l. The Soap FacTory’S haunTed BaSemenT

Every year, the Soap Factory hosts the scariest haunted house in the Midwest. Noah Bremer, a local theater doctor, is putting together this year’s haunted basement. The actors’ scary appearances have been developed by a renowned make up artist, and smell engineers have been hired to create the creepiest experience possible. They even make you sign a waiver before entering and give you a safe word just in case it becomes too overwhelming. As an avid scary movie enthusiast, I am excited to check this spooky experience out.

2. Solera’S rooFTop movie nighT

Every Sunday and Tuesday night starting at dusk, Solera hosts movie night on their downtown rooftop. You can enjoy Spanish tapas and beverages while watching your favorite movies. The view of downtown Minneapolis is a plus too. The movie nights go through the rest of September, so make sure to check it out before it’s too late!

3. apple orchardS

Apple orchards will always remind me of my childhood.

There is something about hay bail rides and pumpkin patches that make me feel nostalgic. This year I would like to go back. I can even pick up a couple pumpkins to carve for Halloween.

4. raking For The elderly

Many elderly and disabled people are not able to do outside yard work during the fall. CEAP’s Senior Chore Program coordinates raking events every fall and spring. It is a great way to give back to the community. Bring along a couple of friends to pitch in and help out. You can jump into big leaf piles while accumulating philanthropy hours. You might even get a few homemade cookies out of it!

5. pumpkin Spice laTTeS aT STarBuckS

Fall is the time of year where restaurants start rolling out with pumping flavored treats. My favorite is Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte. It warms you up on those cool fall days and tastes like thanksgiving.

6. ZomBie puB crawl

The Zombie Pub Crawl is happening again on Westbank

this year. On October 13th, you will see hundreds of zombies roaming the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The best part about the zombies are the themes. You will see anything from girl scout zombies to football player zombies to zombie brides. The creators of the Zombie Pub Crawl are adding an additional feature this year: Zombie Island. Shuttles will be available that will transport you in between Westbank and Zombie Island. Tickets are already available, so make sure to purchase yours soon!

name: Harrison Hammondyear: SophomoreFraTerniTy: Sigma Phi EpsilonhiS moTTo: “Remember men, it’s just like Call of Duty... except you can die.” – Drill Sergeant Cunningham

hiS STory:Being the driven and scholarly fraternity gentleman that he is, Harrison Hammond decided to join forces with the University of Minnesota ROTC during the spring semester of 2012. I asked Hammond to describe his experience going through basic training this past summer.

“I spent the majority of this past summer in U.S. Army boot camp at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Overall, it was a very unique and rewarding experience with countless physical and mental challenges that I had to face. Waking up each day at 4:30 a.m. to the sound of a blow-horn, practicing with an M16 rifle, wearing a gas mask in a gas chamber and breathing in CS gas, crawling on my stomach in darkness under a stream of live M240 bullets, fighting with other members using Combatives, and constantly being yelled at by drill sergeants

are just a few of the daily tests I had to overcome. That last psychological challenge, being yelled at by drill sergeants, was often the most difficult to take but also the most critical. A drill sergeant’s job is to train soldiers to survive in combat. If they fail to do their job, the consequences for the soldier could be fatal.

It occurred to me while spending four days in a foxhole with a buddy from my squad, that the bond you share with your fellow soldiers in the military is very similar to what you share with your brothers in a fraternity. You become the best of friends in the good times and the best of friends especially in the bad times, and it’s a bond that becomes unbreakable and truly lasts a lifetime. Many of us in the fraternity share rooms, do charity events, study for exams together, celebrate together, and share everyday experiences and trials with each other. Throughout college you spend the majority of your time with your brothers and sisters who are likely to share interests and goals similar to yours. It’s the same

in the military. After 10 weeks in boot camp, I know with an absolute certainty that I would do anything for any of my fellow brothers in arms and in fraternity brothers, even if that meant risking my own life in the process.

Through my experiences at boot camp, I gained an even deeper appreciation for what it means to be an American and to live in, without a doubt, the greatest country in the world. I look forward to graduating from college and serving my country wherever I am most needed. Boot camp also made me understand that I am not cut out for a civilian 9-to-5 desk job. When I have completed ROTC training at the University of Minnesota, I hope and have plans to attend the Airborne and Ranger School and to use what I have learned in ROTC training and college to become a leader.”

Welcome to Greek Life Fall 2012 pledge classes! We are so excited to have you as members of our community. Here are some tips to help your introduction to the Greek community go smoothly.

Find a Buddy - The first piece of advice would be to find a mentor. It’s great to have the name and phone number of someone who has more experience in the chapter. If your chapter does not assign a mentor of some kind reach out to a woman you met and connected with during recruitment or a new member educator. Use these women as a resource to get any questions that you may have answered. Having someone to check in with about anything from what to wear to chapter meeting to what time lunch is served can be a lifesaver.

geT To know your pledge claSS - Along with getting the con-tact information of an older member be sure to stay in touch with women in your pledge class. They may have the same questions as you and possibly have already gotten answers. Other new members may also live by you, so texting them before you walk over to the house so that you can walk together is a great way to get to know someone better.

Be Bold - Invite members to do things with you and know

you are always free to invite yourself. Don’t be afraid to tag along with members on a Target run or trip to Chilly Billy’s. If you would like to go along don’t wait for an invite, instead mention that you’d like to join. And don’t forget to return the favor! Upperclassmen might love a guess pass to weekend brunch or access to a residence hall laundry room in the future so always leave that option open.

Become a regular - After you’ve gotten to know a few people become a familiar face. Make it a goal to visit your chapter at least once a week outside of Monday night dinner and meet-ing. Find some free time in between classes to study there or visit on a night where everyone is watching a particular television show. The more people see you around the more they will engage you in conversation.

you geT whaT you give - You get out of Greek Life what you put into Greek Life. Be sure to be friendly and kind to all women in your chapter and you can expect the same in return. If you want to be involved ask an older member what you can do. Homecoming is a great opportunity to get involved as there are a lot of informal events. Be sure to sup-port your chapter at all of the competitions or go beyond sup-porting and participate. Be sure to bring other new members with you!

uSe your reSourceS - If at any point you feel overwhelmed by the obligations of Greek Life let someone know. Being a first year student and balancing your new collegiate academics with chapter commitments can be tough. If you are joining after your first year you may have made other commitments that are being neglected. Your new member educators are a great resource. They will let you know what events are es-sential you attend and help you balance your time.

repreSenT - Finally, remember to stay true to yourself. You are now a member of a values based organization. Your chapter recruited you because they can tell you possess their values and will live them out daily. Represent your chapter with pride and enjoy all that Greek Life here at the University of Minnesota has to offer!

Remember when you were going off to your first day of Kindergarten and your mom or dad was walking you to the bus stop? You were so excited and felt like such a big kid for going to school on your own. When do we as students lose that feeling? Never. Back to school has its pros and cons, but the pros always seem to prevail. Whether its back to school shopping for clothes and school supplies or organizing all your items in your backpack so it’s just right, getting ready for back to school at every age means something different.

When I was younger, I was always sad when summer was ending because it meant back to sitting in a classroom all day. While that is still true, at college back to school generally brings a more cheery and excited feeling to most because it means you are going back to seeing friends from out of state, back to seeing your Greek brothers and sisters, and of course back to the reason we are all here in the first place: classes. It’s strange because we are here for the academics, but gain so much more than that by coming back to college. College is different from all the other previous grades because you are forced to try something new almost on a daily basis, from taking a new street on your walk to class to sitting next to someone different in your 200-person lecture three days a week, change is always happening at college.

Fall 2012 is upon us here at the U of M, and I could not be more excited. Fall is my favorite season because it means cooler weather (for all my other sorority sisters out there, your house won’t be 10,000 degrees anymore), football season, and leaves changing colors and falling in the mall area. Back to school to me is good and bad because I get in such a routine at home of working and seeing friends, that the idea of going to class and having a schedule every day is tough to wrap my head around. What motivates me, and I’m sure the rest of you as well, is being back on campus. I helped move in freshmen this year, and being a sophomore it brought back all these memories of the dorms and everything fun and stressful freshman year entails. Transitions for freshmen (and even upperclassmen) are tough, but everyone does it and gets through it. No matter

what year you are, coming back to campus means a new year, a new set of classes, more people to meet and more places to explore on campus.

I’m attempting to make a list of things I want to do, learn, experience and see this year at school and I figured I’d share it with you as well. One thing I really want to do is explore more on the St. Paul campus. Most of my classes were on east bank this year, and I really want to go see what else our school has to offer there (besides the rumored cows and agriculture stuff). However, in order to get there, you have to know how to take the campus connecter, and sadly I have yet to master the bus systems. Public transportation is a great thing, and everyone should utilize it, so that’s one of my goals this year, and I highly recommend you all try it too if you haven’t. One of the other things I want to do is check out the Weisman Art Museum. After walking past it almost daily spring semester, I have never walked into it. With such a great resource and fun place to go on our own campus, why not check it out?

There are plenty of other things I want to accomplish this year, but we’ll save that for another time. My overall message to you all is to wish you a happy fall, and a welcome back to campus!

TAILGATING

No matter how well MarQueis Gray and the Gophs do this year, being at a Big Ten University gives everyone a great reason to tailgate. Waking up at 7 a.m. with kegs and eggs is something you probably won’t do after your time in college, so set you alarm and break out the red solo cups bright and early. It’s a classic college tradition that everyone is envious of, so you better enjoy it now. And Greeks know how to tailgate better than anyone else. So make sure to be ready this year. But as much fun as the tailgate is going to be, make sure to make your presence known at the game itself. After all, there would be tailgate if there were no game, right?

GO DOWN FRATERNITY ROW

Whether you live on row or not it’s always fun to travel down University and stop by to pregame with friends in other houses. It’s college gameday so take advantage and join in on the lively atmosphere we have here at the U. If there’s one thing that can bring a Greek community together, it’s football season. There’s no better sight to see than a whole street of Greeks stretching their presence all the way over to tailgate. It’s a beautiful thing.

TAkE A bREAk FROM CLAssEs

It’s that time of year where classes have only just begun, and already we feel like we need a break. Work hard, play hard should become your new motto. Take it upon yourself to enjoy your Saturdays like a mini vacation. After a long, grueling week of classes, take a well-deserved break from your Bio lab and get some color out in the sun, right Andrew Felton? Push your books to the side for a couple hours and enjoy beautiful TCF Bank Stadium with your friends. Might as well check out which houses scored with the best new crop of pledges and babies while you’re there.

ThE ChEERLEADERs

Although Chris Love and Brandon Coefield won’t be on the field throwing girls 30 feet in the air this season, both Minnesota’s cheer and dance teams are some of the best in the nation. They are put on that field for a purpose, that being to make the stadium really pop. They practice all season to maintain that school spirit that we can only dream of holding for an entire game day. While we’re all out there enjoying ourselves at tailgate, they’re up at the crack of dawn getting ready to perform in front of a bunch of rowdy fans. You have to appreciate

that, right? Rumor has it they’re not bad to look at either…

shOW YOUR GOPhER PRIDE

The past few years there hasn’t been much to cheer about for Gopher’s football, but it’s a new season with hopes of a bowl game. Think about this, you don’t want to be that guy that missed the most important game of the season because it just didn’t seem feasible. Any game could be exciting, given the right attitude. Throw on your maroon and gold overalls, or jorts as I will be seen in each Saturday, and cheer on our Golden Gophers. Ski-U-Mah! Hey, it could be worse, at least we’re not Buckeyes or Nittany Lions, right?

eXperimenT wiTh Fall FaShionIt’s September, and that means a clean slate for the new

fashion year and September issues of magazines so thick they could last for months, and in my case, they usually do.

Right now, the fashion world is experiencing a new wave of acceptance of personal style. Look at some of today’s pop icons: Nicki Minaj, Alexa Chung, Katy Perry and Florence Welch. Whether or not you appreciate their eccentric style, these daring celebrities are giving us commoners more leeway for fashion experimentation. Neon spandex and a blown up booty might be taking it a little too far for campus, but know that although testing out a unique style may take some courage, other fashion friendly folk will applaud your bravery.

If you’re nervous, start small with accessories. Although watches have a universal and practical appeal, you can still show your personal style by flaunting time pieces in different colors, sizes and shapes.

The wrist isn’t the only body part to stand out this fall. Highlighting the neck and collarbone with chunky necklaces can help you sparkle among the fading leaves. Feeling a bit more adventurous? Take this look one step further and try an embellished fashion collar add-on over a crew neck shirt or light weight sweater. Girly tomboy; oxymoron or fabulously androgynous?

I recently took another small leap of faith and bought my first tube of lipstick. I have always admired women who could pull off a bright lip confidently, not to mention without smudging it on their face and teeth. I usually just stick to chapstick. But I felt it was time to mature my makeup palette, so I walked into Sephora and surrendered myself to their expertise. And I realized that anyone can pull off lip color, as long as the rest of the face is kept simple and neutral. Lipstick is a great way to stand out and instantly increases confidence levels.

A pretty, polished lip also contrasts nicely with no-fuss hair and chunky sweaters. Top buns are a simple staple and super stylish. I have also just discovered sea salt spray, the perfect weapon to tame the frizz of my naturally wavy hair. And anything looks cozy when paired with a thick cable knit sweater. Cardigans and thin knits are classics, but if you want to expand your sweater horizon, you can’t go wrong with a thicker knit, and you are sure to stay warm. Lucky for us in Minnesota, there is no such thing as too chunky.

Denim will always be a staple, and nothing looks more clean than a dark wash jean with a great fit. Throw on a slouchy T-shirt and a leather motorcycle jacket and you will have perfected the supermodel-off-duty uniform. But this fall, try experimenting with jeans that comprise of deep jewel tones or large muted patterns. Pastels worked well for spring, but as the weather cools, darker hues bring a warmth to any wardrobe. To pull off patterned pants in a sophisticated manner, make sure the pattern is a medium size with similar colors.

These tips are definitely not rules, and they aren’t even so much as guidelines. Take advantage of this age of fashion exploration. Put your personality into the clothes you wear and you are sure to turn a few heads and gain some admirers.

It’s that time of year again, boys and girls. Tailgate season is here. The Gopher football season has officially started, and it’s time to dig out those striped overalls and pump the jams on your fratio. We may not have the best team in the Big 10, but that doesn’t mean we don’t know how to tailgate. Just in case you need some tips, here is your guide on How To: Tailgate like a Champ.

1. Attire

Maroon and gold. Head to toe. No exceptions. Normally you would look ridiculous, but during the tailgate festivities, anything goes. Where else can you pull off maroon and gold striped overalls? That’s right; no where. So go ahead, paint that beer belly maroon and gold. You’ll look fabulous. And don’t forget to wear your frat pack. It’s both convenient and fashionable.

2. When to Start

Here at the U of M, we take our tailgates seriously. That means any decent tailgate will always start before 8 AM, rain or shine. Being tired is not an excuse. Make sure to set at least three alarms in order to wake up in time. Still tired? Chug a can of Red Bull,

and you are good to go.

3. Food and Beverages

Grilling out is an essential part of any tailgate. Burgers, brats, and hot dogs are staple food items that should be in everyone’s diet on game day. You can even get a little fancy and through some chips and dip into the mix. As for beverages, drink anything you want. Just make sure to stay hydrated, so you can make the most of the day’s festivities. Do you have a hard time remembering to hydrate yourself? Make a game out it! Every time someone chants “Who hates Iowa?!”, take a drink.

4. Activities

First of all, all game day festivities must be accompanied by great music. Make sure to prepare a fratastic playlist the day before. Anything from “Levels” to “Wagon Wheel” should work just fine. (Warning: Spontaneous dance parties may occur) Next, decide which activities you want to have. The bag toss has always been a crowd pleaser. Bocce ball and the ladder toss are great, and if your ID says 21 plus, beer pong

and flip cup are fun options as well.

5. School Spirit

Last but not least, school spirit is a must at any tailgate. Even though your tailgate is über fun, make sure you leave in time so you can get to the game before kick-off. Walking into TCF is half the fun. It’s that time of the day where everyone can scream about how much they hate Iowa and prove that they know how to spell M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A.

Well, there you have it, Gophers. Follow these tips and you are guaranteed to have a successful tailgate. Happy Football Season!
