Product Description of CPCM

Product Information

CPCM – Common Planning & Configuration Manager

CPCM (Common Planning & Conguration Manager) is

a mobile carrier solution developed by MicroNova for

planning and conguration management. Major custo-mer Telefónica Germany uses the tool for the planning

and conguration management of its entire network

since 2004.

MicroNova’s solution is directly integrated into the

planning and conguration process of Telefónica

Germany. CPCM consists of two major tools, CPM

(Common Planning Manager) and CCM (Common Con-

guration Manager).

Product Overview of CPCM

  Tool-based planning and conguration management

  Automatization of the datall process

Outsourcing of network planning or network opera-

tion (rmly dened interface between CPM and CCM

with release management functionality)

Application Area of CPCM

Roll-out of new equipment (BSC, RNC, eNodeB, BTS

etc.)

  Coverage planning

  Frequency planning

  Load balancing (BSC/RNC level)  Firmware-upgrades

Roll-out of new network features (EDGE, Frequency

Hopping, Dual-BCCH etc.)

Network optimization based on quality improvement  Network optimization due to network interferences

  Temporary interventions (Oktoberfest, expositions

etc.)

  Change of local trafc

Main Benets for Mobile Carriers

Reduction of operating costs (OPEX) by a tool-

supported, automated network planning and con-

guration management

  Reducing integration and maintenance costs

through modular architecture and maximize reusa-

bility (Plug-in technology, integrated workow ma-

nagement, Rule-Engine)

  Reduced time-to-market (Management decisi-

on -> Implementation -> Roll-out)

  Enhancement of network quality by

 ■ Standardizing the conguration process

 ■ Consistency check of the planning/conguration

data including GUI for creating your own valida-

tion rules (user dened validation rules)

 ■ Reconciled to the live network conguration

data

 ■ Technology / carrier independent comparison ofhandover relationships

Minimal training costs through easy handling and

consistent look and feel

Optimum integration into the carrier processes  Future-proof  by

 ■ State-of-the-art technologies (JBoss, Eclipse

RPC, Oracle, MySQL etc.)

 ■ Easy extension to new technologies (LTE, LTE

Advanced etc.)

 ■ Easy extensibility to new vendors (ZTE,

Ericsson)

 ■ Support of SWAPs

Technical Key Features of CPCM

Automatization  of the datall process of mobile

carriers: CPCM does an automatical reconciliation

of the network planning data with the live network

data. As a result of the comparison, CPCM generates

a consistence conguration data record.

  Rule-based  conguration management: The key

component of CPCM is a very powerful workow

management system called rule engine. The rule

engine decouples easily the business logic from the

programming logic and offers the extensibility of the

application.

  Multivendor support

 ■ NSN GSM/UMTS/LTE ■ Huawei GSM/UMTS/LTE

Fully integration in system and process landscape

of mobile carriers:

 ■ Direct integration of NMS layer per NBI (NSN

Netact, Huawei M2000)

 ■ Secure client-server-connection (SSH)

 ■ Direct integration of the planning tools (CPM,

Forsk ATOLL, x:akta etc.)

 ■ Support of external planning data (roaming

partner)

 ■ Import of a subset of planning data during a

planning cycle

 ■ It works as a central/standalone system or as

a distributed system (Single Region / Multi Re-

gion)

  Scalability

In case of geographical distribution or load balan-

cing CPCM can be distributed in different ways:

 ■ One System per vendor, region or technology

 ■ Support of database synchronization between

all distributed CPCM systems

Interview with o2’s Heike

Manshon and Zoran Gardijan

InNOVAtion: How would you eva-

luate the collaboration between

the teams at o2 and MicroNova?

Heike Manshon:  The exible,

event-oriented collaboration with

MicroNova facilitates user-friendly

implementation with short review

intervals while developing Plan

Manager. MicroNova provided op-

timal support for o2’s selected mix

of classic specications and time-

saving prototyping in every phase

of the project.

Zoran Gardijan:  Collaboration

with MicroNova was highly con-

structive at every point in time.

Trust is important in project work, and it was always there.

InNOVAtion:  How long did Plan

Manager implementation take?

Zoran Gardijan:  Our speci-

cations were implemented very

quickly. Overall, MicroNova deve-

loped Plan Manager and launched

operation within seven months.

We have dened further specica-

tions to MicroNova to be integrated

into Plan Manager.

InNOVAtion:  In your opinion,

what are the advantages to the

new tool chain?

Heike Manshon:  Data quality

improved via denable consis-

tency tests. Another advantage

is more exible data generation.

Additionally, we are now working

in a process-oriented manner with

clearly dened release rules. The

architecture in the MicroNova so-

lution is future-oriented due to the

use of joint modules in planning

and conguration management.

Zoran Gardijan:  The duration of

development has become shorter,

which has made it possible for us

to reduce costs. We have already

determined network quality and

the shorter development time in a

measurable manner.

InNOVAtion: How will things pro-

gress in the future?

Heike Manshon: One of the more

immediate objectives in tool ar-

chitecture is complete illustration

of planning rules at one location

within the tool chain. Thus, it will

be necessary to dene parameters

and implement design just one

time. Further CPM/CCM modules

existing now and in the future will

then base their application rules

exclusively on that parameter da-

tabase.

Zoran Gardijan:  The systems

should be further integrated to

further increase efciency. Fur-

thermore, the new LTE technology

has to be implemented and remain

 just as controllable.
