Image Based VR is a non-linear movie format, that enables users to work interactively with 2D/3D objects in a variety of ways that enhance visualization as compared to still images or linear movie files.Image Based VR movies can be viewed with an Internet browser when the proper plug-in viewer has been installed.This makes the format well suited for integration into web pages.

Image Based VR Movie Considerations:

1. Presentation Medium Before any decisions can be made about

the specific type of movie required a decision as to the presentation medium must be made.

Mediums can include Website, CD-ROM and Networked/Hard Disk Presentation, e.g highly compressed to minimize file size for online presentation.

2. Location Considerations as to the weather,

decoration and occupancy need to be taken into account when planning an Image Based VR Movie. For example: although there are staff in the room no other guests are in the photograph, as this would detract from the décor.

3. Virtual Tours If a virtual tour is to be provided around a

facility it can be accomplished in a number of ways, the Panoramic movies can be linked by adding hotspots. Alternatively a map can be provided of the facility and links added to the different movies.

4. Hotspots/map Only certain viewers/file formats support

hotspots. Hotspots are areas that have function assigned

to them by mouse click or roll over. Standard functions include linking to other

movies, providing text about the area of the movie and opening a hyperlink.

5. Sound Sound tracks can be used to put a

commentary over the movie or just background music.

Adding a soundtrack to a movie increases its size and this often outweighs the benefits for website usage.

6. Viewers / File Formats Panoramic VR images come in different file

formats and viewer combinations. Some require a plug-in and others do not. Plug-ins are normally free of charge, so the

user has to download and install on their PCs. Apple QuickTime is one of the most popular

and powerful viewers. Java Applets do not require any special

software, but must have a Java Enabled Browser.

1. OBJECT PANORAMA Use a turntable to spin a 3D

object through sequential constant angle movements in front of your camera until a 360° cycle has been completed.

Superimpose the images in the correct order using your chosen software to allow viewers to see the object from all angles.

2. SPHERICAL PANORAMA Use a special head plus a 185° fisheye lens. Take two

photos at 180° to each other, then stitch them together to create a 360° x 360° spherical panorama.

3. CYLINDRICAL PANORAMA Use a tripod to spin the camera around its nodal

point through a longitudinal sequence of constant angle shots on the same level which can be stitched together (basically… placed edge to edge) using a software to create a single row “cylindrical” panorama.

4. MULTI-ROW / CUBIC PANORAMA Use a special head to spin the camera around its

nodal point through both latitudinal and longitudinal sequences of constant angle shots which can then be stitched together and composite to create a multi-row “cubic” 360° x 360° panorama.
