Selwyn residents and visitors are being asked to show caution as dry conditions and bad behaviour continue to keep firefighters busy.

Campers lighting illegal fires in Chamberlains Ford and Coes Ford sparked multiple callouts for fire-

fighters and police on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Constable Aaron Reid of Leeston police said there had been up to 200 people camping at Coes Ford and several hundred at Chamberlains Ford.

Deputy principal rural fire offi-cer Douglas Marshall said “young males” lighting fires at the popular

camping sites was always a problem at this time of year which was un-fortunate as it wasted firefighters’ time.

Constable Reid said while the fires had been the biggest problem, police had dealt with a range of drunk and disorderly behaviour is-sues at the campsites.

“It’s just people unwinding but

unwinding too much and unwind-ing their brains, I reckon.”

Temperatures are expected to ease down from the high-20s of the last few days to around 20 deg C for the next three days, withsome isolated showers mainly around the foothills of the South-ern Alps.

I, like many others in the greater West Melton area, do not receive cellphone cover and I place the blame for this square-ly at the door of a few residents who apparently are opposed to progress and in my view need to get over themselves for the greater good of the district.

The earth revolves around the sun not around them and the excuses in my view are light on substantial facts. I wonder if their reasons for objections would stand up for a robust de-bate, ie property values, visual amenities and so on.

In regards to possible health issues of a cellphone tower, I will not even go there. Too emotional for many to debate logically and no conclusive evi-dence to support opposing sides of the argument one might put forward. Facts and fiction are well and truly intertwined on the health issues of cell towers.

The protesters need to em-brace change and listen to what the greater community wants and allow our cellphone provid-ers to supply reasonable infra-structure that allows all persons to have access to essential, edu-cational and possibly even life-saving technology.

For the miserly measurement of 7m, and that really is the crux of the matter, I along with many others, who I am sure rely

on telecommunications to ef-fectively run their businesses from home, have been denied a network coverage that has today become the norm rather than the exception.

Would cellphone coverage in the 21st century not fall into the category of essential services? I believe it is only the start of ex-citing technology that will affect all us in our daily lives.

I have been denied such fu-ture opportunities solely be-cause of the objectors.

I didn’t think there was ever any doubt that a cell tower would be erected on the site so the objectives of those that op-posed such and the reasons they put forward in many instances, held no relevance.

However, I do have a solu-

tion. Spark and Vodafone, please come and talk to me if you want a secure site. You can have a choice within 4ha for a potential tower location if it works for you. Between us we can make it happen if your in-terest is there.

I drive looking through the windscreen not my rear vision mirror, with a deal maker not deal breaker attitude.

To say as your headline (De-cember 16) stated “coverage frustrates West Melton cell us-ers” is an understatement.

The sooner the Government gets on to changing parts of the Resource Management Act that relate to cell tower height so there cannot be a repeat of this outcome, cannot come quick enough for me.

Mr Marshall said the district would stay in a restricted season for the time being, meaning fires could be lit only with a fire per-mit. However, the district coun-cil would continue to monitor conditions and consider impos-ing a prohibited fire season if things did not improve.

A prohibited fire season would mean existing permits would be

cancelled and a special permit would have to be obtained by anyone wishing to light a fire.

Mr Marshall said Selwyn fire-fighters had already been busy over the holiday period.

Although most of the fires have been minor, a significant blaze on Chattertons Rd prop-erty on December 15 required 15 fire trucks and tankers to put it out. Like many recent smaller fires, that had involved a former controlled burn which flared up again.

Rolleston fire chief Nigel Lil-

ley said the brigade was on high alert and not expecting to get any help from the weather in the near future.

He said stupidity was the main problem at this time of year, with people lighting fires when they shouldn’t and setting off fire-works.

“We had one a couple of days ago that probably started from a firework and that took out a couple of paddocks but we were just lucky it wasn’t so windy that day and we managed to put it out pretty quick.”

He urged anyone who saw smoke to not hesitate and call 111 immediately.

Mr Marshall called on resi-dents and holidaymakers to be extra vigilant. He said anyone using machinery should con-sider if they really needed to use it and if so, they should use it in a cooler part of the day.

“We’re also reminding holi-daymakers that no fires are al-lowed in council reserves, and the only barbecues able to be used in reserves are gas barbe-cues.”

A reshuffle of the Metro network has led some Selwyn residents to seek clarification about the buses being used in the Lincoln area.

This comes after Environment Canterbury received a petition from bus users asking for the re-cently cancelled number 81 Lin-coln to City Express service to be reinstated.

The petition, by Leeston resi-dent Kathy Fielding, received 55 signatures but ECan have said the service is unlikely to be reinstated due to low usage.

The new bus network features four high-frequency Metro Lines which aim to provide quicker travel across the city.

ECan’s public transport manag-er David Stenhouse said because of the bus route changes in the area services may look substan-tially different than they used to.

“The Lincoln area used to have Selwyn Star buses, which were yel-low in colour,” he said.

He said with the reorganisation of the network the Selwyn Star brand had to be replaced, because the buses from Lincoln and Rolleston now travelled all the way to New Brighton and Parklands.

Mr Stenhouse said those buses had been reassigned to the Yellow Line to reduce bus painting costs.

Buses on the 80 and 820 Lincoln services were operated by partner service Go Bus.

The new Yellow Line would con-tinue as a half-hourly service from The Hub Hornby to Templeton

and Rolleston.The Yellow Line would be a

combination of the previous 88 (Rolleston – CPIT) and the 5 (New Brighton – Hornby) routes.

A new service from Lincoln, the 80, would travel directly down Springs Rd, Blenheim Rd and Riccarton Rd, past Westfield Ric-carton into the city and on to the northeast.

This service had replaced the previous 81 and 40 services.

The extended 820 Lincoln – Burnham route now covered the Izone Business Park, Selwyn

Aquatic Centre, and the new Far-ringdon subdivision, to Lincoln.

Beginning next year, new school services would also be introduced to bring Lincoln and Prebbleton based students to the schools in the Upper Riccarton area includ-ing Riccarton High School, St Thomas’, Villa Maria, Kirkwood Intermediate and close to Middle-ton Grange School.

Mr Stenhouse said the new school service will take the school demand from the 80 service, leav-ing more space for commuters in peak time.

The new school service routes are now available at metroinfo.co.nz, and timetables will be avail-able mid-January.

“Our city has changed, and so must we,” Mr Stenhouse said.

County Cavan in Ireland, had been living in Southbridge since arriving in New Zealand on a working visa 18 months ago.

He socialised at the hotel. But he had not been drinking there prior to Friday’s crash.

His uncle was expected to fly in from the United States today to col-lect the body.

Mr Cadden had been working for Ellesmere Agricultural Ltd as a driver and machinery operator. Managing director Tim Ridgen said staff were “very, very upset” by what had happened to Mr Cadden.

Mr Ridgen and several of Mr Cadden’s friends, who often drank with him at the pub, presented Mr Guenole with a Cavan rugby club jersey on Sunday. It was a token of thanks after Mr Guenole provided drinks on the house the night be-fore when the friends had come down to remember Mr Cadden.

Mr Guenole, who remembered Mr Cadden as the “life of the party” said the jersey would hang on the pub wall next to the sports trophies.

Ellesmere Agricultural Ltd yester-day released a statement describing Mr Cadden as a trustworthy, reliable and highly valued member of the team who had carried out his work to exceptionally high standards.

“He will be very much missed by all his friends and colleagues and our thoughts are with his family,” the statement said.

Mr Cadden’s uncle was expected to leave on Wednesday if the coro-nor had released the body by then.

NICKY DAWSON remembers her husband Greg as a man who put 150 per cent into everything he did.

They were married for 30 years and have two grown up children, Michaela and Creighton.

Just seven weeks before he died, Greg had walked Michaela – or Floss as he called her – down the aisle; a tremendously proud mo-ment for the affable and very popu-lar 54-year-old.

So popular was the Weedons chicken farmer, nearly 1000 people went to his funeral – an undeniable mark of the man.

Said Mrs Dawson: “It was such a shock. I thought he was invincible. He was in such good health and he loved diving with a passion. He put 150 per cent in to it, he always did.”

On the morning of December 19, Mrs Dawson cooked her husband french toast and bacon for break-fast before heading out to Akaroa.

Creighton, 20, and a family friend Brendon Woods or “Woodsy” went with them heading off into the sunshine and Akaroa’s choppy waves around 2.30pm.

Sea spray soaked everyone on board, and Greg, who was at the helm of the boat, thought it hilari-ous, son Creighton said.

“He was the only one in a wet-suit, the rest of us were all wearing our clothes.”

“Nobody got angry, we all just

laughed,” Mrs Dawson added.At around 4pm the group

reached a popular diving spot near Whakamoa Reef, where Greg planned to catch some crayfish.

He went down at 4pm, with Creighton planning to join him on the second dive.

At 4.25pm Greg surfaced, con-scious, but something was obvi-ously wrong.

He was pulled out of the water and rushed to the Akaroa wharf,

but he did not survive.The family do not want to talk

about the accident. They say they are waiting for the Coroner’s re-port.

The death was a huge shock to the diving community that knew him, Mrs Dawson said.

“They told me: ‘He was such a good diver.’ It’s just so tragic.”

He used to love entertaining large groups of friends at the Daw-son’s family home.

“I used to come over to chat to mum and dad and half of Weedons would be there,” daughter Michae-la said, laughing.

“Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night he’d have people over watching the rugby or catching up and he’d be cooking for them all.”

Mrs Dawson said that everyone who met Greg liked him.

The couple celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in March.

“It was our best anniversary ever. He took me into town and we stayed the night at the same place where we had our honeymoon. It used to be an Autolodge but we stayed at the closest possible – the Pavillions,” Mrs Dawson said.

She first met her husband at a woolshed party in 1980.

“It was just a country party, and some girls from school were going so I went. I was dressed up like a townie hairdresser – black jacket, black pants, white shirt. He was wearing jeans. I knew he was spe-cial.”

The two spent the evening talk-ing and dancing – “if that’s what you could call his movements,” Mrs Dawson said, laughing. She was 16, he was 19.

They were married four years later. Michaela was born five years into their marriage, and straighta-way Greg gave her a pet name, Floss.

“He said when I named her: ‘I don’t know how to spell, let alone say it. It’ll just be Floss’,” Mrs Daw-son said.

Another five years later, their son Creighton was born.

Just over two months ago, Greg gave ‘Floss’ away at her wedding.

Michaela said it was very lucky the wedding was planned in time.

“I’m very pleased he was there.”Her mother said “he was so

proud.”She plans to keep the fam-

ily home, especially treasuring her husband’s man cave.

“Nothing is changing except his presence being there, physically. He has his own man cave and it’s just so Gregory. You can just feel him there. Everyone says it’s the best room of the house.”

The man cave has an open fire, lots of wood, old farming tools, his father’s old mining hat and a “love-ly glass fridge full of DB.”

As his obituary reads: “A truly amazing, hard-working man who will forever be missed, who thoroughly earnt every DB he drank.”

150 per centGetting to grips with dry and dusty sub-continental pitches is one of the biggest challenges faced by New Zealand cricketers, but they could be about to receive a boost.

New Zealand Cricket wants to build an indoor training centre in Lincoln, to help players prepare for overseas tours which take place during our winter.

Pitches at the facility will be prepared to order, using different

types of clay to simulate condi-tions the Black Caps can expect to find in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

They could also theoretically replicate the types of pitches in England, but tours there usually include plenty of warm-up fix-tures, and the conditions aren’t as demanding as those found in Asia.

The need for a facility in which to prepare during winter is a

uniquely New Zealand problem; Australia makes use of pitches in Brisbane and Darwin and South Africa prepares in the high-veldt cities of Pretoria and Johannes-burg, while we have no similar region.

Full plans for the facility are set to be produced within the next couple of months, with New Zea-land’s dividend from the upcom-ing World Cup to provide the ini-tial funding.

Rolleston sprintcar driver Jamie Duff will make his first appearance of the season this Saturday night at Ruapuna Speedway when he contests the 13th annual Gold Cup.

The event kicks off a three-night Sprintweek.

A strong North Island contingent has entered the race, with Auckland’s New Zealand ‘test team’ drivers Jamie McDonald and Dean Brindle, last year’s Gold Cup winner Jamie Larson from Kapiti, New Plymouth legend Skinny Colson and Aucklanders Daniel Eggleton and Ray Griffen among the 20-car entry list for the 25-lap race.

Several South Island drivers are in a race against time to be ready after a frenetic two nights of racing at Cromwell over the holiday pe-riod including local favourite Ray Baughan who looked destined to win his first South Island title after trying for 17 years, before he with-drew when the Mopar powerplant in his car blew.

Earlier in the week Baughan had won the War of the Wings round at Cromwell and was showing top form.

The South Island crown was again won by Cromwell’s Jason Scott, however, Scott has racing commitments in the North Island and is unlikely to appear in any of the Sprintweek events.

One local driver who will carry some momentum into the series

is rookie Shaun Ashton who led the championship race before pull-ing out with a suspension fauilure. Ashton proved that in spite of his

relative lack of sprintcar experi-ence, that he was unphased by the step-up in competition.

Sprintweek continues on

Wednesday night with the Salute to Goodie race, and then on the fol-lowing Saturday the New Zealand Sprintcar Grand Prix is at stake.

If holidaying at home or visiting the district, day trips can be a great way to enjoy and experience.

Banks Peninsula offers views, bays, cafés, walking tracks, picnic spots and interesting sites. Popular picnic and swimming bays in Lyttelton Harbour include Corsair, Cass and Camp bays and Diamond Harbour. Orton Bradley Park has walking tracks, camping and

space for groups to gather with a golf course next door.

Heading over the hill from Little River, the motorist can travel down into Akaroa Harbour or go left and drive to an eastern bay – good places to visit on a nor’west day.

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre is a great place to visit this summer. Visit us to get fit, have some family fun, or enjoy a refreshing swim in the hot weather. We’re at 71 Broadlands Drive, off Goulds Rd in Rolleston.

The Aquatic Centre is lots of fun for littlies and a great way to keep your kids entertained over summer. We have a toddler’s pool, a leisure pool and a lazy river which swirls around like a whirlpool. On Sundays between 2-4pm we have Sunday Funday - inflatables for the kids to climb on.

Swimming is great exercise for adults. It’s cool, refreshing and is great for stress relief. Or if you prefer the warm hydrotherapy pool for exercising or rehabilitation – it’s available for all adults. Best of all, over summer when it’s too hot for other forms of exercise, too windy or even raining, you can always hit the pool.

We’re open from 6am–9pm Monday to Friday and 8am–8pm Saturdays and Sundays and between Friday 27 December – Sunday 5 January. We are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

A smaller wader is the black and white pied stilt while pukekos are likely to be found in the tussock feeding on roots that they pull out of the ground with their feet.

also common. � e females have chestnut and white heads while the males are mostly shiny black.

Larger are Canada geese. � ey may need fending o� when picnicking as like the black swan are persistent and may peck at your ankles.

If travelling to Little River, stop at Lake Forsyth to look for an Australasian crested grebe. � ese diving water birds have long dagger-shaped bills, elongated crowns and a little chestnut colour on their heads.

Make a game of spotting and identifying the wildlife to add another dimension to your day out.

Lake Ellesmere is accessed from a number of places. It is popular for boating, fi shing,

blokarting or stopping for a picnic, games and a walk. While there, check out the wildlife.

By Tod PalenskiPIES, CRUMBLES, stewed and served with ice-cream; rhubarb is the dessert lover’s friend.

Which is actually quite surprising when you think about how tangy and tart it tastes on its own. But com-bined with a sweet pudding it’s the perfect combination.

And if you’re partial to more than an occasional dessert (like I am), you’ll love the fact that hand-planted rhubarb grows like wildfire – giving you big bang for your buck.

If that sounds like the sweet deal you’re after, grab some rhubarb seedlings. Before you get planting, you need to have the right conditions in place – rhubarb likes a sunny spot with soil that’s rich and moist, not to mention plenty of space to flourish.

I should also tell you that it’ll be there for the long haul, so it’s best planted at the back of your garden so as not to interfere with your other crops.

Once you’ve found your spot, dig a hole approximately 3cm deep and insert your seedling. You’ll be pleased to know you don’t need to be fussy about spacing or neat rows – your gi-ant rhubarb will grow well no matter where it’s placed. Just make sure you use a mulch, like grass clippings, and ensure your plant has access to plenty of fertiliser – a few extra nutrients helps our ‘gross feeder’ stay healthy

and produce a good crop.As they say, all good things take

time and patience is certainly the key to this plant. Rhubarb needs time to develop so resist the urge to pick any stalks in its first year.

As the seasons pass, you’ll notice the plant develop large leaves, which I think adds a nice bit of drama to your garden; just mind you don’t eat them as they are, in fact, toxic. Also watch out for caterpillars and aphids.

Once you’re finally ready to har-vest, make sure you pick the outside stems first, gently pulling or twist-ing the base. Don’t chop them with a knife as the cut ends can rot and damage the crown.

Look after your plants and they’ll pay you back with a lifetime of bounty (just divide the crowns every few years to keep them flourishing). And for the real taste test, the proof is, of course, in the pudding. Enjoy.

GARDENING

As we move through summer, keep the garden looking fresh for your outdoor enjoyment.

1. Conserve water – While we may not reach Australian levels of urgency about water short-ages, the eco-messages are just going to get tougher from now on. Take a good look at how you use water in your garden and make some plans. This might be the year you invest in a rainwater tank to capture all that free wet stuff, and to review the sprinkler system timing and spacing (so you don’t waste water spraying paths and so forth). Whatever your method, be sparing with the frequency of watering: established plants need only 30 minutes of water once or twice a week, vegetables more. Check the soil at 10cm first.

2. Mulch to save work – Mulch is the instant makeover. It suppresses weeds, makes a tired garden look fresh and slows wa-ter evaporation. But only apply it once the soil is good and wet, as otherwise it will not help your plants. Leave breathing room around trunks and shrubs to avoid fungus infections.

3. Plant locally – Native plants (from your part of the country) are perfectly adapted to your local sun, rain and wind conditions, so they look after

themselves. The huge fashion for natives is not just about looks, it is about reducing hard work.

4. Mow lightly – In the sum-mer lawns do best when the grass is longer (about 25-30mm). The soil and roots are shaded so the lawn does not get sunburnt and more moisture is retained. If you can, leave clippings on the lawn to help conserve soil moisture and feed it.

5. Add water – There is nothing like water to enhance a garden. While a full-scale water feature can get expensive, garden centres now sell small plug-and-

go bubbling water bowls and sculptures which do not need elaborate construction. Add a few plants and you have a tiny tropical paradise.

6. Create shady spots – If your deck gets the full blaze of sun, look at creating a second-ary area for relaxing in the heat of the day. Deciduous trees may take a while to grow, but pergolas with removable shade sails and market umbrellas that hang from a wall or fence are good sum-mer solutions that can be packed away when you need to soak up winter rays.

If you weighed up the difference between Fair Dinkum brand sheds and others on

the market, you would literally feel it. Fair Dinkum kitsets are 30 per cent heavier than many other brands, and that is because they are made from a thicker grade of steel, Christchurch franchise owner Brent Collins says.

THERE’S A bit of a buzz in the air at the local Mercedes-Benz dealer-ship.

Not only are they doing well in terms of luxury car sales, but a new C-Class series has arrived and it is an exciting car which is filled with technology and fea-tures.

The variant this evaluation focuses on is the entry-level model into the C-Class sedan and estate range, the C200. At $71,900 (estate $74,900) it is also an affordable premium car.

There are several four-cylinder engine options in the C-Class range – petrol and diesel. The C200 is petrol powered and has a 2-litre, turbocharged engine which is rated at 135kW and 300Nm.

The engine is matched to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The combination is smooth and strong, shifts are ushered in almost seamlessly, and given the number of ratios there is gearing for every conceivable situation.

Acceleration is forceful and you would expect that from Mercedes-Benz. It claims a 7.3sec standstill to 100km/h time, an 80km/h to 120km/h time of 6sec is also achievable. The C-Class in this form isn’t overly fast but it is quick enough, and it gobbles up high-way kilometres effortlessly, its bal-ance and poise is remarkable and as you drive you feel so much part of the car.

It also has fuel efficiency that you would expect in today’s motoring environment. Mercedes-Benz also claims a six-litre per 100km (47mpg) combined cycle figure; the test car constantly list-ed close to that, and at 100km/h the trip computer readout sits around 5l/100km (57mpg) with the engine turning over at just

1800rpm in top gear.If you analyse the technical

aspects of these figures and com-bine them with the brilliance of the vehicle as a whole, the C-Class is a seriously special car. Well, at

the price it has to be and it won’t disappoint. It also comes with specification you, as a buyer, can choose depending on need.

The test car was reasonably well specced which pumps up

the price a little ($83,860), but features I like include panoramic roof, head-up display and satellite navigation.

What I particularly liked about the interior of the new C is the touch pad controller which is mounted in the central console between the two front seats. It is intuitive and will respond to fin-gertip writing commands.

This is just one new-age feature on the C-Class, another I like is the air suspension which has been engineered into the car. It helps promote a solid, stable ride which also enhances comfort. Even though it is a compact car, the C-Class is user-friendly and is designed to look after its occu-pants.

Another element which deserves a mention is the energy regeneration system, it replaces energy under deceleration and encourages less fuel use. Gauges on the dash readout remind the

driver to ease the throttle to be more energy efficient.

The C-Class drives through the rear wheels and that in itself imparts an involving driving expe-rience. There is a secure feel to the road and that along with steering that is decisive adds to accuracy when presented with a quick cor-ner or two.

I don’t normally take premium cars over the Summit Rd fromthe Sign of the Kiwi but I had a Trade Me item to drop off on Dyers Pass Rd so I took the opportunity to put the C-Class through the twists and challenges to Gebbies Pass.

There are several chassis settings you can choose from asa driver and, to be honest, I couldn’t find a lot of difference between comfort and sport modes, the body balance is controlled in each setting and in-cabin refinement isn’t compromised in any setting. I’m sure a lot of that is to do with the air suspension elements.

Just recently I was in the United States and the new C-Class had just landed there. I was fortunate enough to be seated in the rear of one as a prestige shuttle service, with two other adults. Being the smallest I was sitting in the mid-dle but still had a comfortable journey on the uneven surfaces of the roads of Los Angeles.

And if you take into account the similar state of Christchurch’s roads then the C-Class is optimised to provide a premium ride. The C-Class range at present accounts for nine models, I’m hoping an estate will filter through to me at some point soon.
