    Hue Shift AfghanNotes:

Eleven colors blend harmoniously in this mitered afghan.

This afghan is knit in four pieces and seamed together. Each of

the four pieces begins at one corner, and mitered squares are

picked up and knit directly onto the existing work.

    Centered Double Decrease (CDD)

Slip two stitches to the RH needle knit-wise. Knit the next stitch,

then pass two slipped sts over; two sts removed.

techniques, visit the Knit Picks website at http://www.knitpicks.

    DIRECTIONS

Though the mitered squares are all worked the same way, they

begin slightly differently depending on where in the pattern they

    are.

Each of the four sections of the afghan begins and is worked

the same way. The first square cast on becomes one of the four

corners of the afghan, and then four more squares are picked up

and knit, one after another, to form a row of squares. The next

row of squares is picked up and knit onto the previous row, and

so on, until the section is complete.

    Mitered Squares

    Square 1:

With first indicated color, CO 49 sts, marking center st with a

    coilless safety pin.

*Row 2(WS):Knit; this is the second row of the first Garter ridge.

Row 3 (RS):With second indicated color, K to 1 st before center

    st, CDD, K to end.

    Row 4:Knit.

Row 5:With first color indicated, repeat row 3.

Row 6:With first color indicated, repeat row 4.

Repeat rows 3-6 until 3 sts remain. Next row: in current color,

CDD. If square 2 begins with a different color than the current

color, break yarn and pass the tail through the remaining st to

bind off. If square 2 begins with the same color, consider this last

remaining stitch the first picked-up st of the next square.*

Square 2:With first color indicated, PU and K 25 sts across the rows

of Square 1. CO 24 sts. 49 sts. Work between *s of Square 1

    directions.

Repeat these directions for Squares 3-5.

    Square 6:

With first color indicated, CO 24 sts. PU and K 25 sts up the rows

of Square 1. 49 sts. Work between *s of Square 1 directions.

Repeat these directions for Squares 11, 16 and 21.

    Square 7:

PU and K 25 sts across the rows of Square 6. PU and K 24 sts

up the rows of Square 2. 49 sts. Work between *s of Square 1directions.

Repeat these directions for Squares 8-10, 12-15, 17-20, and 22-25.

After knitting Square 25, break yarn and pull the tail through the

    remaining st to bind off.

Repeat these directions for each of the four sections.

    Finishing

Weave in or fasten off ends.

Arrange the four sections as shown in the Afghan Layoutdiagram. With RS facing and using Mattress st, seam the four

    sections together using color F.

    Border

With color K, knit a Garter st border around the blanket:

Along any side of the afghan, with RS facing PU and knit 250 sts

along the edge, being sure to pick up sts wherever two squares

    are joined.

Work in Garter st for 20 rows (10 ridges); BO all sts loosely.

Repeat this on the opposite edge.

Turn work 90 degrees. PU and knit 10 sts across the edge of the

border, 250 sts across the raw edges of the squares, and 10 sts

across the last border: 270 sts. Work in Garter st for 20 rows (10ridges); BO all sts loosely.

Repeat this on the opposite edge.

Weave in remaining ends, wash and enjoy!

    Color Layout by Section

Work each section using the Miter instructions in the pattern

and the Miter Layout diagrams; work the squares in the colors

as described here. Over each square in the section, there are

two letters. The first of these is the color which you will use to

cast on or pick up the square, and the second is the accent

color in that square. For example: If a square says D-H, pick

up that square with color D, and work the accent stripes in H.
