Xiaoliuqiu,Little Liuqiu, orLamay Island(Chinese:;pinyin:Xio Liqi) is an island belonging toTaiwanadministered asLiuqiu Township(;Liqi Xing) ofPingtun County It has an area of 6.8km and lies 15km (8nautical miles) west ofDonggang; it is Taiwan's only largecoral island. Etymology and namesiaoliuqiu has been known by a number of names in its history.Lamay(also Lambay or Lamey), formerly the most common English name for the island, is a name that most probably originates from aTaiwanese aboriginal language.Golden Lion Islandis another historical English name for the island.Two years prior to the beginning ofDutch rulein Taiwan, a Dutch ship named theGolden Lion:Gouden Leeuw) was wrecked on the coral reefs of the isle. After the Dutch took control of the island, they renamed itGouden Leeuwseylant("Golden Lion Island") as a memorial to the crew who were killed by the native inhabitants.After theRepublic of Chinatook control of Taiwan, the island was administrated under the nameLiuqiu Township as a part ofPingtung County, the only island township of the county.
