[1] United Nations special diplomat Ibrahim Gambari has met with Burmese leader Than Shwe. The two men met in Naypyitaw Burma. Mr. Gambari was expected to urge General Than Shwe and his government to stop its repression of protestors, to release political detainees, and move toward democratic reform. Mr. Gambari later met for a second time with detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The diplomat then left Burma. Last week, Burmese forces used tear gas and sticks against democracy activists demonstrating in Rangoon.

[2] South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun is in Pyongyang for meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. Thousands of cheering North Koreans welcomed President Roh as his vehicle arrived in the city. Mr. Kim did not smile when he welcomed the South Korean leader. The two men are to have their first official talks on Wednesday. It is the second meeting between the leaders of North and South Korea since a truce ended the Korean War in 1953. Mr. Roh has said his goal for the talks is to support peace efforts between the two countries. Some critics wonder whether his goal can be reached during the meetings.

[3] The government of Pakistan has decided to cancel corruption charges against former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz discussed the charges Tuesday with government ministers. Pakistan's railways minister says the ministers and top officials agreed to the idea of dropping the old charges against Ms. Bhutto. The former prime minister served in office two times between 1988 and 1996. She left the country to live in exile after her government was dismissed and she was accused of financial wrong doing.

[5] British Prime Minister Gordon Brown says he believes 1,000 British troops could be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of the year. Mr. Brown said he believes Iraqi forces will be prepared to take control of security in the southern province of Basra in the next two months. He spoke in Baghdad after meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Mr. al-Maliki confirmed that Iraq was ready to take control of security responsibilities from British forces.
