KATEXAKI SQUARECollective Planning and Design

The fi rst target of the design was the creation of a new “destination” in the city the port city of Chania. Secondly the notion of a “courtyard of culture” was introduced to support the view of a space that works and operates as a new cultural hub in the city. A third axis was the “memory sections”, design strategies that helped us solve the issue of the historical memory and the probability of archaeological fi ndings (the square is located over a part of the Old Shipyards of Chania). Finally the pedestrian routes and the issue of mobility also infl uenced the fi nal designs.Hence, the urban design composition was centered on combining different “layers” of information. The pedestrian routes, the design guides used to revitalize and im-prove the old Byzantine Wall, as well as the archeological excavations areas were among the “layers” that formed the fi nal design proposal.

“Eleftherias” (liberty) SQUARECollective Planning and Design

The proposal aims mainly to transform “Eleftherias” square into an important public space of the center of Thessaloniki. The basic strategies for the design are: the utilization of historical memory as a composition tool, the enhancement and rear-rangement of the special relationship between land and sea, the amplifi cation of movement and coexistence within the square and the environmental and economic sustainability. We design the entry of water into the city and the entry of the city into the sea through the design of a wide water zone within the square and the redesign of a small pier of the area. Additionally a big wooden structure is designed on the new pier, which resembles a picture frame gate for the sea into the square and vice versa. The historical memory is amplifi ed by the placement in specifi c spots of me-tallic slabs, on top of which information regarding historical events are engraved.

A trademark square for the city of Serres, who converses with historical heritage but boldly explores the new, the future and the sustainable. Becoming a square that supports and welcomes the move, the speed, but the market incorporating a space that promotes sustainable mobility, energy saving, green areas and especially to attract young people especially. The most powerful compositional element in the design is the creation of a green “mat”. We managed very different alignments to the ground, searching the integration, diversity and the creation of different smaller spaces. A very particular element of our proposal is the placement of “rain gardens» by combining the useof porous materials and roof gardens above the underground parking with ground cover and herbaceous plants.

BALKAN SQUARE & THEATRECollective Planning and Design

The proposal uses a design language which takes advantage of the topography (intense slopes, views) in order to form a unity which combines a multitude of social activities (culture, sports, entertainment). Use of “cold materials” and the further development of green spaces helps in the enhancement of the thermal behavior of space and the improvement of the microclimate. Furthermore we choose to use slow traffi c solutions as a basic aspect of the traffi c study. The new building volumes are linked in the wider solutions of the permeability networks and the natural charac-teristics. The design of the parking garage is based on the topography contributing in the economy of construction. Lastly the urban equipment is designed with the use of environmentaly friendly solutions and the use of recycled construction materials.

The main concept is the Sustainable Urban Block (SUB). The idea explores a methodology, as well as specific context driven planning tools, which can contribute to the sustainability of the urban life block in the minor scale. A city therefore, as a multiplexity of numerous such building blocks, could through the application of a reproducible specific methodology develop a novel sustainable approach to modern urban life. The proposal includes, except from a colorful architectural design, ap-propriate for a deeply degraded public space with special “highlights” (such as the public hot water baths, areas with sand, canopies and new plants), a rich mobility and energy management toolbox (bike lanes, bike sharing, car sharing, car and bus charging, traffic calming intersections, underground robotic parking, transparent photovoltaic panels).

1st LYCEUM IN CHANIA Collective Planning and Design

The program “the street has it’s own story, they said that children wrote it” (taken from a Greek song), started on April 2014 as an educational program of the 1st High School of Chania. The aim was, firstly, to help school students to learn about urban design and planning, urban redevelopment, the regeneration of urban environment etc. Secondly to introduce the students in designing on their own the streets around the High School building, with the use of simple materials, ephemeral structures, colors and plants. The final objective is to transform the street into a ‘shared space’.

THESSALONIKI CONCERT HALL - PHASE BArata Isozaki, detailed design by Nikos Goulias RoleI worked on this project for a year. I was mainly producing 2d draw-ings in autocad in scales from 1:100 to 1:1. Frequent visits with the leader architect and supporting the construction site was also an important part of my job. During the final phase of delivering the de-tailed design I sucessfully managed a design team of 7 architects and technicians in order to complete aprox. 1000 drawings.Designed by the renowned architect Arata Isozaki, Μ2 (building 2) adorns the city with a unique construction that epitomizes the virtues of modern architecture. Geo-metrical lines, extended glass surfaces and elements of steel compose an image of imposing simplicity. Filled with natural light and enjoying superb view to the sea, M2’s foyer develops in three levels. The foyer’s three different levels are visible from all locations and communicate by staircases and elevators.Equipped with cut-ting-edge technology and having an exceptional infrastructure, including translation booths and remote control audiovisual equipment, the main hall is principally aimed to host conventions, conferences, seminars and other secular events. Having been acoustically modeled, it is also ideal for concerts and performances given by smaller groups or solo artists; the prismatic volumes of concrete reflect important frequen-cies and eliminate resonance.

MUSEUM FOR METAL CRAFTSfreelance

The architectural study for the centre in Stemnitsa follows and yet actively contributes in the mulitiplicate targeting of contemporary museum - educa-tional perception.Key components for the space formation are the principles of rotation and accessi-bility. The design of the museum itinerary serves a morphology of exploration. The visitor is invited to wander and discover a space configuration that does not reveal in advance the entire exhibition. In terms of respecting the scale and size of the particular space, without excesses that will disappoint the visitor (e.g. continuous straight routes or overuse of labyrinthine space formation) the morphology of explo-ration is created.

BUNGALOWS IN KOUFONISSIAfreelance

The architectural project envisages the creation of six buildings covering 400 sq.m. The outdoor spaces are following the natural slope of the site and the whole area is being divided into smaller spaces. Courtyards, green areas and these of common use form an intresting architectural proposal while being linked by paths-paved streets. The study provides parking spots for all dwellings. A key criterion was the proper orientation for adequate lighting and ventilation of all premises.Switching the layout of the complex South - Southeast as a “lap” ensures the important prereq-uisites for space of high quality: a) sea view optimasitation , b) dwelling develop-ment around a central area that also hosts the pool and c) optimised orientation of terraces and courtyard to the south while at the same time buildings protect open areas from northern breeze. Both setup and materials follow the tradition of Cyclad-ic architecture.

THISSION BUTIQUE HOTELNikos Goulias Architects

Situated since 1966 next to the archaeological sites the building of Thission hotel was renovated retaining only the bearing structure. It consists of basement, three floors and a roof garden of about 180 m2 each. Renovation aimed to create a hotel with an emphasis on multi-purpose spaces, exhibition spaces and events, presentations and receptions, dining and entertainment, while creating suites of high quality and aesthetic standards. The architectural choices through form and use of proper materials create an austere geometric rectangular prism, in which rhythm and order is reminded. Externally and internallyis gray sandstone is used as a reference to the rock colours around the archaeological site. White marble slabs on both the facades and the balcony ceilings semantically refer to the “feather” (pteron) of ancient temples.
