Preface

1. Purpose of Technical Specification

This technical specification defines the technology related to the physical layer of

the system based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) as satellite

IMT-Advanced radio interface. It has been developed based on the technical

specification of 3GPP LTE and LTE-Advanced FDD.

2. Summary of Contents

Several transport channels can be multiplexed and transmitted onto one physical

channel. TTAE.3G-SAT.36.212 is addressed the procedure (CRC, Coding, Rate

matching, insertion of DTX, Interleaving, Multiplexing and so on) until transport

channels is mapped onto physical channels in SAT-OFDM system with compatibility to

3GPP LTE and LTE-Advanced FDD as satellite IMT-Advanced.

3. Applicable Fields of Industry and its Effect

TTAE.3G-SAT.36.212 defines the procedure for realization of transport channels

onto physical channels. The unified standard for multiplexing and coding can guarantee

the compatibility between terminal and base stations or other types of equipments.

This technical specification is possible to apply to the 4G personal mobile satellite

communication which can provide the seamless service using satellites.

The contents of the present document are subject to continuing work within the TTA and may change following formal

TTA approval. Should the TTA modify the contents of the present document, it will be re-released by the TTA with an

identifying change of release date and an increase in version number as follows:

y the second digit is incremented for all changes of substance, i.e. technical enhancements, corrections, updates,

etc.

z the third digit is incremented when editorial only changes have been incorporated in the document.

Introduction

The SAT-OFDM is a satellite radio interface to deliver various advanced mobile telecommunication services utilizing

either GEO (geostationary earth orbit) or LEO (low earth orbit) or MEO (Medium earth orbit) satellite(s). The radio

interface has a high degree of commonality with terrestrial 3GPP LTE specifications, but it also has a number of

different features. Those features, which are necessary to reflect the satellite-specific characteristics such as long round

trip delay and slow fading satellite channel, are implemented in the form of random access, interleaving, closed loop

power control and so on. In this regards, SAT-OFDM has two operational modes which are normal mode and

enhancing mode. The normal mode will address UE fully compatible with 3GPP LTE, with adaptation for agility for a

neighbouring MSS frequency band. On the other hands, the enhancing mode provide performance enhancement by

incorporating additional satellite specific features.

NOTE: The LTE(-Advanced) standards documents referenced in SAT-OFDM specifications are the transposed

documents provided by TTA which is one of the identified Transposing Organizations of 3GPP LTE(-Advanced)

specifications in ITU-R Recommendation M.2012. The detailed transposing relationship between TTA transposed

LTE(-Advanced) documents and 3GPP LTE(-Advanced) documents is shown in ITU-R Recommendation M.2012.

Due to the differences between terrestrial and satellite channel characteristics, some modifications to the LTE standards

are necessary. Some specifications are directly applicable, whereas others are applicable with modifications. Similarly,

some LTE standards do not apply, whilst some SAT-OFDM specifications have no corresponding LTE specifications.

Since SAT-OFDM is derived from 3GPP LTE(-Advanced), the organization of the SAT-OFDM specifications closely

follows the original 3GPP structure. The SAT-OFDM numbers have been designed to follow the corresponding 3GPP

LTE numbering system. All SAT-OFDM specifications have the following numbering system.

TTAE.3G-SAT. xx.yyy

Where:

The numbers xx and yyy correspond to the 3GPP-numbering scheme.

A SAT-OFDM system is defined by the combination of a family of SAT-OFDM specifications and 3GPP specifications,

as follows:

If a SAT-OFDM specification exists it takes precedence over the corresponding 3GPP specification (if any).

This precedence rule applies to any references in the corresponding 3GPP specifications.

Page 15: 3GPP TS 36.212, 'Multiplexing and channel coding'...The SAT-OFDM is a satellite radio interface to deliver various advanced mobile telecommunication services utilizing either GEO (geostationary

TTA

TTAE.3G-SAT.36.212 V1.0.0 (2013-xx) 5

If a SAT-OFDM specification does not exist, the corresponding 3GPP specification may or may not apply. The

exact applicability of the complete list of 3GPP specifications shall be defined at a later stage.

The following terminology translations are made between terminologies used in SAT-OFDM and corresponding LTE(-

Advanced) specifications.

The specifications for the normal mode operation of SAT-OFDM is based on the 3GPP LTE(-Advanced) eUTRA FDD

radio interface already standardized in 3GPP. Mobile satellite systems intending to use this mode will address user

equipment fully compatible with 3GPP LTE(-Advanced) eUTRA FDD WCDMA, with agility for the Mobile Satellite

Service (MSS) band.

The specifications for the enhancing mode operation of SAT-OFDM is based on the adaptation to the satellite

environment of terrestrial LTE(-Advanced) for performance enhancement by incorporating additional satellite specific

features.
