Parents and community join B-B kindergarteners to celebrate holidaysA standing-room-only audience of

more than 200 filled the Elementary Cafetorium at Byron-Bergen Elemen-tary School on December 21 to hear the school’s kindergarteners greet the holiday season with music.

The annual Holidays Around the World event is the culmination of the children’s study of world cultural diversity through understanding holi-day customs. This year, the program featured songs and carols highlighting

seasonal traditions from Germany, Mexico, Israel and England.

Teacher Melissa Chamberlain pre-sented the program, introducing the students from her kindergarten class and the classes of fellow teachers Beth Amidon, Shana Feissner and Lori Sim-mons. Accompanist and former kinder-garten teacher, Marsha MacConnell, who has been part of the proceedings for many years, played the piano.

and wearing elf hats they made them-selves, the children enthusiastically launched into their performance. Songs included a demanding Spanish rendi-tion of “Casca Bells,” “Oh Christmas Tree” from Germany, complete with dancing trees, and “Deck the Halls,” which celebrated the English tradition of caroling.

The young performers also repre-sented the lighting of the Hanukkah menorah with a version of “I’ve Been

Lighting All the Candles.” Favorite songs did not go forgotten: “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Jingle Bells,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” were all part of the fun.

After the singing concluded, parents and students enjoyed punch and cook-ies and had the opportunity to speak with hosts Principal Brian Meister and Assistant Principal Amanda Cook, along with the kindergarten teachers.

Scott Spear of Roches-ter, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), recently completed an intense, hands-on research project in Moscow. The project was titled, “Redesigning PwC Russia’s Careers Website.”

At WPI, all under-graduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to address an important societal need or issue. About two-thirds of stu-dents complete a project at one of the university’s more than 45 off-campus project centers, which are located around the world.

A signature element of the innovative under-graduate experience at WPI, the project-based curriculum offers stu-dents the opportunity to apply their scientific and technical knowledge to develop thoughtful solutions to real problems that affect the quality of people’s lives - and make a difference before they graduate.

“The WPI project-based curriculum’s focus on global studies brings students out of the class-room and their comfort zones and into the global community to apply their knowledge to solve real problems,” said Profes-sor Richard Vaz, dean of the WPI Interdisciplin-ary and Global Studies Division. “Students are immersed in all aspects of a different culture, from the way people live and work to the values they hold to the foods they eat - all valuable perspec-tives for surviving and thriving in today’s global marketplace. They also learn the meaning and magic of teamwork; make a real and meaningful difference in their host community; and gain a competitive edge for any resume, or graduate or professional school ap-plication.”

More than 500 candi-dates graduated December 12 from Emporia State University, Emporia, Kan-sas. Students from the area that received their degrees include: •Jacob Joseph John-son of North Chili, with a master of science degree in health, physical education and recreation. •Andrew Hilton of Rochester, with a master of science degree in health, physical education and recreation.

Ruth Spragins of Brockport received academic honors from Milwawkee School of Engineering for the 2015 fall quarter. In order to achieve honors, a student must have earned a GPA of 3.2 or higher for the quarter. Ruth is work-ing towards a bachelor of science degree in architec-tural engineering.

Matthew Bevan-Per-kins, a native of Spen-cerport and Commercial Music Performance major at Belmont University, performed recently in the “Christmas at Belmont” concert at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center, a performance which was taped live and aired nationally this holi-day season on PBS.

Hosted by two-time Grammy winner Kathy Mattea, more than 700 student musicians joined the Belmont School of Music faculty and the Nashville Children’s Choir for the taping of “Christmas at Belmont.” The annual production of traditional carols, classical masterworks, world music and light-hearted seasonal favorites, produced by Nashville Public Televi-sion (NPT), premiered on PBS on December 21 with an encore broadcast on Christmas Eve.
