Asian cultures represented in Charlotte encompass over 13 nations. One of the missions of the CAACC is to unite all of these groups to better service the public. Asian history spans thousands of years and its culture is rich and diverse. The CAACC strives to provide business opportuni-ties and to promote business activities through cultural events, such as the annual Asian Festival & Dragon Boat Races each spring and Asian celebrations in the Fall that display our resources and share with you our ethnic qualities.

Forty five years ago, there were less than 200 Asians and only 8 Asian businesses in the Regional Charlotte Area, but this number has grown to 55,000 Asians and 870 businesses directly involved with Asians. Consider-ing average gross sales of $520,000 a year per business, the Asian popula-tion of this area is generating $452 million in revenues, contributing greatly to the regional economy. We invite you to join the CAACC for unique resources, and then cross the bridge between the East and the West.■

The 1st Chun International-Jan. 19 - 30, 2015Reading & Singing Fest ival

January 30, 2015 brought two weeks of Chun University's First International Reading and Singing Festival to a very successful close. The curtain came down that Friday evening with a exquisite musical performance by world-class opera singers.

The festival was produced by Chun University and was held at the Asian Library and CU campus. Attendees included people from all over the world and the US including: Korea, 7; China, 23; Japan, 2; Germany, 1; El Paso, Texas, 2; Singapore, 1; Washington, DC, 4; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1; Fayetteville, North Carolina, 5; Charlotte, North Carolina, 53; 99 participants in all. The purpose of the festival is based on the vision of Dr. Yeongkee Lee, Dean of the School of Music. Dr. Lee notes the saying: "The common understanding

is that man makes books but books make a better person." In his book The Church Music, Dr. Lee writes: "Singing is the common language to all humanity." The festival was held over two weeks, during which the participants read over five books, shared in small groups,

and memorized more than five songs. There were two master classes in voice and piano. The voice classes were attended by 5 students (from Charlotte, NC and Texas) and was taught

by Sangmin Lee. Mr. Shaun Choo offered personal piano instruction to two students, both from Charlotte. There was no

charge for any of the classes. All who had master classes were very satisfied saying that the teachers helped them improved their given talents. Two concerts were held in association with

the festival. The first was held on January 24th, the Shaun Choo Piano Recital. Shaun had studied piano since he was 7 years old. He has grown up to be an internationally renowned pianist and has since improved his talent at University Mozarteum in Austria. Shaun has won first prize at the Chopin Competition in Hungary, France, China, and Korea. He plans to have piano recitals in the spring of 2015 in five different European countries. At the concert, Shaun's audience said unanimously, you could feel that the piano and player had become one. "What beautiful sound and technique!" "It was almost as if the sound came from Shaun." Some noticed how he played with his right hand while conducting himself with his left! Others said there was a special presence about his playing, as if a divine entity was at work through his gift. Those who could not come were told of his concert and regretted not being present. Shaun had brought 34 copies of his DVD as recorded by the Singaporean government. All 34 copies sold out at the concert. Shaun will be adjunct professor of piano when CU opens.

The Participants Concert was held on Friday, January 30th, the final day of the festival. It was a high quality concert, and extraordinary event with solos and duets by opera stars, performances by children from the festival, a presentation by the Chun Philharmonic Orchestra, and a final performance by the Carolina Mission choir and Chun Philharmonic as conducted by Dr. Yeongkee Lee (Dean of Music, CU). Music was performed by:Sangmin Lee (tenor) - The Face (Guibok Shin) and Ma Feierabend (Schubert)Songi Kim (soprano) - Ah! fors'e lui (Verdi) Jinseop Song (tenor) - Salut!

demeure chaste et pure (Gounod)Ok Kim (soprano) - Shin Arirang (Dongjin Kim) and O mio babbino caro (Puccini)Masanori Takahashi (baritone) -Ching-a-ring-chaw (Copland) and Votre Toast (Bizet)Sharon Neff (soprano)

- Song to the Moon (Dvorak) and Nella Fantasia (Morricone)Duet by Songi Kim (soprano) and Jinseop Song (tenor) - Panis Angelicus It was truly an international festival because all the music from Korea, Italy, France, Czech Republic, England, America, and Germany. Children also sang the Do-Re-Mi song (from the Sound of Music) which they learned from soprano Dr. Ok Kim in a lesson over several days. The Carolina Mission

Choir with the addition of special guest opera singers performed the finale: Let us Serve Him (Besig) and How Great Thou Art! (Boburg). The finale brought the audience to a standing ovation. Encores from everyone brought the conductor to encourage the audience to sing the final song "How Great Thou Art" together. Dr. Lee, Dean of music, conducted with energy and passion. It was a very moving experience for all in attendance including all the Charlotte Asian leaders (CAAC, Philippines, and Indian leaders). Some even said they tasted heaven. Many others including Jennifer Roberts, present Charlotte mayoral candidate, were so moved. In a statement to Dr. Chun, Roberts said: "I can foresee that Chun University can change the spiritual atmosphere of the Charlotte community." Dr. Chun (President and founder of CU) especially sends personal message of appreciation to those who attended the festival. "We will have this kind of concert as much as we can and we hope that we will enrich the Charlotte community through music."

The pioneer volunteers and festival goers at the first Asian Festivals at Marshall Park from the year 2000, will be amazed at what the Asian Festival has now become. Some of you who were with us then, will recall the seemingly endless prizes of towels, bedsheets, comforters(Spring Industries) being raffled off by Lena Chun , the charming Chinese, Vietnamese,Hmong, Filipino groups contacted by Linda Yu and Becky Wu, performing on the blistering hot concrete, the flawless wit of Emcee Andrea Lee, (this after she was done settling in the food vendors), then there was this Filipino food booth complete with a facade, a bamboo thatched " Sari Sari Store of Lesley & Flor" , the irresistible aroma wafting from the skewered pork/chicken barbecue-ing on the grill , the turron being fried into crispy deliciousness by the Manglicmot's, de Vera's, Hugo's,Ocampo's...Yummm !.. And what about.the kids dragging their Moms & Dads, lining up hesitatingly for the intimidating ride in the hot air balloon of Nimish Bhatt... Parks & Rec officials, like Karla Gray, Vuthy Niles, Chris Xaypangna, being oh so " hands- on" at the grounds and bursting parking lot, the surprise FACC float of Oscar Spence of Albemarle, laden with be-costumed smiling beauties from Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia,Thailand,China,India, etc...Indelible memories of happy, carefree Maytime at the Asian Festival, thanks to Dr. Ki Hyun & Dr. Sunny Chun who founded the event to unite the Asian community, in celebration of the Asian American Cultural Heritage Month of May.

Since then, the Festival has been held at the Wells Fargo Atrium, before moving to the Ramsey Creek Park , Lake Norman, with the inclusion of the Charlotte Dragon Boat Festival, founded in 2005.by Dr. John Chen. Early supporters include Garry Bhojwani & family, who berthed the boat at their house on Lake Wylie, Gilbert &. Angela Kho, Khai, long time volunteers Lina Kweman ,Doris Tan, Melvina Jett The Charlotte Dragon Boat Association, now a 501(c) 3 organization, led by President

Brian Tarte, supports the Charlotte Team which has been competing and winning medals in other cities in the Southeast. The Dragon Boat Festival continues to grow, as a great team builder for many Fortune 500 companies in Charlotte, which are sponsoring the event and participating with their own teams as well. Fast track to May 16,2015 and you will see some of the new generation of Asian American beauties...smart, techno savvy, yet ever so graceful & demure while they show off their elegant native costumes...as they go

through the timeless movements of the traditional folk dances of their ancestors, and speaking articulately, eloquently,.during the Interview portion of the Miss Asia Carolinas. MAC.the multi-cultural showcase founded in 2003 by Dr. Nini, with a mere ten participants..In 2013, there were more than 20 participants.. Early volunteers include Dell Fallar, Lily Ann Cabanero Darcy Vitente,Malaya Abed, Maria Weezorak,Monica Kweman, Mae & James Armstead. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for the youth to re-discover their cultural roots, to embrace their cultural identities and share their cultural gifts. In the process they will discover that they can be whatever they want to be and confidently face challenges.. Deadline this year for MAC applications is Feb 21,2015.Candidates must be Asian Americans, 16 to 24 yrs. old, of good moral character, with high academic standing, recommended by school/community org., can perform a talent( 3 min), reflective of their culture, ,can attend the 3 obligatory whole- day sessions, requires a national dress. and payment of $150 registration fee. competition b) talent portion (to even the playing field, those with professional training will be rated differently from the amateurs) c)Interview portion (Q/A).There will be about $4,000 to $5,000 Scholarship Cash Prizes to be awarded to the different winners: Ms Asia Carolinas, 1st Runner up, 2nd Runner up,Ms. Scholarship, Ms Talent, Ms Photogenic, Ms Friendship ( tentative) In more than ten years of MAC, most of the winners & participants have gone on to Ivy League colleges like Harvard, Duke, MIT, UNC Chapel Hill, etc. and some graduates have started on very promising career paths. We are humbled by their acknowledgement of the fact that MAC helped them gain confidence in themselves, to try to be the best of what they can be. and thereby realize their full potential. MAC has taught them that "To believe is to succeed".. This year, due to the increasing interest of the community in Dragon Boat racing, it is planned to accommodate some 50 (!) Dragon Boat teams ( compared to the 20 teams back in 2005),vying for the top slots in the exciting race. Logistics for the thousands of festival goers is quite a challenge every year, as the CAACC seek funds for the bigger parking lots, more shuttle busses, bigger tents & stage, sound system, the management team of the races, tents for the Cultural Display Booths, the Food & non Food Booths, the support services, emergency teams, Porta- Jons, set- up/clean- up crews, etc.. Marshall Park was much simpler then ! The CAACC is so grateful for the sponsors and donors, and the awesome volunteers who have been helping us through all these past fifteen years of the Asian Festivals, allowing us to celebrate the Asian Americans in the Carolinas..Thank you all.■

Publisher’s Corner

It is the French phrase describing "the moral obligation of those of high birth or powerful social position to act with honor, kindliness, and generosity." Rarely found in history and even more rarely practiced in contemporary society, it is an element of character that this world is begging to find. Unfortunately, it is also a quality seldom found among the elite in today's society. As demonstrated on December 5, 2014 by the scandal caused by vice president of Korean Air, Ms. Hyun Ah Cho, noblesse oblige is something that many privileged among the Asian community have forgotten. Ms. Cho, who is not only the vice president of Korean Air but also the daughter of the company’s chairman, caused an uproar over her behavior on a Korean Air flight from New York to Incheon, South Korea over a bag of macadamia nuts. She became irate while riding in first class when a flight attendant served her macadamia nuts in an unopened bag rather than on a plate. Ms. Cho then called for the chief flight attendant and began to interrogate him on the procedures for serving nuts. When he was unable to answer her properly, she demanded that the plane be turned around so that the chief attendant could be kicked off the flight. When news of this incident got out, many saw this as just another example of the excessively privileged behavior exhibited by those in positions of wealth and power in Korea. They saw the daughter of the owner of an airline, feel entitled to make a flight attendant kneel and to further humiliate him by forcing the entire plane carrying 273 passengers to turn around just to kick him off the plane, all over a bag of nuts. Another example of those in high social positions placing themselves above rules and regulations relates to military obligations. Due to the constant threat from and proximity to North Korea, all South Korean male youth are required to participate in military service. Yet from majority Korean presidential candidates to politicians and the privileged classes, service in leadership has been forgotten in lieu of prominence, and a sense of exemption. One leader

claimed that his sons were "too light in body weight" for military service. These are government leaders who rather than encourage their children to respect service and duty to their country, use their power and influence to exempt their children from mandatory military service. And perhaps the most tragic of all examples of this disturbing societal trend is that of the Sewol Ferry incident, which occurred in Korea on April 16, 2014. On that day, the Sewol Ferry capsized killing 304 of the 476 people onboard. Those who died on the ship included 250 children all from the same high school who were going on a school trip. In contrast, 22 of the 29 crew members survived, including the captain who was one of the first to be rescued. The captain

and 14 other crew members were later convicted of criminal negligence. The most condemning evidence against the captain being that he told the passengers to remain calm and stay in their quarters, knowing that the ship was sinking and escaping for his own safety. We are in need of a revival of responsibility, honor and moral obligation especially among the privileged classes. At its birth nearly fifty years ago, Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Now it is the 10th most powerful and economically prosperous country, which was achieved through a strong work ethic and sense of social obligation. But what has happened to selflessness of leadership? Does not the true meaning of leadership anticipate the laying down of one's own interests

in the service of others? Perhaps it would help to rediscover what noblesse oblige looks like in history. To have an example to follow, some illustration to imitate, or some previous action to model would certainly give place for reflection. When contrasting the Korean ship tragedy with one of the most notable shipwrecks in history, the Titanic, the story is even more painful and disgraceful. On its maiden voyage, April 10, 1912, steaming ahead far too fast in the dark and dangerous waters of the North Atlantic, the ship grazed the underwater spike of an iceberg and was quickly overwhelmed by an ocean of water coming in from the 300-foot gash. The captain informed the crew and passengers, but they were ill-prepared

for the catastrophe. The number of passengers easily outnumbered lifeboat capacity and in the panic and chaos that ensued, emergency procedures were in total confusion. What followed was three hours of heartbreaking choices: men making sure their wives and children were aboard and refusing to join them in an act of selfless sacrifice; the launching of boats that were not even close to capacity due to confusion on the deck; and people who had made it onto lifeboats helplessly watching those who remained on the ship sink into the ocean. The captain and most of the crew remained with 1,500 passengers on the doomed vessel. But noblesse oblige is not a characteristic limited to men. Molly Brown, an heiress, helped others board the boats and refused to be helped herself. She was forced into the last boat when it

was almost too late. In the end, only 705 of the ship's 2,240 passengers and crew survived. On my trip to Paris in August of 1999, my family and I viewed original sculptures by the artist Auguste Rodin. I had always admired the thoughtfulness and intricacy of Rodin’s sculptures, especially "The Thinker," even before our trip to Paris. Although his sculptures have a rough quality to them, they have a depth of expression rarely matched by any other artist. In fact, there are three reproductions of "The Thinker" that stand in my Asian Library today. One of the original pieces of Rodin I saw was “The Burghers of Calais.” I was so impressed by this statue that I bought a book about it and learned all about the story behind it. During the Hundred Years' War between England and France (c. AD 1337-1453), in 1347, King Edward III of England invaded France and laid siege to the city of Calais. After 11 months, Edward III promised pardon to the city's inhabitants and relief from the siege if six noblemen surrendered, barefoot and dressed in sackcloth with nooses strung about their necks, begging for mercy and offering their lives for the sake of their people. If they did not, all the inhabitants of the city would be slaughtered. Without hesitation, six men, the most prosperous and prominent of the city met Edward III’s demand. These men included the city’s major, the city’s most wealthiest man, a prominent business man, and his son. For their act, Eustache de Saint-Pierre, Jean d'Aire, Andrieu d'Andres, Jean de Fiennes, and Pierre and Jacques de Wissant were immortalized in bronze as the Burghers of Calais by Rodin (1884-95). For fear of retribution by Edward's queen, Philippa, their lives were spared. After reading about this story, I was moved at the spirit of sacrifice these men displayed for their community precisely because of their position of power and prestige. They did not believe that their stature in society exempted them from societal obligations. On the contrary, they believed that their stature created a heightened moral obligation to act with honor and duty that would serve as an example for others. And indeed their noblesse oblige has been immortalized in Rodin’s sculpture, which inspires many future generations all over the world. ▄

TURANDOT Back Stage with stars

From front and center to backstage, Opera Carolina's rendition of Puccini's Turandot was spellbinding in every way. Performances by Othalie Graham (Turandot), Dina Kuznetsova (Liu), Carl Tanner

(Calaf), and Joseph Hu (Pang) highlighted the evening's lavish portrayal of revenge, comedy, and sacrificial and conquering love. Puccini's Turandot is noted for its strong dramatic content and for the aria Nessun Dorma (Act 3). Opera Carolina's version did not disappoint

on either count. A surprising addition were the projections which gave certain scenes just the right edge of passion, danger, or movement from one scene to the next. Othalie's Turandot was

beautiful, edgy, and dramatic. Ping, Pong, and Pang (Guagliardo, Bocchino, and Hu) were a great comic relief. In act two, their comedy brought many in the audience to laugh out loud. Dina Kuznetsova's Liu was passionate and gentle. In his recent online review of the performance, Luiz Gazzola (Opera Lively) commented:

"This original and new production by Opera Carolina is a showcase for the company's maturity and capacity to put on stage strikingly beautiful sets, costumes, and projections. The Charlotte public was treated to compelling, sleek, minimalistic sets using platforms, staircases, and panels hanging from the top, that achieved in several

moments breathtaking beauty when the projections were added to the background. Add to this some rather extraordinary musical values in terms of principal singers and comprimarios, chorus, and orchestral conducting and playing, and you have one of the best shows of the last several years, anywhere in North Carolina and beyond. Actually, I'm convinced that

these days Opera Carolina is the leading company in the entire Southeastern United States. This is then a straight A production, which qualifies it as one of the best of the recent

several years." Following the performance, Dr. Ki-Hyun and Sunny Chun along with friends and board members of Chun University were brought backstage to celebrate the performance. Champagne toasts concluded the incredible evening with hearty cheers and congratulations to all the stars for a wonderful and passion filled performance.

No other state can claim the growth in Asian American communities like North Carolina can. Of the top three cities in the United States with the highest rates of Asian American growth between 1990 and 2010, Charlotte and Raleigh claim the number two and number three spots with 432% and 502%, respectively (Las Vegas had the greatest growth at 625%). Across our entire state, the population of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) has continued to rise to a point that a real shift in the balance of power may occur if the community makes it weight known. AAPI North Carolinians span the spectrum of education and economic status. They do not exist in isolated pockets but instead form an integral part of society. In 2007, AAPI owned businesses in North Carolina generated over $5.9 billion

in revenue and employed over 44,000 people. From dentists to dry cleaners, PhDs to janitors, lawyers to the poverty stricken, the Asian American community is not always easy to generalize. One thing that is certain though, is that North

Carolina’s Asian American vote is something that will continue to grow and less easy for politicians to ignore. Christine Chen, the Executive Director of APIAVote, a non-

partisan national institution focused on voter inclusion and participation for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, visited the Asian Herald Library on January 25th. She was joined by Charlotte’s AAPI leaders, Drs. Kihyun and Sunshin Chun, Dr. Nini Bautista, Mr. Nimish Bhatt, Dr. John Chen, Dr. John Zhang, and others to discuss establishing partnerships in the Mecklenburg area to engage AAPI voters. Chen shared her collaboration with Cat Bao Le, Executive Director of the Charlotte-based Southeast Asian Coalition, and plans to expand a voter engagement and registration program in Charlotte.Chen is known nationwide and was recognized in Newsweek magazine as one of 15 women

who will shape America’s new century for her record of building strong and lasting coalitions across the country. Her experience may help galvanize a population that has played a large part in making North Carolina a swing state in presidential elections. While only 60% of Asian Americans eligible to vote had registered to vote in 2012, the voter turnout was 82% - far more potent turnout than the national average of 59%. With such a high rate of casting votes, it is not hard to imagine what the fastest growing ethnic group in the country can do as it wakes up to its own potential. A common saying goes, “In politics, demographics are destiny,” but the AAPI community in North Carolina is not waiting for mere growth to push itself forward. As Shakespeare said, “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.”

In Politics, Demographics Are Destiny Daniel Chun, CPA, Esq.

Let's help Jerry Beat Cancer!

Jerry (Bei) Sun came to the United States from China with his parents when he was 6 years old. He graduated from North Carolina School of Science and Math (NCSSM) in 2012. He would be a junior this year at Duke University. However, tragedy struck in April of 2014. For weeks, Jerry struggled with a cough. He shrugged it off as stress from his

studies at Duke. But then in May, the doctors found a tumor in Jerry's chest the size of a grapefruit. Jerry was diagnosed with a very rare cancer called P r i m a r y M e d i a s t i n a l NonSeminomatous Germ Cell Tumor (PMNSGCT), known as a teratoma and sarcoma. Only 30 cases are diagnosed in the United States every year. The disease is formed from embryonic germ cells carrying genetic information which abnormally migrate to

the central area of the chest (mediastinal). Jerry's cancer began in his chest and moved to his liver. His family and a team of physicians have been fighting this disease since his diagnosis in April, trying to contain and shrink the multiple tumors through intensive chemotherapy. There have been ups and downs and a couple crisis situations, but the situation is now stable.

According to the doctor's latest report, he is responding to the treatment and the tumor indicator in Jerry's body is down significantly. However, the numbers are still way too high to be safe. Jerry is in for a long fight with this rare cancer. Jerry is now 20 years old and is receiving treatment at Duke. He stays in a rented apartment there in Durham, NC. His mom goes back and forth between Asheville and Durham, taking care of her

son and maintaining her job. Her employers are very kind in giving her the flexibility she needs due to Jerry's illness. But the pay is not enough to sustain them for this long-term situation. Jerry's father is taking a temporary leave from his research job in China. Jerry's little sister (7 years old) stays with a grandparent in Asheville. Friends of the Sun family have

set up a fund to help offset Jerry's mounting medical expenses. And Jerry has set up a webpage so you can read his story and contribute to fighting this disease:

h t t p : / / g o f u n d m e .com/jer-bear. If you would like to make a contribution, please visit this website. Let's help Jerry beat cancer! Any amount is welcome.

(Jenny Sun),

夏樂市「敦煌藝術團」(pacificartstroupe.org)是活躍在北

Asian Library

와 Chun University에서 열렸던 The

1st Chun International Reading &

Singing Festival

SHAUN CHOO는

CHUN UNIVEWRSITY

Participants Concert

solo로 soprano에 SHARON NEFF,

Sound of music

Do Re Mi song

Chun

Philharmonic Orchestra

(CHUN UNIVERSITY CHURCH

CHUN UNIVERSITY
