sa Anti-Hazing Inter-AgencyTask Force (Ahiatf) to addressthe growing problem of frater-nity-related violence, kungsaan kabilang sa mga hulingkaso ang kinasangkutan angmga mag-aaral ng De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (DLSU-CSB) at University of thePhilippines (UP).

    Armed Forces of the Philippines,

Philippine National Police, Com-mission on Higher Education,National Youth Commission atOffice of the Deputy ExecutiveSecretary for Legal Affairs ngMalacaang.

One hazing fatality is onetoo many, pahayag ni De Lima.

For every such case, morelives are lost than just that ofthe victim. Even the lives ofthose who are implicated aretarnished, and even the schools

and the educational system it-self suffer a blow. We cannotabide another senseless deathresulting from a misguidedsense of brotherhood or sister-hood, aniya.

Binuo ang Ahiatf dalawangbuwan makalipas ang pagka-matay ng mag-aaral ng DLSU-CSB na si Guillo Servandonoong Hunyo 28. Ilang arawbago nito, isang mag-aaral na-man ng UP ang nasaktan.Kapwa insidente bungaumano ng hazing.

LA SALLE, NU OUT TO SHOCK?

Underdogs couldmake UAAP historyto the title series. It happened

just last year when University ofSanto Tomas sent No. 1 NUpacking.

Only seven No. 3 teams hadeliminated the second-rankedsquad to reach the Finals in the

last 20 seasons, with Far East-ern University accomplishingthe last one in 2011, when itstunned No. 2 Adamson.

But the league never hadboth lower seeds forging up-sets at the same time to ar-range a championship show-down.

We were just grateful forthe opportunity to play, said LaSalle coach Juno Sauler.

    By Jasmine W. Payo

LA SALLE and National University have a shot atleague history after forging a pair of sudden-death matches in the Final Four of the UAAP

    mens basketball tournament.

The defending championGreen Archers and the Bulldogsmay emerge as the lowest seed-ed teams to arrange a champi-onship showdown if bothsquads overcome their semifinalopponents twice-to-beat advan-tage this Wednesday.

If history dictates itself, sobe it, said NU coach Eric Al-tamirano. At this point, were

    just giving everything that we

have. The Bulldogs aim to oust No.1 Ateneo at 2 p.m., while the

Archers also try to topple No. 2Far Eastern University at 6 p.m.,both at Smart Araneta Colise-um.

Since the league introducedthe Final Four format in 1994,the No. 4 squad had overcomethe twice-to-beat edge of thetop seed only once to advance

In the left photo, Gabe Norwood reaches high to score against two Kazakhstan playersSunday. Coach Chot Reyes, at right, appears to go low to beg a referee during the game where Gilas hadto win by at least 11 points for a chance to join the semis. The Filipinos won 67-65. NINO JESUS ORBETA

INCHEON, South KoreaThe door was finally shut

on Gilas Pilipinas. The Philippines turned back

Kazakhstan, 67-65, Sunday af-ternoon at Hwaseong Gymna-sium here but failed to collectenough points for a victorymargin that could have sentGilas to the semifinals of themens basketball tournamentof the 17th Asian Games here.

The Philippines needed towi n by at lea st 11 po int s toprevail via the quotient system

in a projected tie for second at1-2 among Gilas, Kazakhstanand Qatar, which was expectedto lose to South Korea in thesecond game.

We knew what we had todo at the start of the game, said coach Chot Reyes.

The last time that Gilas hov-ered above the quotient line, however, was when MarcusDouthit made a basket thatgave the Philippines a 67-56

lead with 2:12 left in the game.

We called a timeout [earli-er] and said we had to step onthe gas, Reyes said.

But as in a previous melt-down against host Korea on Sat-urday, the Filipinoswho at onepoint even led by 18couldntlatch on to the margin.

The moment Dmirtriy Gav-rilov and Pavel Ilin moved Ka-zakhstan to within four of Gi-las lead with 47 seconds re-

maining, it was clear that theFilipinos had to resort to des-perate measures.

And they did.Af te r Ka za kh st an mo ve d

within two points, Reyes hud-dled the players for a consensus:If they were allowed to shoot atthe opponents basket, wouldthey have the balls to do it?

When we asked one of thereferees if the basket wouldcount if we did it, he said yes,

so we did it, said Reyes.
