Bites of Bread from Bob Since June 29 we have been on a sermon series called “The Pursuit of Happiness”. We started with the word from the second paragraph of the Constitution that says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happi-ness.” Jim Clevenberg told me something that I didn’t realize. Originally the wording had been “life, liberty and the pursuit of property.” This followed closely with some words of John Locke. The last minute edit to “happiness” has a much sweeter ring. And yet, our cultural bias usually leans toward happiness being found in the things that we have.

Phillip Yancey tells of a man he met at a clinic in India. Dr. Paul Brande, a missionary and orthopedic surgeon, was working with a man named Sudan that had leprosy. Sudan told stories of being excluded and stigmatized due to the disease. Bus drivers would not let him on their bus. Employers refused to hire him. Sudan said, “But Dr. Brande took my infected and bleeding feet in his hands.” Sudan had almost forgot-ten what human contact was like. Other doctors

would try to treat him without touching him.

Through a number of surgeries and continued care, Sudan is able to walk, write and even has a family. Sudan told Yancey that he was actually happy to have the disease. Yancey inquired, “Happy?” Sudan replied, “Apart from leprosy I would be a normal person seeking what I see so many others seeking (wealth and status). I would not have been able to

have met Dr. Brande or God.” This is an extreme manifestation of I Thessa-lonians 5:18, “give thanks in all circumstances.” Sudan had found happi-

ness/contentment right where he was rather than in a pursuit of something else.

Seeing Clearly Now The replacement of the yellowed Plexiglas windows with new tempered glass has been accomplished on the stained glass windows of the church building.

This allows more light to come in, the windows to be more attractive from the outside and protects the stained glass from damage. There is still some painting of the trim around the windows that need to be accomplished.

Children and Youth Ramblings from Riane “And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word.” –Acts 4:29

In my daily devotional a few days ago, it stated that there are many situations in life that call for bold action. Usually it’s a social situation and interacting with someone else. Certainly a great amount of prayer is needed to be courageous because you are stepping out of your comfort and aligning yourself with Christ. Boldness is part of the journey in faith that we can plant the right seed or lead people in the right direction when we answer their questions. No matter how small it may be, there is a bold step you can take today in your faith.

I’ve been reflecting on these words as I prepare to be a camp counselor for middle school youth next week. I pray that during their camp experience, the campers have the courage to step out of their comfort zone and grow in their faith. I also pray for the spiritual lead-ership of the counselors – may we plant the right seeds and lead people in the right direction by follow-ing His word and being bold in our faith. I ask that you keep the campers, the counselors, and others involved in the ministry that will take place during church camp next week in your thoughts and your prayers.

A Little Light from Laurie When we received our Weird Animals Vacation Bi-ble School kit, we received a free “Odd Ball.” Look-ing at the picture of this very colorful ‘thing,’ my first reaction was, “Wow! This is soooo cool!” The colors and shapes connect together like a puzzle to make this unique and awesome ball of fun. Of course, it wasn’t pre-assembled. Instead, it came as 30 color-ful, flat, odd-shaped pieces of plastic with the words, “some assembly required” and a web address for the “helpful” video tutorial.

I spread the pieces out like a rainbow and looked them over as they stared menacingly back at me. Nothing happened. Then I decided to pray. Prayers. Prayers were needed for VBS. I decided to ask people to write prayers on each piece and assemble it later. Much later. Finally the moment arrived. I once again spread the pieces out and turned on the tutorial. After 20 minutes of attempting to connect these odd-shaped pieces together, pausing and restarting the video sev-eral times, I decided to pack them back up because obviously assembling this “Odd Ball” would take a miracle I am not capable of.

Last night, as I reflected on our first night of VBS, I thought of that “Odd Ball” and smiled. VBS, in itself, is an oddball of a miracle that I am not capable of by myself. It takes a plethora of gifts, talents, resources and hours of planning. And it takes God’s miraculous touch to fit all those colorful pieces together to make something fun and unique called Vacation Bible School. I thought about how thankful I am that I am not left alone to fuddle through life’s puzzles. I am grateful to all of the many colorful pieces of talent and resources we are gifted with.

Thank you, Lord, for making us uniquely in your image. Thank you for your children, volunteers, gifts and rewards of Vacation Bible School. Thank you for the message that no matter what, Jesus loves us and is always with us.

Things to Know and Do Regional Church Picnic Saturday, August 9 11:00 am, Willamette Mission State Park

This annual gathering is a favorite summer tradition. They plan to eat at noon, followed by worship. The Regional Church provides burgers and dogs, and re-quests you bring salads, desserts and smiles.

Flying M Ranch/Trask Mountain Overnight Horseback Ride August 22-23

Our congregation has reserved a two-day, one-night trail-ride package. Ride up to the summit of Trask Mountain to a secluded log cabin. All meals are included.

Dinner consists of BBQ steak and chicken, homemade yeast rolls, baked beans, salad and dessert. Sit around the camp-fire and stay the night in a wood-heated bunkhouse.

Includes: 2 Breakfasts, 2 Lunches, 1 Steak/Chicken Dinner and a great horseback adventure.

Cost is $290.

To reserve your space, make a $50 deposit with the church office.

The Friendship Day quilt circle has two garbage bags of lap quilts that need to be delivered to the Portland VA Hospital Volunteer Services.
