Definition of Engineering Design Engineering design is the process of devising a system,

component, or process to meet desired needs.

It is a decision-making process (often iterative), in which the engineering sciences and mathematics are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective.

Among the fundamental elements of the design process are the establishment of objectives and criteria, synthesis, analysis, construction, testing, evaluation, and documentation.

How to proceed experiments

- Allot roles.- Arrange equipment and cables neatly based on

pre-reports.

- Discuss to determine the best experiment procedure based on pre-reports.

“Brain should be faster than hands.” = Think twice, before the adjustments

are made.

- Record data each time you get, do not wait until the end of experiment.

- Compare data with expected values based on pre-reports, each time you get.

- Record a detailed list of equipments, circuits, and interconnections in labnote*.

- DO NOT proceed if the deviation > 5%. Solve the problem, then go on.

- Calculate if necessary, do not wait until the end of experiment.

- Check the condition of equipment at the end of experiment.- Everything should be in its place back for next experiment.

The Laboratory Notebooks

- Day by day HISTORY of engineering works. Ex) High Tc superconductor

- Being used extensively in industry and research.

“Labnote can be a lot of money in the future.”

- Being required in employment (USA).

- Should be entered in sufficient detail to be used for final report.

- To serve as legal documents in PATENT application.

- Should be entered in sufficient detail to duplicate experiment later or by others.

- To establish the habit of bookkeeping.

- Record data each time you get, do not wait until the end of experiment.- Errors are permissible as long as corrected NEATLY.- Draw a single line diagonally, and write “incorrect” or “wrong” on

the error.- DO NOT try to obliterate information by erasing or scribbling over it.- Labnote that contains carbon copy is strongly recommended.

- Should be made neatly in ink. Pencil is not permitted.
