Greetings in Christ! God’s blessings have filled our community, and Saint Nicholas has remained our steadfast, active, and faithful

benefactor these inaugural 25 years . Words and pictures in ink in this booklet can scarcely capture but a few highlights, as you will see beginning on page 4 . Be sure to look online at the St . Nicholas website, StNicholas–Cedarburg .org, for more photo memories . And if you don’t already have one, get a copy of Fr . Bill’s priceless collection of homilies . See page 5 for an excerpt and page 22 for ordering information . His book is a genuine treasure to share and pass along to future generations . Many thanks to Tony Kashinn for his moral support and photographic magic in creating this book . Thanks also to those who donated photos, volunteers

who helped put together our celebration, advertisers and supporters, all the past members of Council, committee members, and those who have chanted, read, taught, sung, cooked, decorated, donated, greeted, chanted, cleaned, polished, visited, sewn, and prayed . As several parishioners share on page 8, your prayers—especially deep and heartfelt—benefit us all . Thank you! I apologize deeply to all whom we were unable to include in photographs, acknowledgements, or in any other way . God bless you and please know you are as important to our congregation as anyone . Let us remember as we have these past 25 years that Love is the most important of all . May we continue to obey Christ’s new commandment to love one another as He did, and do our best to live our lives as His true disciples for ages unto ages . Amen .

With Love In Christ,Laurel A . Kashinn

Welcome, Your Grace,Bishop Anthony!

I am convinced that in the year 1985 earth time, the Lord Jesus must have said to Saint Nicholas, “We need an Orthodox church on the north side of

Milwaukee. Go work on that Olnhausen fellow.” Sometimes we remember things wrong, so I went

back to the original source, my travel journal, written at the Orthodox Academy on Crete where I was attending a conference.

Saturday, August 3, 1985 Wonderful! Such joy! Bishop Irenaeus is a holy

man. This is the way the church should be... Don't forget the bishop's face: serene, holy, happy. Two weeks later in Athens I saw his face again in an

icon store near the cathedral.

Saturday, August 17th, 1985 St. Nicholas icon has the happy holy look of the

Cretan bishop.Only later did I come to see that it was Irenaeus who

looked like Nicholas. (Many Orthodox bishops eventually come to look more or less like Saint Nicholas, for he is the prototype Orthodox pastor.)

I had to have that icon, that face of Bishop Irenaeus, so I spent considerably more than I intended and bought the Saint Nicholas icon. Though I didn’t yet know it, Saint Nicholas already had me on my way to Orthodoxy.

Final Entry, August, 1985 The Greek church has a remarkable integration

with everyday life—icons in buses, stores, cabs, houses. The Church is concerned with social needs of people. It seems to go far deeper than the Christian veneer of Western Europe. Why?I felt I had to know. I had to find out why. And you can

see what it led to.It felt natural when I came home from Greece to

hang my new icon on the wall of my Episcopal church in Mequon and light a candle before him. Now I was to learn how icons work. One day a woman said to me, “Have you noticed how his expression changes?”

“No...” I said, and started watching. Sure enough, not that the paint moved. It didn’t. I

can’t explain it, but sometimes he was happy, sometimes sad, sometimes stern, sometimes pleased.

Someone said, “It’s just reflecting your feelings at the moment.” So I began to check that. Sometimes this was so, sometimes not. Sometimes I would be in a good mood and he would be looking very displeased, or it could be the reverse.

The truth was, I was not often in a good mood. I was discovering that I needed to be Orthodox; that Orthodoxy was what I had always believed; that I had been trying to be Orthodox outside the Orthodox Church. I new I needed to go home.

While this was a wonderful discovery, I couldn't imagine how to do it, for we had a family, one child in college, one nearing college age. How could we afford to make the change? And as a pastor, I felt I couldn’t just abandon my people. Was there a way to make my Episcopal church into an Orthodox church? Again, I couldn’t imagine.

One evening, I was in a particularly glum mood, depressed, frustrated. I walked over and looked at Saint Nicholas. You can see how he had already drawn

FATHER BILL agreed with C.S. Lewis: “Prayer is like learning the multiplication tables” and is difficult for most people. The structure provided by public prayer —Matins, Vespers, and Liturgy—helps. He loves worship, recommends the Jesus Prayer, and suggests using a breathing meditation technique. On the exhalation “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,” on the inhalation “have mercy on me, a sinner.” Every morning while doing laps in the swimming pool at the YMCA, he prays the Trisagion, prays to the Theotokos, and prays for each parish member.

DEACON JOHN MCQUIDE, May His Memory Be Eternal. “It is important when praying,” he said, “that the head and the heart be in league. It was only when my head and heart came into alignment that the Holy Spirit came into me and answered my prayer to be relieved of the desire for alcohol.” Deacon John found it helpful to pray with icons and to light candles. “Take time to light the candles. It’s not the same if the candles are not lit.” At home his practice was to stand in front of an icon of the Holy Trinity. He suggested picking something that rings true for you, whether it is a Psalm or prayer, “although prayer does not require words. Just set aside time regularly.” He also recommended keeping a list of people to pray for. Through prayer he grew closer to his

father and friends who have passed, he said. “The single most important thing in praying: keep in mind that Jesus Christ is God.” His number one tip for getting over the difficulty of getting back to prayer after having been away: confession.

JULIE WERNER also appreciated the structure provided by church. She begins her prayers asking God and the Holy Spirit to descend, and asks Satan to go away “because he is invariably there.” She resonates to this prayer of St. Francis of Assisi: “O Lord, what I am in your sight, that I am, and nothing more.” She uses the Jesus Prayer or others similar to begin. “But sometimes the words aren’t there any more and I need to be very still.” Some people find stillness difficult. “Do not be afraid of the empty spaces in your middle,” she said. “Acknowledge that the emptiness is a place for God that others cannot fill.” She also advised to always remember that prayer is not just for you alone. Prayer keeps the whole body of Christ well. Heartfelt prayer benefits us all.

ZOE GANOS said learning the prayers in English made a huge difference since coming to St. Nicholas. Matins and Vespers have been very enriching, and she particularly appreciates St. Basil’s Liturgy. She says she doesn’t swim laps, but she does say the Jesus Prayer while on her exercise bike.

All About Prayer: Highlights from the Round-Table Discussion at St. John Chrysostom Monastery on a St. Nicholas Retreat, October, 2000

WYou are stones of the Father’s temple, made ready for

the edifice of God the Father, raised to the heights by the crane—the cross—of

Jesus Christ, and using the Holy Spirit for a rope. Your faith is your upward guide and

love is the way that leads up toward God. So you are all companions on the way,

God-bearers and shrine-bearers, Christ-bearers, bearers of holy things.

Saint Ignatius of Antioch Letter to the Ephesians

In the fall of 1994, we purchased the former First Immanuel Church. The first service was on December 5, 1994. Consecration by Bishop ANTOUN was in September, 1995. (Line art drawing by Bill Ohde, Jr.*)

For the first nine months the mission served Liturgy at the Mequon Women’s Club, and from 1991 until 1994 at the the old Lindenwood School in Mequon. For five years, every Sunday, the icons and all supplies were carried in and out, and weekday services were held at the Olnhausen’s condo.

me into relationship with him. And for the first and only time (I’ve never been able to see this again in the icon), he looked smug, like the proverbial cat who had swallowed the canary. I lost my cool.

“How can you hang there on that wall looking so pleased with yourself, when I am so miserable?” I said.

And then, and I don’t mean I literally heard words, it wasn’t like that, I can’t explain it, he told me that he had Saint Nicholas Church well under way, and if I didn’t get in his way it was all going to be just fine.

After that, things began to move. Not that I relaxed about it. Often, I was a nervous wreck. But Saint Nicholas kept at it. I was invited to visit a weeping icon at Saint Nicholas Albanian Orthodox Church in Chicago, where I was given the courage to go back to my church and start talking about Orthodoxy. About this time, a couple of quite amazing things happened to move me towards Orthodoxy and into the Antiochian Archdiocese, but that is also another story.

How Saint Nicholas Came to Becontinued from page 5

Finally, my Episcopalian bishop fired me for promoting Orthodoxy. I said I wasn’t leaving without that icon. That was no problem.

So, with Father Peter Gillquist’s guidance and the blessing of His Emminence Metropolitan PHILIP, His Grace Bishop ANTOUN came and he founded our Orthodox mission.

Father Tom Hopko from Saint Vladimir’s Seminary, who knew nothing of our Saint Nicholas connection, sent us a relic of Saint Nicholas, which is now embedded in our altar.

We submitted three names for our new church to Metropolitan PHILIP, who named us Saint Nicholas Church.

The planning, building, and installation of the 7-foot diameter Platera icon, written by the hand of Anthony Kashinn. Tony Wood,* Tony Kashinn, Tom Zompolas,* Pat Barber, and Phil Barber designed and built the fixtures to hold the icon in front of the window over the altar.

When we bought this building, we had our first services on the next major feast day—which was Saint Nicholas Day.

The money we need has always just arrived, often in very unexpected ways (that’s also another story) for which one of our early treasurers, Lou Chambers, coined the term, “the Saint Nicholas Factor.” It still kicks in regularly. When there have been problems, I have gone to Saint Nicholas, and sometimes results have come within hours. When I mentioned to him in passing that we needed more children, more young families around here, it took a couple of weeks for the surge to begin, and now look!

That wonderful icon I bought in 1985 now presides at the entrance to our church to make the point that this truly is Saint Nicholas’ Church. This is not really our church. It’s his. This is his work.

Holy Father, Bishop Nicholas, continue to intercede with Christ our God to save our souls.

Celebrating our 10th Anniversary in 1999.

From the very beginning as a mission, St. Nicholas has practiced double tithing, giving 20% of our income to charity annually. This has amounted to approximately $500,000 in our first 25 years. We have grown and always received exactly what was needed, as a consequence. We call it “the St. Nicholas factor.”

The “St. Nicholas Factor” in Practice

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

Fr. Bill and Tony Kashinn watch the installation. Issue occurred at the top of ladder when they had to lift the icon up and away from the wall about 30" to fit onto the holder. There was a moment when they couldn't get it; suddenly the icon moved into place, with what felt like the help of a large invisible hand. Thank you Saint Nicholas!

A RemembranceIt was a near blizzard day in February, 1989, when Father Bill and a core group of Parishioners from St. Boniface Episcopal Church Mequon met at the Church with Father Peter Gillquist and other Clergy from the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America. It was the beginning of what is now St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church Cedarburg and I was there. Little did I realize then, as an Antiochian Orthodox Christian from birth, that I was witnessing my dreams of an Antiochian Orthodox Church in the Milwaukee area becoming a reality. —Arthur E Nimmer
