NYCs Bloomberg: $500K to gay marriage campaigns

    NEW YORK (AP) Mayor Michael

Bloomberg is poised to spend$500,000 of his personal fortune ongay marriage campaigns in Maine,Minnesota and Washington state, hesaid Monday, following up on a majorpolical spending push the billionairebus ines s man-turned-pol i t ic ianannounced last week.

Bloomberg already had establishedhimself as an outspoken, and generous, supporter of same-sex marriage. Heunveiled a $250,000 contribuonto a Maryland gay marriage eortearlier this month and has backedfour New York Republican senatorswho crossed party lines to vote forlegalizing gay marriage in the state

last year. Mondays move deepenedBloombergs involvement in the issueoutside New York, and it reected hisvow to give at least $10 million byElecon Day to moderate candidatesand to ballot iniaves supporng gaymarriage and other issues around thecountry.

Marriage equality is the next big step

in Americas long march of freedom,

    Bloomberg said in a statementMonday.

His new contribuons, intended aschallenge grants to spur matchingdonaons, include $125,000 to agroup backing a ballot iniave thatwould legalize gay marriage in Maineand $250,000 to an organizaonseeking to uphold it in Washington. AWashington law legalizing same-sexmarriage was passed and signed thisyear, but it s on hold unl next monthsreferendum.

Bloomberg is giving another $125,000to a group working against a Minnesotaconstuonal amendment that would

strengthen an exisng law againstsame-sex marriage. A dozen Minnesotabusinesspeople already have raised$125,000 to match Bloombergs gi,said the organizaon, MinnesotansUnited for All Families.

Business leaders across the state and those around the naon, likeMayor Bloomberg have made it

clear that this amendment is bad

for business, Minnesotans Unitedcampaign manager Richard Carlbomsaid. The group says the proposedconstuonal amendment would hurtMinnesotas prospects of aracngtalented workers, among otherarguments against it.

A spokesman for a group leading thecharge to pass the proposal, Minnesotafor Marriage, saw Bloombergs gi asinterloping.

We believe it is the people ofMinnesota who should decide thequeson of marriage, not out-of-state donors like Bloomberg, saidthe spokesman, Chuck Darrell. The

organizaon, which includes religiousand socially conservave groups, saysthe state needs the constuonallanguage to keep judges or lawmakersfrom altering the tradional denionof marriage as a union between a manand a woman.

Same-sex marriage is currently legalin New York, Conneccut, Iowa,

    Massachuses, New Hampshire,

    Vermont and Washington, D.C.

Besides gay marriage ballot quesons,Bloombergs self-nanced super PAC,Independence USA PAC, is focusingon local, state and congressionalcandidates who agree with him onissues including gun control, educaonreform and the importance of workingacross party lines. Beneciaries rangefrom former Maine Gov. Angus King, now running for U.S. Senate there asan independent, to Gloria NegreteMcLeod, a Democrac Californiasenator running for U.S. House.

    Bloomberg, a Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent,

has declined thus far to make apresidenal endorsement, and hissuper PAC doesnt plan to pay for anypresidenal ads.

    NY top court wont

hear gay marriage challengeALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New Yorkstop court refused Tuesday to heara challenge to the states 2011 lawlegalizing same-sex marriage, endingthe most prominent objecon to thelaw.

The decision leaves intact the Julyruling by a midlevel court, whichconcluded closed-door negoaonsamong senators and gay marriagesupporters, including Gov. AndrewCuomo, did not violate any laws. TheCourt of Appeals, as is customary, didnot explain why it wouldnt take themcase.

New Yorkers for ConstuonalFreedoms claimed Cuomo and anothergay marriage supporter, New YorkMayor Michael Bloomberg, violatedthe states open meengs law whenthey met behind closed doors with theSenates Republican majority.

With the courts decision, same-sexcouples no longer have to worry thattheir right to marry could be legallychallenged in this state, Cuomo said

Tuesday. The freedom to marry inthis state is secure for generaons tocome.

Syracuse Mayor Stephanie A. Minerreleased the following statement insupport of the court s decision.Today is yet another occasion forsame sex couples from across New Yorkto celebrate our states commitmentto equality. The Court of Appeals, thehighest court in the state, refused tohear an appeal of the validity of theMarriage Equality Act. This ensures thefundamental right to marry stays thelaw of our land for all couples looking

to bring together a family. One of thegreatest privileges I have as Mayor is toociate marriage ceremonies. Sincethe Marriage Equality Act became law,I have been proud to marry a numberof gay couples. Giving these menand women the opportunity to sharethe rights of all equal cizens of oursociety has been an honor. I can say asa lawyer, as a Mayor, and as a personwho believes in the intrinsic equalityof all New Yorkers todays decision bythe court was right and just.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Thumb throughthe Syracuse media guide to therecords secon, and its no surprisethe rst three pages are devoted to

rushing. For a school steeped in atradion of greatness at running back, the rst half of the season was ananomaly.

The Orange failed to have one 100-yard rusher and fell to 2-4. ThenJerome Smith nally broke throughagainst Conneccut on Friday night.

Smith rushed for a career-high 133yards to pace a running game thatneed 251, averaging 4.7 yards percarry, and the Orange (3-4, 2-1 BigEast) routed the Huskies 40-10.

Coaches always strive for balance, andSyracuse delivered against UConn withequal yardage in both phases and 20points in each half. Ryan Nassib was14 of 20 passing for 251 yards in anoensive performance that need502 yards to Conneccuts 290. UConnentered the game ranked sixth in totaldefense (261 ypg) and 13th against therun (99.4).

It was a big emphasis, Orange coachDoug Marrone said of the run game. There was a lot of frustraon. Weknew we had to run the ball. Wechallenged those guys. We challengedthem up front. We challenged theirbacks. I think we did a nice job. Itshows that we can keep building andkeep becoming more physical.

Syracuse lost the rst two games ofthe season, to Northwestern andSouthern California relying on a no-huddle oense that ran an amazing182 plays and produced 1,051 yards. The rushing aempts were there (35per game) but the yardage wasnt (3.6yards per carry) as Smith, Nassib andPrince-Tyson Gulley combined for thebulk of the carries.

In losing 23-15 at Rutgers 10 daysago, Syracuse managed just 62 yardsrushing on 32 carries, commied fourturnovers, and had a blocked kickreturned for a touchdown. That cameaer a solid 14-13 win at home overPisburgh in this topsy-turvy season.

The Orange set the tone against UConnon their opening drive, playing smash-mouth football as Smith broke a 20-yard gain on the rst of four straightcarries that produced 49 yards and setup Ross Krautmans 22-yard eld goal.

It was execuon, Syracuse oensivecoordinator Nathaniel Hacke said. Imean, they just did what they weresupposed to do. As simple as thatsounds, its hard to do. Nobodyscoming out and dominang us.Nobodys beat us every game thisseason, and its been on us.

Just that one series seemed to have asnowball eect as the Syracuse passinggame opened, even against the likesof UConns standout cornerbacks

    Dwayne Gratz and Blidi Wreh-Wilson.

They combined for just ve tackles andfailed to break up a pass. Alec Lemonwas open oen on slant plays and ghtend Becke Wales caught four passesfor 69 yards and the rst touchdownof his career.

We showed that we are a completeteam in all three phases, said Lemon, who caught eight passes for 166 yards, seng up three TDs and scoring once. The rst couple of drives we wererunning the ball great. That broughtthe corners up, brought the safeesup. They were worried about the runand that opened up a lot for the passgame. We could get open up the eld.

    Since its demoralizing start, Syracuse

is 3-1 and might challenge for the Big

East tle, though the loss to Rutgerswont help.

The Orange travel to South Florida (2-5, 0-3) on Saturday, facing a team thatsgiven Syracuse ts over the years. TheBulls have lost 11 of 12 Big East gamesdang to last season, but they nearlyupset No. 16 Louisville last weekendbefore losing 27-25.

We wanted to make a statement,Lemon said. Were capable of winningall these games. Weve just got tocome out there and play like we knowhow to play. Our goal coming into thisseason was to win the Big East, and Ifeel like were on track to do that.

We need moderators to presscandidates to discuss fundamentalissues that too oen are cut out of thedebate. And we need them to press foranswers beyond the talking points andhelp Americans see where candidatesreally stand.

For example, the plight and promiseof our cies have been virtuallyabsent from the debate. Republicans

drugs. We desperately need a policyto address urban poverty just aswe need one to address the povertyof Appalachia and rural areas. Urbanpoverty has now spread to suburbs,as well. Mass transit, educaon, aordable housing, a living wage, childnutrion, Medicaid, public health these fundamental needs of thevulnerable are now slated for deepcuts in the Romney/Ryan budgets. Yetthere is virtually no discussion of whatour policy should be for the cies.

Cies are also vibrant centers ofcreavity, culture, higher educaonand energy. They are generators of jobsand innovaon where the young andthe entrepreneurial ock. Yet, thereis no discussion of the public policiesneeded to foster urban producvityand growth. Mass transit, energyeciency, greening of urban areas, aordable college, the right to privacy, the right to organize and many otherpressing issues must be addressed ifour cies are to remain vital centersfor invenon and growth.

Or consider inequality. Inequality hasreached greater extremes than in age

of the robber barons. Coming outof the recession, the top 1 percentcaptured fully 93 percent of thecountrys income growth. Workersare no longer sharing in the increasedproducvity and prots they help toproduce.

Romney favors lowering tax rates onthe wealthy (while closing unspeciedloopholes); Obama favors ending thetop-end Bush tax cuts and enforcinga Bue rule so that billionairesdont pay lower tax rates than their

secretaries. But absent has been anydiscussion of the implicaons of thiskind of extreme inequality for ourdemocracy even as big money oodsour campaigns. Absent has been anyserious discussion about what agendawould be needed to rebuild a broadmiddle class, to recreate what weenjoyed aer World War II when weall grew together and incomes on theboom grew faster, rather than now, when the few are rising, and the restare sinking.

Lets have a debate in which at leastsome of the vital subjects that are beingignored cies, poverty, inequality,

climate change are discussed, andcandidates arent allowed to get bywith recycled talking points.

This requires a moderator who is notinmidated by public cricism butempowered to serve the public byforcing the debate.

It is always big news whenever ethicscharges are brought against a Memberof Congress. Convicons, though rare, also make headlines. We understandthat bad news sells. But we also think itis a big deal when a respected Memberof Congress is completely exoneratedof ethics charges -- especially when thatMember is someone as powerful andeecve as California CongresswomanMaxine Waters. In case you missed

it, in September, aer a three-year

invesgaon, Representave Waters,a 21-year veteran of the House and asenior member of the House FinancialServices Commiee, was cleared of allcharges related to her role in assisngminority-owned banks get bail-out help through the governmentsTroubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).While her husband owned stock inone of those banks, the invesgaonfound that the help that bank received

was the result of a request she madeon behalf of all minority banks. HouseEthics Commiee Special Counsel,Billy Marn concluded, The evidencein the record does not support aknowing violaon of ethics rules orany standard of conduct with respectto Rep. Maxine Waters.

Since her inial 1991 elecon to theHouse, Representave Waters hasbeen a staunch advocate for middleand working class families and hasfought hard for minority inclusion inthe nancial services industry. In fact, she wrote the legislaon creangthe Oces of Minority and WomenInclusion as part of the Dodd-Frank

    Wall Street Reform and Consumer

Protecon Act. Dodd-Frank putsin place the most comprehensivenancial regulatory reform measuressince the Great Depression and isintended to prevent a repeat of thereckless Wall Street behavior thatcaused the nancial crisis of 2008. Inher role as a senior member of theFinancial Services Commiee, Rep.Waters played a key role in shapingthat legislaon and was successful

in including provisions specicallydesigned to protect low-incomeand minority cizens. Becauseof her, there is now an Oce ofMinority and Women at each of thefederal regulatory agencies suchas the Treasury Department, theFederal Reserve, the Federal DepositInsurance Corporaon, and others. These Oces will work to reverseyears of underrepresentaon andensure the gender, racial and ethnicdiversity of the workforce and seniormanagement, as well as increasecontracng opportunies for minority-and women-owned businesses.

    Representave Waters also fought

to ensure that in winding down

struggling nancial instuons, regulators considered the impacton low-income, minority, andunderserved communies whereaccess to mainstream banking is aproblem. And to help stem the deof housing foreclosures, she secured$1 billion with an addional $1billion commitment from the TreasuryDepartment to help unemployedhomeowners receive low-interest

loans to pay their mortgages. As a member of the CongressionalBlack Caucus, Representave Watershas also traveled the country to shinea spotlight on the problem of urbanunemployment and has worked withCongressional Members of bothpares to pass crical jobs legislaon. With the rerement of Barney Frank,Congresswoman Waters is in lineto be the ranking Democrat on theHouse Financial Services Commiee. We applaud her leadership and arepleased that her Ethics Commieeexoneraon removes any obstacle toher ascendency.

Did Harvard Really RejectJay-Z as a Business Role Model? I Sincerely Hope Not

Maria Lloyd recently wrote anarcle in which it was claimedthat the rapper Jay-Z wasrejected by a career counselorat Harvard University as anappropriate business rolemodel. I am not sure of theexact circumstances of thestudents allegaon, and I amnot sure if other Harvard facultyagreed. All I know is that ayoung woman said that sheadmired Jay-Z for what hesachieved in the business world,

and she was shot down faster than an unidenedsingle engine plane ying over the White House.

When I read the arcle, it made me sad and a lile bitdisgusted. I dont like Jay-Z very much, to be honest.Although he is nothing short of a lyrical genius, I amdeeply concerned about any man who earns over$60 million dollars in a year and only gives $6,000to charity. I had to agree with Harry Belafonte whenhe said that todays black arsts, namely Jay-Z andBeyonce, are ignoring their social responsibility byrefusing to ght on the issues aecng black America, including violence, poverty, unemployment andmass incarceraon. Also, the idea of making millionsof dollars by promong yourself as a n***a in Paristo white people around the world is the epitome of amodern day minstrel show.

But in Jay-Zs defense, I must say that any businessschool professor who doesnt believe that studentscan learn from him is DEAD WRONG.

Ive taught in various business schools over the last19 years. One of the most interesng things aboutteaching in a school of business is that you quicklynd that most business school professors dont

know how to go out and actually make money. Sure, theyre experts at producing highly-complicatedresearch papers that no one is ever going to read. But when asked to go into the real world to show

that they can do the things theyre teaching studentsto do, most of them fail the test.

(TriceEdneyWire.com) - As Ibasked in the glow of PresidentObamas clear victory in thesecond debate, I reectedon the nature and depth ofthe lies and omissions thathave permeated the Romneypresidenal campaign. I tried torecall as many lies as possible, but the job was simply toobig! Rachel Maddow has beenhighlighng the Mi Romneylies since early in the year, butlisng all or most of them is avery tough job. Mr. Romneys

character reminds me of the old queson of Howdo you know when a polician is lying? -- His lips aremoving!

As I struggled with the volume of Romneys lies, Irealized a more realisc focus was on those duringthe period surrounding the debates.

Romney has claimed, Theres no legislaonregarding aboron that Im familiar with that wouldbecome part of my agenda. Two hours aer thatremark, his press secretary pushed back by sayingRomney would, of course, support legislaonaimed at providing greater protecons for life.Romney himself said he would absolutely support aConstuonal amendment dening the beginning of

life as the moment of concepon.

In the face of contradicons from independentstudies, Romney sll asserts that the numbers forhis 20% across the board tax cuts add up. Outsideof Romneys Team, I know of no economists whowill validate his claim of these cuts being revenueneutral. I doubt that whats le of the Middle Classcould weather the tax burden predicted for his plan.

The most egregious of his lies relates to proposedhealthcare under a Romney administraon.Romney claims insurance protecons for personswith pre-exisng condions, but a closer look at thetruth discloses that, just like in pre-Obamacare era, these protecons exist for those who can maintaininsurance without interrupon. If, having a pre-exisng condion, you lose or relinquish coverage, you wont be able to regain it.

Lest we forget that the second debate lie CandyCrowley caught him in was not Romneys only lie, weneed to pay closer aenon to the potenal impactof these lies. As with many others, my review of theRomney Presidenal campaign has revealed morelies than I have space in which to write.

Romney once stated he didnt know what he said, but he stood by it! Eric Fehrnstrom, his spokesman, said Romney would reset like an Etch A Sketch.Accordingly, I can direct you to any number of Romney

lies, and proclaim that he is indeed making full useof the Etch A Sketch! What I cannot explain is thewillingness of some people to ignore his vast arrayof lies and seriously consider vong for him. Evenmore perplexing is the willingness of some to ignorethe threat he poses to the direcon of our countryand the future of our democracy. Its frightening tothink that, despite his lies, he is considered a viablecandidate. Even more frightening is the fact that hislies and arrogance could propel him to a perceivedvictory in the rst debate.

President Obamas supporters can relish the factthat most of the naon acknowledges a clear seconddebate victory for our President. It was a hearteningsolid performance based on truth and compassion. We can celebrate the Presidents verbal denessand command of the facts as he withstood Romneysbarrage of arrogant misrepresentaons.

The Presidents win was a great one-- but his win inthe second debate or another in the third are notthe important ones. The nal victory is the prizethe one on November 6, 2012! Thats when theAmerican people can rise to the occasion and say,We believe in victory based upon truth.
