Hoisting To Greatness with Super Kelly By: Jacob Arnold Prior to meeting, the self-taught superhero Kelly Heekin, I had little knowledge about Hoist,and how much work a small company has to do. However, during the session with super Kelly, I learned a lot, not only about Hoist,as a product and a company, but about how to you are always needing to adapt as a small business. Prior to meeting with super Kelly I decided that some research needed to be done so that I could have a better understanding of the company. In order to do this I used the Hoist website ( www.drinkhoist.com) and the Hoist Instagram feed ( https://www.instagram.com/drinkhoist) . I also used Kelly Heekin directly to answer some of my questions. So what is Hoist? Hoist is a hydration drink that lays claim to rapid rehydration. The rapid rehydration comes from it’s isotonic solution, which allows the liquid to enter your bloodstream without delay. How? Well, isotonic solutions flow through your stomach and is then absorbed by your body, no digestion needed because it is the same density of blood and cells. Hoist provides the perfect balance of water, carbohydrates, and electrolytes that the body needs. This is what makes Hoist unique compared to other hydration products. According to a brief survey conducted during this session with super Kelly, about 40 students in the room had tried the product, and only one student used the product on a regular basis. The student who used Hoist on a regular basis said that he uses it because it hydratesyou really fast, it is easy to get, and it is great for a workout. After hearing this during the session, it appears asthough super Kelly is doing his marketing and branding very well! But there has to be some underlying framework… Ah wait! Super Kelly mentioned that, Yoda and his Jedi padawans had built a marketing strategy for Hoist! Super Kelly told us at the session that Yoda and his padawans have impacted the business from mutiple areas including: branding fundamentals, packaging, product development, building target customer profiles, and overall helping the brand grow. One of the things Yoda and his padawan’s recommended is that they use doing good as a brand purpose. To this day, Hoist uses ’doing good’ as a brand purpose. This was a difficult transition at first, since they were considered a hangover drink, but the change was necessary. After doing some research on Hoist’s website prior to the session with super Kelly, I found that most people that are empowered by Hoist are those that are athletesand alwayson the go, along with those who are taking care of someone that is sick or they are sick themselves. While doing this research on the website, I decided to note how I felt about their website. Overall I liketheir website, it does seem rather basic compared to other beverages (e.g. Red Bull, Gatorade, VitaCoco). However, I feel as though the site is aligned with the branding fundamentals that super Kelly shared with us . If I was asked to improve the site, I would do an audit and make sure everything was working properly (i.e. Instagram feed on Media Page). After checking out their site, I decided to investigagetheir Instagram feed, and I liked it. I believe it was a good mix of showing their customers, products and the athletes that they sponsor. This is good because they are not just pushing and trying to sell product, they are taking all angles.The only way I believe their feed could improve is by focusing less on athletes, and more on the active lifestyle, which may appeal to a wider rangeof audiences. After learning from super Kelly, I felt empowered myself. I found it very interesting that a group of friends was able to get together,and create a product from the problem that they were experiencing. I have grown even more respect for entrepreneurs after listening to Kelly Heekin! I feel as though the biggest takeaway for this session with super Kelly was, adaptation is a must in order to survive in the businessworld (as a company and as a businessperson), if you don’t adapt you won’t be able to survive. Overall I feel as though this session was beneficial to me and I learned a few great takeaways.

Ifound itveryinterestingthatagroupoffriendswasabletogettogether,andcreateaproductfromtheproblem thattheywereexperiencing.IhavegrownevenmorerespectforentrepreneursafterlisteningtoKellyHeekin!Ifeel asthoughthebiggesttakeawayforthissessionwithsuperKellywas,adaptationisamustinordertosurviveinthebusinessworld(asacompany andasabusinessperson), ifyoudon’tadaptyouwon’tbeabletosurvive.OverallIfeelasthoughthissessionwasbeneficial tomeandIlearnedafewgreattakeaways.

UnleashingYourPotentialBy:JacobArnoldBefore IhadthechancetomeetthepassionateDanielleMoore,IhadsometimetoreflectontheknowledgethatIgainedfromsuperKelly,andalsowhatIwasabouttolearnfromMs.Moore.Duringmyreflection,IdecidedtonavigatetoLinkedIntofindsome backgroundinformation onDanielle,andherhistory.SowhatdidIexpecttolearnfromDanielle?Well,Iexpectedtogainsome tipsonfindingouthowtofindwhatIlovedoing,andhowtotrulyadvancemyselfaftercollege.Duringthissessionhowever,IlearnedalotmorethanIwasexpecting.LittledidIknow,thatIcouldlearnsomuchfromaseasonedpassionatemanager,thismadethesessiongreatforme.Sowhatdoesittaketotrulydiscoverwhatyouarepassionateabout?Wellaccording tothegreatDanielle,shefoundherpassioninterningincollege.DuringthistimeDaniellewasincollegeinBoulder,CO,andhad aconversationwithoneofherprofessors.Herprofessorrecommended thatshelisthertopfivefavoritecompanies thatshewishtoworkfor,andthenapplyforinternships.Withhergrowingloveforfood,andBoulderbecomingtheplacetobeforinnovationinthebetterfoodmovement,Daniellecouldn’thelpbutlistafewfoodcompanies. Afterdoinganinternshipatanadvertisingagency,shedecideditwastimetotryoneofthesegreatfoodinnovators.ThefirststopforDanielle?Justin’sNutButter!AtJustin’sNutbuttershewasabletotrulyfindherpassionofpublicrelations.DuringhertimeatJustin’sshecreatedapressreleasethatchangedthegame.Thispressreleasecameduringthebigpeanutbutterscare,andwaseducatingthepubliconwhyitwassafetoeatJustin’sNutButter.Afterdoingthisshedidn’twanttostopthere.Shewantedtousethebigimpactthatshehadatasmallercompany,andgenerateatremendousimpactatabiggercompany.Aftercreatingthispressrelease,andinterningatafewcompanies,Daniellewasabletofindwhatshewastrulypassionateabout.Earlyon,Daniellelearnedtheimportanceofnetworkingtoone’scareer.AccordingtoDanielle,networkingisoneoftheonlywaystogetanywhereinanindustry.Withnetworkingyouareabletofosteryourcareer;mentoringisevenanoption,aslongasbothpartiesinthementorshipreceivesomesortofbenefit.ButhowdoesDanielleknowthisnetworkingstuffactuallyworks?WellDanielle’scurrentjob(PR&Communications ManageratChipotleMexicanGrill),isaresultofbothamentorshipandnetworking.DanielleusedhernetworkofprofessorsandLinkedIntomeetChrisArnold,hercurrentbossandmentor.ChrisArnoldwas/isamanageratChipotleandwaslookingtofillarole,heaskedDanielleifsheknewanyonethatwouldfittherole.Shereviewedtherole,andrealizedthatthistypeofrolewouldbeperfectforher!SohetoldChristhatshewasinterested inthepositionandafewyearslatersheisstillwithChipotle!OneofthereasonsthatshechooseChipotlewasbecauseofherloveforthevaluesofthecompany.Danielleis“married”toChipotle,meaningthatshebelievesinthebrandeverysingledaythatshegoesintowork.InhermarriagewithChipotle,Daniellegetstomakemeaningfuldecisions,anddecisionsthataretherightethicaldecisions.Daniellebelievesthatwhenchoosingwhichcompanyyouwanttoworkfor,youhavetoaskyourself,“Would Imarrythisbrand?”AnothertopicthatDanielletalkedaboutwasbreakingoutofyourcomfortzone.Formanyofthestudentsinthesession,itisscarytothingthinkofdoingsomethingthattakesusoutofourcomfortzone,whiletheother sideof thingsismakingmistakes.Daniellegavetwobitsofwisdomtotheroom:(1)mistakesareimportanttoyourcareerand(2)pointswhereyoufeelalittleuncomfortablearewhereyoulearnsomethingnew.Shealsobelievesthatitisimportanttosurround yourselfwithpeoplethatwillletyoufailonceortwice,butwillpickyouupandnotletyoucontinuallyfail.Does thepassionateDaniellemakemistakesandfacechallenges?Yes.Danielle’smostrecentchallengewaswiththee-coliscarethatoccurred nationwide.Thiswentonfor3-4monthsafterHalloween2015.OneofthebiggestchallengesshefacedwiththisincidentisfiguringouthowtobringpeoplebacktoChipotle!Luckily,theteamatChipotleisabletotackletheissue,alongwithsome ofthetopcrisiscommunicationmanagersinthecountry.SohowdoesDaniellegenerateallthepassionshehastowardsherwork?Wellaccordingtoher,shebelievesthatitcomesfromone“outofyourcomfortzone” thing,andthatistravel.ShereallylearnedtostepoutsideofBoulder,COandmeetpeoplewhoshenormallywouldnotmeet.Bydoingsoshewasabletobuildtheultimatesupportsystemfrompeoplethathavenothingbutherbestinterestinmind.Onebravestudentthenasked,”Howshould IgoaboutdiscoveringwhatIampassionateaboutorfindingajobthatdoesnotfeellikeajob?”AccordingtoDanielle,thismighttakeafewopportunities,youneedtoaskyourself,“WhatkindofimpactdoIwanttohave?WhatkindofmanagerdoIwanttohave/be?”Duringtheseopportunitiesyouneedtotrulytakethemaslearningexperiences,andbuildyourselfoff of them.Daniellemademewalkawaywonderingwhatmytruepassionsare,andhowcanIunleashmytruepotential.Thebiggesttakeawayformefromthissessionis,youshouldnotbeafraidtostepoutsideofyourcomfortzone.Bysteppingoutside,youmayfindwhatyouaretrulypassionateaboutandthenyoucanusethistounleashyourtruepotential.

BecomingaSuperheroBy:JacobArnoldBefore havingthehonorofmeetingthecompleteJediCouncil,IhadsometimetothinkaboutwhatIreallywantedtogetoutofthissession. Ihadcometotheconclusion thatIwantedtolearnmoreaboutmembersoftheJediCouncil.Iwasveryinterestedto hearhowprojectssimilartothe#Furious394project,helpedJedi’sintheirvariouscareers.Soforbeginners,whatprojectsdidmembers ofthecouncil workon?Welltonameafew,Piranha,Hoist,Proctor&Gamble,andNKUWellness.Theseprojectsweresoexperientialthattheylandedmostmembers of thecounciltheirfirstjob.Forexample,oneJedigothisfirstjobatORCbecausehewasfamiliarwiththemethodologies usedataresearchcompany.Somejedis saythattheemployerevenreviewedtheprojectonLinkedInandwasreadytodiscuss itattheinterview.Notonlydidsomemembersofthecouncilgetjobs,theyallhavebenefitedgreatlyintheircareerbecauseoftheclientproject(s)theyparticipatedin.Whetheritbegreatpresentationskills,Excelskills,PowerPointskills,timemanagementskills,andpracticalreal-worldexperience.Today,jedis seebenefitfromtheseprojectinacoupleof areas:timemanagement(deadline)skillsandrealworldgroupissues.Someoftheissuesthatareencounteredingroupworkinschool,actuallyfollowintotheworkplace withoffice politics.TheseprojectshavegreatlyallowedallmembersoftheJediCounciltogettowheretheyaretoday,becauseoftheskillsthattheyhavebeenabletodevelopwhiledoingclientbasedprojects.TheJediCouncilhasrecommendedusingourprojectson LinkedInasYodahassuggestedwedo.Asmentioned,mostemployerslookin-depthatLinkedInprofilesbeforeinterviews.Ifyouhaveyour clientbasedprojectonLinkedIn, theywillseeyourworkandthereal-worldexperiencethatyouhavebeenabletogain.Onceyouobtainyourfirstjob,allthankstoyourclientbasedproject,theJediCouncilrecommendsthatyoushouldfocusinontheskillsthatyouneedtodevelop,whetheritbeforyourcurrentjoborforyourdreamjob.Anotherthingthatyoushouldbegintodoisnetworking.Networkingisanimportantpartofpersonalcareergrowth,andaccordingtothecouncil,itisallaboutwhoyouknow.Lastly,oneofthemembersofthecouncil recommends thatyoulearntoadapttotheofficeculture.Itmaybedifficultatfirst,especiallyifyouhavenever workedinsuchanenvironmentbefore,butitisnecessary.Aftergettingyourfirstjobshouldyoucontinuetolookforotherjobs,evenifyou likeyourfirstone?Asonememberof thecouncilstated,youwillgothrougha“honeymoon”withinyourjob.Thefirstyearorsoisgoingto beawesome,butthenyouaregoingtorealizethatitmaynotbethejobforyou.Thishowevermaybenormalwithinthefirstfiveyearsofyourcareer.Youshouldtaketheseopportunitiesaslearningexperiencestofigureoutwhatyoudowanttodo,andwhatyoudon’twanttodo.Othermembersofthecouncil gavesomeadviceregardingthisquestionstatingthatisneveraharmtokeepyourresumecurrent,anditneveraharmtolookaround.TheJedicouncil’slastbitofwisdomforthepadawons wasregardingadviceforsomeonewhoistakingacoursewithanintegratedclient-basedprojectcurrently.Theadvicethattheygavetothepadawons wasveryvaluable,startingwithputtingmostofyourenergyintotheseprojectsastheywillmeanthemostinthelongrun,don’tjustsettleforthestandards,pushforsomething unique,makesureyourstoryistoldinthequickestmostefficientwaypossible,anddon’tusepre-formattedPowerPointtemplates.Thepadawons ofYoda’sclass canusethisadvicetoperfecttheirfinalworkforYodahimselftojudge.ThismeetingwiththeJediCouncilwasverybeneficialtome.IlovedhearinghowtheJedis usedtheirclientprojectstobetterthemselvesintheircareer,andhowitreallyhasimpactedthem.Themembersthemselvesweregreatspeakers,andIdefinetly appreciatethemtakingtheirtimetosharetheirwisdomwithusasIfeelitwillbeverybeneficialtoputtingtogetherthefinal#Furious394project.Thebiggesttakeawayfromthemeetingwiththecouncilwasdefinitelyalltheadvicethattheygavetous,regardingourcareers,andourremainingtimewithYoda.
