Palestinian Statehood: U.S. Tries To Avert Crisis Over Vote At UN

In September 2011, the U.N. General Assemblyis expected to vote on a resolution recognizing Palestinian statehood.

This resolution is linked to Palestinian efforts to obtain U.N. membership as a state and to delegitimize Israel.

These efforts will have no legal significancebecause the General Assembly has no standing to recognize statehood—that is the right of sovereign states—or to grant U.N. membership without the Security Council’sprior recommendation, which the U.S. has indicated it willveto.

But they will undermine U.S. interests by escalatingtensions and harming efforts to resolve the internationalpeace and security issues in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

The U.S. should take steps to oppose the Palestinian effortto gain international recognition at the expense of Israel,rather than through negotiations with it.

As the Palestinians seek U.N. support for a state of their own, Washington has advanced two arguments to dissuade them: first, that taking the issue of statehood to the United Nations is a unilateral move away from negotiations with Israel; and second, that the effort will be counterproductive because the United States will veto any such U.N. Security Council resolution.

The White House said Tuesday night that President Barack Obama would meet with Abbas on Wednesday on the sidelines of the meeting at the UN. Obama's diplomatic delegation reiterated repeatedly that the United States, Israel's main ally, will exercise his power of veto in the Security Council if the Palestinians get the necessary 15 votes to nine that the powerful body adopt a resolution recommending the incorporation of Palestine as a member of the United Nations.

The U.S. should veto any recommendationon granting U.N. membership to Palestine,declare that the U.S. will not recognize aPalestinian state unless it renounces terrorismand recognizes Israel’s right to exist, andannounce that the U.S. will withhold contributionsto any U.N. organization that admitsPalestine as a state or grants it non-memberstate observer status.
