Harvard - Emergency Medicine Survey Results limitations 65% response rate, low match numbers (N=4 for USA) Unable to track individual responses Eg if matched responder did research or not Quick time frame for responders Confidentiality some did not chose to disclose match info Limited experience in survey development Here is your grain of salt Demographics 2013 Graduating Class 52 enrolled 2010, 6 withdrawn, 4 repeating 4 th year 43 Graduates responders 29 Canadians, 3 Americans, 1 Australian, none from Singapore/other Class of: , 2012 4, /32 matched- 4USA, 12 Canada, 5 Unkown HETI - NSW HETI 18 responders 22 responders Commonwealth Medical Internships (CMI) CMI 2 Matched students filled survey 1 year working contract, 1 year ROS contract Monetary penalty for breaking contract If CMI placement is in a city or town that is not one of the major centers (Syd, Bris, Melb, Perth, Ada), the ROS contract is fulfilled by the working contract Most offered contracts were in Qld or WA CMI failure to complete the internship year or the return of service period will result in a breach of the ROSA and may require the applicant to repay the cost of providing the internship place. This may be up to $130,000 Canadian Residency Matching Service CaRMS CaRMS Deadline in Nov January/Feb March February August September CaRMS Family medicine 6 Internal Med 2 Paediatrics 2 Radiology (U of T) 1 Paeds Neurology (U of T) 1 Ottawa, UBC, Queens, Western, Manitoba, Calgary CaRMS 62% had done a rotation in their specialty in Canada and outside of Canada Only 12% had done rotation with program they matched to 82% reference letters from matched specialty Avg 15 programs applied to, 2 specialties, 10 programs ranked Avg. 4 interviews, attended the Ontario FM interview CaRMs Advice Apply broadly location and speciality Write your exams early, NAC-OSCE is important now Be Organized, apply early, be prepared Dont be discouraged, there is hope and dont sell yourself short We have done really well this year and I hope it is an inspiration to everyone Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) NRMP October - January March February - end July ERAS November - NRMP Sept 15th ERAS Core application Components Essay Letters of Reference Deans letter Scores Different programs will weigh these differently Can make or break an application NRMP 4 matchers completed survey 1 SOAP applicant, none SOAP matched Majority rotated in Specialty, in the US or outside of the US Majority (85%) had letters from that specialty in application Large number of programs applied to Other Success Stories General Surgery Yale Pediatrics Sinai (Baltimore) Med- Paeds Cleveland (location not specified) 5 Canadians Pulled out of match NRMP NRMP Advice Apply Broadly Apply early, have your applications in on the 15 th of Sept BUT better to have complete app later than partial app on the 15th Chase your reference letters early Have your exams completed on time Rotations and reference letters from your chosen specialty and program are invaluable **make sure that if you are Canadian that your specialty is on the "list of needed specialties" for the year of your match, or if the list isn't available yet then contact someone before you submit and ask if you can find out if it will be. I almost ran into visa problems because of this!** Interview Advice Dont be an asshole, dont lie, dont make promises you cant keep Have fun, play nice with others, send thank yous Be passionate, know what you are talking about, and do your homework on the program and their people Dont be afraid to chase down an interview if you have been rejected Take the chance to do a shadow shift if possible You are a novelty, go to a good school, and are well trained. Be very careful not to throw anyone under the bus Unmatched Year Clinical Traineeship is an alternative to those who don't match or are unable to match first year out in Canada. It is a license to practice under supervision. The experience is varied depending on where and with who your placement is, but possible to line up a paid position. Hard Truths and Good news You cannot rely on an Australian Internship when you finish It will be hard work and expensive You will need to be flexible, you might not get your first choice and you cant be picky BUT We are competitive! We match well and into competitive programs If there is something you want to do, you can do it First Year Start to think about what you are interested in : What do you want to be? Where do you want to go? Work on your CV: Get involved Leadership, Research, Team building, volunteering Get as much exposure at hospital as possible Have fun. Second Year Start to narrow down your interests Start to consider electives Look at possible programs and locations Familiarize yourself with program requirements: Specific application requirements Choose your stream wisely Study for exams (USMLE) Make some contacts at Xmas Third Year Plan and organize for your electives: Dates, locations, applications, scholarships Think ahead (or write) exams: USMLE if not done MCCEE Rock your electives, collect reference letters Bring important documents back to Australia with you after Xmas/electives Fourth Year Know ERAS and CaRMS deadlines! Look at programs application instructions Write the exams: NAC and USMLE step 2 CK + CS before July!!!
