    1.3 Definitions

1.3.1 Steel or Other Equivalent Material

Where the words steel or other equivalentmaterial occur, equivalent materialmeans any non-combustible material which,by itself or due to insulation provided, hasstructural and integrity properties equivalentto steel at the end of the applicable fireexposure to the standard fire test (eg.Aluminium Alloy with appropriateinsulation).

    1.3.2 Non-Combustible Materials

Non-combustible materials is a materialwhich neither burns nor gives off flammablevapours in sufficient quantity for self-ignitionwhen heated to approximately 750oC.

    1.3.3 A Standard Fire Test

A Standard Fire Test is one in whichspecimens of the relevant bulkheads ordecks are exposed in a test furnace totemperature corresponding approximately tothe standard time-temperature curve. Thespecimen shall have an exposed surface ofnot less than 4.65 sq.m (50 sq. Ft) andheight (or length of deck) of 2.44m (8 ft)resembling as closely as possible theintended construction and including where

appropriate at least one joint. The standardtime - temperature curve is defined by asmooth curve drawn through the followingpoints measured above the initial furnacetemperature :-

at the end of the first 5 mins. 556oCat the end of the first 10 mins. 659oCat the end of the first 15 mins. 718oCat the end of the first 30 mins. 821oCat the end of the first 60 mins. 925oC

    CHAPTER 8.0

    8.0 STRUCTURAL FIRE INTEGRITY TABLES

The fire integrity of bulkheads and deck should comply withthe minimum fire integrity of bulkheads and decks asprescribed in Table 1 and 2.

8.1 The following requirements should govern applicationof the tables :-

8.1.1 Tables 1 and 2 should apply respectively tothe bulkheads and decks separatingadjacent spaces.

8.1.2 For determining the appropriate fire integritystandards to be applied to divisions betweenadjacent spaces, such spaces are classifiedaccording to their fire risk as shown inCategories [1] to [10] below. The title ofeach category is intended to be typicalrather than restrictive.

The number in parenthesis preceding each categoryrefers to the applicable column or row in the tables :-

    [1] Control Stations

    [2] Corridors

    [3] Accommodation Spaces

    [4] Stairways

    [5] Service Spaces (low risk)

[6] Machinery Spaces of Category A

    [7] Other Machinery Spaces

    [8] Hazardous Areas

    [9] Service Spaces (high risk)

    [10] Open Decks

a/ Where the space contains an emergency power sourceor components of an emergency power source thatadjoins a space containing a barges service generatorthe boundary bulkhead or deck between those spacesshould be an A-60 class divisions.

b/ For clarification as to which note applies seeparagraphs 8.5.1 and 8.5.3

c/ Where spaces are of the same numerical category andsuperscript (c) appears, a bulkhead or deck of therating shown in the tables is only required when theadjacent spaces are for a different purpose, e.g. incategory (9). A galley next to a galley does not requirea bulkhead but a galley next to a paint room requiresan A-O bulkhead.

d/ Bulkheads separating the navigating bridge chartroomand radio room from each other may be B-O rating.

    * Where an asterisk appears in the tables the division is

required to be of steel or equivalent material but is not

required to be of A Class standard.

8.3 Windows and sidecuttles, with the exception ofnavigating bridge windows, should be of thenon-opening type. Navigating bridge windows may beof the opening type provided the design of suchwindows would permit rapid closure. PETRONAS maypermit windows and sidecuttles outside hazardous

areas to be of the opening type.

8.4 External doors in superstructures and deckhouses shallbe constructed to A-O Class divisions and beself-closing, where practicable.

8.5 Protection of accommodation spaces, services spacesand control stations.

8.5.1 Corridor bulkheads, including doors, shouldbe A or B Class divisions extending fromdeck to deck. Where continuous B Classceiling and/or linings are fitted on both sidesof the bulkhead, the bulkhead may terminateat the continuous ceiling or lining. Doors ofcabins and public spaces in such bulkheadsmay have a louvre in the lower half of thedoor. Such openings should not be providedin a door in an A or B Class divisionforming a stairway enclosure.

8.5.2 Stairs should be constructed of steel orother equivalent material.

8.5.3 Stairways which penetrate only a single deckshould be protected at least at one level byA or B Class divisions and self-closingdoors so as to limit the rapid spread of firefrom one deck to another. Personnel lift

trunks should be protected by A Classdivisions. Stairways and lift trunks whichpenetrate more than a single deck should besurrounded by A Class divisions andprotected by self-closing doors at all levels.Self-closing doors should not be fitted withhold-back hooks. However, hold-backarrangements incorporating remote releasefittings of the fail-safe type may be utilised.

8.5.4 Air spaces enclosed behind ceilings,

panellings or linings should be divided byclose fitting draught stops spaced not morethan 14 metres apart.
