Selwyn’s under-pressure roading network has received a much need-ed maintenance funding boost with the New Zealand Transport Agency announcing it will provide an extra $530,000 over the next 12 months.

The investment comes after persistent pressure from the dis-trict council, which has repeatedly called for more NZTA funding over the last few years, and dissat-isfaction from residents over the state of the district’s roads.

This year, for the second year in a row, the district council allocated an extra $1 million to fund extra road resealing and road recon-

struction work beyond what its previous funding allocations from NZTA could allow. This has been funded through a controversial targeted rate of $60 per property.

The latest Selwyn residents sur-vey found that only 30 per cent were happy with the district coun-cil’s maintenance of rural roads – the lowest satisfaction score for any district council service.

NZTA already contributes $3.95 million (47 per cent) of the district council’s budgeted $8.4 million per year for road maintenance re-newals (which excludes the extra $1 million funded through the tar-geted rate).

The Leeston Hotel, which was demolished in 2011 due to earthquake damage, is expected to be rebuilt next to its former site.

Craig Bradford, who is part-owner of The Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln, is understood to be one of two partners in the new business.

The district council ap-proved resource consent

on April 14 but a building consent application has not yet been lodged for the site, which is on Market St, next to the site of the original building.

The replacement buildings are expected to house a bar, TAB and gambling area, bot-tle store, restaurant, indoor and outdoor dining areas, function rooms, motel units, backpacker accommodation and a manager’s residence.

Both Mr Bradford and landlord Daniel Smith declined to comment, with Mr Bradford saying that key details were yet to be finalised and it would be premature to discuss things at present.

Robert Catley-Day owned the hotel at the time of the earthquakes. After it was demolished he sold the land and moved to the United Kingdom.

Indecent exposurePolice are appealing for witnesses of an incident where a man alleg-edly indecently exposed himself to a six-year-old girl in the Rolleston New World car park on July 31. The girl was in the car alone while a fam-ily member was in the supermarket, when the man pulled up alongside her in another car. Sergeant Chris Jones said the man then began “playing with himself ” while looking at the girl. Po-lice believed they knew the identity of the offender and that it was a man who had committed similar acts be-fore. The description they had was of a Caucasian man, in his 40s, driving a blue Japanese station wagon. Sergeant Jones said an arrest was “imminent.”

Rolleston School sees a compro-mise offered by the Ministry of Education, over a request for land, as better than nothing but still not good enough.

The school wants the ministry to buy 1.2ha of land on its boundary to future-proof the school against roll growth and put it on an equal footing with other local schools which have more land available. It currently has 740 pupils on its 2.9ha site.

The ministry has said that the ex-pected asking price of $2 million, the market value of the commer-cially-zoned and council-owned land, would not be good value for taxpayers’ money, when there are other urgent priorities for educa-tion spending. It has agreed to buy 0.5ha of land which would square off the school’s boundary.

However, last week the minis-try’s head of education services Kim Shannon said a previous offer to lease the land for the school, un-til it was needed for development, was still on the table.

Ms Shannon said the ministry said it was apparent many parents were not aware of the offer.

“We are more than happy to lease the land from the council for a couple of years for the school, as the council has no immediate plans for the land,” Ms Shannon said.

“If the school would like to pick up this option we are happy to pro-ceed with that, and   could make

this available for the new school year in 2015.”

However, the school’s board of trustees chairwoman Leanne Brown said while the school would be likely to accept such an offer, the ministry’s stance was unfair and the school was seeking “more per-manency.”

The ministry had predicted the school’s roll would peak at around 900 pupils in the next two years and then fall back down, however, the school believed there would be no such decline.

“I think we have had a handle on [predicting roll growth] right from maybe 10 or 15 years ago. We have never been wrong yet but the ministry has.”

Mrs Brown said the school also continued to question why the district council could not offer the land at a lower price.

She said she had been told the land had been bought by the dis-trict council for several hundred thousand dollars and if this was the case it could sell the land for well below the market value and still make “a hefty profit.”

District council chief executive David Ward said the land referred to was bought by the district coun-cil in 2006 as part of a larger block of around 4ha, at a cost of $3 mil-lion.

“The prior history of the land does not change council’s position, which is that it holds land assets

for the entire Selwyn community and has a responsibility to ensure it gets a fair return for those as-sets which can be used to benefit the wider community,” Mr Ward said.

The ministry has a $5.2 million development plan for the school, which includes modernising of buildings and providing new class-rooms.

Rolleston School principal An-drew Morrall echoed Mrs Brown’s concerns and said that if a lease was on the table the details needed to be made clear soon for planning purposes. The school would seek “a minimum” of 15 years to allow a clearer long-term picture of roll growth to develop.

Awards finalistRolleston’s Ryan Ridden-Harper has been selected for the national final of the Sir Paul Callaghan Eureka! Awards, to be held in Wellington next month. The competition involves con-testants, aged 13 to 25, making a presentation on science, tech-nology, engineering or math-ematics. Mr Ridden-Harper’s presentation, ‘recovering the night’, discusses the negative ef-fects of light pollution on human and animal physiology and the economy. If declared the winner, he would receive $5000 towards the cost of study. He is currently a student at Canterbury Univer-sity.

Ski field upgradePorters Ski Area will install a new four-seater chairlift to replace its T-bar. It will be the closest chairlift to Christchurch and the first to be installed in the Canterbury region in nearly a decade. The chairlift is part of a multi-million dollar work pro-gramme over the summer which also includes the construction of a new beginners slope.

Scarecrow contestThe annual scarecrow competition at the Lincoln Farmers and Craft Market will be held this Saturday. Entries must be 1m high and brought to market between 10am and 10.30am. This year’s competition features a new category – ‘best dressed live scarecrow’, otherwise known as ‘fancy dress’.

How long have you been in the police for?

I joined in January, 1998, so a wee while.

Where have you worked in that time?

I started in Blenheim and then from Blenheim I transferred down to the Hornby station and from Hornby I went as a constable out to a rural station in Lincoln and relieved in Rolleston and Darfield and throughout Selwyn actually. Then I went back to Christchurch central where I worked for two and a half to three years, then back out to Selwyn.

When did you come back out to Rolleston and how did that come about?

I came back out here at the end of 2012. I applied for the position and was lucky enough to get it. I guess for me, it was the fact that I grew up in the Selwyn area, so it was almost like a homecoming, re-ally. I know the area well and sort of have an affinity with the people of the area, I guess.

Where in the district did

you grow up?In Dunsandel, on a sheep and

mixed crop farm.Does your family still have the

farm? No, my father has retired from

the farm but my mother and fa-ther still live locally in Selwyn.

Did you ever think of follow-ing in your parents’ footsteps and taking on the farm? Was that an option?

Yeah, I did. In fact it was men-tioned to me prior to my father selling the farm but at that stage I was a young fellow in my early 20s and I was in the air force and there was no way I was going to come back and work hard on the farm when I was lucky enough to be travelling around the world in the air force.

How long were you in the air force for?

I was in the military for eight years.

Where did you go overseas?I went to Hong Kong and Singa-

pore with the air force. Why did you leave the air force

behind?I had been thinking about the

police for some time and it was my wife who said ‘you won’t stop talk-ing about it, so do it.’ So I applied and was lucky enough that within two months of my application I got accepted and was on a

recruit course.Do you live in Rolleston?Yip.What’s it like policing in

Selwyn, compared to Christ-church?

It’s very different. I guess one of the big things from a police perspective is we have the ability to follow through with our cases in the country and while you sacrifice a little bit of anonymity – people know who you are – it also gives you a bigger sense of respon-sibility towards your community. You feel, because you are part of

the community, that you tend to do your very best every time to help people out.

Crime wise it is definitely not as busy as the city but having said that, I think out in the country, be-cause it is not quite as busy, we are able to give a better service to the public. We deal with things that in reality, in town wouldn’t get dealt with by the police, so it is really like policing was back in the 80s. You just get to follow through with the investigations and try to prevent things from getting bigger.

Sergeant Chris Jones grew up in Selwyn and is now one of its senior police officers, based at Rolleston. He spoke to Tom Doudney about his time in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, why he joined the police and playing in a highland pipe band.

serviceman to police

What made you want to join the police?

I guess I like being part of a team and I like working towards common goals and I guess it was also the draw of catching baddies. It’s that cops and robbers draw – you are out trying to catch the bad guy.

Before the police and the air force, did you do any other work, or look at any other career paths?

No, they have been the two jobs I have had.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Was it a policeman?

No, I always wanted to be a soldier, so it was something I sort of came to later on.

Is the job out there changing as the population grows?

Definitely. Increased popula-tion obviously creates a whole lot of other issues with it and it is becoming more and more an ur-ban policing environment. I guess what you do notice is that inevita-bly, it sort of loses its community feel a little bit.

You do some policing work on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu every year. Can you tell me about that?

It’s an overseas deployment that I do three times a year for three weeks at a time and it’s a project that is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

How did you get picked for that role?

It’s just one of the benefits of the police – there are so many differ-ent avenues that you can go down and put your name for and for some reason I was lucky enough to get selected.

The place that I police in is very much a rural policing situation similar in certain areas to what we

do here in Selwyn.Do you look forward to going

over there?Yeah it’s great. I really enjoy

it. Once you pick up a bit of the language and things like that you build a pretty good relationship with some of the local boys there and I enjoy going back there every time.

What do you like to do out of work hours? What are your main interests?

I love sport – rugby, cricket and I play golf badly. I’m a member of the highland pipe band. There is my family, obviously. Also, I love

fishing – sea fishing or fresh water.Do you play rugby or cricket?I used to play cricket and

rugby for Dunsandel. Last season I helped coach the Lincoln under 16 rugby team which was a bit of a highlight for me.

How long have you been play-ing in pipe bands for and how did you get into that?

It started a long time ago when I was 13 or 14. I’m not really sure how I got dragged into that. It’s one of those things that back then, especially in Leeston and Dunsandel, everyone was related to everybody else and so you have relations in the pipe band. It was just a good thing for a young fel-low to do. I got to travel around the country for contests and it was good fun.

Have you got any pets?I’ve got a bullmastiff dog called

Jake and have a cat called George. What about family? You men-

tioned your wife.I’ve got a wife and two daugh-

ters.In your spare time, do you like

to sit down with a good book, or zone out in front of the telly?

I love reading, I read a lot, and I will watch a fair bit of sport on TV.

Do you have a book on the go at the moment?

At the moment I am reading a book from a series which is set in the English Civil War. The name of the book has slipped my mind but it’s a series about a character called Captain Striker.

FRIENDLY FACE: Behind the desk at the Rolleston Police Station. Right: On a deployment to Tanna, in Vanuatu, last year. Sergeant Jones goes three times a year to work in a mentoring role with local police.

The Ellesmere Heritage Park Trust has released its design for a new facade to be built on the wall of the main building fronting Leeston Rd.

Work on the facade is expected to begin in the next few weeks. Once approval of the resource consent has been received, work will begin on alterations to the toilet block.

Designed by Richard McNeill of Architect Studio Christchurch, the facade will be an integral part of fully enclosing the main build-ing and securing a bird proof in-terior.

It is intended to show the public

the vision the trust is working to-wards and demonstrate the size of the project.

Once secured, the starlings will have to move elsewhere and work on building an internal area for the Ellesmere Historical Society and the initial displays can begin.

The trust has been working through various consent processes to achieve its vision. Members are keen for people to know and un-derstand the nature of the heritage project.

“We want the community to know this is not a small museum but a facility based in Leeston which will, in time, be a signifi-

cant destination,” trust chairman John Winchester said.

“[A destination] where people can research their own past, learn about things that no longer exist, or activities that have contributed to where and how we live today. A centre for the history of the Sel-wyn district.”

The trust’s annual general meet-ing will be held on Thursday, at 7.30pm, in the Leeston Commu-nity Room. Air force museum di-rector Therese Angelo will share her experience of developing mu-seums.

The meeting is open to the pub-lic and Mr Winchester said he was

hoping as many people as possible would attend.

The trust was looking to make contact with anybody who would like to help out with the museum in any way, or who had old mem-orabilia which could be displayed. A working bee was held at the site every Tuesday.

In October, the trust was set to meet with the development of-ficer from Wellington’s Te Papa museum, Judith Taylor, who was giving advice on setting up and funding the museum.

“She is really the best in New Zealand for this sort of thing,” Mr Winchester said.

• From page 1The new NZTA funding comes on

top of that and will go towards reseal-ing up to 75km of roads and improv-ing drainage along 350km of local roads.

NZTA’s regional manager planning and investment Mark Yaxley said the decision to approve the additional funding was in recognition of the impact of increased traffic on the dis-trict council’s roading network.

The number of people commut-ing from Selwyn into Christchurch to work grew by 44 per cent between 2006 and 2013, while the number of vehicle kilometres travelled on local roads in Selwyn has increased from about 250 million in 2005 to 350 mil-lion per year currently.

The number of heavy vehicles us-ing local roads has also been steadily increasing, in particular the number of dairy tankers and vehicles involved in the construction of subdivisions.

Over the past year, windstorms, flooding and heavy rain have also added to the amount of maintenance work needed on roads.

District council asset manager Murray Washington said the invest-ment was important to keep the road network operating well and avoid the amount of major maintenance work needed in the future from escalating. It would help avert the network’s de-terioration, rather than improve it.

“When the foundations of our roads become wet their strength is re-duced and they become more prone to developing potholes or edge dam-age, particularly on heavy vehicle routes.”

Selwyn residents are happy with rubbish and recycling services but dissatisfied with roading and cycle-way provision, a residents survey reveals.

Each year, 1000 residents are surveyed on the district council’s performance in a range of areas.

The top rated services were rub-bish collection, which 91 per cent of residents rated as good or very good, and recycling collection (90 per cent).

Areas where residents rated the district council least well were maintaining rural roads (30 per cent satisfaction) and cycleways and safe cycling routes (33 per cent).

Overall, of the 18 services sur-veyed this year, 13 received sat-isfaction ratings of 50 per cent or more.

Residents considered rural fire and Civil Defence, roading and footpaths, water supplies and plan-ning for the district’s future to be top priorities.

The results also showed that more than four times as many peo-ple (55 per cent of respondents) have visited a public swimming pool within the past year since the previous year’s survey. This coin-cides with the opening of the Sel-wyn Aquatic Centre.

The survey, completed by inde-pendent research company Re-search First, is available at www.selwyn.govt.nz

As the community has grown so has West Melton School.

In 1971 the school roll was 78. Alan Bond had left as princi-pal and been replaced by Robin Hobern. The fourth room was added in 1972 as the roll reached 108 and the two-bay Centennial Library was built.

In 1974 room five was built, room six was built in 1975, room seven in 1976, with the roll reach-ing 200 at the end of 1977.

More land was bought for the school in 1978, the swimming pool was enlarged to a length of 25m and a dental clinic was built.

In 1980 the Swimming Club was opened with Noel Hickland as chairman, Dorothy Oakley as secretary/treasurer, Sue Little as club captain, and Jennifer Hobern and Wendy Calder as coaches.

Over the next five years the roll was static and Robin Hobern re-tired in 1985. The next two princi-pals were Brian Couch and David Clayton. Kevin Rait was principal in 1996 when the roll was 267. In October of that year, celebrations were held to mark 125 years since the school opened.

Colin Watson was chairman of

the committee, with Fran Rae (nee Francis Chatterton) as secretary.

During the 1970s and early 1980s the school had produced a newsletter that was sent out to the community. Unfortunately, in 1983 this was stopped due to bud-get cuts. Elizabeth Mitchell came up with the idea of a community newsletter, which was supported by Margaret McFedries.

With help from Alastair Nicol, the first monthly, four-page copy of the West Melton News was pro-duced with 230 copies delivered.

Thirty years later a team of 10, including Margaret McFedries, produced a 60-page newsletter with 1600 copies.

In 1998, the 125th anniversary of the first service of St Paul’s Anglican Church was held. The Preacher was the Reverend Dr Da-vid Coles, Bishop of Christchurch.

Ministers over the last 20 years were Martin Warren, Gordon Langrell, Eric Etwell and Graham Button. For 28 years Colin Watson was chairman of the local commit-tee and Jim Jarman was secretary/treasurer for 23 years.

The first Presbyterian congrega-tion in Canterbury was that of

St Andrew’s Church, which was opposite Christchurch Hospital. In 1857 the Reverend Charles Fraser, MA became minister, a position he was to hold for 27 years.

In 1883 he opened a church on his farm at West Melton. He died in 1886. The farm was on the north side of West Coast Rd be-tween Sandy Knolls and Weedons Ross Rd. It is not known how long the church services were held for.

The first Presbyterian services were held in West Melton in 1872. Over the next 60 years there were two periods when the church was in recess. The Presbyterians had bought the Methodist Church on the north-east corner of West

Coast Rd and Weedons Ross Rd in 1915. The present church was built in 1962 for £5000.

The West Melton Garden Club was started in 1985 with a like-minded group of gardening enthu-siasts. In 2014 there are still three of the original group members, Al-ison Pearce, Margaret McFedries and Anne Healey. The club now has more than 70 members.

A meeting was held on March 31, 1978 with the idea of forming a bowling club in West Melton. This was to be in the south-east corner of West Melton Domain.

There were many fundraising events held – progressive din-ners, musical evenings with meals,

fashion parades, growing potatoes, oats and barley, card evenings, euchre, flag 500, coffee mornings, firewood sales, golf tournaments, dance suppers, Bavarian evenings, raffles at the hotel, a bullock raffle and non-interest debentures.

Those involved in the early days were Ray and Mavis Quinton, Norman and Florrie Calder, Noel Edge, Robin Hobern, John Pearce, Jim Overton, Arthur Pearce, Ar-thur Smaill, Trevor Watson, Derek Wild, Nobby (Michael) Clark, Jim Jarman, Wattie Longman, Kea Samms, Dave Norrie.

The West Melton Rugby Foot-ball Club was formed in 1974 and will celebrate 40 years this year.

AS IT WAS: West Melton School (date unknown).

West Melton will celebrate its 150th anniversary this year on Labour Day weekend. In recognition of the occasion, the Selwyn Times is running a series of articles written by local historian and author Colin Watson. This week’s article covers the period from the 1970s to the 1990s.

Rakaia machine shearer Tony Coster has been accorded master status after a strong performance in the world’s top shearing and wool handling event.

Mr Coster, along with blades shearer Brian Thomson of Christ-church, machine shearer Nathan Stratford of Invercargill and wool handler Joel Henare of Gisborne, was accorded master status at the recent Shearing Sports New Zea-land conference.

Mr Coster finished second at the Golden Shears event, held in Mas-terton in February.

Mr Coster has been among New Zealand’s top multi-breed shear-ers for several years and has pre-viously celebrated victory in the PGG Wrightson National series finalised at the Golden Shears. He came second at this year’s event, with 88.247 points.

He has also won the New Zea-land Shears Circuit final in Te Kuiti.

Master shearer status was cre-ated when a group of foundation recipients was announced at the 1975 Golden Shears, and 64 have now been accorded the hon-our.

A vote of at least 80 per cent at the conference was required for each to be confirmed. Delegates took into account competition performances, character, com-

mitment and performance in the industry.

Small trophies marking the accolade are expected to be pre-sented to Mr Coster and his fellow recipients during the 2014-2015 competition season which starts in Alexandra next month.

SKILL RECOGNISED: Tony Coster and three of his fellow shearing greats have been awarded master status.

HITTING THE SLOPES: Sydney Tupou, 9, was one of 46 Burnham School children, who headed to the Porter Heights ski field along with a team of parent helpers, for a fun day out. The children had lessons and showed their determination to learn new skills, making the most of the trip.

A new show home will soon be opening in Stonebrook subdivision in Rolleston. This home illustrates that an

attractive new home can be built to meet any budget.

While David Reid Homes has been active in the areas of Lincoln and Prebbleton, it is the first time they have had a show home in Rolleston. This new show home has been built as a cost effective achievable home for those people wishing to move to Rolleston who have a limited budget.

David Reid Homes has been a name synonymous with house design and construction in the Canterbury area for the last 18 years. There are 22 David Reid franchises that reach as far south as Waitaki and over to the West Coast. The team at David Reid Homes Canterbury have considerable experience in creating individual and innovative homes whether architectural stunners or the intimate family home.

This building company takes care of all aspects of the building process from drawing up plans specifically to suit a customer’s needs, lodging and finalising resource consent, to planning the interior look including lighting and energy efficient options.

Quality assurance is their aim. This is reflected in their systems that are being continuously improved. “With a large number of builds on the go at any time effective management is essential. We only take on what we know we can achieve and ensure a quality finish so our project managers look after a limited number of jobs at a time,” explains General Manager, Chris Solly. “This allows them to spend time on site and manage contractors so customers get what they want.”

The Project Managers closely follow the plans, specifications and other information relevant to each build working with their clients throughout the building project. This ensures the end product is completed to a high standard and in line with customer requirements.

In addition to this personal relationship, David Reid customers can access and watch the progress of their build using an on-line job tracking system. All information about the build is available to them including their documentation, photos, up-dates and variations. Clients can download and store these details on their own computers and even check the site from other parts of the world. Clients also have email access with company representatives connected with their build allowing them to talk to the right people when they have a query.

Having a transparent process is considered essential by those at David Reid. “It is better to tell customer what is happening. They then feel part of the build and understand the process and what is involved,” says Chris Solly.

David Reid Homes’ Rolleston show home will open for the first time on 5th September; opening every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 4pm.

1 Quartz Drive, Stonebrook Subdivision (off Brookside Road), Rolleston

GOOD WORK: Christchurch City Mission food bank co-ordinator Mary Wood thanks Lincoln High School social studies teacher Rachel Meadowcroft for the work her year 11 students did in raising money and donating food. The students were set the task as part of an NCEA achievement standard. Working in groups they raised nearly $1000 and gathered around 300 items of food. To accomplish this they ran a bake sale and a ribbon day, as well as raffles and activities in form time, as well as doing work in the community. The students also visited the City Mission to learn more about the people they were helping. Ms Meadowcroft said the students were “incredibly committed, showed huge initiative, energy and independence, as well as massive compassion and empathy for their community.”

T he management team at Onyx Homes are arguablyunrivaled in the home building sector. With years of

experience and having previously built one of NZ’s largestnationwide building companies, at which time had won moreMaster Build Awards than any other company in the country, home building has become second nature.

Richard Freeman director of Onyx Homes says “people needto be very careful and it’s a real concern with a lot of these new“so called” building companies entering the marketwith management at the helm with no clue on how abuilding company actually runs. We are seeing plumbersand electricians starting up building companies here in

Christchurch to get a foot in the door. People should alwaysgo with a Registered Master Builder to ensure they are ingood hands and their asset is well protected”.

With the client and their best intentions at the forefront oftheir company philosophy and a driven passion to get itright every-time has been the success of Onyx Homes.

From concept design through to handing you the keys of yournew home we guarantee you only the best experience.

Our sole goal is to deliver a superior product on time withthe best price that sets the benchmark for the buildingindustry, and continue to raise the bar.

BUILDING PERFECTION WITH ONYX HOMESThe biggest point of difference you will find with Onyx Homes compared to most is you will NEVER deal with a “Sales Consultant”.Quality and value are two words that are misused and abused by Sales Consultants chasing their commissions by over stating and under proving. At Onyx Homes you deal directly with the management team and owners Richard Freeman and Paul West when designing, pricing and building your new home. “This is our business, our livelihood and our reputation and we ensure we get it right every time” states Richard.NO “Sales Consultant” means NO sales commissions. Couple that with the fact they own their own brand and don’t pay Franchisee royalties or cost “safety

contingencies” due to their superior IT platform Onyx Homes can save clients up to $23,000.00 before you even start on an average $300,000 build!!It’s a misconception that choosing an off the shelf standard plan buys you an affordable home. Its very likely the exact same floor plan will be built time and time again and could even be built right next door! Onyx Homes believes you should be unique and build the home that

HERES THE FACTS – Stated by Richard Freeman, Director Onyx Homes LtdDon’t believe everything you hear in the media and some building companies trying to margin enhance making ridiculous

statements about huge building price increases. If you want genuine best pricing and top quality give Onyx Homes a call. You are guaranteed to talk to LOCAL industry

professionals with years of experience rather than a sales person trained over night drafted into the industry with limited knowledge and zero idea on building costs working off a pre prepared song sheet. A sad but true statement in many cases.Honesty, integrity, experience and common sense always outweighs “smoke and mirrors” and unfortunately common sense

is not that common in many cases. Building commodity prices ARE stable, and I will personally guarantee that.

“We design your home to suit your site and individual requirements

at a better price”

Place the hazelnuts in a food pro-cessor and process until ground or pound in a mortar and pestle.

Place the egg yolks in a stick blender jar with the lemon juice. Pulse mixture together then add the bubbling butter in a steady stream until the sauce is thick and emulsified. (The hollandaise sauce can be kept warm until ready to use in a warm, not boiling, water bath).

If you have a food questionemail Glenys [email protected]

Q A&HOW CAN I TONE DOWN SOMEVERY HOT CURRY POWDER?Use less, or dilute with non-hot ingredients such ascardamom, coriander, cumin, fenugreek andturmeric. Or replace halfthe curry powder withgarammasala, which tendsto be spicy rather than hot.To decrease heat in a currythat’s already beenmade, addmore vegetables(particularly potatoes) ifthey have time to cook, plusstock, water or coconutmilk. Or stir in yoghurt atthe last minute. If eating atoo-hot curry, drinkmilk oreat a banana.

CAN I BOTTLE SQUEEZED LIMEJUICE IN THE SAME WAY ASFRUIT?Yes, either by the open-panmethod, or processed in awater bath. But either waythe juice needs to besterilised by heating, whichaffects its fresh flavour. Ithink youwould do better tofreeze the juice in ice-cubetrays (add grated zest if youlike), transferring frozencubes to a plastic bag forstorage. Lime slices andwedges can also be frozen, but once thawed the fleshwill collapse. Store freshlimes in the fridge.

Take control of your grocery budgetI

KNOWI’m not the onlyone guilty of impulsebuying. Did I really needthat pink chocolatecrammedwith hundreds

and thousands and enticinglydisplayed near the checkoutyesterday? It could have blownthe budget (and the calorieintake) for the week. I noted acolleague falling into the sametrap.Flatmates and young

marrieds often askme how theycan keep their weekly food bill in

check. Here are 10 ideas.■ Planningmeals well inadvance eliminates the need topurchase last minute quick-to-prepare butmore expensiveconvenience foods.■ Make a roughmeal plan

starting with dinners followedby breakfasts and lunches. Takeinto account the number ofpeople at eachmeal, their ages, gender and the amount ofenergy they expend during aday.■ Save fuel by planning somemeals to be cooked in yourelectric frypan, crockpot ormicrowave oven, all of whichuse less power thanconventional ovens and hobs.■ Choose seasonal foods—they’re always lower priced than

out of season goodies. Growyour own fruit and vegetableswhere possible.■ Make a shopping list and stickto it. Check the pantry to ensureyou’re not buying an item youalready have.■ Try to planmenus aroundweekly supermarket specials.■ Check the labels on thepackets for “use buy” and “bestbefore” dates. It’s uneconomic tobuy an item that will be out ofdate before you have used theentire amount.

■ Buy only what you require, especially with fresh produce. For example, it’s pointlessbuying bananas just becausethey are on special at $3 for twokilograms, they are not going tobe consumed before they goblack andmushy.■ Try to cook one eveningmealthat will last two nights. Stews, casseroles and crockpots areperfect examples.■ Avoid those temptingdisplays in your supermarket—just buywhat’s on your list.

NEWSEASON FASHIONINSTORE

Kim’s

Fashion Quarterly from Kim Taylor —Viva La Moda

Here at Viva La moda, we often hear the comment “i am too old to wear that” from customers, but usually it is more a case of how to wear it not necessarily avoiding it altogether.Just because you are over 30 does not mean you need to dress in conservative shapeless clothing. You can still be fashion forward and gorgeous while dressing age appropriate.Reaching a new stage such as motherhood for example can also raise some fashion

uncertainty for some, wondering how to dress for this new stage in life. Becoming a mother need not mean losing your own identity in the process,

and while young there is no better time to wear anything that suits you and appeals to you. in

the interests of feeling good, it is important to still look great. You may need to adjust your wardrobe to suit your more casual lifestyle if you are not working but you do not need to start wearing shapeless boring clothing!irrespective of your age, dress to suit your shape and personality and dress in a way

that is flattering and makes you feel great.Women of this generation are dressing a lot younger and that is definitely a positive thing. sometimes some styles just require some tweaking as we

get older to ensure we are still achieving a sophisticated look. A

dress well above the knee which looked great in your 20’s and 30’s may well look better in your 40’s and 50’s just above or on the knee or when worn with slim leg pants or a layering skirt to add extra length.

The main fashion faux pas to be aware of in terms of avoiding the dreaded “mutton dressed as lamb” label are: too short, too tight or too revealing. Usually one of these elements is acceptable, it is really only when all three combine that things become risky: A shorter dress will always look more sophisticated if combined with a more demure neckline. A tasteful hint of cleavage is feminine and classy as long as it is not combined with anything too tight or short. A very fitted dress will still look sophisticated (on the right figure) so long as it is not too short or low in neckline.A lot of fashion items can be worn at any age. Jeans for example are a staple item in every wardrobe and can look great on all ages. Again it is a matter of choosing a style that suits your figure type. slim silhouettes are most definitely where it is at in fashion currently, so choose between skinny and straight for a modern look. Ultra skinny may be better left for the young but again, it is more a matter of how you wear them. in the end, the key to successfully looking age appropriate and modern is paying attention to what feels right on you.

Dress To Suit Your Age – Am I too old to wear that?

HEALTH

A study of the link between obesity and cancer has found that being overweight is closely linked to 10 common cancers.

Researchers who undertook the big-gest study of the links between body mass index and cancer said that of the 5.2 million British patient records studied over a year, 165,000 developed some form of cancer and more than 12,000 of those were connect-ed to the patient being overweight or obese.

Every five-point increase in BMI — equivalent to an increase in weight of about 17.5kg — was associated with a 62 per cent higher risk of cancer of the uterus, a 31 per cent increased risk of gallbladder cancer and a 25 per cent increased risk of cancer of the kidney, according to the study.

The study, by experts at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Farr

Institute, found that having a higher BMI was also linked with a greater overall risk of liver, colon, ovarian and breast cancer.

Although it was already known that higher weight increases the chances of contracting certain cancers, risk levels have never before been determined in such detail.

The researchers estimate that if existing trends continue by the mid-2020s there could be more

than 3500 additional cases of cancer diagnosed every year. “The number of people who are over-weight or obese is rapidly increasing both in the UK and worldwide,” study leader Dr Krishnan Bhaskaran said.

“It is well recognised that this is likely to cause more diabetes and car-diovascular disease.

‘‘Our results show that if these trends continue we can also expect to see substantially more can-cers as a result.”

Excess weight may account for as much as 41 per cent of uterine

cancer cases and 10 per cent of gallbladder, kidney, liver and colon cancers.

Precisely how body fat influ-ences cancer risk is not fully understood.

Dr Bhaskaran said the variation in its impact in different forms of cancer suggested it must be affect-ing risk “through a number of dif-ferent processes, depending on the cancer type”.

Obesity bigfactor in cancer

BODY MASS: Excessive weight can contribute to cancer risk.

Habits to help heal your spiritSelf-image and style expert Susana Tuya Sarmiento is part of a team of health experts who give advice on A Season of Change, an online self-image and lifestyle TV show that aims to positively impact the lives of thousands of Kiwi women over 12 episodes. Here, she gives her top five tips for a sustainable, healthier life:

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Our bodies are constantly com-municating with us and letting us know when we’re in or out of the flow of life. With our hectic, stressful lives we can place too much pressure on ourselves, and our bodies might be screaming at us to stop.

BREATH AND YOGA We have forgotten how to breathe properly so our cells are not being replenished. Getting into the habit of taking three big breaths, in between tasks, will revitalise and ground you. You will regain focus and energy. Rejuvenate your body with five minutes of yoga a day. Each morning, I stretch, breathe and hold poses to warm up my body

for the day. A great therapy and relaxation technique.

WATCH YOUR WORDS Become conscious of your unconscious thoughts, the language you use and the words you tell yourself, especially when you look in the mirror while getting dressed.

DON’T BE HARD ON YOURSELF Our constant striving for “per-fection” creates many unrealistic expectations in our lives and the lives of others. Life is about making perfection out of imper-fection.

LEARN TO SAY NO It’s not selfish to make your own energy, body and happiness your No 1 priority. If you fill up your cup first, you’ll have more to share with others. Love your-self fully and see how others begin to treat and relate to you.• Susana Tuya Sarmiento has been coaching women to look and feel magnificent for more than 25 years. Late winter is the season when the deciduous magno-lias are at their best.

August seems to force these gorgeous flowers to open in a rush.

The breathtaking sight of the large, tulip-like blooms perching on bare branches can send passers-by rush-ing to the nursery to buy something similar. There are dozens of magnolia variet-ies, and making a choice can be a formidable task.

The names are confus-ing so it’s usually easiest to forget nomenclature and just go for the flower you like most (remembering, of course, to check the ultimate height on the label).

Most grow into small trees but, if space is tight, look for one of the shrub-sized star magnolias.

Because magnolias come from cool climates with rich, moisture-holding soil, keeping them happy through hot New Zealand summers can be a challenge.

It’s important to take the opportunity to improve the soil as much as possible before planting.

Choose a spot that gets at least half a day’s sun and is protected from strong winds.

Start by clearing grass

or ground-covering plants from an area about a metre across, then dig plenty of manure or good compost and some longlasting fertil-iser into the soil.

Because magnolias hate being dry, it can also be helpful to add some water-storing crystals into the planting area.

Create a planting hole that’s about twice the size of the pot and approximately the same depth. Take the plant out of the pot with

care (magnolias hate root disturbance) and sit it into the planting hole.

Backfill, then water well to settle everything into place. Lastly, spread a layer of organic mulch. This will keep the soil moist and stop competitive grass from growing back over the root area.

Once the magnolia is well established you can plant some bulbs around the base to add extra interest in late winter and spring.

Magnificent magnolias

INTERESTING: Magnolias provide a burst of colour during late winter.

Oderings is laying down a challenge to our customers - develop an urban honey bee garden. We invite you and your family down to your local garden centre to create a ‘Bee Palace’ for these buzzy pollinators.

Like all living organisms, bees have their place in our ecosystems, and they have a vital role to play. Without the humble bee’s assistance in helping us to grow the beautiful berries, fruit and healthy vegetables we love, we could lose a large chunk of agricultural crops that we take for granted.

In New Zealand we often hear about the decline in honey bee numbers. Sadly, bees are now under attack because of such threats as the varroa mite, which, if an infestation occurs, can wipe out whole hives. They are also affected by toxic garden sprays and the lack of natural habitat. Honey bees need pollen and nectar to survive which is why we challenge you to make your garden a honey bee palace.

Time to get planning! Here is a list of flowers loved by bees.

Annual Flowers: Antirrhnum, Alyssum, Chrysanthemum, Cosmos, Sunflowers, Verbena, Zinnias.

Shrubs: Citrus, Erica, Flax, Fuchsia, Lavender, Manuka, Old Fashioned Roses, Prunus (Cherry Trees), Rosemary.

Tips:

• Bees love water so find a little area where you can place a bird bath or small pond. They use the water to cool down the hive.

• Make sure you mass plant the same flowers. Bees will work on one spot for at least ten hours and like to collect from the same type of flower.

• Be bee aware: who would have thought some organic garden insecticides are very toxic to bees. Ask us in store about our new ‘Tui Shots’ range which is bee friendly.

So jump on board the bee friendly garden wagon and help contribute to continuing the survival of bees.

GARDENING

Sweet temptationsHomegrown strawberries

are mouth-wateringly delicious. The flavour and

taste of strawberries ripened on the plant cannot be trumped by anything bought from the store, no matter how fresh they are.

Strawberries are an easy crop to grow and it is no surprise that they are one of the world’s favourite fruit. They’re best planted in winter and early spring, when the ground temperatures are cold. At first, all the growth happens under the soil, as the roots establish themselves.

The colder soil temperatures stimulate flower-bud development and, subsequently, fruiting ability and capacity. When the warmer weather arrives, the plant springs into action above the soil and new season’s foliage and flowers will appear.

Where to grow Full sun is mandatory for strawberries. No sun equals poor flower production and, worse still, less fruit that will have little flavour and struggle to ripen.

The soil should be friable (loose) and fertile. Each season, reward and refresh berry beds with layers of chicken manure and strawberry food.

Strawberries are gross feeders and quickly use available nutrients in the soil. These nutrients need to

be replaced to allow the berries to keep fruiting.

Ideally, the soil should be moist, but not waterlogged. In some areas, this can be a challenge, particularly over winter. Growing your strawberries on mounds is a good way to improve drainage, and raised beds or containers can be used, too.

The ground-covering habit of strawberries makes them an ideal option for pots, tubs and hanging baskets. Make sure, when growing them in any sort of container, that it is big enough to provide plenty of room for the roots of the plants to develop.

Restrictions on root development will impede the growth of the plant. To give you an idea, a 30cm hanging basket will hold about three plants with ease, and five at a push.

Specific strawberry planting and potting mix take all the guesswork out of filling containers and planters, and premium potting mixes work, too. Don’t scrimp and use cheap compost or old potting mixes, these will lack fertility and the ability to promote a healthy, lush crop. The plants need a good foundation to produce a bumper harvest.

Every strawberry patch has a life period of about three years. The first year the crop will be average, with the second and third

years being the best. After that, the plants lose vigour, harvest diminishes and plants need to be replaced.

A position protected from wind is also useful as numerous insects are part of the pollination process and strong winds can result in poor fruit development.

How many?Working out how many to plant can be a challenge. You may be governed by the amount of space you have available. Cramming too many into a small space is not ideal; the plants will compete with each other for nutrients, sunlight and water, and the lack of air movement will cause pest and disease problems as well.

In the garden, allow 30-50cm between plants, and 60-70cm between rows. Nine plants per square metre is a good fit. Work on 6-10 plants per person in the household. For example, a four-person family requires 24-40 plants. Strawberry runnersEarly in the season, as the plants start actively growing, runners come out from the centre of the plant. Remove these to encourage the plant to put more effort into producing flowers and fruit. Midsummer, let a few develop to grow on as replacement plants.

Protection and straw Layers of straw mulch around the plants will keep the weeds away as well as help the soil retain moisture. It also protects the berries from becoming dirty or damaged.

When berries start appearing, protect and cover the plant with netting, mesh or tunnels to deter birds and small animals.

Existing strawberry beds Remove all the dead and old leaves before the new season’s growth starts and dig out any

runners that will compete for nutrients around the main plants. Sprinkle strawberry food around the drip line and add a new layer of straw mulch around the crowns, if need be.

Harvesting The best bit is harvesting. Choose those that are fully ripe on the plant as they do not ripen further once picked. Berries ripen 4-6 weeks after the flowers mature. Once ripe, they deteriorate quickly if left on the plants for more than a few days. Regular harvesting will promote new flower stems to appear.

EASY: Strawberries are best planted in winter or early spring.

MOTORING

WHEN KIA New Zealand launched the Soul here in 2009 it was a little slow to catch on.

While its small hatchback/SUV concept was desirable, the Soul was a little on the expensive side and was filled with minor but flashy specification which bumped up the price and didn’t quite fit with the way Kiwis viewed a motor vehicle purchase.

That has all changed, a new gen-eration Soul has just landed, and while the basic body configuration isn’t much different it is now more affordable and comes with specifi-cation akin to its class.

I like the Soul as a design con-cept, it is roomy, extremely practi-cal and is built with the quality we have now come to expect from the Korean factories. Incidentally, the new Soul is all-new, every body panel is different but it still has that unmistakable Soul look.

It arrives here in three speci-fications, a low and high grade 1.6-litre model and a high-grade 2-litre. They are priced at $29,990, $33,490 and $35,490 respectively.

The test car here was the high grade SX 1.6-litre and it gets items, over and above standard grade, such as leather trim with heated and ventilated front seats, parking sensors and rear view reversing camera, and 18in alloy wheels.

Under the bonnet sits a 1591cc petrol engine. It is pretty much the same engine which carries through a host of Kia product and stands out for its lively per-formance and fuel thrift. The latter rated at 8.2-litres usage per 100km (34mpg) on a combined cycle average according to Kia. An activeEco fuel saving mode which relaxes engine performance can be selected so that fuel economy is the first priority.

During my time with the test car the onboard fuel usage readout was sitting consistently around 10l/100km (28mpg) with 8l/100km available at a steady

100km/h cruise (engine speed 2400rpm).

The engine is rated at a healthy 91kW and 152Nm, both outputs realised high in the rev band at 6300rpm and 4850rpm respec-tively.

They are handy figures and combined to produce a lively response to throttle request, against the clock the Soul will reach 100km/h from a standstill in just over 10sec and will provide peace of mind in a highway over-take (80km/h to 120km/h in 7sec).

Power is transferred through a conventional six-speed automatic transmission, the only gearbox in the range, and it is a smooth shift-ing unit with ratios designed to

provide a smooth flow of power through the ratios. That’s the ben-efit of six-speed autos, they don’t have big gaps between the gears and the engine doesn’t get bogged down filling the gaps.

The Soul is no lightweight at 1392kg, but the engine works freely and feels lively underfoot, encouraging the driver to feel its potential. I took the test car up the Port Hills and it showed no sign of wilting in the steep bits, revving freely and hauling through the gears with plenty in reserve.

When presented with a quick corner or two the Soul has direct and accurate steering and a feel through the chassis of control. A lot of that has to do with

Flexsteer, a three-mode steering wheel firming system which the driver can select to his or her pref-erence.

The rear suspension is a simplis-tic tube beam design but it doesn’t work against rear wheel move-ment. The spring and damper rates are set soft to medium; as consequence, there is a little bit of body movement and a slow transition with sudden directional changes, but that is only at the extreme, and given its design purpose the Soul has satisfactory handling manners.

Special mention must be made of the tyres, they are a Nexen brand, and at 205/45 x 18in, they have a fairly wide road footprint.

Consequently, they have high grip levels along with a quiet-riding nature.

Most importantly, the Soul is a comfortable car to travel in and it is designed so that optimum use of onboard space is created. It is a genuine five-seater although it is a little bit tight in the rear for three widthwise.

But for children, and it is the quintessential family car, the Soul is a practical and functional vehi-cle. Under the tailgate Kia claims a 354-litre to 1367-litre cargo car-rying capacity, the rear seats fold forward in a 60:40 split so that objects of length can be trans-ported.

In its new form the Soul has been numbed down cosmetically and that is good, the original was all bells and whistles, today’s Soul has more of an emphasis on prac-ticality and that’s what will win it favour.

It still has all of the ingredients which a buyer would expect in a 40K car but without the pizzazz. And buyers know that in a Kia purchase they are buying a quality car and one which will still appeal well after the next generation lands.
