F. Evaluation on Annual School Plan and Key Projects (a) Annual School Plan Major concern 1: To develop the school as an effective learning community Implementation plan related to outcome (a):

Collaboration on the part of teachers has been enhanced. Strategies and Evaluation

(1) All subjects have to strive for better collaboration on the aspect(s) identified by the panel such as: compilation of teaching notes that can cater for students of different abilities, collaborative lesson planning in teaching difficult topics, increasing students’ participation in lessons, the implementation of curriculum throughout the years, and other areas that need improvement. To facilitate implementation and coordination, details of the strategies should also be clearly indicated in the programme plan. Evaluation All phase II subjects1 formulated their strategies and implementation plan. Their strategies can be categorized into: designing a set of uniform teaching notes, like Economics, BAFS and Biology, designing teaching materials to cater for learner diversity by subjects like Chinese Language and

Liberal Studies, reviewing and revising teaching materials like Liberal Studies (all modules) and Physics (F.3), discussing teaching strategies and developing new teaching materials, like Chinese Language and

English Language, and formulating the school-based STEM education curriculum with the collaboration of Biology,

Chemistry, ICT and D&T. Most of the phase II subjects could finish their tasks as planned. Positive feedback was received from teachers. They all agreed that through collaboration meetings and discussions, they could enhance their understanding of the curriculum. Some of the subjects, like Physics, Economics and BAFS, could further proceed from compiling uniform notes to having discussions on pedagogy, including the use of examples and exercises. Through the process, an environment for professional development had been created.

(2) To enhance the culture of teachers’ collaboration by: encouraging teachers to attend relevant workshops and seminars, and inviting colleagues / panel heads to share their collaboration experience during Staff

Development (SD) Days / Staff meetings. Evaluation With the emphasis of Teachers’ Collaboration as the major concern, the acceptance of sharing and collaboration among colleagues is greater than before. During the school year, different panels had been invited by the Chairperson of the Academic Committee to share their collaboration experience during SD Days, including the following: The Chinese panel shared how to develop new writing tasks through the collaboration of panel

members and making full use of the common free lessons for collaborative lesson planning. The Physics, Chemistry and Economics panels share their experience of developing teaching

materials by incorporating daily life scenarios into the teaching curriculum. Many teachers found the sharing inspiring.

The overall feedback from colleagues was very positive. From the opinions collected in the Yellow Form, they appreciated the school’s arrangement for teachers’ collaboration. It provided a platform or a channel for colleagues to share and exchange teaching ideas and experience, and to be involved in the development of new teaching materials and the curriculum reform.

(3) To create more room for collaboration by arranging: two Staff Development Days (PM) for teachers’ collaboration (Oct 2017, and March 2018) Preference will be given to phase II subjects.

1 Phase II subjects: Liberal Studies, Chinese Language, English Language, Physics, Biology, I.S., Economics and B.A.F.S.

Page 8: School Report - PLKTYTC...Three-year School Development Plan – Major Concerns and Intended Outcomes (2016-2019) P. 4 F. Evaluation on Annual School Plan and Other Key Projects P

6

Evaluation Two collaboration days (PM session) were jointly conducted by the Staff Development Committee and the Academic Committee. Preference was given to the phase II subjects for having panel level meetings. To sum up, 21 panel level meetings of 10 subjects were held. On the two collaboration days, besides arranging panel level meetings, the Chairperson of the Academic Committee also tried to enhance professional sharing among colleagues by: introducing the concept of effective learning by presenting an overview of the strategies to

nurture effective learners, and having four panels to share their experience of designing teaching materials with the joint effort

of panel members. From the survey conducted by the Staff Development Committee, most of the teachers agreed that the programmes on the collaboration days could enrich their understanding of the related topic (100% for the 1st SD Day and 97% for the 2nd SD Day). The panel level meetings also provided a platform for professional dialogues among teachers on various learning and teaching strategies that are conducive to better learning outcomes.

Implementation plan related to outcome (b):

Students can have a healthy and balanced study life. Strategies and Evaluation

(1) Monitor the homework and assessment arrangement of the school: According to the revised homework policy and to help students have a balanced study life,

subject panels need to inspect their subject-based homework arrangement, and make amendments if needed.

AC inspects the Homework Diary regularly to ensure that subject-based homework arrangement is followed.

Evaluation AC revised the Homework Policy in August 2016. As stipulated in the policy, all panels had submitted their subject-based homework arrangement. They were also required to monitor and comply with their own policies. From their yearly evaluation, almost all panels agreed that their subject-based homework arrangement was appropriate, both in quantity and quality. Teachers’ awareness of giving homework according to the revised homework arrangement of the subject panel had been enhanced. A New Homework & Quiz Diary was used in this school year. Besides recording homework arrangement, quizzes and dictations were also recorded. It was found that junior forms could follow the instructions given and most of their homework and assessments could be recorded. However, the records of the senior forms were not that complete. To improve the situation, more reminders will be given to monitors/subject representatives. The help of form teachers will also be garnered. AC had implemented the ‘cycle day coordination’ for F.4 & F.5 in the 2nd term. Under the scheme, each subject was assigned a fixed cycle day for arranging assessments. After the half-year implementation, positive feedback was received from both teachers and students. Teachers in general welcomed the policy as it helped them plan the quizzes to be given. They were facing fewer difficulties in arranging assessments. At the same time, students could prepare for the assessments better in advance. AC will consider the possibility of extending the coordination to F.6. To have a more comprehensive understanding of whether students can have a healthy and balanced study life, AC had conducted a questionnaire at the end of each term and an in-depth interview with 10 students in May. In general, junior form students gave positive feedback in terms of the ‘amount of homework’, ‘time given’ and ‘the difficulty’. However, the situation of senior forms merited our concern. It was found that other than doing homework, attending tutorial classes, participating in extra-curricular activities and preparing quizzes also took up lots of their time after school. Although being busy, most of the students interviewed appreciated the efforts made by teachers in preparing them for examination, and the policy of the school in monitoring the workload of students. They mentioned time management and better planning and preparation are important factors for a balanced study life. All the opinions and data collected are very useful for further planning on how to help students to strive for a healthy and balanced study life.

(2) To streamline the current teaching program, including the assignments and quizzes given, so as to

strive for higher teaching efficacy and give capacity for self-directed learning by the higher achieving classes. The changes made are to be clearly indicated in the minutes and/or teaching schedules.

Page 9: School Report - PLKTYTC...Three-year School Development Plan – Major Concerns and Intended Outcomes (2016-2019) P. 4 F. Evaluation on Annual School Plan and Other Key Projects P

7

Evaluation Evaluating and revising the teaching curriculum is one of the routines of the subject panels at the end of school year. In this school year, all panels inspected and revised their curriculum. Moreover, with a view to giving more capacity for self-directed learning, some subject panels such as Physics, History and Chemistry trimmed down their curriculum and the experiments to be conducted.

Implementation plan related to outcome (c):

Students have acquired attributes of an effective learner. Strategies and Evaluation

(1) Based on the experience of 2016-172, subject panels need to review and fine-tune their subject-based effective learning strategies. The attributes and needs of students should be identified and thoroughly discussed so as to explore the subject-specific strategies to cultivate students as effective learners. Details should be clearly indicated in the programme plan. Evaluation All panels carried out their own strategies related to effective learning. Some common strategies adopted by subject panels were as follows: Using different strategies, such as online resources and the selection of appropriate teaching

materials, to arouse students’ curiosity and their desire for knowledge so that they have greater motivation in learning

Developing various kinds of study skills, such as logical thinking, note-taking and note-making, self-reflection, pros and cons analysis and the application of knowledge in daily life scenarios, in order to help students develop into independent and effective learners

Fostering students’ good learning attitude, such as reading more extensively, developing good time management, increasing awareness of the importance of learning process, punctuality and self-exploration

In the second year of implementation, all panels had fine-tuned their strategies. They had more discussions on the attributes of an effective learner to be nurtured. The overall feedback on strategies implemented was positive. In the future, AC will promote cross-panel collaboration and coordination in the implementation of effective learning within Key Learning Area or on school basis.

(2) Invite subject panels to incorporate self-learning elements into the teaching curriculum Evaluation Seven subjects incorporated self-learning elements into the teaching curriculum. Most of them integrated self-learning components into the assignments, whereas F.3 Mathematics designed a new curriculum and teaching materials on the topic ‘special lines and centres of triangle’. The topic was conducted in the ‘flipped classroom’ approach, with 13 periods, 2 Kahoot quizzes, 5 activities and 1 lesson for conducting mind-mapping activities. Students’ interest was greatly enhanced. All teachers concerned agreed that ‘flipped classroom’ was very good for training students’ independent learning skills.

(3) The KLA leaders will continue their work of examining the plans and evaluation submitted by the panel heads. Ways can be explored to enhance their roles in fostering cross-panel collaboration. Evaluation KLA leaders worked well in monitoring the work of the panels under their supervision. Programme plans and evaluation of each term were inspected for coordination. In the future, they could play a greater role in developing common attributes within the same KLA and coordinating strategies across panels.

2 Starting from 2016-17, each subject has tried at least one or more of the following strategies in nurturing students the attributes of an effective learner: Cultivate good learning habits among students. Help students acquire and develop skills and habits of self-learning through e-learning development. Adopt strategies in lessons for effective learning. Conduct co-planning activities, focusing on engaging students in active learning activities (e.g. questioning) Increase self-learning components in assignments. Design a curriculum or teaching materials that can arouse students’ desire for knowledge.

Page 10: School Report - PLKTYTC...Three-year School Development Plan – Major Concerns and Intended Outcomes (2016-2019) P. 4 F. Evaluation on Annual School Plan and Other Key Projects P

8

(4) Invite ITC/SDC to conduct workshop on using new Apps or IT tools Evaluation After introducing Nearpod, Schoology and other online learning software last year, more panels were found more willing to use mobile and online learning in lessons this year. From the statistics of Information Technology Committee, 10 panels had used tablets in their lessons. The School Life Survey done by Students’ Union also reflected that over 90% students agreed that e-learning approaches had been effective in raising their learning effectiveness. In the future, with more hardware purchased and better infrastructure established, more lesson time will be conducted in e-learning approach.

(5) Arrange teachers’ sharing on cultivating good learning habits or effective learning during SD Days / staff meetings Evaluation The Chairperson of the Academic Committee had arranged four panel heads, namely, Economics, Chemistry, Physics and Chinese Language, to share their practices of developing effective learning strategies for their students. Positive feedback was received from the colleagues. From the survey conducted by SDC, almost all colleagues (100% for the 1st SD Day and 97% for the 2nd SD Day) agreed the sharing was useful for their work.

(6) Provide students with more opportunities to participate in self-directed learning related activities: Learning programmes organized by external organizations, such as

- ‘Gifted’ programme by HKAGE, and - programmes offered by universities.

Open quizzes and assessments, such as - Science Assessment Test, - Secondary School Mathematics and Science Competition (SSMSC), and - Australian National Chemistry Quiz (H.K. Section).

Evaluation 13 students were enrolled at the Enhancement Programme of HKAGE, in the fields of Leadership, Humanities, Science and Mathematics. They were entitled to join various kinds of study programmes offered by the institution. Besides, the high achievers were given self-learning opportunities to participate in career broadening programmes held by local universities. Throughout the year, there were 98 students enrolled in 13 university programmes, related to the fields of Medicine and Health, Engineering and Business Studies. Students were encouraged to participate in the following self-learning competitions, such as Secondary School Mathematics & Science Competition (SSMSC 2018), “Chemists Online” Self-study Award Scheme, 2018 Science Assessment Test, and Australian National Chemistry Quiz (ANCQ-H.K. Section) 2018. To sum up, 60 junior form students and 184 senior form students were engaged in these self-learning competitions. Some of them attained the achievement of High Distinction and/or Medal. All these learning activities could serve the purpose of developing students’ self-directed learning habits.

(7) To disseminate good practices of outstanding self-learners, or to hold academic talks about self-directed learning for students Evaluation Under the High Achievers Scheme, two sharing sessions by alumni were arranged for senior form students. One of them was conducted by university undergraduates with a view to disseminating effective learning skills, and introducing how to prepare for the JUPAS subject selection, whereas the other one was by the graduates in different career fields. Through the sessions, students were given a wider perspective and could get better prepared for their future careers. Besides, an academic visit to HKU-Shenzhen Hospital was arranged for students interested in medical related studies. All these programmes were well received by the participants.

Major concern 2: To instill positive values in students

Strategies and Evaluation (1) Instill positive values in students through adopting a whole-school approach

Evaluation Posters with words of wisdom were renewed and displayed in school campus to instill positive

values in students. Experience and views on positive values were shared by Civic Education Student Ambassadors

and teachers on Friday mornings during the ‘Good morning TYT’ sessions. Stories on ‘mutual respect and sense of responsibility’ were shared.

As positive reinforcement, awards were granted in the morning assembly to classes with outstanding performance in submission of homework, punctuality and uniform and appearance.

Guest speakers, Ms. Tang Yan Lan and Mr. Lau Yan Chi, were invited by the Guidance Committee to share their experiences with junior and senior form students respectively. Ms. Tang was one of the Hong Kong Top Ten Regeneration Warriors 2011 while Mr. Lau shared his never-give-up spirit by telling his real-life story of how to overcome congenital limitation and won the gold medal in the Athens Paralympics.

An inter-class board display competition with the theme ‘positive values’ was conducted by the Civic Education Committee. Students’ performance was satisfactory and well-chosen words of wisdom of individual classes were uploaded to the school webpage

Class teachers were invited to share their good practices in strengthening students’ self-discipline and sense of responsibility in class teacher meetings.

(2) Help students acquire and develop goal-setting skills by implementing careers education programmes Evaluation Life planning education activities with the focus on goal-setting were arranged for senior form students in form teacher periods. Students were encouraged to evaluate their personal strengths and develop their own study and career paths. Moreover, talks and workshops were held to introduce multiple pathways in tertiary education and careers and guided visits to tertiary institutions were conducted. These activities enriched students’ knowledge about the study programmes and helped them develop their skills of goal-setting and life planning.

(3) Foster positive values in students through implementing leadership training camps and setting up preventive groups Evaluation A 3-day leadership training camp was organized by the Extra-curricular Activities Committee for student leaders in order to strengthen their self-discipline and sense of responsibility. The camp focused on practical skills in activity planning in school and most students could apply what they had learnt in their own working situations. In addition, training camps and activities were provided to prefects, Big Brothers and Sisters and Civic Education Student Ambassadors to foster their leadership skills and sense of responsibility. Furthermore, two preventive groups, one for F.2 girls and another for F.2 boys, were formed by the Guidance Committee and the school social worker. Workshops and activities including experience sharing and community service helped cheer up student participants, enhance their self-image and strengthen their sense of responsibility.

(4) Strengthen the sense of belonging of students towards keeping the campus clean and tidy Evaluation Guidelines on keeping the campus clean and tidy were set and delivered to students and teachers by the Civic Education Committee. Regulations were enforced by the Disciplinary Committee and students violating the regulations were educated. Students’ self-discipline and sense of responsibility were further enhanced.

Page 12: School Report - PLKTYTC...Three-year School Development Plan – Major Concerns and Intended Outcomes (2016-2019) P. 4 F. Evaluation on Annual School Plan and Other Key Projects P

10

(5) Improve the self-discipline and sense of responsibility of students through evaluating, revising and

implementing the Student Award Scheme (SAS) and the policy on improper / nil-submission of homework Evaluation The SAS, which encourages students to set their own goals and aims at recognizing students’

good performance in self-discipline and sense of responsibility, was revised with the joint effort of the Civic Education Committee, the Disciplinary Committee and the Guidance Committee. This year, 285 students were awarded.

The policy on improper / nil-submission of homework was revised. Clear guidelines in compliance with the homework policy of the Academic Committee were set so that they could be strictly enforced by subject teachers.

Guidance Committee Strategies and Evaluation

(1) Joyful@School Campaign (QEF) (i) In order to promote students’ participation in activities related to mental health and to raise

anti-adversity ability of students, the committee had successfully applied for the Quality Education Fund with YWCA and joined the Joyful@School Campaign.

(ii) A survey for all F.2 students had been conducted in early November. 11 students who had negative emotions were identified. Two preventive groups (10 boys and 11 girls) were formed. Activities included holding personal growth workshops and an adventure camp, visiting Dialogue in the Dark and The Hong Kong Society for the Blind, providing volunteer service for the visually impaired and the children in YWCA Butterfly Bay Integrated Social Services Centre.

(iii) Individual counseling was given to all identified students by the social workers from YWCA. (iv) Two assemblies on positive attitude towards life were held for F.1- F.5 students in November. The

guest speaker, Ms. Tang Yan Lan, the Hong Kong Top Ten Regeneration Warrior 2011 shared her experience when facing adversities and encouraged students to have a breakthrough from their self-restriction. Mr. Lau Yan Chi, was also invited to share his never-give-up spirit by telling his real-life story of how to overcome congenital limitation and won the gold medal in the Athens Paralympics.

(v) A workshop for all teaching staff on mental health of teenagers was held on the Staff Development Day. The guest speaker was Dr. Leung Sze-ming, Samuel.

(vi) A parents’ talk on emotional education will be held in September.

Evaluation The activities launched in the preventive groups gave all participants a remarkable experience.

According to the findings of the questionnaire, all student participants agreed that the program taught them to treasure their life and to appreciate and feel grateful to the things and people in their daily life, as well as increased their ability to face adversities.

Students expressed that the two assemblies were inspiring. The whole atmosphere was warm during the assemblies. According to the findings of the questionnaire, students showed that the greatest benefit to them was that they realized they had to face adversities positively, persistently and unrelentingly so as to achieve their goals.

The overall campaign targeted all stakeholders, including students, teachers and parents, which helped to increase their awareness of mental health and to raise students’ anti-adversity ability.

(2) Volunteer services in Dongguan (莞香情 ∙東莞莞香農舍體驗義工服務) 15 F.3 and F.4 students participated in the activity. The program was launched in three stages:

- In the first stage, preparatory workshops were held. The participants comprehended the purpose of the program and did preparatory work.

- In the second stage, the participants implemented their planning. They visited some ex-leprosy elderly patients in Dongguan from 30th September to 1st October. The group played games with the elderly and held night parties for them.

- In the third stage, the participants shared what they had experienced with other students at school.

Evaluation The trip was inspiring and touching for students. As most of the elderly were physically disabled,

some of them were abandoned by their families and society and encountered many difficulties in their lives. However, they were able to deal with them positively. The student participants learned to treasure their lives. A message of love and care was delivered to the elderly patients through the volunteer work. The group was devoted to the activities and they learned a lot.

A video about the visit was shown during the Amazing Video time. The participants shared their experiences in the morning assembly. They also made a board exhibition to introduce the activities and share what they had learnt. They organized an experiential activity tasting the life difficulties of the disabled for F.1 students in February. A collection of experience sharing and personal reflection of the participants was distributed to the whole school to spread a positive message to the students.

L. Conclusion

The school year 2017-2018 was indeed a very fruitful one. For instance, 96.2% of our Form 6 graduates were successfully admitted to local universities and tertiary institutes through JUPAS.

Besides, our school dance teams not only obtained 9 Honours Awards in Hong Kong Schools Dance Festival but the Modern Dance Team also won the Overall Championship while the Chinese Dance Team got the Overall Third Prize. Moreover, the Modern Dance Team was greatly honoured to grab the Bauhinia Cup International Championship.

Furthermore, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the unfailing support given by Po

Leung Kuk, the Education Bureau, Madam Lee King Fan, alumni and parents, which helped the school to translate its mission into reality.

Last but not least, special thanks were due to Dr Pai Ming Chu Pearl, Independent Manager of the school’s Incorporated Management Committee, for squeezing time from her very tight schedule to arrange a clinical attachment to the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital for our students . The visit was very rewarding and it greatly enhanced their horizons.

Looking ahead, as the tradition of the school, we will continue to strive for the best for our students and endeavor to scale new heights in the years to come.

Appendix I

Synopsis

(2017-2018) Principal

Mr. Cheung Ka Pong Po Leung Kuk Tang Yuk Tien College was founded in 1987, donated by Madam Lee King Fan

in memory of her late mother, Madam Tang Yuk Tien. We are greatly honoured that Madam Lee's daughter, Dr Pai Ming Chu Pearl, has been an Independent Manager of the Incorporated Management Committee of the school since April, 2014. On the other hand, Mr Tam Chun Kit, a practising Barrister-at-Law, has become an Alumni Manager since April, 2015.

The school is an aided secondary school using English as the medium of instruction. It has

been striving to provide an all-round education for students and to help them develop their potential to the full, and is highly sought after by parents in the district. It operated 25 classes covering Form 1 to Form 6. The enrolment was 766 and the total number of teaching and non-teaching staff was 85.

Academic Achievements

Our students had achieved very good results in HKDSE Examination 2018. The percentage of students obtaining level 5 or above in all subjects was 34.1% and the percentage of students obtaining level 2 or above was 99.9%. Student Mak Lok Wai got the best individual result. He obtained 5(5**), 2(5*) and 1(5). And 3 high fliers attained the results of 3(5**) or above. Besides, we are delighted that 96.2% of our F.6 graduates were successfully admitted to local universities and tertiary institutes through JUPAS, which hit a record high of the school. Among them, 16 were admitted to HKU, 24 to CUHK, 7 to HKUST and 24 to Poly U. which accounted for 53.8% of our F.6 graduates. All these outstanding achievements indicated not only the hard work of our students but also the great effort of our teachers in preparing them for the public examination.

Discipline, Guidance and Civic Education

The school had always laid great emphasis on fostering moral values and personality development on the part of students. This year, focus was placed on helping students to develop a purpose-driven attitude, enhancing students’ self-discipline and improving their sense of responsibility. A wide range of programs had been held by the committees concerned accordingly.

First and foremost, a strict but fair and efficient system to maintain school discipline had been established by the Disciplinary Committee. The Student Award Scheme was held to foster students to be more proactive and strive for self-improvement. This year, 285 awards were granted. In addition, 44 conduct awards, 28 service awards, 84 credits and 586 merits were presented while conduct marks were added to the well-behaved students.

Both individual and group counseling were provided by the Guidance Committee to students with the support of the school social worker and the educational psychologist. Furthermore, the committee had successfully applied for the Quality Education Fund ($200,000) with YWCA and joined the Joyful@School Campaign. The objectives of the campaign were to identify those students in need, increased the awareness of mental health among students, teachers and parents and to raise students’ anti-adversity ability. Other programs like the BBS Scheme, Project of Healthy Teenager, talks on sex education, workshops on time management and various preventive mass programs were held to facilitate students’ personality growth, foster proper moral values and to help them deal with challenges proactively. In addition, a Voluntary Service Training Scheme was organized for Form 2 by the Liberal Studies and Civic Education Panel. Students were required to provide voluntary service like paying visits to the aged and the mentally retarded. The Scheme had enabled them to have a better understanding of what happiness means and learn to be thankful for what they had. It also spurred them to take the initiative to show their concern for and render help to the needy and the underprivileged. Talks, workshops, visits to companies and universities, and participation in university summer programs were promoted by the Careers Committee to help students acquire a much deeper self-understanding and facilitate their goal setting and career mapping. For instance, some F.4 students joined the Business-School Partnership Programme with Link Asset Management Limited. Besides, job shadow programmes were organized for F.4-6 students. For instance, a number of F.5 and F.6 students had a taste of the medical professions at HKU-Shenzhen Hospital, while some F.4 and F.5 students experienced media profession at Bloomberg through joining a JA job shadow programme. Students had benefited substantially from these programmes. To sharpen students’ sense of responsibility, heighten their social awareness and foster them to behave in a more civilized way, programs like Current Affairs Marathon, Environmental Protection Scheme, the Most Respectful Student Election, Salute to Teachers Day, Bulletin Board Display Competition and Blood Donation Day were organized by the Civic Education Committee. Besides, a Form Teachers’ Guidance Scheme was organized to provide pastoral care for students with special needs. Furthermore, talks, workshops, principal-parent conferences, and activities like picnics, tai chi, calligraphy and painting classes were held by the Parent-Teacher Association.

Extra-curricular Activities To nurture students’ multiple intelligence, a wide spectrum of extra-curricular activities were run by the Pupils’ Association, the 4 Houses, 20 school teams as well as 14 clubs and societies. The school’s great effort in developing students’ potential had yielded prominent results in various elections and competitions.
