to go and see it at theOdeon by a fellow Harry fan. Itscourtesy of her that Ive now readall of the novels and seen all of thelms. Whilst this last one was far

from being among my favourites,I still thoroughly enjoyed it and

was glad of the opportunity to seethe conclusion of the decade-longseries.

This lm is denitely muchdarker and more violent than anyof its predecessors, showing as itdoes the climactic war between

Voldermort (yes, I dare to use hisname!) and Harry and his plucky

    band of supporters. Voldermorts

forces appear unstoppable butit was a pleasure to watch theplot unfold as the forces of Goodgradually prevailed.

My favourite scene was Harrysheart to heart with the lateDumbledore its a fantasy, just

accept it! The only part I have my

doubts about is the nal scene, tacked on as if an afterthought, set nineteen years in the future. Isuppose, though, it serves to bringclosure to the whole saga and letthe viewer know that all the goodguys, the quick and the dead, livedhappily ever after.

This is by far the most actionpacked lm of the series. Itcontinues and nalises the searchfor the remaining horcruces(look, its a pretend word, so Illpluralise it as I choose) and settlesthe conict between Voldermortsforces and Harry and the DarkLords opponents. A must for allHarry fans (and any others whoenjoy a good fantasy feature).

    Jim Timoney

lJunes Book Club choice wasa classic novel which celebratedits ftieth anniversary last year.

The title comes from the localbelief that its OK to shoot all thebluejays you want but rememberits a sin to kill a mockingbird. The reason is that mockingbirdsdont do anything to upsethumans all they do is sing theirhearts out for us. Set in the DeepSouth of the USA in the 1930s, itis told in the rst person by ScoutFinch and is seen through the eyes

of Scout and her older brother,Jem.

The early part of the bookspends a great deal of timerelating their childhood daysand the development of their

    relationship withtheir mysterious andunseen neighbour,

Boo Radley. I foundmyself getting a bit

bored, or at leastimpatient to getto the main plot; Isuspect, however, that this was due to having seenthe much acclaimed lm versionfrom 1962, starring Gregory Peck.Surprisingly, I had never beforeread the novel, so I was interested

to see how I would nd it incomparison with the lm. I wasnot to be disappointed.

The plot centres on the rapeof a white girl, the blame for

which is placed with a black

man, Tom Robinson.Atticus, the fatherof Scout and Jem, is

appointed to defendTom, earning himthe disapprobationof most of the whitecommunity. The

valiant attempt byAtticus to defend Tom in the faceof such prejudice makes for verystirring reading.

I found that the author evokesgrowing up in that time and place

with extreme sensitivity andinsight. She really does make mefeel as if Im looking through theeyes of Scout and Jem. Im gladI nally got around to reading itafter all this time. Jim Timoney
