    What factors can affect theirperformance?

    The job requirements of referees haveexpanded tremendously in recent years.

    If the right decisions are to be made, whatwe need are not 'walking rule books', butrather individuals with leadership skills

    and the keen eyes and ears of an expert,people who can put themselves intogame situations and make appropriate

    decisions.

    top referees need to mature from checkingthe rules and applying them in many differentsituations to become diplomats on the court!

    referees must have the courage to makeunpopular decisions, even going againstpressure from the crowd, and be braveenough to admit to their own errors in anappropriate way

    referees must exude self-confidence and besure of their own performance; uncertaintyautomatically leads to stressful situations

    style = recognition of all those involved, theability to create a good atmosphere in hecticgames, without needing to be perfect

    referees must not be neurotic about theirimage or feel the need to prove themselves(frustration at home or at work, etc.)

    Summary

    Good referees need to be flexible, act in theproper manner, concentrate, be committed

    and

    exude authority without being power mad

    You must have personal charisma, technicalknow-how and an understanding of the game

    be able to solve conflicts and withstandpressure from spectators, officials and the

    media.
