ry), at about 21:40, a coupleliving onDagbreek farm onthe foothills of Paarl Moun-tain in Paarl North wereheld up by three men ofwhom two were wearingbalaclavas.According to police

spokesperson, Capt Louisedu Plessis, the suspects ap-parently entered the housethrough an open doorwhilst the couple were inthe lounge.The suspects tied their

hands and demanded cashand firearms.They then fled the scene

with jewellery, a laptop, anundisclosedamountof cashand a .22 Winchester rifle.On Sunday evening (5

April) a woman living onSonweelde Farm in PaarlNorth along the R45, wokeup to the soundof intrudersin the house and saw twomen rummaging in herfridge. She was alone at thetime.She managed to lock her

bedroom door and phonethe police.On their arrival the men

had fled, presumably withbottles of wine and food.In both cases, no arrests

have yet been made.

High alert on roads pays offLast Thursday a record total of24 100 vehicles made their waythrough the Huguenot Tunnel asholiday-makers left for theirEaster weekend destinations.According to Eric Eksteen, the

general manager at HuguenotTunnel, the Thursday beforeGood Friday is traditionallytheir busiest day of the longweekend. “Fortunately therewere no accidents,” he said.Vehicles numbered 20 442 on

Monday when motorists madetheir way back home.At a roadblock held last Thurs-

day from 16:00 until 21:30 on theR44 near Nelson’s Estate, finesworth R56 000 were issued.According to Municipal Man-

agerJohannMettler,230vehicleswere stopped at the roadblock.Altogether 24 drivers were finedfor driving without a valid li-

cense, while 34 drivers werefined for driving unlicensed ve-hicles.Other transgressions include

is thehighnumberofpedestriansthat are being knocked downacross the province. This class offatality will require further at-tentionmovingforward,aswere-viewtheefficacyofourcombinedefforts,” said DonaldGrant,Min-ister of Transport and PublicWorks in the Western Cape.The highest number of fatali-

ties over the Easter weekend intheWesternCapewas reached in2010 when 28 people died.In the Western Cape, 24 road-

blocks were conducted and finesworth R335 000 were issued.

A roadblock was also held on Thursday on the N1 in Paarl.

Illegal street racing in Paarl continues to grow in popularityThecontroversysurroundingillegaldragrac-ing on local and provincial roads in andaround Paarl lingers on.And despite occasional efforts by various

law enforcement agencies, it seems as if thissport continues to grow in popularity.Almost eachweekend residents of especial-

ly Paarl South are woken up by roaringcrowds cheering on racers on the nearby N1.An eyewitness whowishes to remain anon-

ymous told Paarl Post that around 23:00hordes of people make their way, equippedwith camping chairs and refreshments, toview this sport.“It looks as if these people are descending

upon a huge sport event such as at Newlands.“When the racing takes place on the N1,

they park near the Paarl Mall and from theretheywalk to either theN1, or the bridge goingover the N1 at Ceceli Street.“Bigmoneyis involved,notonly for the fast-

est racers, but with the crowds laying betsamongst themselves as well.”Other drag racing hot spots in Paarl are the

Parys Road and Klein Drakenstein Road.However, despite road safety operations,

this illegal practice just continues.At a recent operation in March, local and

provincial traffic departments, together withthe police brought some relief when they set

up road blocks as part of ongoing operationsto ensure road safety in Drakenstein.Areas targeted were Jan van Riebeeck

Drive, Parys Avenue and Klein DrakensteinRoad.According to Drakenstein Municipal Man-

ager, Johann Mettler, this operation provedto be particularly successful in apprehendingdrunk drivers. Fines to the total of R39 200were issued fordrivingwithout licenses,unli-censed vehicles and driving without a seatbelt, while 57 arrest warrants were served.In a previous enquiry about illegal street

racing in Drakenstein, Mettler said that thisproblem is not only affecting the area, but thewholecountry,andthat thenatureof theprob-lem makes it difficult to address or curb it.He further stated that drag racing is, by

their standards, not classified as speedingbutrather as reckless and negligent driving andshould therefore be dealt with by the police.However, the two services, with the help ofprovincial traffic, are working together on aregular basis to try and limit these activitiesand apprehend the perpetrators, he said.According toMettler the traffic department

hasbeen exploring thepossibility of a 24-hourroad service and whether it will address theproblem more effectively, but said there aresome challenges with regard to labour law

and the impact on tax levies.Brigadier Neville Malila, Paarl Police Sta-

tion Commander, agreed that drag racing inthe greater Paarl area is of concern to boththe police and the law enforcement agenciesandconfirmed that theyareworking togetherto“clampdownontheirregularityandillegal-ity of drag racing”, as they view it as a “collec-tive law enforcement responsibility”.He also said that roads are being patrolled

and incidents thathavebeenreportedbycom-munity members are being investigated.In the meantime, a resident of Paarl South

saidtheyhaveengagedwithvariousroleplay-ers in several meetings and although theremay just be some light at the endof the tunnel,details of these discussions can not be madepublic yet.In casesof drag racing, thePaarlOperation-

Heelwat lesers sou al die die“Groot Boom” tussen Knysna enPlettenbergbaai besoek het. Dit is’n besondere grootgeelhout geleë vlaklangs dieN2 en omdatdit so maklik toe-ganklik is, word ditjaarliks deur sowat92 000 mense besoek.

Dit is eintlik ’n ver-keerde benaming virdie boom, aangesien dieboom nie die grootstegeelhout in die Knysnabos is nie. Al-lermins, daardie eer kom die KoningEduard VII boom toe. In nasionaleverband is die “Groot Boom” eintlikglad nie ’n besonder groot boom nie;die omtrek op borshoogte (1,37 m) is9,15 m en die hoogte is 39,6 m.

Die grootste boom bekend in Suid-Afrika in terme van stamomtrek isdie Sagole kremetart geleë in ’n afge-leë deel van die Limpopo Provinsie.Dit is ’n regte “vettie” met ’n omtrekvan33,72 m,maardiehoogte is ’nska-mele 22 m. Ten spyte van die afstandvanaf die stedelike gebiede is dieboom langs ’n hoofpad (ongeteer) ge-leë en dit ontvang ’n redelike aantalbesoekers elke jaar.

Die hoogste boom in Suid-Afrika isook so ver bekend die hoogste boomop die vasteland van Afrika. Dit iseen van die Magoebaskloof Drieling,’n groepie besondere bome in ’n op-stand vanEucalyptus salignawat ge-durende 1906 op Woodbushstaatsbos,naby Haenertsburg in Limpopo, ge-plant is. Die boom ontvang baie minbesoekersaangesiendit indiemiddelvan die bos is, maar die roete van dienasionale voetslaanpad is aangepassodat dit vlak langs die Drieling ver-by loop en dit is dus relatief maklikom dit te bereik.

Die boom is ’n ongelooflike 81,5 mhoog, maar dit is relatief slank met’n omtrek van slegs 4,28 m. Die kroonis nie groot nie aangesien die boomin ’n ewe-jarige geplante bos is.

Al die bogenoemde bome is ver-klaarde Nasionale Kampioenbomeen ons het duidelik ’n “groot” een, die“dik” een en die “lang” een, so welke

is die grootste? Bosbouers gebruik ’nsaamgestelde nommer bekend as dieGrootte-indeks, saamgestel van diestamomtrek,diehoogteendiegemid-delde kroonwydte om dit te bepaal.In die drie gevalle hierbo is die groot-te-indeks onderskeidelik 358, 440 en438,sodiegrootsteboominSuid-Afri-ka is die Sagole Kremetart. Of liewerdit was.

Die grootste boom in SA is reg hierop ons voorstoep, in die Dwarsrivier-vallei van die Boland, tussen Stellen-bosch en Franschhoek, op die histo-riese Boschendal wyn- en vrugte-landgoed. Die boom is onlangsontdek deur boomkundige Leon Vis-ser en prof. Brian Bredenkamp watalbei op die minister van landbou,bosbou en visserye se adviserendepaneel vir die nasionale kampioen-boomprojek dien. Die boom is eenvan 40 in ’n laning van Karri-bloe-koms (Eucalyptusdiversicolor) en dielaningisonlangsingeheeltot ’nNasi-onale Kampioenlaning verklaar. Ditsal binnekort as sodanig in dieStaatskoerant aangeteken word.

Die grootste boom in die laning het’n stamomtrek van 8,7 m, die hoogteis 50,4 m en tesame met ’n noemens-waardige kroonwydte is die grootte-indeks ’n allemintige 483 – by verredie grootste ooit in Suid-Afrika aan-

geteken. Die boom is dalk nie die dik-ste of die hoogste nie, maar dit is on-getwyfeld die grootste.

Die laning was waarskynlik as ’nwindskerm vir die vrugteboordeaangeplant en is geleë langs wat ver-moedelik die hooftoegangspad na dieherehuis op Boschendal was.

Die herehuis is gebou in 1790 en ditis dus nie ’n onredelike aanname datdie bome in die laning reeds 225 jaaroud is nie. Die laning kan duidelikin die verte vanaf die R310 gesienword, kort voordat die pad by die R45aansluit, maar aangesien die laningin ’n vrugteboord op privaat grondstaan, is dit nie vir die publiek toe-ganklik nie.

Maar dit gaan binnekort verander.Die eienaar en landgoedbestuurdervan Boschendal is albei opgewondeoor die feit dat die grootste lewendeorganisme in die land op hul grondgevind is. Hulle sal eersdaags die no-dige doen om besoekers te verwel-kom, maar daar moet eers parkeringbeskikbaar gestel word en maatreëlsmoet getref word om vertrapping opdie wortelsone van die boom te voor-kom. Natuurlik moet daar ook onge-lukkig iets gedoen word om die boomteen die verpesting van graffiti te be-skerm. Na alles is hierdie tog ’n nasi-onale bate.

Prof. Brian Bredenkamp en boomkundige Leon Visser weerskante van diestam van ‘n karribloekom (Eucalyptus diversicolor) op Boschendallandgoedin die Dwarsriviervallei, tussen Stellenbosch en Franschhoek. Die omtrek vandie boom se stam is 8,7 m, die grootste in ‘n laning van 40 bome wat onlangs tot Nasionale Kampioenlaning verklaar is.

tourism which greatly contribute towards the economy.And almost in the same breath one reads about the continuous illegal

drag racing that takes place almost every weekend on public roads inPaarl.The urgency to address these illegal activities apparently does not

exist. They aremanifestations of a societywhere lawlessness abounds.When talking to various affected parties behind the scenes, it is clear

that one of the main problems is that in the event of such criminalsappearing in a court of law, nine times out of ten, they will soon beback on the streets again, up to their old tricks.With this in mind, the public has become hesitant to make a case

against criminals. The never-ending, tiresome court appearances sel-dom lead to a positive conviction or a prison sentence.As long as our justice system continues to fail us, lawlessness will

continue to increase. And as far as the criminals are concerned, it willbe “business as usual”!

littering of all sorts of waste at thenow self-made dumping zone onthe open land betweenHarper andPaulusStreets (next to theApostol-ic Church) in Paarl East.The sight is inevitably disgust-

ing and causesmultiple visual andunhygienic problems for peopleliving in the surrounding area.It is even more of a problem

when strongwinds hit the area be-cause this same waste is thenspread into the yards of houses inHarper, Paulus andEvans Streets.Now, imagineconstantlyhaving

to deal with the immense problemof picking up and discarding of amass amount ofwaste on a regularbasis that is not even your own.

Also, imagine having to do thisif you are elderly, below the age of10 years, or already suffering fromillnesses that may be worsened bythe intake of this rubbish.An even larger problem occurs

whenabsolutelynothing isdone toresolve the problem. We are indi-rectly told to accept it when noth-ing is done. Although some wasteis removed weekly, the overallproblemremains; there is still a re-mainder of waste! The solutionfrom our municipality is to pro-

videblackplasticbags tomemberswhose houses are being trashedwith this waste. In essence, theseelderly people, who have spentyearspaying their taxes, nowhaveto once again dealwith the respon-sibility of the municipality of theday.This scenario in many aspects

involves the lack of respectamongst humanitarian and socialclassdivisions.Theareawheretheproblem occurs is largely middleclass to lowerclass-based. If the ex-act same problem hypotheticallyhad to have occurred in an areawhere so-called high-class societalmembers lived, theproblemwouldhave been removed much faster.So, the questions at hand; why

So dikwels sien ons jong kinders op straatenneemaanhulleverkiesomnie skool toete gaan nie, maar meestal skuil daar ietsveel dieper onder die oppervlak.

Armoede, dwelms en alkoholmisbruik het’n groot invloed op talle skoolgaande kindersse lewe en is dikwels die rede waarom hulleuit die skoolstelsel val.

Maar met die hulp van Khula DevelopmentGroup se veldwerkers is honderde kinders dieafgelope jaar weer terug op die skoolbanke.

Khula, wat groei in Xhosa beteken, se veld-werkers is vroue uit Paarl-Oos wat hulle be-skikbaar stel om om te sien na die gemeenskapse kinders.

Die vroue is opgelei en bemagtig met die no-dige kennis en vaardighede om verskillendesituasies teontleedentehelpomkindersterugby die skool te kry.

“Die veldwerkers is ’n verlengingsarm en’n ondersteuningsnetwerk vir onderwysersen maatskaplike werkers,” vertel Daleen La-buschagne, algemene bestuurder van Khula.

Daleen en haar man, Erns Labuschagne, hetin 2009 die leisels by die stigters oorgeneem.

Daleen verduidelik dat Khula ’n gemeen-skapsgebaseerde Christelike bediening is watwerk met leerderafwesigheid.

“Wanneer leerders nie skool toe gaan nie,sal die skool die ouers nader. Wanneer dit niewerk nie, nader hulle die Khula-veldwerkerswatbetrokkeisbyhulskoolenwatdanhuisbe-soek doen.”

Khula het 17 veldwerkers wat 14 primêreskole en vier sekondêre skole op versoek in

Paarl-Oos bedien. Die vroue werk in pare enhet sedert 2014 ook na Simondium en Klap-muts uitgebrei.

“Ons het die vroue geleer om foto’s te neemmet hul oë, om te kyk en te luister na die om-standighede in die huis. ’n Voltooide aanmel-dingsvorm word dan deur die vroue ingevulen vir die skool gegee wat dan die nodige stap-pe volg.”

Sy vertel dat die vroue ook opvolgbesoekedoen en ondersteuning aan die gesinne bied.

“Die veldwerkers is sowaar ’n steunpilaarvir ons. Hulle is in die gemeenskap en gewaardie probleme soveel gouer. Omdat die kindershulle dikwels in die omgewing sien, voel hulleook baie gemaklik om met hulle te gesels.”

Volgens Daleen is daar soveel verskillenderedes waarom kinders nie skool toe gaan nieen dat dit belangrik is om die redes te weetsodat die kind hulp kan kry.

“Baie keer dink ’n mens dis die ouer kinderswat weg van die skool af bly, maar daar is kin-ders so jonk soos in graad R, 1 en 2. Hulle daagpartykeer vir dae of weke nie op nie,” vertelCarien van Zyl, Khula se maatskaplike wer-ker.

Carien vertel die oorsaak is meestal nie datdie kind nie skool toe wil gaan nie, maar om-standighede wat daartoe lei.

“Partykeer is dit omdat mamma vir die dag’n werkie gekry het. Juis omdat die nood sogroot is, moet sy gaan werk om kos op die tafelte sit en omdat sy nie ’n ondersteuningsnet-werk het nie, is dit baie keer die ouer boetieof sussiewatnadiekleinerkindersmoetkyk.”

Sy vertel dat daar al gevalle was waar ’ngr. 1-kind na ’n eenjarige boetie of sussie moetkyk omdat daar niemand anders is nie.

Vir die kind wat terug is by die skool hetKhula ook vrywilligers wat help om hul agter-stand met die skoolwerk in te haal.

Khula bied ook ondersteuning aan kindersseprimêreversorgerwatdikwelsniediebiolo-giese ma is nie. By Butterfly House in Fairy-land kom die primêre versorgers bymekaarwaar hulle geestelik gevoed, kreatief gestimu-leer en ouerleiding gegee word.

“Ons kan hulle die granny police noem. Soword hulle dan ook die oë en ore van die veld-werkers,” sê Daleen.

Vir die ouer kinders wat nie terug skool toekan gaan nie, word daar drie dae ’n week byButterfly House klasse aangebied om hulle tebemagtig om produktief te word en nie opstraat te sit nie.

Daleen vertel dat twee jong manne as baris-tas (koffiekenners) opgelei is en ander kelner-opleiding ontvang het.

“Ons glo elke kind moet hoop hê vir die toe-koms. Hulle moenie voel dat hulle niks bete-ken nie. Hulle moet weet hulle kan eendag in’n beroep staan.”

Khula doen ’n beroep op mense om by hullebetrokke te raak. Mense in professionele be-roepewordookgevraomhuldiensbeskikbaarte stel.

“Mense is bang om uit hul gemaksone tetree. Ons wil nie op ons eie werk nie; ons wilhande vat.”
