When you use dry and clean firewood and give it enough air, you can just about see the smoke from the chimney. and your firing has a neutral environmental impact. When trees grow they absorb CO2 from the air. When trees rot or are burned, they release the CO2. it cancels each other out. Wood is a renewable resource. in Europe, the amount of planted trees always ex-ceeds the amount of felled trees.

The sale of fuel generates revenue which also benefits the flora and fauna in the forests. When wood is used as fuel, you save on coal, oil and gas. With a Rais you get 1st class firing. The combustion is first-rate and you take extra care of the environment.

The idea behind the Rais 500 came as a natural extension of the design spirit of the modern house. The minimalistic style with the right lines and sim-ple means in the modern architecture is also the recipe for the modern woodburning stove?- Yes exactly. The simple lines. The beautiful height and closed shape all the way around. The width and height on the glass door.

- We not only wanted good design. Form and function also had to come together. ambitions for design and function. it sounds simple – but it rarely is...

But even that succeeded, and it was a real pleasure, when the Rais 500 became reality and was ready for the customers, says development manager Villy Jacobsen.

dESIGN – IN lINE wITh mOdERN hOuSES..

Rais is a thoroughly Danish manufacturing com-pany which makes woodburning stoves, inserts and accessories in a modern production envi-ronment with the latest robot technology and measuring equipment. However, the woodburning stove concept and the company Rais has existed for more than 35 years – emerging from the former Ørskov Maskinfabrik in Frederikshavn.

The factory was founded by the Ørskov family, who later established Ørskov stålskibsværft, today Orskov Yard. in the beginning, the machinery works manu-factured traditional machine components, and in the middle of the 1990s it was sold and taken over by the swiss company, attika, and got a new name. The change to Rais a/s marked the beginning of a new era.

Today Rais has approximately 90 employees in the development, design and manufacture of woodburning stoves and accessories. The manufacture and distribution to the entire world takes place in Frederikshavn.

in architect-designed or personally designed modern houses, the fireplace is typically hidden away as an insert.

The same applies when single family houses from the 60’s and 70’s are renovated into a top modern house. Here it is actually more the rule than the exception that the insert is integrated as a warm and cosy centre of rotation for the everyday life of the family in the house.

in the top modern house, energy optimization has also been considered. Here the fire place ensures a fast heating as required.

The woodburning stoves from Rais are high technological equipment, which – as required – takes the combustion air from the outside, controlled by clever technology to avoid affecting the indoor climate!

it is also possible to move the heat in the home, meaning that the stove heats several rooms effectively.

When one of our distinguished, Danish industrial designers, Mads Odgård, decorates his rooms in a swedish cottage, he of course lives up to his own slogan: design should be human and logical in form.- Of course i chose the one that i think is best looking on the mar-ket, a Rais 700... Mads Odgård particularly accentuates the very narrow, minimalistic frame. He has built in the Rais in a way that pulls it 20 cm into the room, in line with a floorboard. Detail and whole.

When you look into the stove, you do not see plates cut to measure. No, they are shaped for the stove. and the small horizontal handle works perfectly with a small arrow on it as a symbol. any Mercedes owner would love that solution...and then something magical happens when the gas is burned off at the top of the combustion chamber – burning off the remain-ing gasses; the other manufac-turers cannot do that – that is impressive, says Mads Odgård...He also says that the stove rarely soots, and that the combustion

keeps the glass clean on the very wide door. Furthermore, it can really heat up the place - a good thing in the swedish winter, when Mads Odgård moves to the cottage.Mads Odgård does not mention the word design. Good design is a matter of course.

in a complete new low-energy house in Frederikshavn, the Rais adds a little extra heat when the family wants it. in the mornings. When they are sitting on the sofa. spring. autumn. after a trip to the sledge run.

The convection technique circulates the hot air in the room very quickly. For other heat sources it takes about a day to change the temperature.

and it really does not generate too much heat. among other reasons be-cause it can slow burn at a low effect, says the owner, Dan Christensen.

The architect Kim Bæk from aRKiNORD emphasises that the insert gets its combustion air from the outside through an air duct under the floor. and the many architectural possibilities, among other things because of the frame.

and you cannot go wrong with a Rais he says: Danish brand, a thoroughly tested quality product.

all models can be connected to the air-system, ensuring that the stove gets the combustion air from the outside.

The optimised combustion in Rais stoves gives a number of advantages: clean glass due to a special air system, great figures in connection with environmental consideration, good utilisation of the fuel and good combustion even at low firing.

added to this, is the air-cooled handle which makes the woodburning stove user friendly – it is not necessary to use a glove.

dESIGN ICON

When the designer Bent Falk created the first Rais on the sketch-pad in 1970, he probably did not know how sustainable his design would turn out to be and how much it would appeal to the spirit of the times for more than a generation. When the original Rais-design was introduced the basis was a strong ambition to create a new type of woodburning stove, which was carefully planned in form, function and design. and they succeeded.

The shape effectively broke with previous heat sources which were often decorated or created to look like furniture. Now all that was put aside for a more stringent style without superfluous details. The functionality determined the tripartition with the heat chamber at the top with built-in circular draught for better emission of heat. in the chamber you could also bake or fry, or even heat the teapot. Later, when barbecuing became popular the design was altered to accommodate this function. in the middle, the fireplace itself with the door was placed. Naturally, the firewood chamber was placed at the bottom.

The functional and pure design for both the square and round initial models would turn out to be the role model for most other wood-burning stoves manufactured since.since Bent Falk designed the first stoves Rais has continued the development based on functional and pure design.

The artists inger and Jørgen Pedersen from Herning just wanted to replace the woodburning stove in their living room. as they were walking around the stove shop among all the available models, they actually felt that one could be as good as the other. But when the dealer lit a Rais Pilar something hap-pened.- it has an amazing view of the flames, says inger Pedersen.at the same time they saw a photo of the oxidised version which has a rusty red colour.at home the couple had just finished building their 450 square meter studio with between 3 and 6 metres to the ceiling, copper on the outside and brown steel structure on the inside.- We really fell in love with that stove. We thought about the price – but there was no way around it... Now it is an invaluable part of the studio – i really, really love it.When inger starts work in her corner of the room, she lights a fire in the Pilar and turns the fire so it faces her. it is almost a ritual. When the flames start

moving behind the window it gives heat and a sense of peace. Peace to work and well-being.and then when we have visitors for a lecture about art we turn it towards the room. Then it just stands in the background emitting heat and life, says Jørgen Pedersen.in the basement below the studio, there is a wood pellet stove supplying the house and studio with heat. since the studio is thoroughly insulated and has a lot of light coming in through the large windows, making the heat from the windows, from the pellet burner and the Pilar sufficient enough to heat the studio for a substantial part of the year without the use of the floor heating.so here the stove is part of the heat supply and of the creative atmosphere in the room. But not only that.- No, because i think it is so beautiful and striking, brilliantly constructed in its high, slim shape with a pipe to the ceiling, that it is part of the art – it is a sculpture in its own right, says inger Pedersen.it should also be mentioned that the couple later bought a new Rais for the living room, a Q-20.

as the name suggests each woodburning stove is unique. The raw steel stove gets its unique surface through an oxidation process which takes place outdoors: wind, temperature and rain in beautiful unison create the special surface for a period of up to five weeks, where the stoves are tuned manually in order to make the weathering even. after the oxidation is over the stove is treated with oil which emphasises the beautiful, golden glow. Design for the modern home is functional and simple. it is quality in exclusive finish from detail to whole. The classic idiom is Danish tradition, profound knowledge and innovation. it is Danish design created for experiences, cosy atmosphere and effective heating. We call it “art of Fire” – an uncompromising and aesthetic concept based on 35 years of binding curiosity, courage and will to develop the sublime. We never compromise on function, form or quality, and our principal approach is that only the best is good enough when decorating the modern home.

NaTURaL sTONEs WiTH sECRETs... There is a dramatic story of creation behind the Finnish natural stone. The story is about wild forces of nature displacing large masses of landscape, exerting a massive pressure on geological layers, about cold and heat, about fire and water and oceans of time. Now that this inferno has finally settled down, we as human beings are left here astonished at these stones that are so full of secrets.Natural stones, soapstone, steatite – there are many ways of saying it.But we are not only astonished at them - we also embrace them. as a gift from nature. These fascinating stones, which – well – allegedly are able to keep away the evil spirits...Throughout the ages, the evil spirit has perhaps particularly been the cold during winter. We willingly believe this considering the vast Finnish forests towards the north, the many lakes and the freezing winter cold. so it is no wonder that the Finns have brought these unequalled stones to light, have lifted the veil on their secrets and have converted them into life quality in the living room, the steam bath and the kitchen. For these beautiful and heavy stones have the special ability to retain the heat for a long time. That is why Finnish Tulikivi collects the finest soapstone from the mines so that we in part are able to bring a beautiful monument of the almost artistic capabilities of nature into the living room, and in part have the pleasure of the unique ability of the stones to drag on the warmth.

Rais Juno soapstone is characterized by a unique sculptural and slim design and demonstrates a supreme heat accumulation. 255 kilos of stone retains the firing heat, which means that the stove is still above 60 degrees the next morning.so this top modern stove supplies convective heat and functions according to the mass stove principle. The tastefully rounded, light natural stones constitute a beautiful contrast to the fire and the bright glass and steel.Elegant and pure in style, impressive simplicity! available with swivel base for an optimal use of the beautiful view of the fire and a cosy atmosphere. Notice the fine data for the release of particulates and environmental friendliness. Can be connected to the aiR system intended for dense low energy houses.

Finnish natural stones retain the heat...From ancient times it has been a well-established fact that heated stones retain the heat. The same thing happens when you line a woodburning stove with Finnish natural stone: the stove accumulates the heat and gives off radiant heat for a long time, thereby utilising the firewood better. For example: you get eight hours of afterheat if you place four kg of firewood in a PiLaR 172 equipped with 94 kg of stone.

Elegant Rais design where the fireplace tools are placed in an organically shaped holder which almost appears to be floating when it is mounted on the wall. The floor model has a circular concrete base, making it sturdy and stable. With poker, broom and shovel.

all Rais products are created to achieve a quality design. That also applies to our accessories – e.g. convection grates which are built-in with an insert.inserts represent two types of convection. Partly the convection which is built into the stove, and partly the convection which, according to regulations, must be established when building-in the stove – beneath and above the stove. For inserts there is a minimum convection area which must be respected depending on the type of material used. in this way it is ensured that the stove will be air-cooled, thereby preventing overheating of the wall.in order to make it easy to meet the criteria, Rais has designed convection boxes with grills that fit the size of the individual inserts: Q-BiC insert, Rais 2:1, Rais 700 and Rais 500. We also have convection grates which fit the size of the stoves. This way a whole is created when the grills are flush with the insert. The grills are available in two versions – with long grooves and with holes.Vertically the grill is the equivalent of a course, bricks with joints.

TAKES ThE AIR IN FROm ThE OuTSIdE... in order to ensure an optimal indoor climate, woodburning stoves from Rais are able to take in the combustion air from the outside. This technology also makes it possible to use wood-burning stoves in low energy houses, where a technical control of the heat and air quality is important. The so-called air system is mounted either in the floor or on the wall behind the stove. in this way, it will not be seen. The system is standard or available as accessory.in addition to this is the so-called air-Kit, which is mounted from the top and out. a discreet covering hides the connection behind the stove. From the outside, you can only see a small grate in the wall.

Due to the continuous technical development we reserve the right to make changes without prior warning to specifications, colours and equipment. We are not responsible for misprints or mistakes in text, pictures and specifications.

Here you see them as solar collectors creating energy as the most natural thing in the world.

When you hold the firewood in your hands and you are ready to feed your woodburning stove with new energy, the thoughts may wander to the forest, from where the energy comes. This is where the trees are at work. Beautiful, green or naked, calm or unsteady depending on the time of year, the wind and weather.- I walk around in the forest nearly every day and I am truly fasci-nated by the tress. These solar collectors that absorb the light and bind the CO2, collect substances from the ground and produce energy in large amounts. And whenever I am standing in front of a Douglas spruce of nearly two hundred years of age, I almost have a feeling of deference, says Erik Dalsgaard, forest ranger for the section of Rold forest belonging to the state and a number of forests in Himmerland, a total of approximately 4000 hectares. In the climate debate, there has been much talking about inventing the perfect climate machine.- But that machine is already here in the forest, the forest ranger points out.And that is a good thing. In this way, we are able to continue utilizing the firewood in harmony with one of the most perfect cycles of nature.Since the beginning of time, Denmark has been a forest land, every-

thing was covered by forest. At the time around 1800, there was a major need for the wood, which meant that only 2 -3 percent of the forest was left untouched.Today, the forest covers 12 percent of the country. But if we all moved abroad and let the country overgrow, the whole area would become forest again in the course of three hundred years, I suppose. In the first stage, the fast conquerors such as willow, birch and common alder would grab the space. But then the beech and subsequently the oak would demonstrate their territorial growing power.- Today, we are rearranging the use of the forest from an almost agri-cultural rotation to what we call nature-based forestry. In other words, a change from having areas with each their sort of trees to letting the eco systems work with many sorts of trees in one area. We have given the power back to nature, says forest ranger, forest and landscape engineer Erik Dalsgaard. In this way, the logging takes place on a regular basis instead of fell-ing complete areas at the same time. But the growing power remains the same, and the forestry has always delivered timber as well as fuel.- Since 2009, we have witnessed an increasing number of people who want to cut down their own trees. This is hard work. But a great pleasure, when the firewood is stacked at home and you are ready for the winter...

And a good tip here is to give the stack of firewood the best place in the garden. Not hidden behind a north-facing wall. But right there, where the sun really gets in and where there is plenty of air, so that the firewood can be ready for use. There are actually three good advices. It must be dry. And it must be dry. And then the firewood must be dry, before the pieces are put into the woodburning stove, says forest ranger Erik Dalsgaard from Skørping.

Facts:Actually, all types of trees are good firewood. The heavy wood has the best heating value. But coniferous tree such as spruce on the hand has a useful content of resin. Beech is the best material for making layers of embers. Oak contains more tannic acid, which might corrode the metals in the woodburning stove, if it is not sufficiently dry. A hygrometer is available in any do-it-yourself centre. The firewood is ready for use when the hygrometer shows a water content of 18 percent or lower. The most efficient place to dry the firewood is under a shed roof.

FASCINATION ANd RESPECT FOR ThE TREES IN ThE FOREST...
