Broaden the Horizon, Reach out to the world

1

Led by Prof. Sylvia Sao Leng IEONG, and Mr. Harvey LO, FED, a group of FED students completed an English Immersion of TESL- Methodology Learning and Internship Programme in New Zealand and returned to Macao with fruitful achievements and unforgettable experience on June18th, 2017. Started by enthusiastic FED professors in 2006, the 3-week programme has benefited over two hundred students and has just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Crossing the equator, the program extends from the northern hemisphere to the islands over the South Pacific. A large number of students have taken this opportunity to get out of Macao, see the world and gain a global perspective, in addition to enhancing their English proficiency.

The program has been greatly welcomed by students since its very beginning. It is initiated by the Faculty of Education and supported by the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) as well as University of Macau. It aims to provide opportunities for student teachers to learn and experience the latest English teaching and learning methods in an English-speaking country. During the three-week study, students went to four local schools for short-term teaching practice and school experience, cooperate and exchange ideas with the teachers there.

Study and Practice

This programme consists of a methodology course and internship. Students experience authentic English language use as well as western way of teaching and learning. They not only received intensive training from professors at the English Language Academy of Auckland University but also learn more from practice. The internship is a whole-day school experience embodied in the practice of language teaching and learning. The 3-week homestay enabled students to mix and communicate with the local families in an English-speaking environment, all of which helped them improve their oral language skills. They worked with the local teachers to guide students on their homework, and explained the text to enrich their practical knowledge. Learning from teaching, UM students learned a lot of teaching skills. Learning from teaching, UM students accumulated their teaching experience and benefited a lot from the programme.

Grow up from independence

It is the first time for most of the students to leave home, travel and live independently far away from home. They faced a variety of pressures in the new environment, such as difficulty in communication. Prof.IEONG, who has been leading the team for many times, believes that many students from "one-child" families grew up a lot through the program. They became more confident from the beginning, from "run-in period" to the "adaptation period" then to the "honeymoon period".

Expend your horizon, hear and speak to the world

The University is not small the world is large. The accelerating internationalization in Macao poses higher demands on the international vision of students. Studying at the University of Auckland, visiting four local primary and secondary schools and going to every corner of Auckland, these student teachers make friends by using the “world language”--English. During this process, students also could experience the cultural differences and understand themselves better through intercultural communication.

Over ten years ago, the FED started the English Enhancement and Internship Programme that sent students "reaching out"; ten years later, more than two hundred students have taken this opportunity to get unforgettable learning experiences. In their own words, doing internship abroad is conducive to improving their ability of English teaching and broadening their horizons; for Macao, it is a great worthwhile effort for cultivating more high-quality English teaching talents in Macao. Sincere thanks to all the teachers and colleagues who have contributed to the programme. Let us look forward to the next decade and help many more students realize their dreams!

TESL-Methodology Learning

In the first week in New Zealand, we received intensive training at the English Language Academy of the University of Auckland, specializing in English language teaching and Western teaching methods training. This study-week is the foundamental of our following internship in primary and secondary schools. According to what we have learned in both here and the University of Macau, some of the methodology are so different because English is the native language of the local students but the second language of the student in Macau. We realize the difference between English teaching methods in different language environment based on the training in this week so that we distinguish different English teaching methods consciously in the follow-up teaching pracitice.

After the training, we have the valuable opportunity to cooperate with the senior local teachers to learn how to guide students in different grades.

InternshipAfter a period of cooperation with senior teachers, we go to the local primary school and junior high school for short-term teaching practice. We are involved in the western-style daily teaching activities, such as interpreting the text and correcting homework. Of course, we also introduce some of the traditional practices and food of Macao to local students.

Joy in tourIn leisure time of studying and internship, our team go to local attractions together. We learn how to make traditional pancake in the restaurant; we walk in the foggy volcanic park in the early morning; we skydiving at the top of the mountain ...

Reward and approvalOn the last day of the University of Auckland, teachers award us certificates for training and internship. We suddenly realize that the 30-day journey was coming to an end. These days, we not only have been recognized by local students and teachers, but also gain the precious friendship. At the end of the internship, the children singing and dancing to express gratitude to us. They show their great unwillingness to say goodbye with us at the ending ceremony.

『 Why do you want to join in the project?

Angela: When I was in year one, I had heard of this project and decided to join. The most attractive element of this project is the location. It gives me a precious opportunity to explore the world and encounter a totally different culture from my birthplace.Jenny: New Zealand is a really beautiful place and I always wanted to go there and see the wonderful landscapes. Also, I’ve heard our seniors talking about this project several times. They gave it a very nice comment. I was attracted and want to experience it myself. The most important is, English is one of the official language in New Zealand. Students are native English speakers, it’s a very rare opportunity to observe the real English class in this context.

What is the most impressive thing during the trip?

Angela: The most impressive thing is the education system in New Zealand. It made me knew the true meaning of education. Teachers were worked as an instructor and coordinator while the students were actively engaging in the process. The whole learning environment and atmosphere are positive and both teachers and students enjoyed the lessons.Jenny: For me, the most impressive thing is the teaching difference between New Zealand and Macao. In New Zealand, students have lots of projects during class, rather than focusing only on the knowledge itself. They do researches on lap with different students to improve their teamwork skills and their independent learning skills at the same time. They are both important even for the university students and they have already start to build up on that. This is really impressive.

What is the most valuable treasure you gained from this journey?

Angela: The sharing from the experienced teachers were the most precious treasure I gained in this trip. They shared how they organised the class activities, manage the classroom discipline, cooperation with their colleagues and so on. I had learned a lot from them and their speeches were really inspiring.

Jenny: In this project, I got to know how the native English speakers having their English classes. I got to know how the British people live their cozy life. I got to know how to travel in a beautiful place like this. There is so much to talk about. I also tried Skydive during the leisure time of this project, which I really love.

Talk aboutthe Journey…
