D umelang! Sawubona! Molweni! My sincerest greetings to you

all and I welcome you to the first ever edition of a truly African student newspaper at UCT, Vernac News. It is with great pleasure and honour that I have been bestowed with this platform to address you, the African leaders of the future, and to deliver to you the first multilingual student newspaper at UCT. I would like to share with you today, the story behind the birth of Vernac News.

Browsing through a copy of Varsity, I was struck by an article whose title read “What is African about UCT?” which got me thinking and eventually lead me and my team on the incredible journey of creating Vernac News . Despite a few buildings being named after African anti-Apartheid activists and a large portion of UCT’s student and staff possessing a rich African heritage, nothing really comes close to provide an answer to this monumental question. And thus, I undertook the task of attempting to address this question myself.

Some agree that, one of the most powerful ways to express culture and to influence thinking is through language. Granted English is the first official language that comes to mind with regards to South Africa, it is not inherently African nor widely considered or used as a first language by the majority of South African citizens. Additionally, English fails to express the grandeur of

Founder & Editor-in-Chief Taariq Amod our diverse cultures and traditions and a large portion of who we are is lost as we increasingly neglect our languages. Our country is richly endowed with 10 other official languages which can better promote African culture and views and positively influence thought and perceptions in our society.

One of the platforms for conversation amongst students at UCT is Varsity News, which has been running for over 70 years. However despite its free access and wide readership across UCT, it is still provided entirely in English. In that view, I believe it isn’t truly representative of African culture or voices.

By offering a vernacular, multilingual newspaper, Vernac News will be able to provide a platform for UCT students that allows them to express themselves in their home language. The paper consists of informal or formal articles and other forms of written media such as poetry as we believe in promoting diversity in both our languages and forms of expression. Our hope is to encourage other students who don’t speak or read in one of the other official South African languages besides English, to take an interest in them and hopefully begin learning to read and understand these often neglected languages in academic spaces and at our institution. This is but one of the long term goals that this vehicle, Vernac News, seeks to address and achieve.

Whilst doing the research for this

paper, a survey was conducted, with under a 100 students participating, and the results indicated a more than two thirds majority showing support for this paper. Additionally, evidence shows that Isolezwe, a newspaper in Kwazulu-Natal published in Zulu was the only newspaper publication to have shown increased numbers in readership rather than a decline as did the other English headline newspapers. These two glowing examples of support show how this kind of newspaper has potential to succeed. Vernac News fills an important niche at UCT and is something that was long overdue given the amount of time since Varsity was initiated.

Together we can expand this initiative to include as many languages as possible as well as those from the rest of Africa allowing for the possibility to express and take pride in every culture of this beautiful continent and foster some form of African Pride for us all to exhibit boldly without shame. In the words of the great Steve Biko, “Being black isn’t a matter of skin pigmentation. Being black is a reflection of mental attitude.” Remarking on Mr Biko’s quote, I would say that this newspaper shows that being African is about mental attitude and aptitude and not determined by the pigmentation of our skin. Therefore we should unite in promoting, exploring and expressing African identity regardless of our colour or creed. In closing I will say…long live Vernac News!
