Hello & Goodbye

Compete to Greet

Greetings are an important ritual in Iran, as in other countries. According to Iranian customs, one should make every effort to be the first to initiate a greeting by saying“Salaam.” Often, people compete to be the first to offer the greeting.

In the video, the woman greets her three male neighbors sitting on the bench. As the newest arrival to the group, she makes efforts to initiate a greeting. The three male neighbors, however, stand up and compete with one another to initiate the greeting.

A shorter form, bes me hee ta’aa laa ( تعالی in his exalted name) is also often used. Although the words , بسمهare Arabic, the pronunciation is Persian.

Titles of Address

Khaanom (*Khanoom) خانم is similar to Ms. and is also used alone, like Ma’am and Miss. For men, the title of address is ‘Aaghaa آقا (Mr. or Sir). However, there are two variations for each title of address. When a first name only is used, the title of address goes after the name (Farah Khaanom or Ali ‘aaghaa علی آقا یا When the .(فرح خانمfamily name or both names are used, the titles precede the name with the following variation: Khaanom خانم becomes Khaanom-e خانم as in Khaanom-e Rad راد and ; خانم‘Aaghaa آقا becomes ‘Aaghaa-ye Rad راد .آقای

In general, titles are used in polite or formal conversations and always when addressing elders or superiors. However, close friends, immediate family members, and children use first names. Titles may also precede professional titles such as doctor, engineer, senator, minister, etc. آبادی خانم دکتر مهندس علیزاده، In addition, the .آقایterm of endearment joon جون , or more formally jaan, جان is often added to names of people who are close to the speaker. It is somewhat equivalent to adding dear to a name in English.
