Once again, Cardinal Mahony is asking all the parishes of theArchdiocese to contribute to the annual appeal known as TO-GETHER IN MISSION.

The purpose of TOGETHER IN MISSION is to raise funds tohelp the most needy parishes and schools in the Archdiocese.Every parish is asked to raise 10 % of its offertory income (i.e.,donations received through the Sunday collection as well asfrom baptisms, marriages and other sacraments).

This years goal for Holy Innocents is $29,425. This is aboutthe same as last years goal which, thanks to our generous pa-rishioners, we were able to meet.

Registered parishioners will have already received or will soonreceive an appeal letter from Cardinal Mahony himself.

Today, Commitment Sunday, we will be asking our parishion-ers to make a pledge. If everyone does his or her part, weshould be able to reach our parish goal of$29,425.

    TOGETHERIN MISSIONANNUAL APPEAL 09

We need the help of every parishionerto reach our parish goal and to help

    our fellow Catholics in need.

On these Sundays the Evangelist Markoffers a sequence of various miraculoushealings for our reflection. Last Sundayhe presented a very special one -- that of ahealed leper (cf. Mark 1:40-45) -- who, coming to Jesus, gets on his knees andsays: If you wish, you can make meclean! Jesus, moved, stretches out hishand, touches him and says: I do wish it.Be made clean!

The man is healed instantly and Jesusasks him not to tell anyone and presenthimself to the priests to offer the sacrifice prescribed by the Mosaiclaw. The healed leper is unable to be quiet and proclaims to every-one what happened to him so that, the evangelist reports, still moresick people ran to Jesus from every part to the point of forcing himto stay out of the cities so as not to be besieged by the crowds.

Jesus says to the leper: Be made clean! According to the an-cient Jewish law (Leviticus 13-14), leprosy was not only considereda sickness but the gravest form of impurity. It was the duty of thepriests to diagnose it and declare the person afflicted with leprosyunclean. This person then had to keep his distance from the commu-nity and stay away from towns until he was certified to be healed.

Leprosy thus constituted a kind of religious and civil death, andits healing was a kind of resurrection. We might see in leprosy a

symbol of sin, which is the true impurity of heart, distancing usfrom God. It is not, in effect, physical malady that distances us fromhim, as the ancient norms supposed, but sin, the spiritual and moralevil.

This is why the Psalmist exclaims: Blessed is he whose fault istaken away / and whose sin is covered. And then, turning to God:Then I acknowledged my sin to you, / my guilt I covered not. / Isaid: I shall confess my faults to the Lord, / and you took awaymy guilt and my sin (Psalm 31:1, 5 [32:1, 5]).

The sins we commit distance us from God, and, if they are nothumbly confessed, trusting in the divine mercy, they will finallybring about the death of the soul. This miracle thus has powerfulsymbolic value. Jesus, as Isaiah prophesied, is the servant of the

Lord who bore our infirmities, / endured our sufferings (Isaiah53:4). In his passion he will become like a leper, made impure byour sins, separated from God: He will do all this for love, with theaim of obtaining reconciliation, forgiveness and salvation for us.

In the Sacrament of Penance Christ crucified and risen, throughhis ministers, purifies us with his infinite mercy, restores us to com-munion with the heavenly Father and our brothers, and makes a giftof his love, joy and peace to us.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us invoke the Virgin Mary, whomGod preserved from every stain of sin, that she help us to avoid sinand to have frequent recourse to the Sacrament of Confession, theSacrament of Forgiveness, whose value and importance for ourChristian life needs to be rediscovered today.

    THIS WEDNESDAYIS ASH WEDNESDAY

The Holy Season of Lent begins this coming Wednes-day with the imposition of ashes in the sign of thecross upon the foreheads of the faithful.

The blessed ashes remind us that life in this world isshort. Sooner or later (and probably sooner than most of usthink), the day will arrive when we will stand before Jesusour just judge and give an account of our lives.

The blessed ashes also remind us that sin leads to eter-nal death, that is, eternal separation from God in hellwhere there will be endless suffering and misery.

God sent His Son into the world to save us from this sadand tragic end and Jesus Christ, by His death and resurrec-tion, has offered us the forgiveness of sins so long as werepent.

This simple yet profound gesture--the imposition ofblessed ashes on the forehead--is an expression of our pro-found desire to turn away from sin once and for all and tostrive anew to live a life more pleasing to God. May ourreception of the blessed ashes be accompanied by a sinceredesire for conversion.

    CONFESSIONPURIFIESUS

Starting at 5:00pm, BLESSED ASHES will be distributed continuously everyhalf-hour. The line moves very rapidly and there should be little if any waiting.

Please note. There will be just one Mass on Ash Wednesday:

    6:55am in the church.
