“the suck”

No one was allowedto say “Mogadishu”

They had to say “the suck”

Summarizing

Use the technique: S, W, B, S, T

Teach techniques!

Page 46: Twin Rivers USD Breakout Session

Somebody Wanted But So

The Big Bad Wolf Pigs for dinner They hid in the brick house. He went hungry.

Anne Frank To hide from the Nazis Someone turned her in She died in a concentration camp.

Adolf Hitler To control all of Europe The Allies fought against him He killed himself when Germany was defeated.

Christopher Columbus To sail to India to buy spices He ran into the Caribbean Islands He claimed the area for Spain.

Thomas Edison To invent the incandescent lightbulb

His lightbulb blackened (the Edison effect)

It later led to the electron tube, the basis of the electronics

industry

Stephen Hawking To be a mathematician His father wanted him to be a chemist

He combined science and math to study black holes in

the universe.

Summarizing

S, W, B, S, T leads to SKILLED paraphrasing, this eliminates copy/paste

Summarizing is a TOP 5 way to raise scores - Marzano

Page 49: Twin Rivers USD Breakout Session

C.A.S.K.

Key quotes

Require a “key quote” from an article

Require them to be noted as first or third person

Key quotes are a kind of summary

Key quotes are a State Standard

Page 50: Twin Rivers USD Breakout Session

C.A.S.K.Key quotes

Page 51: Twin Rivers USD Breakout Session

It’s a PROCESS; Teach it.

Milestones

Teach it step by step.

Page 52: Twin Rivers USD Breakout Session

Graphix

Milestones

The last phase

Make sure the pics are authentic and sourced

Teach them to use things other than Google, it lowers the accuracy

Only one or two pics per slide or segment, they will try to jam you with graphics

Require a subtitle per slide

Page 53: Twin Rivers USD Breakout Session
Page 54: Twin Rivers USD Breakout Session

Disaster strikes!

Allow for more time, you’ll get the work

Explain how much faster it’ll go since they did it once already, right?Oh, and they have all their notes, too, right?

Page 55: Twin Rivers USD Breakout Session

Be complete, but as brief as possible in the instructions

Video clips are fine, but requlate them

Page 77: Twin Rivers USD Breakout Session

The basic concept behind the script is to enable teachers to quickly share documents with all of the students on a roster, monitor usage of shared documents, and give students feedback within that roster spreadsheet.

1984 In Pop Culture.

In Spongebob Squarepants one of the villains, Manray, takes over the world after Patrick ruins the future for Bikini Bottom. Propaganda is seen throughout the darker and more sinister Bikini Bottom, including posters stating that "Manray is watching you" as well as many other dystopian themed posters.

The Simpsons included a plotline in which Springfield is equipped with surveillance cameras. Ned Flanders is tasked with

manning the central and quickly becomes a Big Brother type figure.

Apple had a commercial for their first ever computer in which a figure like Julia is seen smashing a telescreen.

Big Brother the worldwide reality television show takes its name from

the novel.

An Important Things with Demetri Martin episode contains a sketch which parodies the experience of Winston Smith in Room 101
