Please continue to be mispallel for Rav Gelley רב זכריה בן רבקה, for a רפואה שלמה.

YAHRZEIT OF RAV SAMSON RAPHAEL HIRSCH This coming Teves 27 will mark the 128th Yahrzeit of our Kehilla’s founder, Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch. As is well known, Rav Hirsch did more for the preservation and revival of Torah learning and Torah living in Germany than one could reasonably have expected of one man in one lifetime. The Frankfurt Kehilla which he established under the principles of Austritt and strict adherence to Halocho, became a model Kehilla. With the equally extraordinary efforts of his grandson, Rav Joseph Breuer, this Kehilla and Yeshiva were reestablished on these shores after the Nazi Churban. The great opus of Rav Hirsch’s writings continues to illuminate the Torah for us, for the children educated in our Mosdos, and for the wider Torah world. Today, our Kehilla and Yeshiva, proud bearers of Rav Hirsch’s name, continue to carry on Rav Hirsch’s sacred legacy of Torah Im Derech Eretz.

יהי זכרו ברוך CHANUKAH 5777 The night of 25 Kislev (Motzoei Shabbos Parashas Vayeishev, December 24th) saw the first candle of Chanukah 5777 lit in the large Menorah of our Beis Knesses by Chazon Ezra Lasdun. As usual, many members—and others—from near and not-so-near came to our Shul’s Hadlokas Neiros Chanukah over the various evenings, ensuring a full measure of Pirsumei Nisso. The choir, with its usual members over the weekend days of Chanukah, and with its more youthful ensemble on the weeknights, led the Kehilla in singing Mo’oz Tzur.

Shabbos was not the only time the melody of Shenei Zeisim was heard. (Shenei Zeisim, the Meora for Shabbos Chanukah, is the only Meora included in the Piyutim of Minhag Ashkenaz.) Each day of Chanukah, the tunes of Mo’oz Tzur and Shenei Zeisim could be heard in Adon Olam, parts of Hallel and in the Kaddish after Kerias HaTorah. The unique melody of V’Ollu Moshi’im was, likewise, rendered daily during Shacharis. In our Yeshiva, the students celebrated Chanukah with enthusiasm. Pictured next page, Rav Rubanowitz’s bochurim enjoy their Mesiba in the Beis Medrash and Moller Hall.

Rabbi Perlman’s fourth grade class, pictured below, had to travel to get to their very special Chanukah treat—they met with their rebbi’s Rav, Rav Elimelech Bluth, before enjoying some fun and a Chanukah Mesiba at Rabbi Perlman’s home.

The Elementary and Pre-School departments also enjoyed a variety of enjoyable crafts and activities, courtesy of their creative teachers.

67th ANNUAL DINNER By the time you read these lines there will less than six weeks until the Yeshiva/Kehilla’s Annual Dinner. The Dinner—the main fundraising event of our Yeshiva—is scheduled to take place on Sunday evening, February 19/ 24 Shevat, at the Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe. This is the time to solicit and place your ads in the journal, as well as to enter the Car Raffle. The KAJN is pleased to present brief profiles of this year’s honorees. Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein, this year’s Guest of Honor, and his wife, Mrs. Ruthie Katzenstein, need no introduction. It is hard to think of any facet of Kehilla and Yeshiva life in which the Katzensteins are not involved, giving of their time, resources, and their very selves. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Manfred and Esther Katzenstein z.l., founders and pillars of the Kehilla and Yeshiva, Rabbi Katzenstein has, for decades, exemplified the extreme devotion to Tzorchei Tzibur for which his parents were known. Rabbi and Mrs. Katzenstein, in turn, have raised a family of generations of Oskim BeTzorchei Tzibur in their own right.

Rabbi Katzenstein served as our Kehilla’s President some years ago, guiding the Kehilla through the challenges it faced. Rabbi Katzenstein is the head of the Yeshiva’s board, a grueling job requiring Mesirus Nefesh and devotion of an extraordinary caliber. Rabbi Katzenstein is also a member of the presidium of the Chevra Kadisha; his wife serves on the women’s Chevra. Mrs. Katzenstein has also been a main force in our Yeshiva’s Ladies’ Auxiliary. Rabbi Katzenstein was, for many years, the Chazon for Shacharis on Yom Kippur; he also davens the Selichos of Erev Rosh HaShana. Rabbi Katzenstein is one of the Mohalim of our Kehilla; though there is competition it is not fierce, since “No man is jealous of his son or his student,” and Messrs. Pinchas, Meir, Avrami and Yaakov Katzenstein are proud to be both grand/sons and students of Rabbi Katzenstein! We are delighted at this chance to publicly recognize the tremendous contributions of Rabbi Katzenstein. Rabbi Shraga Soloveitchik is this year’s Harbotzas HaTorah Awardee. Rabbi Soloveitchik has been both the devoted Menahel of our Mesivta and its beloved ninth-grade Rebbi for the last six years. He oversees all aspects of his Pre-Mesivta and Mesivta talmidim’s endeavors, in their growth in ruchniyus and learning, their academic successes, and overall emotional and social development and well-being. Rabbi Soloveitchik’s devotion and care is such that, on the very day of graduation this past June, he was to be found looking at post-high school Yeshiva options for one of his talmidim. Rabbi Soloveitchik, who hails from Monsey, is one of the grandsons of Rav Yosef Dov and the famed Rebbetzin Soloveitchik of Bais Yaakov of Monsey. He has been involved in Chinuch for many years, including his successful career in Yeshiva Degel HaTorah of Monsey, before bringing his talents and energy to our Yeshiva. It is the Yeshiva’s pleasure and pride to accord Rabbi Soloveitchik this honor, and we wish him Mazel Tov and much continued Hatzlocha in that which he does best, being Marbitz Torah to his fortunate Talmidim. Alumni Parents, Rabbi and Mrs. Mark and Esther Bauman: Alumni, parents, parents of alumni…each alone would have more than qualified Rabbi Mark and Mrs. Esther Bauman for well-deserved recognition by the Kehilla and Yeshiva. As Alumni Parents, the accolades just keep coming. Both Rabbi and Mrs. Bauman come from the Heights, as children of staunch Kehilla families who were Oskim Betzorchei Tzibur. Though the Baumans make their home in Teaneck, they have not lost one iota of their deep connection to the Kehilla and Yeshiva, and Rabbi Bauman served some years ago as the dedicated General Studies principal of our Mesivta. Having attended YRSRH themselves, the Baumans have sent all their children to our Yeshiva, culminating with the current triple-play of Avigayil, Nechama and Yocheved in the eighth grade of our Bais Yaakov Middle School. The sterling Midos and outstanding academics of the Bauman students, both past and present, have often been noted. We wish the Baumans continued Nachas from their children and their families, and a heartiest Mazel Tov on this honor. This year’s Chinuch HaBonim Awardee, Rabbi Yehudah Perlman, is our Yeshiva’s dedicated and well-liked fourth-grade rebbi. In his eighth year at this post, Rabbi Perlman brings his well-known warmth, care and enthusiasm to all he teaches. Additionally, far beyond the Chumash, Mishnayos and other Limudim he teaches the boys, he serves as a wonderful Torah role-model for his Talmidim. It is no wonder he is beloved by both the boys he teaches and their families. A native and current resident of Brooklyn, Rabbi Perlman learned in Yeshivas Tiferes Elimelech, the Mir Yeshiva and in the Yeshiva of Rav Dovid Soloveitchik in Eretz Yisroel. He was a member of the Yam

HaTalmud Kollel of Yeshivas Torah Temima for over thirteen years before beginning his career in Chinuch. We wish Rabbi Perlman a sincere Mazel Tov on this well-deserved recognition, and much ongoing Nachas from both his own children, and the children he so faithfully guides and teaches in our Yeshiva. Mrs. Lenore Richter, recipient of the Continuation of Jewish Education Award, was born in New York City and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Richter, along with her husband, Glenn, has lived a life of extraordinary Hisaskus beTzorchei Tzibur. Her grandfather, Rav Avraham Eliezer Wolfson zt”l, made Aliya in the early 1920’s, from Lithuania to Eretz Yisroel, then under the British Mandate. Upon his subsequent move to the United States, he served as a traveling Rabbi for the scattered Jewish communities across North Dakota, at a time when America was the proverbial Midbar in terms of Torah and Yahadus. Mrs. Richter fondly recalls walking to Shul on Shabbos with Rav Wolfson after he moved his family to Omaha. In her college years, Mrs. Richter became extremely involved in the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry movement, marrying its co-leader, Glenn. Mr. and Mrs. Richter have made the Upper West Side their home for several decades, but their passionate dedication for Jewish education spans much more than their local community. Mrs. Richter stresses that a Yeshiva education is all but a sine qua non for a child’s future commitment to a Torah-true life. The Richters are as generous as they are dedicated, and have been mainstays of not only their local Yeshiva, Yeshiva Ketana (formerly Chofetz Chaim) but of numerous Manhattan Yeshivos, including our own. Mrs. Richter stresses that by supporting Yeshivos, the entire Manhattan Yishuv is strengthened. The Richters exemplify the concept of Areivus, co-responsibility for Klal Yisroel as one entity, and we are delighted to recognize her at this year’s Dinner. This year’s Dinner Chairman, Mr. Ori Alpert, is a proud member of the YRSRH graduating class of 1990, a talmid of our Yeshiva from first through twelfth grade. Mr. Alpert grew up in Englewood, NJ; he currently resides in Kew Gardens, Queens, with his wife and children. He works in the real-estate sector. As a son of the late Mr. Joseph Alpert and TBLCT Mrs. Gila Alpert, Ori’s connections to the Kehilla and Yeshiva extend far past the classroom. His father was a good friend of Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein (this year’s Guest of Honor), and had a close relationship with Rav Perlow Shlit”a, attending the Thursday night Chumash shiurim both when they were given weekly by Rav Perlow, and later, by the various Magidei shiur. Ori cherishes his family’s connections to the Kehilla, as well as his memories from his student days at Breuers. Ori hopes, as dinner chairman, to help ensure an equally positive future for our Yeshiva. As the Yovel Class Ambassador, Rabbi Yossi Krieger is the representative of the class of 1967. Rabbi Krieger is known as someone who participates in Tzorchei Tzibur and who helps others and gets things done without fanfare. We are pleased to be “megaleh amukim” and acknowledge Rabbi Krieger’s contributions.

Dr. Mark Eisen, Campaign Chairman, is no stranger to our Yeshiva nor the Dinner, as Dr. Eisen and his wife, Mrs. Hennie Eisen, have been delighted YRSRH parents for more than a decade, and were honored as Parents of the Year two years ago. Both native New Yorkers, Mark originally hails from Queens, while Hennie is a former Brooklynite. The Eisens currently make their home in Teaneck, with Dr. Eisen practicing chiropractics in Riverdale. The Eisens’ oldest child, Tzvi, graduated from our Pre- Mesivta this past June; Danielle is a seventh grader in the Bais Yaakov Middle School; Ari and Naomi are in the third and first grades.

Dr. and Mrs. Eisen have been at the forefront in spearheading some of our Yeshiva’s recent initiatives, including the improvements to the schoolyard/play space, renovations of the laboratory room, and the nascent Beis HaMedrash room in the boys’ elementary building (beneath the Shul).

We wish Dr. and Mrs. Eisen much strength and hatzlocha, and Nachas from their beautiful family, as they continue their dedicated and enthusiastic efforts on behalf of our Yeshiva.

TWO SPECIAL SHIURIM Continuing the success of the past few years, the Kehilla offered the last two of the three legal-Holiday shiurim this season on the mornings of Monday December 26th and Monday January 2nd. The shiurim were given by Rav Rubanowitz (directly below) and Rabbi Yosef Jacobovits (far below), and were well attended. Light refreshments were served.

Girls’ Melave Malka The Girls’ Elementary department recently enjoyed their annual Melave Malka, which included Divrei Torah, games, and dancing, as well as delicious food. It was emceed by Mrs. Faigy Szanzer. Moros and staff, mothers and daughters (including those below school-age!) enjoyed the camaraderie and school spirit.

A FEAST… FOR THE SOUL, EYES AND PALATE By Mrs. Molly Resnick

A room bedecked with decorous centerpieces, dreidel-laden props, and electric lights sitting atop blue and white gems; an evening highlighted by Agudath Israel’s Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, emceed by Mr. Craig Cohen, with musical entertainment by Cantor Eric S. Freeman; a luscious hot buffet, wine, sushi, soup, a salad bar, delectable cakes, scrumptious ice cream, catered by Lechayim; and attended by our beloved Rebbetzin Gelley - what more could one ask for?

The Senior Social Clubs of KAJ invited the entire Kehilla to a gala Melave Malka, on Motzoei Shabbos, Parashas Toledos, December 3, 2016, following its very successful inaugural affair last year. Food and good cheer pervaded the evening as members and friends of the Kehilla enjoyed the camaraderie, ambiance and Divrei Torah offered.

Rabbi Zwiebel, Executive Vice President of Agudath Israel was introduced by Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein, who has worked together with Rabbi Zwiebel on many Agudah and community activities. Rabbi Zwiebel told the crowd that we, as Jewish people, must meet HaShem’s exacting standards. It is not enough, he said, to be better than the secular world, which is becoming more immoral with each passing year. Rather, we need to live up to our divine mission of being a “kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”

Our values, he said, come from HaShem. Without an absolute divine measure, marriage can mean one thing today and another tomorrow. The laws against murder may include ill people today but may not tomorrow. (Several states already, he said, permit assisted suicide.) That is why, he said – citing a comment by Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch – the Luchos contain seemingly “obvious” laws like killing and stealing. The general prohibition might be obvious, but all the myriad details certainly are not.

The enchanted evening lasted approximately two and a half hours and was enjoyed by all. Inspiring words, sumptuous food, a feast for the eyes – the Senior Social Clubs prides itself on doing this just right.

NEWS FROM MORIAH SENIOR CENTER Moriah seniors celebrated Chanukah in festive style. A 5-foot balloon menora was on display and the room was decked out in glitz and panache. Dreidels and gelt were strewn on the tables and a sumptuous lunch of minute steak and latkes was rounded out with traditional custard doughnuts. Cantor Eric S. Freeman, along with banjo/mandolin player, Josh (“Mr. Shabbos”) Alpert, wowed the crowd with an energetic display of musical talent and witty banter unlike any previous performance. Every client went home with a gift and a smile on their face. Don’t miss Moriah’s upcoming concert on Monday, January 16th – “Songs from Broadway Shows that Became Hits”. If you are 60+, working or retired, this might be the time to come in and register. See what Moriah can offer you. To Fall or not to Fall

The following was composed during Chanukah and can be sung to the tune of Moaus Zur.

The Chuppa ended in the wedding hall, 'Twas then I slipped and began to fall.

With pain severe, in leg of mine, Hatzoloh came, and arrived in time.

Two bone-cracks x-rays revealed,

A five week stay in rehab was sealed, It helped, I walk, I'm almost fine again.

Forever grateful to Hashem.

End of song

And now a most hearty thank you to all who called, sent cards, visited, brought cookies, donuts, and orchids for Shabbos. But most of all I thank my devoted wife and wonderful children for their constant support and encouragement, during my five week rehab stay. My children provided homemade food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 95% of the time. Without their constant support it would have been a much more difficult period. I must mention my granddaughter, Adina, who did so much to make my recovery period a more tolerable experience. Thank you all again. Gunther Weiskopf

SHAATNEZ Shaatnez (wool and linen) is often found in garments bought even from a reliable Jewish clothing store. Therefore, it is forbidden to wear any man’s, woman’s or child’s garment that contains wool or linen until it has been determined not to contain shaatnez. To determine whether your garment is shaatnez-free, garments may be dropped off at the Kehilla office, 714 W. 186th Street at the following times:

Weekdays 9:30 – 4:30 Fridays 9:30 – 12:00

If you are not available at these times, please make an appointment by emailing [email protected]. If you do not have email, call 917-359-2873 and leave a message.

Rabbi Kalman Strauss will test the garments on our premises.

Please note that it is important to leave on tags with information where garment is manufactured and list of materials contained in it.
