The Zero Twist guarantees twist free feding of weft threads made of carbon, wire or mono- filaments. For the development of the Zero Twist C, ONTEC received the Bavarian State Award.

Zero Twist ZThe Zero Twist Z from ONTEC enables a twist free weft insertion during the weaving pro- duction. The Zero Twist Z can be used for all filament materials such as carbon, glass, ribbons and monofilaments.

The market for the usage of composite mate-rials based on glass or carbon fi bre fabrics is an enormous growth market.

Typical applications are motorcycle helmets, hulls of boats made from carbon fi bre reinforced plastics, wings of windmill power plants or wings and body parts in the aviation and space fl ight industry. In the next few years a high growth rate is anticipated especially for the aviation in-dustry and the automotive engineering sector. Due to the aimed weight reduction, mainly CFRP materials are used, i.e. carbon fi bre reinforced plastics materials.

In the Airbus A380, for example, approx. 20 % CFRP components are installed. In the Airbus A350 it will already be 40 %. Particularly in this high-end sector, the quality requirements for the material used are very high.

Only with high component quality, the amount of material usedand thus the weight of the end product can be further reduced.

The uniform and gentle processing of the car-bon fi bre material is of elementary importance for the consistently high quality of the fi bre composite materials.

PROBLEMS WITH THE PROCESSING OF CARBON FIBRESMost textile carrier fabrics are produced by weaving. However, weaving is a type of proces-sing that places high stress on the carbon fi bre material. Depending on the process conditions, individual fi laments break during the proces-sing of the carbon fi bres which are fed in form of tapes. This reduces the stability of the sub-sequent component.

A particular weak point is the feeding of the weft thread in the weaving machine, which is inserted at high speed and acceleration through the open shed, in cross direction to the warp thread. For example, the yarn is accelerated from 0.1 seconds to speeds of up to 50 m/s over a length of 2 m and then decelerated to 0 m/s again. Since these weft threads must not be twisted during insertion into the shed, as this would lead to loss of stability, the so-called overhead draw-off from the yarn bobbin and supply via a weft feeder, as is usual with other textiles, is prohibited.

The twisting of the thread can only be prevented by the tangential unwinding of the thread

bobbin. For this, however, the yarn bobbin would have to be accelerated with high dynamics, which cannot be achieved even with highly dynamic servo drives.

This problem is solved by integrating a thread accumulator between the motor-driven thread bobbin and the weaving machine, which balances out the strongly varying thread consumption of the weaving machine. Such accumulators create the necessary yarn supply in the form of loops. The loop formation is generated either by a force-loaded dancer roller or by an air stream in which the yarn is defl ected.

Both systems have considerable disadvantages. The inevitably mass-loaded dancer roller can only follow the highly dynamic movement of the weft thread to a limited extent, so that only low production speeds are possible. The solution with the air stream, in which the yarn is entrained, leads to a defi brilation of the fi ber bundle and thus again to a considerable damage of the yarn.

THE SOLUTION IS THE ONTEC ZERO TWIST Z, WHICH ENABLES TWIST-FREE WEFT THREAD INSERTION.

6 Automation GmbH

ONTEC‘s Zero Twist Z is provided to a weaving machine. The usual bobbin creel is no longer required. The highly dynamically driven bobbin

unwinds the weft thread tangentially and thus torsion-free. The yarn is guided by ceramic guide elements.

ZERO TWIST D

The Zero Twist D was specially developed for the twist-free insertion of weft material into wire weaving machines.

The usual „overhead draw-off“ of the weft wire hardly enables an automatic production of wire fabrics with conventional production methods. This applies especially for the use of heavy materials and profile wire. In case of conven- tional constructions, the bobbin is repeatedly braked during insertion due to tangential draw-off from the bobbin. Furthermore, insertion of weft wire is only executed at low speeds.

The Zero Twist D is provided for a wire weaving machine. The highly dynamic driven wire bobbin allows the tangential and twist -free unwinding of the weft wire. Starting at the bobbin position, the weft is guided through ceramic eyelets, the integrated dancer, the deflection unit and out-let of the unwinder directly to the feeding secti-on of the weaving machine. The dancer controls the bobbin drive depending on the wire quantity drawn off by the rapier. As standard, the Zero Twist D is operated autonomously. If required a further capacity increase can be effected through the coupling with the control tech- nology of the weaving machine.

ZERO TWIST M

The Zero Twist M is the result of extensive de-velopments made by ONTEC. It allows twist free insertion of monofilament weft threads into the shed.

Based on the available innovative materials and processing techniques there are only a few limits for the production of high-performance fabrics. The draw-off of the weft thread in „overhead” mode is one of these limits. With every en- lacement pulled from the rigid bobbin, the yarn twists once around itself. The number of yarn twists depends on the width of the fabric and the filling degree of the weft thread bobbin. The feeding device itself does not cause any twists. The twisted thread is inserted into the fabric and the closing shed fixes the thread in twisted condition. This causes tensions in the fabric and inhomogeneous surfaces.

The Zero Twist M from ONTEC is provided to a weaving machine. Thus, the usual bobbin creel is not required anymore. The highly dynamicallydriven bobbins unwind the weft thread in tan-gential and thus twist-free mode. The yarn is guided via ceramic guide elements to the in-tegrated and sensitively balanced dancers, via weft feeders up to the insertion positions. Each bobbin supplies exactly the quantity of thread that the feeder retrieves. As standard, the Zero Twist M is equipped with two bobbin positions, enabling the release of up to 1080 metres of mono-filaments per minute. Versions with three or more winding positions and special solutions are available on request.
