Continued from page 1This week three schools were

lucky enough to receive the donations from Wayne and Tui, Wainuiomata High School, Konini Primary School and St Claudines Thevenet.

“The money goes to whatever the school wants to use it for,” says Wayne.

The pair has raised $3000 dollars in the fi ve months that they have been running the scheme.

“$3000 is good, in the offi ce there is an agreement that it is only the houses that we list and sell,” he says.

Wainuiomata High School Principal Martin Isberg says that the money was great to get.

“We are going to put it in a scheme where it rewards the students for showing the values of the High School,” he says.

“This means that they could

be given out as food vouchers, get the cost of the ball off, and other benefi ts.”

Konini Principal says the school was uncertain of what they were going to use but it is a great boost.

“It means that we will be able to afford something that we did not budget for,” she says.

“Our money only goes so far, we need to think what is most important for the children, a little bit means a lot.”

St Caludines Thevenet Prin-cipal says the money has come at a great time.

“We will put it towards a new Big Screen for a Fale, we are a big singing school so we use that for our singing,” she says.

The School recently got bro-ken into and the screen was one of the things that were taken so the money has come around at the perfect time.

A locals concern about the Wainuiomata River was put forward to the Wainuiomata Community Board in an at-tempt to get the board to support his fi ght.

Bill Boyce has been fi ght-ing the Greater Wellington Regional Council about how the river fl oods for years, and wants to get some help.

“Catchpool Stream has changed its course and is six times wider than what it used

to be,” he says.“The banks are collapsing

and for many months of the year the river is dry.”

This is affecting the local fi shery as trout are not able to get up the stream and spawn.

Another problem is that the stream has a cobble base, which means that instead of water going over the top of the rocks and the base of the stream, they go underneath.

This is part of the cause that an island has formed just down from Bill’s property, which is

causing problems for residents in the area.

“I am not allowed to remove the island, and I cannot make the regional council budge,” Bill says.

“I have sent emails to all senior members of the council, and none have replied, it is an economic disaster.”

One thing stopping the re-moval of the island will be spawning season which starts in May, so no work can be completed in the river during that time.

“For us to do anything in the river, we need resource consent, which costs tens of thousands of dollars,” Bill says.

Bill says that someone needs to get in touch with DOC, as every time there is a major rainfall the Catchpool Stream comes out yellow.

“They need to reform the stream and the river using big machinery, we do have the resource,” Bill says.

“It has become a real night-mare for us.”

Wild Kiwi around Wainuio-mata are about to get safer due to the Kiwi Zone in the Rimutaka Forest Park over doubling in size.

Kiwi Co-ordinator for the Park Melody McLaughlin says that there is now over 100 kiwi calling the park home.

“The population is continu-ing to grow, with young birds from previous years roaming and searching for territory and mates,” She says.

“Brown kiwi are territorial and the real estate in a large area of the protected zone is already taken by adult breeding pairs.”

The additional traps were funded by the Community Conservation Partnership fund, which is managed by DOC.

Neighbouring land owners and the Greater Wellington Regional Council support this by allowing the traps to be set on their land.

The Orongorongo Club, Scots College and the Bush Fire Force helped deploy the nearly 200 traps.

Kiwis spreading their wings

The trust will also be utilizing new trapping methods in the form of self re-setting traps.

“These traps will create a buffer around the existing network of traps, expanding the pest controlled area from 2800

hectares to 7000 hectares,” says Melody.

The main predators to be targeted are stoats and dogs, both domestic and hunting.

Dogs are a great danger to kiwi, so to avoid the risk, the

trust runs kiwi avoidance train-ing for dogs.

New Zealand’s only eco fash-ion runway is coming to the Hutt Valley this June.

The date is set as June 9 to 13 and is expected to be the biggest yet.

As always the event will showcase how fashion can be sustainable, ethical and cutting edge, with examples from all over New Zealand and the world.

Event Director Denise An-glesey says the event is sure to capture the imagination.

“It has a perfect fusion of style and innovation to bring ethical products to the fore-front of fashion.”

“We’ve received queries from across the globe, and are thrilled with early interest from designers.”

Local brands Dane Dagger and Heke Design are joining the show for a third year along

with newcomers Recreate.Since its inception in 2013,

international interest has sparked an expansion to a full four-day schedule.

This includes two runway shows, styling events, an ex-clusive movie screening and pop-up shops.

Denise is excited to offer a comprehensive schedule for the event.

“We are working towards a comprehensive calendar and

a pretty impressive line-up,” she says.

The event provides the opportunity for established designers to showcase their collections under the ethical spotlight.

There are also categories for new and student designers, as well as eco-related businesses and organisations.

School Holiday Workshops

Wainuiomata High School is run-ning a series of Workshops over the holidays to help their students catch up in work.

Teachers have come in over the holidays to aid students in catching up with work in subjects they may be behind in.

The school has done this for many years and say it is valuable for stu-dents to get one on one time with a teacher instead of a classroom situation. The timetable for this is on the

schools newsletter, also check out the schools facebook page.

A lm explaining what it was like on the front line at Gallipoli is being shown on the night after ANZAC Day.

This includes Narrations from diaries of soldiers that fought on the front line during the battle.

This is being shown at the Dowse Square at 6.30pm, and everyone is encouraged to come along and see what it was like.

This year marks the 100th anniver-sary of the battle, and this is one of the many ways to remember those that died.

By Colin Ryder

OK, folks, unlike the movie, this river does not run through a ranch in Montana, and sorry, ladies, but there is no Brad Pitt on the scene.

I’m referring to the Wainuio-mata River which runs for about three kilometres of Baring Head before emptying through an ephemeral lagoon into the ocean.

The river has left behind about 60 hectares of aptly named fl ood plain with oxbow wetlands reminding us that its current river course is not permanent.

The floodplain, lagoon and oxbows are all important ecosys-tems in their right but I will focus on the river itself in this article.

It has also been classifi ed as a “River of National Importance”, with good and healthy popula-tions of several native fishes, most of which are under threat.

Waterfowl take advantage of it and there are a number of rare and endangered plants species residing along its banks and in its associated wetlands.

Unfortunately, while there is an area in Baring Head identifi ed as spawning habitat for whitebait species, further upstream there are mostly no overhangs or plants to shade or strengthen the river margins, as well as provide root masses and other habitat features.

Signifi cant slumping and ero-sion caused in part by this lack

of vegetative cover contributes to the destruction of native fi sh habitat.

Further enrichment plantings is needed to extend and enhance the existing spawning sites.

It’s therefore not surprising that the river is one of the main ecosystems being targeted by the Friends of Baring Head and the Greater Wellington Regional Council for restoration as part of their 10 year Biodiversity Action Plan.

It has already been fenced off to prevent further damage by stock and a total of 13 sites have been identifi ed for planting of native species to improve the health of the river, stabilise its banks and provide better

and larger spawning areas for whitebait.

Plantings will being taken place in fi ve of these over the next few months and, as always, your help would be welcomed

Contact me on 478 4391 or at [email protected] if you would like to follow up.On a personal level, I believe that the river as a whole can be even more of an asset to the residents of the valley, and to the region as a whole, than what it is now in its somewhat degraded state.

April 2 saw world Autism day take place and autistic people around the country took time to celebrate the unique and special things they contribute to New Zealand.

Autism New Zealand focuses on creating supportive environ-

ments and paving ways forward for people with autism.

Multicoloured Mayhem Day is a day of celebration honour-ing the differences of people with Autism Spectrum Disor-der (ASD).

Dressing up in multicolour can be seen as an expression of the variety of ways in which the

disorder can present.Autism New Zealand CE

Dane Dougan says: “World Autism Awareness Day is an opportunity for all schools and organisations in New Zealand to raise awareness and under-standing of ASD,”

in multicolour, like a rainbow, or fi nd their own way to add a little colour to the world.”

Autism has a massive impact on New Zealand society; over 50,000 people are affected by the condition.

Hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders have family members, colleagues, students and friends on the autism spectrum.

“World Autism Awareness Day helps shine a bright light on Autism Spectrum Disor-ders, including the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention,” Dougan says.

Additionally, WAAD events celebrate the unique talents and skills of people with autism.

By bringing together autism organisations all around the world, Autism New Zealand believes that WAAD will give a voice to the millions of individuals worldwide who are facing the challenges autism brings, and bring hope to people who may, as yet, be undiagnosed.

One of Wainuiomata’s most tagged fences will be getting its own mural thanks to the students at Rangatahi Learning Centre.

The students have been researching and drawing inspiration from the history of Wainuiomata, and all the designs are the students work.

The Students and their teacher showcased their research and designs to the Commu-nity Board at the meeting this week.

Teacher Trish Morgan says that the fence chosen is heavily tagged.

“It was where the old Rangatahi was, and we spent many years painting the fence to cover up the tagging,” she says.

One of the teachers Ranga says that students have drawn inspiration from many sources, all with the history of Wainuiomata.

“It is their research and their design, all the students have researched this themselves,” he says.

One of the students used the hills as inspiration.

She designed the hills into a shape of a woman, which symbolized mother earth.

“We were looking at mother earth and sustainability, we are still working on it though,” says Ranga.

“We visited Wainuiomata Museum, where lots of inspiration came from,” says Trish

Another student designed a lighthouse that was to look over mother earth.

There was also a design resembling the farming history in Wainuiomata, designing a mural with blades.

Also a soul was designed representing a student’s family as well as the Wainuiomata River.

The plan was also to have footprints all over the mural which will represent all the cultures in Wainuiomata.

“We were shocked to fi nd that there are 17 different cultures in Wainuiomata,” says Trish.

The entire Community Board thanked the students for doing the mural, saying that it is great that they are taking on such a task.

Councillor Margaret Willard says that she was hoping that there would be something like this in Wainuiomata for some time.

The fence is at the back of the Whai Oranga Medical Centre, where the school was located prior to the shift to Parkway.

A new mobility park has been proposed on Queen Street making it easier for people to get into the chemist for their medication.

The original plan put forward to the Wainuiomata Community Board was to relocate the current mobility park from the other side of the road to in front of Clives Chemist.

This was in response to requests from clients of the pharmacy who fi nd it diffi cult to cross the road form the current location.

In response to this, the board has agreed

to the new park, but has recommended that the current park remains as well.

This came up when board members asked if they could keep the original one due to it being easy to get in and out of the car with an open door as there is no park next to it.

Board member Richard Sinnott says he supported keeping the second park, and that was followed by all of the other members.

Terry Stallworth who was chairing the meeting forwarded that the board would like the new respective park as well as adding the new park in front of the chemist.

Wainuiomata will be treated to a concert on the eve of Anzac day thanks to the Wainuiomata Pioneer Church.

The church will once again be playing host to the Kiwi Concert Group who will be performing for the second year in a row.

Church President Joyce Lockyer says that the show has been very popular in the past and looks like it will be again.

“Many residents missed out last year and those who came are lining up for tickets again it was just so good,” she says.

The show is being held at 7pm on April 24 inside the Church on the Coast Road, which has recently been refurbished.

There was a clash of times last year with

Anzac services so that is when the decision was made to have the concert on the day before.

“Last year's Concert was brilliant success but many attendees were unable to attend due to a clash with Anzac Day services,” says Joyce.

“The Group have agreed to do a repeat performance and to avoid any clash we are hosting this on Anzac Eve.”

There is limited seating at the church so it is vital that people must get in early to make sure that they get to see the concert.

“To attend such an event is the ideal way to start Anzac celebrations for this momentous year,” says Joyce. For more information and to book tickets please contact Joyce on 5648135.

Many families take great joy in caring for their elderly loved ones so they can stay in their family home. However, without sup-port it’s common for the family caregiver to become physically and emotionally exhausted.

This is one reason Enliven’s rest homes across the greater Wellington region, including Woburn Home in Lower Hutt, offers short term respite and convalescent care.

Anneke Barkwith, clinical manager at Enliven’s Woburn Home, says respite pro-vides the rest, recovery and space the carer needs to refresh themselves so they can continue providing the best possible care.

“Caring for someone can be very reward-ing, but it can also be very demanding and tiring work, both physically and emotion-ally. Respite allows caregivers to have a break and focus on their own wellbeing,” Anneke explains.

Respite has two main aims; carer relief and socialisation for the elder.

“Caring is a full time job for partners or family, so it means they can have a break. They can still continue with their own lives while having peace of mind that their loved one is receiving the best quality care.”

Anneke says respite is not only benefi cial for the carer, but for the elder too.

“It means they can socialise and build friendships with people at a similar stage of life.

“Sometimes people with mobility issues or memory problems can become quite isolated; respite care helps to combat that.”

Enliven’s respite care can be for a few hours a day through the day activity programme, a few days, or longer periods,

depending on the needs of the person and their caregiver.

“Often respite care is subsidised by the district health board. They will be assessed by a care coordination agency to see how many days of respite they can have each year, then they organise respite care when they need it.”

Alternatively, some families choose to pay for the respite care privately.

Enliven offers a full range of positive ageing services across the greater Wel-lington region. This includes independent retirement living, such as Woburn Retire-ment Apartments, rest home, hospital and dementia care, such as Woburn Home, and in-home support services aimed at maximising people’s independence. Taking a break with Woburn Home

By Aaron Meredith

A Wainuiomata Local is continuing the fight against Amalgamation and has ap-plauded the Community Board for what they have done in the fi ght.

Mike Grigg spoke to the Wai-nuiomata Community Board this week explaining why he

feels the Local Government Commission has treated the community badly.

“The commissioner has not come to our community and spoken to us,” he says.

“New Zealanders have a right to have their say in this debate, this is where human rights come in.”

Mike also urged the board

to explain on how the com-munity can support the Hutt City Council which is against the idea of Amalgamation.

“I would like you to get around the community and speak on how we can support the council,” he says.

The community board sub-mitted a proposal on behalf of the community that was

against the amalgamation of the current council system.

This came along with many other submissions that were ei-ther for or against the proposal.

These submissions could force a referendum which will be binding.

Mike also says that he wants to the current term “Supercity” to stop being used as it sounds

too much like Auckland which he says was not a success.

If amalgamated, the entire greater Wellington region in-cluding the Wairarapa and Kapiti Coast would come under the one council.

Wainuiomata would possibly lose its community board, and have representatives in the Lower Hutt Ward instead.

War against Amalgamation continues

For the first time in over 20 years Wainuio-mata will have a team competing in senior competitions in Hockey.

Through hard work and commitment from a core group, the senior club was reestablished as a means to keep talented players in the valley.

Wainuiomata has a very helpful junior club, which includes a number of teams from various age grades.

It is these players that the club wants to main-tain and keep playing for Wainuiomata.

Included in the team are a number of age group representative players as well as Whit-ney Morgan, who is a

New Zealand Masters representative.

Whitney will be travel-ling to Melbourne to compete in the Trans-Tasman masters tourna-ment that will be taking place next month.

The club has plans to expand the club next season so results are crucial this year.

There already has been a positive result with the team defeating Upper Hutt in a grading game 5-2 and Maidstone Park.

Also the club is want-ing to re surface the as-tro turf from the courts at Wainuiomata High School, after the wind tore up the turf that was down originally.

For more information about the team please contact the club.

Senior team set to rock into season

This season A1 Homes Wai-nuiomata Colts have started off as they did last year.

They have won all 4 preseason games scoring 20 tries to four.

They have played against Ava-lon, College old boys from Palm-erston North, OBU and Poneke.

This past weekend The Colts played their fi rst and only grad-ing game playing Poneke for the second week in a row.

In wet conditions at Trentham Memorial Park Wainui held off

a strong attacking play from Poneke for the fi rst 10 minutes of the game.

Coming back strong Wainuio-mata looked to gain dominance over Poneke attacking their line before crossing for our fi rst try to Lotomau Aliivaa.

A penalty try was added to the score before Poneke fought back when Wainuiomata were reduced to 14 players.

Final score was 17-14 with Wainuiomata dominating most of the game.

With that win it sees Wai-

nuiomata gain promotion into 1st division. Wainuiomata’s player of the day was Caleb Nicholas.

With a week off due to the Easter break it gives the colts a chance to rest up on some injuries gained throughout pre-season.

The team is looking forward to a good strong season.

Also the team and coaches would like to thank their two sponsors also for helping us out during the season, A1 homes Petone and Firestone Wainuio-mata.

Division One beckons for Colts

By Aaron Meredith

Jake Whitaker has had a positive start to the endure season this year.

He has recently competed in Round Three of the National Enduro Series and says that the event went really well.

“I felt really strong on the bike all day and was able to push a lot harder than normal,” says Jake.

“One of the terrain tests was set in pines and was to my liking as it was fairly technical.”

Jake managed his fi rst ever ter-rain test and was able to make it up to second overall behind Chris Birch.

This came along with a win in the 0-300 four stroke class.

In the fi rst round of the North Island Trials Champs, Jake hoped back on the Trial bike for the fi rst time since November last year.

“This was also my fi rst outing on the new 2015 Gas Gas Racing 300

which was really cool,” he says. After a rusty start to things Jake

slowly came to grips of things again and stayed ahead of the rest of the fi eld to pick up an overall win on the Sunday.

“Sections were set at a great level with some challenging slippery creeks through to steep hill climbs out of muddy bogs,” he says.

In the last weekend Jake compet-ed in the Taranaki Hard Enduro, up at Mount Damper.

The race is very demanding and Jake turned a fi fth row start to hit the lead early on in the race.

“I was having heaps of fun out on the track enjoyed every bit of it, tried to make as little mistakes as possible and stay out in front, the hard technical track suits my riding with my trials background,” he says.

“There were defi nitely moments in the day I wish I had a trials bike when lifting over and up banks.”

Jake starts off Enduros positively

The race took just over two hours, and Jake fi nished fi rst ahead of Greg Delatour and Paul Whibley.

This week sees the start of The Masters, one of if not the top golf tournament in the world.

One question is, who of us from outside golf circles know who the top guys are?

If you ask any one on the street who will win The Masters they most likely will say Tiger Woods.

This is plainly because most people only know of golf thanks to him and the media circus that follows him on the course and off it.

Tiger however is now not even in the world’s top 100, although having time off due to injuries may have helped in this.

To be honest, from a guy who looks from a perspective of a non-fan of the sport, Tiger has not been the same since the incident a few years back now, we all remember that one.

There are many other players that most likely will fi nish well ahead of Tiger this year.

Last year’s defending Champion Bubba Watson, will be one of these, he is now a two time winner of the tournament and is ranked number three in the world.

The world number one is Rory McIlroy, he is what many have called the new Tiger, even I have heard of him and my golfi ng knowledge goes as far as the fi lm Happy Gilmour.

Adam Scott is another title contender, he won The Masters two years ago, and is a former world number one.

If you turn on one of Sky’s many channels that they have decided to put up, I guarantee you that Tiger will be plastered everywhere.

I reckon just hold on a couple of days, and enjoy the rest of the golfers once he misses the cut after the second round.

And for those of you wondering, no Lydia Ko cannot win The Masters either, although if she was in the tournament I believe she would fi nish higher than Tiger.

How many golfers can you name?

The Wainuiomata Premiers continued what is turning out to be a good start to the season with a 35-7 victory away at Johnsonville.

After Johnsonville showed some signs of causing Wainuiomata trouble, their momentum was quickly halted when Tyler Tane scored an intercept try giving the traveling team an early lead.

Another try to winger Hokianga Mo-runga as well as a monster penalty to Tane, from well inside his own half gave Wainuiomata an early lead playing with a strong wind behind them.

Johnsonville then took advantage of prop David Va’a being given a yellow card with a try to Ha’mea Ahio, although

there were claims that the ball was never grounded.

The Halftime score was 16-7, and with Johnsonville turning to play with the wind, things looked promising for the home team.

This however never eventuated, as the Wainuiomata backs looked to attack at every opportunity they had.

Their slick backline work proved too much for Johnsonville to handle, as well as some strong defence stopping whatever attacks the home team threw at the visitors.

Tries to Jason Matehe, Teru Time and John Monu came, and Wainuiomata left with the comfortable victory.

This leaves the Premiers in fi fth on the table on 12 points.

In the Premier Reserve Grade Wai-nuiomata easily defeated Johnsonville by 57-11, continuing their win streak to start the season.

They are sitting in second place on the table on 13 points, two points behind Tawa who are on top.

Next week sees the club fi nally return to William Jones Park, after the ground has had a major facelift over the summer.

Both teams are playing Oriental Ron-gotai, the Premier Reserves are playing at 12.45pm and the Premiers are playing at 2.30pm

Also keep an eye out for other teams playing this week, all draws should be put on clubrugby.co.nz/wellington or through wrfu.co.nz

The Wainuiomata Tennis club held its annual family day last month and it was a great success.

There was a high number of junior entries this year, so much so that club junior covener Julie Day says they had to split the tourna-ment into two sections.

"Each junior member entered the tourna-ment with an older family member,” she says.

”The older juniors played for the Hall Cup and the younger ones from fi ve to nine years old played for the brand new Dulux Cup.”

In all 17 teams and 34 players vied for the trophies on the day, with everyone playing well and having a blast.

"Even through the light drizzle all the teams had a brilliant day,” says Julie.

The winners of the Hall Cup were Katie Easthope and her dad Joe, the Dulux Cup winners were Conner Keall and his mum Jennymae Keall.

The runners up were Lee Stapp and Nicole Nicole Foskett-Hay for the Dulux, and Alex and Jacob Renor for the Hall.

The club is already looking forward to next seasons compe-tition which generally begins in November.

The club also hosted the War-ren TePaa Junior Classic, with many visiting teams competing

the tournament was a great success.

Also Hunter Rhodes won the club’s corner to corner competi-tion with Graham Williams being the runner up.

Shane Battocks reached the semifi nal of the centre junior champion of champions event.
