Please GiveUSA – 1 hr 31 min - Nicole Holofcener PLEASE GIVE is writer/director Nicole Holofcener’s perceptive and devastatingly funny take on modern life’s contradic-tions, good intentions and shaky moral bearings. Set in New York, the primary story is about a family that buys an ad-joining apartment from an elderly woman. But they can’t take possession until she passes away. This tone-perfect film pres-ents a subdued, almost Rohmer-like mo-rality tale. With Catherine Keener, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt and Rebecca Hall.

The City of Your Final DestinationUK – 1 hr 58 min – James Ivory A young American academic tries to persuade the heirs of a celebrated novelist to allow him to write an authorized biography. He then turns up uninvited on the family’s doorstep in Uruguay to make his case. This sophisticated drama about love and literary matters is skillfully presented by the “Merchant-Ivory” team of James Ivory, director, and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, writer. With Anthony Hopkins and Laura Linney.

Micmacs France – 1 hr 44 min - Jean-Pierre Jeunet with subtitlesThe director of the beloved Amelie brings his trademark whimsical style back to the screen with this wacky tale of a video store clerk who tries to bring down two Parisian arms dealers. Jeunet’s hyperactive imagination is applied to a 40’s-style caper film with startling results. And it almost feels like a silent film, given the sparse dialogue.

Mother and ChildUSA – 2 hr 6 min – Rodrigo GarciaThree women’s lives share a common core: they have been profoundly affected by adoption. Rodrigo Garcia’s reputation as a writer for women will increase with MOTHER AND CHILD, an insightfully observed and exceptionally acted ensemble piece. In particular, it spotlights wonderful performances by Naomi Watts, Annette Bening and Samuel L. Jackson. The cast also includes Kerry Washington, Jimmy Smits, David Morse, and Amy Brenneman.

Exit Through the Gift ShopUSA/UK – 1 hr 26 min – BanksyThis film by the elusive graffiti artist Banksy was the hottest ticket at the 2010 Sundance Film Fest. Most art documentaries are dull, glowing tributes to their subjects. Not so with EXIT, a raucously entertaining romp through the contemporary art world, which folds back on itself to examine the would-be filmmaker. This postmodern lark could be a whole new subgenre: the prankumentary.

Wild Grass France – 1 hr 53 min – Alain Resnaiswith subtitlesMaster director Alain Resnais, at the ripe age of 87, continues his career-long adventure in filmmaking with this playfully flamboyant melodrama. A lost red wallet is found, which leads to a freewheeling network of people. This engaging film explores chance and middle-age longing in a subtle and amusing fable of morals and manners. With Sabine Azema.

Get LowUSA – 1 hr 42 min – Aaron SchneiderRobert Duvall shines as a back woods coot who decides to throw a funeral party for himself – before he dies. Set in the Depression, the film has the feel of an American classic. Bill Murray is excellent as a slightly shady (what did you expect?) funeral director. With a mix of sly humor, homespun grace and affecting poignancy, GET LOW casts an irresistible spell. A real treat.

The Kids are All RightUSA – 1 hr 44 min – Lisa CholodenkoTwo teenage children get the idea to seek out their unknown birth father and introduce him to their two mothers (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore). Once the donor (Mark Ruffalo) is found, household dynamics quickly become scrambled and confused. A crowd-pleasing, feel-good comedy for an era in which the very definition of “family” is up for grabs.

That Evening Sun USA – 1 hr 50 min – Scott TeemsHal Holbrook stars as an aging Tennessee farmer who, frustrated with being confined to a nursing facility, breaks out and walks all the way home, only to discover that his son has leased the farm to another family. Things then turn nasty. Holbrook carries this atmospheric regional film as an irascible old curmudgeon who will not go gentle into that good night.

Coco Chanel and Igor StravinskyFrance – 1 hr 58 min - Jan Kounenwith subtitlesThis French drama depicts the brief and tumultuous affair between these two famous artists. Following on the heels of Coco Before Chanel, the movie is like the next chapter of a very handsome book. Beautifully shot with robust visuals that are often set to Stravinsky’s music, COCO AND STRAVINSKY is a pleasure.

Limited Engagements We try to play each of our Main Attractions films for a full multi-week run. Sometimes, however, we are unable to play a film in a timely or complete way, and it becomes a question of either squeezing them in or not playing them at all. We then often schedule those films for a couple of mid-week screenings, called Limited Engagements. Make sure that you sign up for our weekly email blast, so that you don’t miss these short, last-chance screenings.

Jaws1975 – 2 hr 4 min – USA – color – 35mm Universal – d: Steven Spielberg – w/Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard DreyfussHave you seen this film on the big screen? Now is the time with the 35th anniversary of its release. When a great white shark terrorizes the townspeople of Amity Island, a police chief, a grizzled shark hunter, and an oceanographer set out to kill it. Director Steven Spielberg invented the summer blockbuster with this white-knuckle thriller. Introduced by Rick Zengolewicz, local JAWS enthusiast and memorabilia collector.

From the late 1960s to the early 1980s, a new generation of young filmmakers came to promi-nence in America. Coppola, Scorsese, Kubrick and others led Hollywood into an artistic revival that embraced the ethos of the times. These directors embraced a gritty realism and a dark-er world view. While many of the films they made were still part of the studio system, the subject matter and styles they introduced set them apart from the studio traditions. These influential films return with all of the edge and bite they had when they were first released.

County: July 7 Wed 7:00SPAM SPAM SPAM...This special evening celebrates the comic wiles of the British comedy troupe that made us sing about Spam and question the liveliness of a certain pet shop parrot. This Python Fest will include trivia, a silly walk competition, and prizes. We’ll also screen some classic sketches from their TV show and conclude with a screening of Life of Brian.

Life of Brian1979 – 1 hr 34 min – UK – color – 35mm d: Terry Jones – w/John Cleese, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Michael PalinA religious satire about Brian, born in the stable next door to Jesus. Profane and very, very silly.

35mm or HD Digital? Yes, we are 35mm purists and we show classic movies in the original 35mm film format, if we can. However, sometimes films are not available in 35mm or the prints are in terrible shape with scratches, bad color and unacceptable sound. What then? Fortunately, great strides have been made in digital technology and sometimes the quality of a movie in HD Digital is comparable to 35mm or even better. That makes HD Digital a viable option. Only a few classic films are currently available in HD Digital, though, so this is still only a limited alternative. So, what’s the bottom line? We’ll bring you classic movies in the best possible format. Our default choice is 35mm film, but if the HD Digital format is better, then we’ll go with digital. We list the chosen format in the credits above and on our website, so you’ll know which format we’ll be screening. (One caveat, though: if a print is booked and listed in 35mm and it arrives in terrible shape, we reserve the option to jump to digital. So, check our website before you come to the theater to get any late breaking news on the presentation format.)
