The city and area around Schio have ancient roots in the textile industry.Tradition and research have kept it in the forefront of textile technology since the 16th
Century. In the 1500’s the Republic of Venice endorsed 14 weaving handlooms and later gave the region the honour of manufacturing “top quality cloth”. Year after year, century after century, the people ofSchio have added to their wealth of experience.
The first important woollen and spinning mills built on an industrial scale were seen here in the early 19th Century. It was against this background that the company SMIT was founded.
In 1958 the world’s first flexible-ribbon weaving machine - the renowned TD model - was produced and won immediate acclaim for its versatility, the high quality of the fabric produced and its operational simplicity.
