    What do fruit, games and creative

    problem solving have to do with the studyof science? In Mrs. Mehtas 7th grade

    Earth Science class, it means the hands-onculmination of a unit in which studentslearn about maps and globes.

    Drop Everything and Plant (DEAP)Celebrating and caring for the TASOK botanical garden

    Every year Middle School studentsplant hard wood trees, commercial

    trees or fruit trees in the botanicalgarden.

    This year they have opted to plantflower beds around the Middle andElementary Schools.

    An Interdisciplinary Unit: Science andVisual Art

    This was a grade 7 unit ofstudy called eco-etho

    jewelry. Students studied theproperties of metals and thenmade jewelry from recycledmetal. Some earrings werebought by proud parents foras much as $20 a pair. The

    proceeds went towardsbuying stationary for HIV/AIDS orphans.

    Earth Day 2009

    I introduced the celebration

    of Earth Day to ISU. One ofthe many recycling projectsthat MYP year 3 studentstried to make, was a mineralwater bottle greenhousesimilar to this one.

    Shaggy DogShow

    For 6 years I was involved inorganizing and running thechildrens tent at the Shaggy

    Dog Show in Kampala. Someof the activities included:origami, face painting,painting clay pots etc.

    My family loves pets and

    my husband and I were longstanding members ofUganda Society for theProtection and Care ofAnimals (USPCA).

    One of my Hobbies:Making Bead Jewelry

    The bead shop here is at theKazuri Beads Factory inNairobi, Kenya. It is a wellknown project famouslyadvertised in magazines likeHarpers Bazaar.

    I have also run an after

    school activity called MakingBead Jewelry in some of theschools I taught at.
