    Consumption is al-

    so expected to stay s t r o n g , t h a n k s t oc h e a p f u e l , w h i c hleaves more cash inpeople’s pockets thatcan be used to pay forother items.

At th e con clu si onof its annual “ArticleIV” country review, the multilateral lendersaid the Phil ippineeconomy’s strength

has led to higher in-come levels and lowerunemployment in thepast year.

“Real gross domes-tic product (GDP) con-tinued to grow briskly and unemploymentfell in 2014,” the IMFsaid in a statement.Last year’s 6.1 percentgrowth in PhilippineGDP was one of thefastest in the region,

led by a strong contri-bution of householdconsumption, fixedcapital formation andnet exports.

This year, the IMFexpects the Philippineeconomy to expand by 6.7 percent. This isbetter than the IMF’sprevious forecast of a6.3-percent growthfor 2015.

Likewise, the cur-rent account surplus isexpected to strength-en due mainly to low-

Meanwhile, risks were also cited , withthe main one being“disruptive asset priceshifts in financial mar-kets” due to divergingmonetary policies inadvanced economies.

    External demand,

     which drives the localexports sector, couldalso be weaker if risksof deflation and lowerpotential growth inadvanced economiesa n d k e y e m e r g i n gmarkets were to mate-rialize.

    To e n s u r e t h ecountry stays on itscurrent track, the IMFsaid the government

    should focus on struc-tural reforms that leadt o h i g h e r t a x r e v -enues. This would al-low the state to raisespending on infras-tructure, education,healthcare and otherk e y a r e a s , w h i c h

Fatherhood becomes GabbyJust like Mark (a.k.a.  Ralph

    Eigenmann), Gabby relishes fa-

    therhood’s joys—not just off-cam, but on-cam, too, in GMA 7’s new family-friendly dramaseries,  InstaDad (4:30 p.m. ev-ery Sunday).

Gabby portrays a famouschef named Kenneth, who is al-so one of the most eligiblebachelors in town.

Ken’s life is turned upside-down when he discovers that heis the father of three girls. Therole seems tailor-made for Gab-by, since he became an instantdad to his wife Apples’ two kidsfrom a previous relationship.

He legally adopted the twokids, Josh and  Gabbie. Applesand Gabby have kids of theirown, Liam and  Matti. Daddy Gabby certainly deserves an“Ulirang Ama” award

    Here’s my  tête-à-tête withGabby:

How do you take after yourdad in your fathering style?

    My dad was a responsible

person. He never turned hisback on any of his kids. He

wasn’t around all the time, buthe truly made his presence felt.He was a father at 16; thatmust have been hard.

We were more like barkada(close friends) and that’s the

way I am with my kids, too. Iam my kids’ best friend. Weshare secrets. Like my dad, I’malso clannish. Family comesfirst.

What do you miss mostabout your dad?

His laughter, jokes and sto-ries about family drama. He

was the heart and soul of thefamily. I miss how he would justcall and ask if I was about tospend my birth anniversary (March 2) in Hong Kong again.

What was the toughest partabout becoming an “In-staDad” to Apples’ two kids?

Josh was 3 and Gabbie wasturning 1 when Apples and Igot hitched. When I met Apples,it was true love. I knew what I

was getting into and I foughtfor it. I made sure I was makingall the right choices. It wasn’teasy because, like my dad, Istarted young. But even early on, I was already responsible.

My perseverance has paid off.Do you have sibling rivalry

     with Andi Eigenmann and SidLucero?

None at all. We all have ourplace in the industry. I love

them dearly. Since I’m the el-dest, I watch over them.

How do you make yourmarriage work?

    I’m a very private person.

What keeps us going is how wemake time for each other, nomatter how busy we are. Pa-tience is the key. We put God inthe center of our relationship. Iavoid temptation because at theend of the day, I know that if Igive in, I will lose more than

what I’ve gained, which is my family.

What was your dad’s ad- vice about love and show biz?

When I joined the biz, hetold me to hone my craft. Hesaid the key to success is beingprofessional. Those who are pa-tient are rewarded with success.Regarding love, he told me that

whomever I choose to be with,it should be for the long haul.

    Indian giant enjoying

his NBA momentSACRAMENTO, Califor-nia—Sim Bhullar is used topeople staring at him.

At 7-foot-5 and 360pounds, Bhullar’s big framedraws attention everywherehe goes. Even for him, though, the last few dayshave been unlike anythinghe has ever seen.

     As the first NBA play-

er of Indian descent,Bhullar has attracted a

worldwide audiencesince signing a 10-day contract with the Sacra-mento Kings. He’s fully aware of the cultural signifi-cance and wants to make themost of the opportunity—forhimself, his family and every kid in India with a basketballand a dream.

“It’s a big moment in the

history of the NBA and thehistory of my country in In-dia,” Bhullar said before sit-ting on the bench duringSacramento’s 101-95 loss tothe New Orleans Pelicans onFriday night.

Bhullar is still waiting forthat chance.

He had hopes to play fewminutes behind All-Star cen-ter DeMarcus Cousins andother veterans against thePelicans, but the opportunity never came. Despite thegame being televised in Indiaand fans in Sacramentocheering his name, everybody hoping to see Bhullar play could only watch him on thebench.

Bhullar spent this season with the Reno Bighorns of the NBA DevelopmentLeague. He’s not expected tohave a large role wheneverhe does play for the Kings

this season, so he doesn’t feelany burden of expectations.

“I’m just enjoying it rightnow. I don’t feel any pressureat all,” Bhullar said.  AP

Pacquiao in for fight of his lifeWE ARE a little less than amonth away from the biggestfight of the year, the decadeand the careers of Manny Pac-quiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

It would be safe to assumethat the buzz about the fight isnot the same in the UnitedStates and in the Philippines. In

America, it’s probably the box-ing fans and the Filipinos wholive there who are the keenest

about the battle. And that’s even if the ticketprices are out of this solar sys-tem. The best ringside seat inthe house will sell at P87,000based on latest reports. TheMGM is the place to be even if that seat is close to $2,000 andothers that are most likely to bein that range.

Even the pay-per-view tag isstiff at 100 per buy. Anyone

who’s been to the US knowsthat a hundred in your pocket isa lot in a country where mostpeople may not have thatamount walking around.

To many diehard fans in theUS and those from the Philip-pines who can afford the trip, hotel accommodations and Las

Vegas weekend, the expense isdeemed worth it. They’ve wait-ed too long for this to happenand knowing how unpredictableboxing can be, another versionof this battle may never happen

    again.

Here at home, taxi drivers, waiters and other ordinary folk are prepared to either head for

the theaters or endure the com-mercial load that usually ac-companies a Pacquiao fight.Three networks showing practi-cally the same fight does notseem to ring a bell with an au-dience already accustomed totaking in a Pacquiao fight on a

     via satellite though delayed ba-sis.

But the concern is not justover being able to watch thefight. There is a common desire

to see Pacquiao finally assert hispower over the loquacious May-

weather and hopefully score a win. This columnist’s analysisthat Pacquiao must win by noless than a knockout by themidpoint of the fight does notsit well with them. They foreseethe fight going Pacquiao’s way even if it goes into the finalround.

But here’s the honest truth:Mayweather is so quietly

    preparing for this fight without

his usual loud and brash pro-nouncements. He knows he’s infor a fight so he isn’t horsingaround. You don’t get to be 47-0 without being a smart andtough ring gladiator. He will doeverything to stop Pacquiao andavoid getting hit by the Pac-man’s awesome fists.

It is understandable though when fight fans engage me in adiscussion when they catch me

in a coffee shop, mall or restau-rant, they want me to confirmtheir belief that Pacquiao willconquer on May 2. They do notlike my guarded optimism.

But I know Pacquiao will beready come fight night and willlook for those angles and open-ings that will create the KO pos-sibilities. He and Freddie Roachknow that waltzing with May-

weather is not going to work and 47 previous opponentshave found that out.

Pacquiao is guaranteed aheavy payday no matter whathappens in the fight. But thepart of this duel that carriesmuch more weight is his battleon behalf of the ordinary folk

who will sit in the theaters or watch on TV. He would do noth-ing more than to win this fightof his life and bring euphoria toa nation aching for a reason torejoice for a change.
